Ṣawm صوم — fasting; self-control over physical urges

Every day during the month of Ramaḍān, from the fajr adhān to sunset, Muslims strengthen their willpower by abstaining from physical urges:

  • no food
  • no drink
  • no sexual activity

Maintaining Ṣawm during Ramaḍān is the fourth Pillar of Islam.
