ʿUlūm al-Dunyawīyah العلوم الدنيوية — worldly sciences

al-ʿUlūm al-Dunyawīyah are the natural sciences of this world, for example:

secular sciences,

Indeed, your Lord is Allah , who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds. (7:54)

  • ʿilm al-ṣarf = morphology
  • ʿilm al-maʿnā = semantics, the study of meaning
  • ʿilm al-ṣawtīyat = phonetics, phonology
  • ʿilm al-nafs = psychology, the study of the psyche
  • ʿilm al-falak = astronomy, the study of celestial bodies
  • ʿilm al-lughah (al-ʿāmm) = lexicography, linguistics
