al-Salafīyah is an Islamic reform movement founded by Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb in the 18th century CE. As a reaction to Western modernism and colonialism, it aims to return to the practices of the earliest Muslims, the pious predecessors.
The somewhat controversial term Wahhābī is sometimes used by non-Salafī people to describe an ultra-conservative orientation within Salafism.
