Asmā al-Ḥusná — most beautiful names (of Allāh)

The Asmā al-Ḥusná are the most

  • ism = name + attribute
  • attribute = attribute, e.g. anger from al-fatihah, but does not give name

Don't be like those who forgot Allah, so Allah made them forget themselves. Those are the stubbornly sinful. (59:19)

all names are ultimate perfection and beauty.

Who is Allāh?

The closest we can get to describing Allāh is through the qualities of Allāh:

  • ‘To Allāh belong the names most beautiful and perfect.’ (Qurʾān 59:24)
  • The prophet Muḥammad ﷺ said ‘Allāh has ninety-nine names: 100 minus one. Whoever memorizes them will enter Paradise.‘ (reported by Abū Hurayrah)

Allah has an infinite number of names. There are 99, such that if you memorize them.

Abū Hurayra (may Allāh be pleased with him) listed the following 99 qualities of Allāh. Allāh is all that, and more.

Don't get hung up on the word Allāh. It's just a word. There is no god but the one real God, who is by definition beyond all comparison.

Allāh has certain attributes, like anger, that don’t become a name. Each name represents an attribute, though.

Allāh has an infinite number of names. There are 99 of them we can memorize to enter Jannah.

The Qurʾān contains more than 99 names.
