Sajdat al-Taʿẓīm سجدة التعظيم — prostration of respect, prostration of honour

سجدة التعظيم
noun phrase
ALA-LC sajdat al-taʿẓīm

In ancient times, bowing down to the ground (Sajdah) was done to honour and pay respect to a magnificent person, such as a great leader.

Two examples are found in the Qurʾān:

  • parents and brothers to the prophet Yusuf
  • angels to prophet Adam

In the religious code revealed to the prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, this type of Sajdah was made forbidden for our current community. Prostration became reserved for Allāh only.
