The Qurʾān

Chapter 10

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Alif Lam Ra These are the verses of the wise Book.
Yusuf Ali A.L.R. These are the ayats of the Book of Wisdom.
W. Khan Alif Lam Ra These are the verses of the Book of Wisdom.
M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the verses of the Book of wisdom.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem Is it so surprising to people that We have revealed to a man from among them that he should warn people, and give glad news to those who believe, that they are on a sure footing with their Lord? [Yet] those who disbelieve say, ‘This man is clearly a sorcerer.’
Yusuf Ali Is it a matter of wonderment to men that We have sent Our inspiration to a man from among themselves?- that he should warn mankind (of their danger), and give the good news to the Believers that they have before their Lord the lofty rank of truth. (But) say the Unbelievers: "This is indeed an evident sorcerer!"
W. Khan Does it seem strange to people that We have sent revelation to a man from among themselves, saying, ‘Warn mankind and give glad tidings to the believers that they have a true rank [of honour] with their Lord?’Those who deny the truth say, ‘This man is clearly a sorcerer.’
M. Sarwar Why should it seem strange to mankind that We sent revelations to a mortal among them, who would warn others and give to the believers the glad news of their high rank in the sight of God. The unbelievers have said, "He (Muhammad) is certainly a magician."

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem Your Lord is God who created the heavens and earth in six Days, then established Himself on the Throne, governing everything; there is no one that can intercede with Him, unless He has first given permission: this is God your Lord so worship Him. How can you not take heed?
Yusuf Ali Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority), regulating and governing all things. No intercessor (can plead with Him) except after His leave (hath been obtained). This is Allah your Lord; Him therefore serve ye: will ye not receive admonition?
W. Khan Truly, your Lord is God who created the heavens and the earth in six days [periods], then He ascended the Throne, disposing the whole affair. No one may intercede with Him save with His permission. Such is God, your Lord, so worship Him alone. Will you not take heed?
M. Sarwar God is your Lord who has created the heavens and the earth in six days and established His Dominion over the Throne. He maintains order over the creation. No one can intercede for others without His permission. It is God who is your only Lord. Worship only Him. Will you then not think?

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem It is to Him you shall all return––that is a true promise from God. It was He who created [you] in the first place, and He will do so again, so that He may justly reward those who believe and do good deeds. But the disbelievers will have a drink of scalding water, and agonizing torment, because they persistently disbelieved.
Yusuf Ali To Him will be your return- of all of you. The promise of Allah is true and sure. It is He Who beginneth the process of creation, and repeateth it, that He may reward with justice those who believe and work righteousness; but those who reject Him will have draughts of boiling fluids, and a penalty grievous, because they did reject Him.
W. Khan To Him you shall all return. God’s promise is true; He originates Creation, then He restores it, so that He may reward with justice those who believe and do good works. Those who have denied the truth shall have boiling water to drink, and a painful punishment, because of their denial.
M. Sarwar People, you will all return to God. The promise of God is true; He creates all things and (after their death) brings them to life again so that He may justly reward the righteously striving believers. The disbelievers will drink boiling filthy water and suffer painful torment as a recompense for their disbelief.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem It is He who made the sun a shining radiance and the moon a light, determining phases for it so that you might know the number of years and how to calculate time. God did not create all these without a true purpose; He explains His signs to those who understand.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand.
W. Khan It is He who made the sun radiate a brilliant light and the moon shed its lustre, and ordained for it stages so that you may learn to count out the years and [to make other such] reckoning of time. God has not created all these without a purpose. He makes plain His revelations to men of understanding.
M. Sarwar It is God who has made the sun radiant and the moon luminous and has appointed for the moon certain phases so that you may compute the number of years and other reckonings. God has created them for a genuine purpose. He explains the evidence (of His existence) to the people of knowledge.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem In the succession of night and day, and in what God created in the heavens and earth, there truly are signs for those who are aware of Him.
Yusuf Ali Verily, in the alternation of the night and the day, and in all that Allah hath created, in the heavens and the earth, are signs for those who fear Him.
W. Khan In the alternation of night and day, and in all that God has created in the heavens and the earth, there are signs for a God-fearing people.[20]
M. Sarwar The alternation of the day and night and all that God has created in the heavens and earth are evidence (of the existence of God) for the pious people.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Those who do not expect to meet Us and are pleased with the life of this world, contenting themselves with it and paying no heed to Our signs,
Yusuf Ali Those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present, and those who heed not Our Signs,-
W. Khan Those who entertain no hope of meeting Us, being pleased and contented with the life of this world, and those who give no heed to Our signs,
M. Sarwar Those who do not have hope of receiving Our mercy in the life hereafter who are pleased and satisfied with the worldly life and who pay no attention to Our revelations

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem shall have the Fire for their home because of what they used to do.
Yusuf Ali Their abode is the Fire, because of the (evil) they earned.
W. Khan shall have their abode in the Fire in requital for their deeds.
M. Sarwar will all have the Fire as their dwelling for that which they had done.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem But as for those who believe and do good deeds, their Lord will guide them because of their faith. Streams will flow at their feet in the Gardens of Bliss.
Yusuf Ali Those who believe, and work righteousness,- their Lord will guide them because of their faith: beneath them will flow rivers in gardens of bliss.
W. Khan Those who believe and do good deeds will be guided by their Lord because of their faith. Rivers shall flow at their feet in the Gardens of Bliss.
M. Sarwar The righteously striving believers receive, through their faith, guidance from their Lord to the bountiful gardens wherein streams flow.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Their prayer in them will be, ‘Glory be to You, God!’ their greeting, ‘Peace,’ and the last part of their prayer, ‘Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.’
Yusuf Ali (This will be) their cry therein: "Glory to Thee, O Allah!" And "Peace" will be their greeting therein! and the close of their cry will be: "Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!"
W. Khan In that [state of happiness] they will call out; ‘Glory be to You, O God!’, while their greeting in it will be: ‘Peace!’ And the close of their call will be, ‘All praise is due to God, the Lord of the Universe!’
M. Sarwar Their prayer shall be, "Glory be to you Lord," and their greeting, "Peace be with you," and the only other words (of worldly speech) they will speak will be, "It is God, Lord of the Universe, who deserves all praise."

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem If God were to hasten on for people the harm [they have earned] as they wish to hasten on the good, their time would already be up. But We leave those who do not expect to meet Us to wander blindly in their excesses.
Yusuf Ali If Allah were to hasten for men the ill (they have earned) as they would fain hasten on the good,- then would their respite be settled at once. But We leave those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, in their trespasses, wandering in distraction to and fro.
W. Khan Had God hastened the punishment of men as He hastens the good, the end of their term of life would already have been reached. We leave those who do not hope to meet Us groping along in their arrogance.
M. Sarwar Had God been as hasty to punish people as they were hasty to achieve good, their life would have already ended. We will leave those who have no hope of receiving Our mercy, in the life hereafter, to continue blindly in their transgression.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem When trouble befalls man he cries out to Us, whether lying on his side, sitting, or standing, but as soon as We relieve him of his trouble he goes on his way as if he had never cried out to Us to remove his trouble. In this way the deeds of such heedless people are made attractive to them.
Yusuf Ali When trouble toucheth a man, He crieth unto Us (in all postures)- lying down on his side, or sitting, or standing. But when We have solved his trouble, he passeth on his way as if he had never cried to Us for a trouble that touched him! thus do the deeds of transgressors seem fair in their eyes!
W. Khan Whenever any trouble befalls a person, he prays to Us all the time, lying on his side, sitting or standing; but when We remove his trouble, he goes on his way as if he had never prayed to Us for the removal of his trouble. Thus it is that the doings of the transgressors are made to look fair to them.
M. Sarwar When the human being is affected by hardship, he starts to pray while lying on his side, sitting or standing, but when We relieve him from hardship, he starts to act as though he had never prayed to Us to save him from the misfortune. This is how transgressors' deeds are made attractive to them.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem Before you people, We destroyed whole generations when they did evil- their messengers brought them clear signs but they refused to believe. This is how We repay the guilty.
Yusuf Ali Generations before you We destroyed when they did wrong: their messengers came to them with clear-signs, but they would not believe! thus do We requite those who sin!
W. Khan And indeed, before your time We destroyed [whole] generations when they [persistently] did evil; their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they would not believe. Thus We requite the guilty.
M. Sarwar We destroyed certain generations who lived before you because of their injustice. Our Messengers came to them and showed them miracles, but they would not believe. Thus do We punish the criminals.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem Later We made you their successors in the land, to see how you would behave.
Yusuf Ali Then We made you heirs in the land after them, to see how ye would behave!
W. Khan Then We made you their successors in the land, so that We might observe how you would conduct yourselves.
M. Sarwar We have made you their successors in the land so that We could see how you behaved.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem When Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet with Us say, ‘Bring [us] a different Quran, or change it.’ [Prophet], say, ‘It is not for me to change it of my own accord; I only follow what is revealed to me, for I fear the torment of an awesome Day, if I were to disobey my Lord.’
Yusuf Ali But when Our Clear Signs are rehearsed unto them, those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, Say: "Bring us a reading other than this, or change this," Say: "It is not for me, of my own accord, to change it: I follow naught but what is revealed unto me: if I were to disobey my Lord, I should myself fear the penalty of a Great Day (to come)."
W. Khan When Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us say, ‘Bring us a different Quran, or make some changes in it.’ Say, ‘It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I follow only what is revealed to me. I fear, if I were to disobey my Lord, the punishment on a Dreadful Day.’
M. Sarwar Whenever Our authoritative revelations are recited to those who do not wish to meet Us in the life hereafter, say, "Bring us another book besides this one or change it." (Muhammad), tell them, "I can not change it myself. I only follow what is revealed to me. I fear that for disobeying my Lord I shall be punished on the great (Day of Judgment).

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘If God had so willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. I lived a whole lifetime among you before it came to me. How can you not use your reason?’
Yusuf Ali Say: "If Allah had so willed, I should not have rehearsed it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. A whole life-time before this have I tarried amongst you: will ye not then understand?"
W. Khan Say, ‘If God had so wished, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have brought it to your knowledge. Indeed, I have spent a whole lifetime among you before it came to me. How can you not use your reason?’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "Had God wanted I would not have recited it (the Book) to you nor would I have told you anything about it. I lived among you for a whole life-time before it was revealed. Will you then not understand?

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem Who could be more wicked than someone who invents lies against God or denies His revelations? The guilty will never prosper.
Yusuf Ali Who doth more wrong than such as forge a lie against Allah, or deny His Signs? But never will prosper those who sin.
W. Khan Who is more unjust than the man who invents a falsehood about God or denies His signs? Surely, the guilty shall never prosper.
M. Sarwar Who is more unjust than one who invents falsehood against God or calls His revelations lies? The criminals will certainly have no happiness.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem They worship alongside God things that can neither harm nor benefit them, and say, ‘These are our intercessors with God.’ Say, ‘Do you think you can tell God about something He knows not to exist in the heavens or earth? Glory be to Him! He is far above the partner-gods they associate with Him!
Yusuf Ali They serve, besides Allah, things that hurt them not nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say: "Do ye indeed inform Allah of something He knows not, in the heavens or on earth?- Glory to Him! and far is He above the partners they ascribe (to Him)!"
W. Khan Instead of God they worship what neither harms nor benefits them, and they say: ‘These are our intercessors with God.’ Say, ‘Do you inform God about something in heavens and on earth that He does not know? Glory be to Him; may He be Exalted over whatever they associate [with Him]!’
M. Sarwar (Some people) worship things other than God which harm nor benefit them. They say, "These (idols) are our intercessors before God." (Muhammad), tell them, "Are you trying to tell God about something that He does not find in the heavens or earth? God is too Glorious to be considered equal to idols."

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem All people were originally one single community, but later they differed. If it had not been for a word from your Lord, the preordained judgement would already have been passed between them regarding their differences.
Yusuf Ali Mankind was but one nation, but differed (later). Had it not been for a word that went forth before from thy Lord, their differences would have been settled between them.
W. Khan Mankind was only one community, but then they differed, and had it not been for a prior word from your Lord, their differences would have been settled for them.
M. Sarwar All people (once) followed one belief. Then they began to follow different beliefs. Had not a word of your Lord (His decision to give every one time and free will) been decreed, God would already have settled their differences.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem They say, ‘Why has no miraculous sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say [Prophet], ‘Only God knows the unseen, so wait- I too am waiting.’
Yusuf Ali They say: "Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord?" Say: "The Unseen is only for Allah (to know), then wait ye: I too will wait with you."
W. Khan They ask, ‘Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’Tell them, ‘God alone has knowledge of the unseen. So wait; I too will wait with you.’
M. Sarwar They (unbelievers) say, "Why has his Lord not given him some miracles to (support his claim of being His Messenger)?" Say "(The knowledge) of the unseen certainly belongs to God. Wait and I too shall be waiting with you.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem No sooner do We let people taste some mercy after some hardship has afflicted them, than they begin to scheme against Our revelations. Say, ‘God schemes even faster.’ Our messengersrecord all your scheming.
Yusuf Ali When We make mankind taste of some mercy after adversity hath touched them, behold! they take to plotting against Our Signs! Say: "Swifter to plan is Allah!" Verily, Our messengers record all the plots that ye make!
W. Khan Whenever We let mankind taste mercy after some adversity has afflicted them, they forthwith turn to devising false arguments against Our signs. Say, ‘God is swifter in His devising! Our angels are recording your intrigues.’
M. Sarwar When people are granted mercy after having suffered hardship, they begin to plot against Our revelations. Say, "God is the most swift in His plans." Our angelic messengers record all that you plot.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are sailing on ships and rejoicing in the favouring wind, a storm arrives: waves come at those on board from all sides and they feel there is no escape. Then they pray to God, professing sincere devotion to Him, ‘If You save us from this we shall be truly thankful.’
Yusuf Ali He it is Who enableth you to traverse through land and sea; so that ye even board ships;- they sail with them with a favourable wind, and they rejoice thereat; then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides, and they think they are being overwhelmed: they cry unto Allah, sincerely offering (their) duty unto Him saying, "If thou dost deliver us from this, we shall truly show our gratitude!"
W. Khan It is God who enables you to travel on land and sea. And when you are sailing on ships and rejoicing in the favourable wind, a storm arrives, and the waves surge upon those on board from every side and they think they are encompassed, then they make a fervent appeal to God, saying in all sincerity, ‘If You deliver us from this, we will surely be of the thankful.’
M. Sarwar When you are rejoicing in a boat, a favorable breeze and a violent storm arises with waves surrounding you from all sides. Thinking that you will not survive, you start to pray sincerely to God. In prayer, you say, "If You rescue us from this we shall certainly be grateful".

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem Yet no sooner does He save them than, back on land, they behave outrageously against all that is right. People! Your outrageous behaviour only works against yourselves. Take your little enjoyment in this present life; in the end you will return to Us and We shall confront you with everything you have done.
Yusuf Ali But when he delivereth them, behold! they transgress insolently through the earth in defiance of right! O mankind! your insolence is against your own souls,- an enjoyment of the life of the present: in the end, to Us is your return, and We shall show you the truth of all that ye did.
W. Khan But when He has delivered them, they begin, wrongfully to commit excesses in the land. O you men, your excesses only affect your own selves. Have the enjoyment of the present life. Then to Us you shall return; and We will inform you of all that you have done.
M. Sarwar When We saved you, you started to rebel unjustly in the land. People, your rebellion will only harm yourselves. You may enjoy the worldly life but to Us you will all return and We will let you know all that you had done.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem The life of this world is like this: rain that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which humans and animals eat. But when the earth has taken on its finest appearance, and adorns itself, and its people think they have power over it, then the fate We commanded comes to it, by night or by day, and We reduce it to stubble, as if it had not flourished just the day before. This is the way We explain the revelations for those who reflect.
Yusuf Ali The likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies: by its mingling arises the produce of the earth- which provides food for men and animals: (It grows) till the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out (in beauty): the people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it: There reaches it Our command by night or by day, and We make it like a harvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished only the day before! thus do We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect.
W. Khan The life of the world is like the water which We send down from the sky, and which is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which men and cattle eat. But when the earth has taken on its finest appearance, and looks beautiful, and its people think they have it under their control, then by day or by night, Our command comes to it and We convert it into a field of stubble, as if nothing had existed there the day before. Thus We make plain Our revelations for those who reflect.
M. Sarwar The example of the worldly life is like the water sent down from the sky which becomes mixed with the earth's produce that people and cattle consume. When the land becomes fertile and pleasant, people think that they have control over it. At Our command during the night or day, the land becomes as barren as if it had no richness the day before. Thus, do We explain the evidence (of the truth) for the people who reflect.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem But God invites [everyone] to the Home of Peace, and guides whoever He will to a straight path.
Yusuf Ali But Allah doth call to the Home of Peace: He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight.
W. Khan God calls man to the home of peace and He guides whom He wills to a straight path.
M. Sarwar God invites every one to the House of Peace and guides whomever He wants to the right path.

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Those who did well will have the best reward and more besides. Neither darkness nor shame will cover their faces: these are the companions in Paradise, and there they will remain.
Yusuf Ali To those who do right is a goodly (reward)- Yea, more (than in measure)! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! they are companions of the garden; they will abide therein (for aye)!
W. Khan Those who do good works shall have a good reward and more besides. No darkness and no ignominy shall cover their faces. They are destined for Paradise wherein they shall dwell forever.
M. Sarwar The righteous will receive good reward for their deeds and more. Their faces will suffer no disgrace or ignominy. They will be the dwellers of Paradise wherein they will live forever.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem As for those who did evil, each evil deed will be requited by its equal and humiliation will cover them- no one will protect them against God- as though their faces were covered with veils cut from the darkness of the night. These are the inmates of the Fire, and there they shall remain.
Yusuf Ali But those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil: ignominy will cover their (faces): No defender will they have from (the wrath of) Allah: Their faces will be covered, as it were, with pieces from the depth of the darkness of night: they are companions of the Fire: they will abide therein (for aye)!
W. Khan But as for those who have done evil deeds, the recompense shall be in proportion. They will have none to defend them against God. Ignominy shall cover them, as though their faces were veiled by the night’s own darkness. It is they who are destined for the fire, where they will live forever.
M. Sarwar The recompense for the evil deeds will be equally evil (not more) and the faces of the evil-doers will suffer from disgrace. No one can protect them from the wrath of God. Their faces will become dark as if covered by the pitch-darkness of night. They will be the dwellers of hell wherein they will remain forever.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem On the Day We gather them all together, We shall say to those who associate partners with God, ‘Stay in your place, you and your partner-gods.’ Then We shall separate them, and their partner-gods will say, ‘It was not us you worshipped-
Yusuf Ali One day shall We gather them all together. Then shall We say to those who joined gods (with Us): "To your place! ye and those ye joined as 'partners' We shall separate them, and their "Partners" shall say: "It was not us that ye worshipped!
W. Khan On the Day when We gather them all together, We shall say to those who ascribed partners to God, ‘Keep to your places, you and your partners!’Then We shall separate them from one another and their partner-gods will say, ‘It was not us that you worshipped.
M. Sarwar We will tell the pagans on the day when every one is resurrected, "Stand with your idols wherever you are." Then We will separate them (from their idols) and their idols will protest against them saying, "You did not worship us.

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem God is witness enough between us and you- we had no idea that you worshipped us.’
Yusuf Ali "Enough is Allah for a witness between us and you: we certainly knew nothing of your worship of us!"
W. Khan God suffices as a witness between us and you. We were entirely unaware that you worshipped us.’
M. Sarwar God is Sufficient Witness for us that we were not aware of your worship".

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem Every soul will realize, then and there, what it did in the past. They will be returned to God, their rightful Lord, and their invented [gods] will desert them.
Yusuf Ali There will every soul prove (the fruits of) the deeds it sent before: they will be brought back to Allah their rightful Lord, and their invented falsehoods will leave them in the lurch.
W. Khan Then every soul shall realize what it has done. They shall be returned to God, their true Master, and anything they had invented will forsake them.
M. Sarwar There every soul will experience the result of all that it had done. They will be brought into the presence of God, their true Lord, and all that they falsely invented will vanish.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Who controls hearing and sight? Who brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living, and who governs everything?’ They are sure to say, ‘God.’ Then say, ‘So why do you not take heed of Him?
Yusuf Ali Say: "Who is it that sustains you (in life) from the sky and from the earth? or who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And who is it that brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living? and who is it that rules and regulates all affairs?" They will soon say, "Allah". Say, "will ye not then show piety (to Him)?"
W. Khan Say, ‘Who provides [sustenance] for you from heaven and earth? Who is it who controls the ears and the eyes? Who brings forth the living from the dead, and the dead from the living? And who governs all affairs?’ They will say, ‘God’. Then say, ‘Will you not then fear Him?
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them, "Who gives you sustenance from the heavens and earth, who truly possesses (your) hearing and seeing abilities, who brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living and who regulates (the whole Universe)? They will reply, "God." Ask them, "Why, then, do you not have fear of Him?"

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem That is God, your Lord, the Truth. Apart from the Truth, what is there except error? So how is it that you are dissuaded?’
Yusuf Ali Such is Allah, your real Cherisher and Sustainer: apart from truth, what (remains) but error? How then are ye turned away?
W. Khan That is God, your true Lord. What is there, besides the truth, but error? How then can you turn away?’
M. Sarwar Thus is God your true Lord. In the absence of truth there is nothing but falsehood. Then where are you turning?

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem In this way, your Lord’s word about those who defy [the Truth] has been proved- they do not believe.
Yusuf Ali Thus is the word of thy Lord proved true against those who rebel: Verily they will not believe.
W. Khan Thus the Word of your Lord is proved true against those who are disobedient. They will not believe.
M. Sarwar The decree of your Lord that the evil-doers will not have faith has already been issued.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem Ask them, ‘Can any of your partner-gods originate creation, then bring it back to life again in the end?’ Say, ‘It is God that originates creation, and then brings it back to life, so how can you be misled?’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Of your 'partners', can any originate creation and repeat it?" Say: "It is Allah Who originates creation and repeats it: then how are ye deluded away (from the truth)?"
W. Khan Ask then, ‘Can any of your partner-gods originate creation, and then reproduce it?’ Say, ‘It is God who originates creation and then restores it: how then are you so misled?’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them,"Can any of your idols create something (cause it to die), and then bring it back to life again?" Say, "Only God can originate the creation and bring it to life again. Where have you strayed?"

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Can any of your partner-gods show the way to the Truth?’ Say, ‘God shows the way to the Truth. Is someone who shows the way to the Truth more worthy to be followed, or someone who cannot find the way unless he himself is shown? What is the matter with you? How do you judge?’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Of your 'partners' is there any that can give any guidance towards truth?" Say: "It is Allah Who gives guidance towards truth, is then He Who gives guidance to truth more worthy to be followed, or he who finds not guidance (himself) unless he is guided? what then is the matter with you? How judge ye?"
W. Khan Say, ‘Does any of your partner-gods guide one to the Truth?’ Say, ‘It is God who guides to the truth. Then, is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed or one who cannot find the way himself unless he be guided? What is the matter with you? How ill you judge!’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them, "Can any of your idols guide you to the Truth?" Say, "Only God guides to the Truth." Is the one who guides to the Truth a proper guide or one who himself cannot find guidance unless he is guided (by others)? What is wrong with you that you judge (so unjustly)?

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem Most of them follow nothing but assumptions, but assumptions can be of no value at all against the Truth: God is well aware of what they do.
Yusuf Ali But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against truth. Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do.
W. Khan Most of them follow nothing but mere conjecture. But conjecture is of no use against the Truth. God is well aware of what they do.
M. Sarwar Most of the unbelievers follow only conjecture which certainly cannot serve as a substitute for the Truth. God knows well what they do.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Nor could this Quran have been devised by anyone other than God. It is a confirmation of what was revealed before it and an explanation of the Scripture- let there be no doubt about it- it is from the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali This Qur'an is not such as can be produced by other than Allah; on the contrary it is a confirmation of (revelations) that went before it, and a fuller explanation of the Book - wherein there is no doubt - from the Lord of the worlds.
W. Khan This Quran is not such as could have been produced by anyone but God. It fulfills that [the predictions] which came before it and gives a fuller explanation of the [earlier] Revelations. There is no doubt about it: it is from the Lord of the Universe.
M. Sarwar No one could have composed this Quran besides God. This confirms the existing Book (the Bible) and explains itself. There is no doubt that it is from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem Or do they say, ‘He has devised it’? Say, ‘Then produce a sura like it, and call on anyone you can beside God if you are telling the truth.’
Yusuf Ali Or do they say, "He forged it"? say: "Bring then a Sura like unto it, and call (to your aid) anyone you can besides Allah, if it be ye speak the truth!"
W. Khan Do they say, ‘He has fabricated it?’ Say, ‘Bring me one chapter like it. Call on whom you may besides God to help you, if what you say be true!’
M. Sarwar Do they say that Muhammad has invented it? (Muhammad), tell them, "If your claim is true, compose only one chapter like it and call on anyone besides God for help.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem But they are denying what they cannot comprehend- its prophecy has yet to be fulfilled for them. In the same way, those before them refused to believe- see what was the end of those evildoers!
Yusuf Ali Nay, they charge with falsehood that whose knowledge they cannot compass, even before the elucidation thereof hath reached them: thus did those before them make charges of falsehood: but see what was the end of those who did wrong!
W. Khan Indeed, they are denying something which they cannot comprehend; the reality not yet having dawned on them. Likewise those before them rejected the truth. But see what was the end of the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar They call a lie something that is beyond the limit of their knowledge and whose interpretation has not yet been revealed. Some people who lived before them also called Our revelations lies. Consider how terrible was the end of the unjust people!

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem Some of them believe in it, and some do not: your Lord knows best those who cause corruption.
Yusuf Ali Of them there are some who believe therein, and some who do not: and thy Lord knoweth best those who are out for mischief.
W. Khan Some of them will believe in it [the Quran], while others will not. And your Lord is fully aware of the evil-doers.
M. Sarwar Some of them believe in the Quran and others do not. Your Lord knows best the evil doers.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem If they do not believe you, [Prophet], say, ‘I act for myself, and you for yourselves. You are not responsible for my actions nor am I responsible for yours.’
Yusuf Ali If they charge thee with falsehood, say: "My work to me, and yours to you! ye are free from responsibility for what I do, and I for what ye do!"
W. Khan If they should reject you, say, ‘My deeds are mine and your deeds are yours. You are not accountable for my actions, nor am I accountable for what you do.’
M. Sarwar If they call you a liar, tell them, "Let each one of us follow his own way. You will not be responsible for what I do and I will not be responsible for what you do".

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem Some of them do listen to you: but can you make the deaf hear if they will not use their minds?
Yusuf Ali Among them are some who (pretend to) listen to thee: But canst thou make the deaf to hear,- even though they are without understanding?
W. Khan Some of them appear to be listening to you; but can you make the deaf hear, incapable as they are of understanding?
M. Sarwar Some of them will listen to you, but are you supposed to make the deaf hear even if they have no understanding?

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem Some of them look at you: but can you guide the blind if they will not see?
Yusuf Ali And among them are some who look at thee: but canst thou guide the blind,- even though they will not see?
W. Khan Some of them look fixedly at you; but can you make the blind see, bereft as they are of sight?
M. Sarwar Some of them will look at you, but are you supposed to guide the blind even if they have no vision?

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem God does not wrong people at all- it is they who wrong themselves.
Yusuf Ali Verily Allah will not deal unjustly with man in aught: It is man that wrongs his own soul.
W. Khan Surely, God does not wrong people at all, but people wrong themselves.
M. Sarwar God does not do the least bit of injustice to anyone but people wrong themselves.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem On the Day He gathers them together, it will be as if they have stayed [in the world] no longer than a single hour, and they will recognize one another. Those who denied the meeting with God will be the losers, for they did not follow the right guidance.
Yusuf Ali One day He will gather them together: (It will be) as if they had tarried but an hour of a day: they will recognise each other: assuredly those will be lost who denied the meeting with Allah and refused to receive true guidance.
W. Khan And on the Day when He shall gather them together, it will seem to them as if they had not tarried in the world longer than an hour of a day. They will recognize one another; lost indeed will be those who considered it a lie that they were destined to meet God, and did not follow the right path.
M. Sarwar On the day when they will be resurrected, their worldly life will seem to them only as an hour of a day and they all will recognize each other. Those who called the receiving of mercy from God a lie are certainly lost. They did not have the right guidance.

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem Whether We let you [Prophet] see some of the punishment We have threatened them with, or cause you to die [first], they will return to Us: God is witness to what they do.
Yusuf Ali Whether We show thee (realised in thy life-time) some part of what We promise them,- or We take thy soul (to Our Mercy) (Before that),- in any case, to Us is their return: ultimately Allah is witness, to all that they do.
W. Khan Whether We show you something of what We have promised them or cause you to die [before that], to Us they shall return. God is Witness to all that they do.
M. Sarwar When if We show you them suffering Our retribution or you die before their suffering, (they will not be able to escape Our punishment) they will all return to Us. God bears witness to whatever they do.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem Every community is sent a mes-senger, and when their messenger comes, they will be judged justly; they will not be wronged.
Yusuf Ali To every people (was sent) a messenger: when their messenger comes (before them), the matter will be judged between them with justice, and they will not be wronged.
W. Khan Every nation has a messenger. Once their messenger has come, judgement will be passed upon them in all fairness and they will not be wronged.
M. Sarwar A Messenger is appointed for all people. When the Messenger for them came he judged among them fairly and they were not wronged.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem They ask, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say is true?’
Yusuf Ali They say: "When will this promise come to pass,- if ye speak the truth?"
W. Khan They say, ‘When will this promise come to pass—if you speak the truth?’
M. Sarwar They ask, "If you (believers) speak the truth, when will your promise (about the Day of Judgment) be fulfilled?"

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘I cannot control any harm or benefit that comes to me, except as God wills. There is an appointed term for every community, and when it is reached they can neither delay nor hasten it, even for a moment.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except as Allah willeth. To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance (it in anticipation)."
W. Khan Say, ‘I have no control over any harm or benefit to myself, except by the will of God. For every people, however, there is an appointed term. When the end of their term arrives, they cannot postpone it for an hour, nor can they advance it.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "I have no control over my suffering or benefits unless God wills. Every nation is destined to live for an appointed time. They can neither delay that time nor can they cause it to come sooner.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Think: if His punishment were to come to you, during the night or day, what part of it would the guilty wish to hasten?
Yusuf Ali Say: "Do ye see,- if His punishment should come to you by night or by day,- what portion of it would the sinners wish to hasten?
W. Khan Say, ‘If His punishment comes upon you in the dead of night, or by the light of day, how will the guilty escape it?
M. Sarwar Ask them, "What benefit can criminals get from their demand that God must punish them immediately if His words are true?" Whether His punishment befalls them during the day or night (they will not be able to escape).

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem Will you believe in it, when it actually happens?’ It will be said, ‘Now [you believe], when [before] you sought to hasten it?’
Yusuf Ali "Would ye then believe in it at last, when it actually cometh to pass? (It will then be said): 'Ah! now? and ye wanted (aforetime) to hasten it on!'
W. Khan Will you believe in it only after it has overtaken you, although it was your wish to hurry it on?’
M. Sarwar Besides, if He was to send them the punishment which they want to quickly experience, would they then have faith?

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem It will be said to the evildoers, ‘Taste lasting punishment. Why should you be rewarded for anything but what you did?’
Yusuf Ali "At length will be said to the wrong-doers: 'Taste ye the enduring punishment! ye get but the recompense of what ye earned!'"
W. Khan Then the evil-doers will be told, ‘Taste the everlasting punishment. Have you not been rewarded according to your deeds?’
M. Sarwar The unjust will be told, "Suffer the everlasting torment. Do you expect a recompense other than what you deserve?

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem They ask you [Prophet], ‘Is it true?’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is true, and you cannot escape it.’
Yusuf Ali They seek to be informed by thee: "Is that true?" Say: "Aye! by my Lord! it is the very truth! and ye cannot frustrate it!"
W. Khan They enquire of you if this will really happen. Tell them, ‘Yes, by my Lord. Most certainly it will happen, and you cannot avert it.’
M. Sarwar They ask you, "Is that (punishment) true?" Tell them, "It certainly is. I swear by my Lord. You can not escape from (God's retribution)".

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem Every soul that has done evil, if it possessed all that is on the earth, would gladly offer it as ransom. When they see the punishment, they will repent in secret, but they will be judged with justice and will not be wronged.
Yusuf Ali Every soul that hath sinned, if it possessed all that is on earth, would fain give it in ransom: They would declare (their) repentance when they see the penalty: but the judgment between them will be with justice, and no wrong will be done unto them.
W. Khan If every wrongdoer possessed all that was on the earth, he would seek to ransom himself with it: when they see the punishment, they will repent in secret. But judgement will be passed upon them in all fairness, and they will not be wronged.
M. Sarwar (On the Day of Judgment) to redeem oneself of one's injustice, one would gladly spend the wealth of the whole earth if it were possible. On seeing the torment one will try to hide his regret. They will all be judged fairly and no wrong will be done to them.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem It is to God that everything in the heavens and the earth truly belongs: God’s promise is true, but most people do not realize it.
Yusuf Ali Is it not (the case) that to Allah belongeth whatever is in the heavens and on earth? Is it not (the case) that Allah's promise is assuredly true? Yet most of them understand not.
W. Khan Assuredly, everything that is in the heavens and on the earth belongs to God. Assuredly, God’s promise is true. Yet most of them do not realize it.
M. Sarwar All that is in the heavens and the earth certainly belongs to God and His promise is true, but many people do not know this.

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem It is He who gives life and takes it, and you will all be returned to Him.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who giveth life and who taketh it, and to Him shall ye all be brought back.
W. Khan He gives life and brings about death, and to Him you shall all return.
M. Sarwar It is God who gives life and causes things to die. To Him you will all return.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem People, a teaching from your Lord has come to you, a healing for what is in [your] hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.
Yusuf Ali O mankind! there hath come to you a direction from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts,- and for those who believe, a guidance and a Mercy.
W. Khan O mankind! There has come to you an admonition from your Lord, a cure for what is in the hearts, and a guide and a blessing to true believers.
M. Sarwar People, good advice has come to you from your Lord a (spiritual) cure, a guide and a mercy for the believers.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘In God’s grace and mercy let them rejoice: these are better than all they accumulate.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "In the bounty of Allah. And in His Mercy,- in that let them rejoice": that is better than the (wealth) they hoard.
W. Khan Say, ‘In the grace and mercy of God let them rejoice, for these are better than the worldly riches which they hoard.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "To be happy with the favors and mercy of God is better than whatever you accumulate".

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Think about the provision God has sent down for you, some of which you have made unlawful and some lawful.’ Say, ‘Has God given you permission [to do this], or are you inventing lies about God?’
Yusuf Ali Say: "See ye what things Allah hath sent down to you for sustenance? Yet ye hold forbidden some things thereof and (some things) lawful." Say: "Hath Allah indeed permitted you, or do ye invent (things) to attribute to Allah?"
W. Khan Say, ‘Have you considered the provision God has sent down for you, and have you made some of it unlawful and some lawful?’ Say, ‘Has God given you permission [to do this], or are you inventing falsehoods about God?’
M. Sarwar Ask them, "Have you considered that out of the sustenance which God has given you, you made some of it lawful and some unlawful? Did God permit you to do this or are you ascribing falsehood to Him?"

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem What will those people who invent lies about Him think on the Day of Resurrection? God is bountiful towards people, but most of them do not give thanks.
Yusuf Ali And what think those who invent lies against Allah, of the Day of Judgment? Verily Allah is full of bounty to mankind, but most of them are ungrateful.
W. Khan What will they think, those who invent falsehoods about God, on the Day of Resurrection? God is bountiful to men: yet most of them are not grateful.
M. Sarwar What do those who ascribe falsehood to God think of the Day of Judgment? God is generous to the human being, yet many do not give thanks.

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem In whatever matter you [Prophet] may be engaged and whatever part of the Quran you are reciting, whatever work you [people] are doing, We witness you when you are engaged in it. Not even the weight of a speck of dust in the earth or sky escapes your Lord, nor anything lesser or greater: it is all written in a clear record.
Yusuf Ali In whatever business thou mayest be, and whatever portion thou mayest be reciting from the Qur'an,- and whatever deed ye (mankind) may be doing,- We are witnesses thereof when ye are deeply engrossed therein. Nor is hidden from thy Lord (so much as) the weight of an atom on the earth or in heaven. And not the least and not the greatest of these things but are recorded in a clear record.
W. Khan In whatever activity you may be engaged, and whichever part of the Quran you recite, and whatever deed you do, We are witness to it when you are engaged in it. Not the smallest particle on the earth or in heaven is hidden from your Lord; and there is nothing smaller or bigger but is recorded in a clear Book.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), We bear witness to all your affairs; whatever you recite from the Quran and whatever you (people) do. Nothing in the heavens or the earth is hidden from your Lord, even that which is as small as an atom's weight or greater or smaller. All is recorded in the glorious Book.

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem But for those who are on God’s side there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.
Yusuf Ali Behold! verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve;
W. Khan Those who are close to God shall certainly have no fear, nor shall they grieve.
M. Sarwar The friends of God will certainly have nothing to fear, nor will they be grieved.

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem For those who believe and are conscious of God,
Yusuf Ali Those who believe and (constantly) guard against evil;-
W. Khan For those who believe and are mindful of God,
M. Sarwar Those who have faith and fear God

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem for them there is good news in this life and in the Hereafter- there is no changing the promises of God- that is truly the supreme triumph.
Yusuf Ali For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present and in the Hereafter; no change can there be in the words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme felicity.
W. Khan there is good news in this life and in the Hereafter: the Word of God shall never change. That is the supreme triumph.
M. Sarwar will receive glad news both in this life and in the life hereafter. The words of God do not change. This alone is the supreme triumph

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem Do not let their words grieve you [Prophet]. Power belongs entirely to God; He hears all and knows all;
Yusuf Ali Let not their speech grieve thee: for all power and honour belong to Allah: It is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).
W. Khan Do not let their words grieve you. Surely, all might and glory belongs to God alone; He is the all-hearing, the all-knowing.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), let not their words disappoint you; all dignity belongs to God. He is All-hearing and All-knowing.

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem indeed, all who are in the heavens and on the earth belong to Him. Those who call upon others beside God are not really following partner-gods; they are only following assumptions and telling lies.
Yusuf Ali Behold! verily to Allah belong all creatures, in the heavens and on earth. What do they follow who worship as His "partners" other than Allah? They follow nothing but fancy, and they do nothing but lie.
W. Khan Surely, all who are in the heavens and on the earth belong to Him. What do those follow, who appeal to associates instead of to God? They merely follow conjecture and they are only guessing.
M. Sarwar Does not all that is in the heavens and the earth belong to God? (The unbelievers) who worship the idols instead of God follow only conjecture. What they preach are mere lies.

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem It is He who made the night so that you can rest in it and the daylight so that you can see- there truly are signs in this for those who hear.
Yusuf Ali He it is That hath made you the night that ye may rest therein, and the day to make things visible (to you). Verily in this are signs for those who listen (to His Message).
W. Khan It is He who has made the night dark for you so that you may rest in it, and the day a source of light. Surely, there are signs in this for a people who listen.
M. Sarwar It is God who has made the night for you to rest and has filled the day with light (as a means of visibility). In this there is evidence (of the existence of God) for the people who hear.

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem They say, ‘God has children!’ May He be exalted! He is the Self-Sufficient One; everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. You have no authority to say this. How dare you say things about God without any knowledge?
Yusuf Ali They say: "Allah hath begotten a son!" - Glory be to Him! He is self-sufficient! His are all things in the heavens and on earth! No warrant have ye for this! say ye about Allah what ye know not?
W. Khan They say, ‘God has begotten a son.’ Glory be to Him. He is the Self-Sufficient One; everything in the heavens and on the earth belongs to Him. Do you have any authority for this? Would you ascribe to God something which you do not know?
M. Sarwar Some people have said that God has begotten a son. God is too Glorious to have a son! God is Self-sufficient and to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. In this, you (people) have no authority. Do you ascribe to God things of which you have no knowledge?

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘Those who invent lies about God will not prosper.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Those who invent a lie against Allah will never prosper."
W. Khan Say, ‘Those who invent falsehoods about God shall not prosper.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "Those who invent falsehood against God will have no happiness".

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem They may have a little enjoyment in this world, but then they will return to Us. Then We shall make them taste severe punishment for persisting in blasphemy.
Yusuf Ali A little enjoyment in this world!- and then, to Us will be their return, then shall We make them taste the severest penalty for their blasphemies.
W. Khan Their portion is short-lived enjoyment in this world; but to Us they shall return. Then We shall make them taste a severe punishment, because of their denial of truth.
M. Sarwar They may consider it a means of enjoyment in this life but (on the Day of Judgment) they will all return to Us. Then they will suffer for their disbelief the most severe punishment.

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem Tell them the story of Noah. He said to his people, ‘My people, if my presence among you and my reminding you of God’s signs is too much for you, then I put my trust in God. Agree on your course of action, you and your partner-gods- do not be hesitant or secretive about it- then carry out your decision on me and give me no respite.
Yusuf Ali Relate to them the story of Noah. Behold! he said to his people: "O my people, if it be hard on your (mind) that I should stay (with you) and commemorate the signs of Allah,- yet I put my trust in Allah. Get ye then an agreement about your plan and among your partners, so your plan be on to you dark and dubious. Then pass your sentence on me, and give me no respite.
W. Khan Tell them the story of Noah. He said to his people, ‘My people, if my presence among you and my preaching to you of God’s revelations offends you, know that I put my trust in God, so agree on your course of action, along with your partner-gods, and let no hesitation deflect you from it, then put it into effect against me, and give me no respite.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them the story of Noah who told his people, "Even if my belief and my preaching of the revelation of God seem strange to you, I put my trust in Him. Unite yourselves and seek help from your idols. You should not regret what you want to do, but should execute your plans against me without delay

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem But if you turn away, I have asked no reward from you; my reward is with God alone, and I am commanded to be one of those who devote themselves to Him.’
Yusuf Ali "But if ye turn back, (consider): no reward have I asked of you: my reward is only due from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit to Allah's will (in Islam)."
W. Khan If you turn away from me, remember I demand no recompense from you. Only God will reward me and I have been commanded to submit completely to Him.’
M. Sarwar If you turn away from my preaching, it will not harm me; I shall receive my reward from God who has commanded me to become a Muslim."

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem But they rejected him. We saved him and those with him on the Ark and let them survive; and We drowned those who denied Our revelations- see what was the end of those who were forewarned!
Yusuf Ali They rejected Him, but We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark, and We made them inherit (the earth), while We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our Signs. Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not)!
W. Khan Then they rejected him; then We delivered him and those with him in the Ark, and We made them successors; while We drowned the others who belied Our signs. Observe then the fate of those who had been forewarned.
M. Sarwar They rejected Noah. Then We saved him and his people in the Ark to make them the successors of the rest. The others, who had called Our revelations lies, were drowned. Consider the fate of those who (rejected) Our warnings!

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem Then, after him, We sent messengers to their peoples bringing them clear signs. But they would not believe in anything they had already rejected: in this way We seal the hearts of those who are full of hostility.
Yusuf Ali Then after him We sent (many) messengers to their peoples: they brought them Clear Signs, but they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus do We seal the hearts of the transgressors.
W. Khan After him We sent other messengers to their respective peoples, and they brought them clear proofs. But they would not believe in the truth, because they had rejected it before. Thus We seal up the hearts of the transgressors.
M. Sarwar After (Noah) We sent other Messengers to their people with clear authoritative evidence proving their prophetic claims). But how could the people believe what they had previously called lies? Thus do We seal the hearts of the transgressors.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem After them We sent Moses and Aaron with Our signs to Pharaoh and his leading supporters, but they acted arrogantly- they were wicked people.
Yusuf Ali Then after them sent We Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our Signs. But they were arrogant: they were a people in sin.
W. Khan Then We sent forth Moses and Aaron with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles, but they behaved arrogantly, for they were wicked people.
M. Sarwar Then We sent Moses and Aaron with Our miracles to the Pharaoh and his people. These people also proved to be arrogant. They were wicked people.

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem When the truth came to them from Us, they said, ‘This is blatant sorcery.’
Yusuf Ali When the Truth did come to them from Us, they said: "This is indeed evident sorcery!"
W. Khan When the truth came to them from Us, they said, ‘This is plain sorcery.’
M. Sarwar When the Truth from Us came, they called it simply magic.

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘Is this what you say about the Truth when it comes to you? Is this sorcery? Sorcerers never prosper.’
Yusuf Ali Said Moses: "Say ye (this) about the truth when it hath (actually) reached you? Is sorcery (like) this? But sorcerers will not prosper."
W. Khan Moses replied, ‘Do you speak thus of the truth after it has been brought to you? Can this be sorcery? Sorcerers never prosper.’
M. Sarwar Moses asked, "Why do you call the Truth which has come to you magic? Magicians, certainly, will not have happiness".

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Have you come to turn us away from the faith we found our fathers following, so that you and your brother can gain greatness in this land? We will never believe in you.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Hast thou come to us to turn us away from the ways we found our fathers following,- in order that thou and thy brother may have greatness in the land? But not we shall believe in you!"
W. Khan They said, ‘Have you come to turn us away from what we found our forefathers following, so that the two of you might become supreme in this land? We will never believe in you.’
M. Sarwar They asked Moses, "Have you come to turn us away from the faith of our fathers and to make yourselves the rulers in the land? We shall never accept your faith."

Verse 79

Abdel Haleem And Pharaoh said, ‘Bring me every learned sorcerer.’
Yusuf Ali Said Pharaoh: "Bring me every sorcerer well versed."
W. Khan Then Pharaoh said, ‘Bring me every skilled magician!’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh ordered every skillful magician to come into his presence.

Verse 80

Abdel Haleem When the sorcerers came, Moses said to them, ‘Throw down whatever you have.’
Yusuf Ali When the sorcerers came, Moses said to them: "Throw ye what ye (wish) to throw!"
W. Khan When the magicians came, Moses said to them, ‘Cast down whatever you are going to cast down.’
M. Sarwar When all the magicians were brought to his court, Moses asked them to cast down what they wanted to.

Verse 81

Abdel Haleem When they did so, Moses said, ‘Everything you have brought is sorcery and God will show it to be false. God does not make the work of mischief-makers right;
Yusuf Ali When they had had their throw, Moses said: "What ye have brought is sorcery: Allah will surely make it of no effect: for Allah prospereth not the work of those who make mischief.
W. Khan And when they had done so, Moses said, ‘What you have wrought is mere sorcery. Surely, God will bring it to nothing. Truly, God does not support the work of mischief-makers;
M. Sarwar When the magicians had thrown theirs, Moses said, "What you have performed is magic. God will certainly prove it to be false; He will not make the deeds of the corrupt people righteous.

Verse 82

Abdel Haleem He will uphold the Truth with His words, even if the evildoers hate it.’
Yusuf Ali "And Allah by His words doth prove and establish His truth, however much the sinners may hate it!"
W. Khan God establishes the truth by His words, however much the sinners may dislike it.’
M. Sarwar God will make the Truth stand supreme by His words, even though the wicked people dislike it."

Verse 83

Abdel Haleem But no one believed in Moses except a few of his own people, for fear that Pharaoh and their leaders would persecute them: Pharaoh was domineering in the land and prone to excess.
Yusuf Ali But none believed in Moses except some children of his people, because of the fear of Pharaoh and his chiefs, lest they should persecute them; and certainly Pharaoh was mighty on the earth and one who transgressed all bounds.
W. Khan But none save a few youths declared their faith in Moses, [while others held back] for fear that Pharaoh and his nobles would persecute them. Pharaoh was high and mighty in the land. And one who transgressed all bounds.
M. Sarwar No one believed in Moses except some young people of his own tribe who were at the same time very afraid of the persecution of the Pharaoh and his people. The Pharaoh was certainly a tyrant and a transgressor.

Verse 84

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘My people, if you have faith in God and are devoted to Him, put your trust in Him.’
Yusuf Ali Moses said: "O my people! If ye do (really) believe in Allah, then in Him put your trust if ye submit (your will to His)."
W. Khan Moses said, ‘O my people; if you believe in God, [and] if you have surrendered yourselves to Him, then in Him alone put your trust.’
M. Sarwar Moses told his people, "If you have submitted yourselves to God and have faith in Him, put your trust in Him".

Verse 85

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘We have put our trust in God. Lord! Do not make us an object of persecution for the oppressors.
Yusuf Ali They said: "In Allah do we put out trust. Our Lord! make us not a trial for those who practise oppression;
W. Khan They said, ‘In God we put our trust. Our Lord, make us not a trial [the subject of persecution] for the oppressors.
M. Sarwar They said, "In God do we trust. Lord, do not subject us to the persecution of the unjust ones,

Verse 86

Abdel Haleem Save us, in Your mercy, from those who reject [Your message].’
Yusuf Ali "And deliver us by Thy Mercy from those who reject (Thee)."
W. Khan And deliver us by Your mercy from the people who deny the truth.’
M. Sarwar Lord, save us, through Your mercy, from the disbelieving people."

Verse 87

Abdel Haleem We revealed to Moses and his brother: ‘House your people in Egypt and make these houses places of worship; keep up the prayer; give good news to the believers!’
Yusuf Ali We inspired Moses and his brother with this Message: "Provide dwellings for your people in Egypt, make your dwellings into places of worship, and establish regular prayers: and give glad tidings to those who believe!"
W. Khan We revealed [Our will] to Moses and his brother, saying, ‘Set aside for your people some houses in the city and turn them into places of worship, and be constant in prayer! And give [O Moses] the good news to the believers.’
M. Sarwar We sent a revelation to Moses and his brother to build houses for their people in the Pharaoh's town and to build them facing one another. (We told him) that therein they should pray and that Moses should give the glad news (of God's mercy) to the faithful ones.

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem And Moses said, ‘Our Lord, You have given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendour and wealth in this present life and here they are, Lord, leading others astray from Your path. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they do not believe until they see the agonizing torment.’
Yusuf Ali Moses prayed: "Our Lord! Thou hast indeed bestowed on Pharaoh and his chiefs splendour and wealth in the life of the present, and so, Our Lord, they mislead (men) from Thy Path. Deface, our Lord, the features of their wealth, and send hardness to their hearts, so they will not believe until they see the grievous penalty."
W. Khan Moses prayed, ‘Our Lord, You have bestowed upon Pharaoh and his nobles pomp and wealth in the present life, whereby they lead people astray from Your path. Our Lord, destroy their riches and harden their hearts, so that they shall not believe until they are faced with grievous punishment.’
M. Sarwar Moses said, "Lord, You have given the Pharaoh and his people great riches and splendor in this life and this makes them stray from Your path. Lord, destroy their wealth and harden their hearts in disbelief so that they will suffer the most painful torment".

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem God said, ‘Your prayers are answered, so stay on the right course, and do not follow the path of those who do not know.’
Yusuf Ali Allah said: "Accepted is your prayer (O Moses and Aaron)! So stand ye straight, and follow not the path of those who know not."
W. Khan God said, ‘Your prayer is granted, so continue, then, both of you, steadfastly on the right path, and do not follow the path of those who have no knowledge.’
M. Sarwar The Lord replied, "Moses, the prayer of your brother and yourself has been heard. Both of you must be steadfast (in your faith) and must not follow the ignorant ones."

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem We took the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his troops pursued them in arrogance and aggression. But as he was drowning he cried, ‘I believe there is no God except the one the Children of Israel believe in. I submit to Him.’
Yusuf Ali We took the Children of Israel across the sea: Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in insolence and spite. At length, when overwhelmed with the flood, he said: "I believe that there is no god except Him Whom the Children of Israel believe in: I am of those who submit (to Allah in Islam)."
W. Khan So We brought the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his troops pursued them arrogantly and aggressively. When he was about to drown, [Pharaoh] exclaimed, ‘I believe that there is no deity save Him in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of those who surrender themselves to Him!’
M. Sarwar We helped the children of Israel cross the sea safely. The Pharaoh and his army pursued the children of Israel with wickedness and hate until the Pharaoh was drowned. As he was drowning the Pharaoh said, "I declare that there is no God but the One in whom the children of Israel believe and I have submitted to the Word of God".

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem ‘Now? When you had always been a rebel, and a troublemaker!
Yusuf Ali (It was said to him): "Ah now!- But a little while before, wast thou in rebellion!- and thou didst mischief (and violence)!
W. Khan ‘Only now? When you had always been a rebel, and a wrongdoer.
M. Sarwar (God replied), "Now you declare belief in Me! but before this you were a disobedient rebel.

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem Today We shall save only your corpse as a sign to all posterity. A great many people fail to heed Our signs.’
Yusuf Ali "This day shall We save thee in the body, that thou mayest be a sign to those who come after thee! but verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Signs!"
W. Khan So We shall save your body this day, so that you may serve as a sign for those who come after you: for many people are indeed heedless of Our signs.’
M. Sarwar We will save your body on this day so that you may become evidence (of Our existence) for the coming generations; many people are unaware of such evidence."

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem We settled the Children of Israel in a good place and provided good things as sustenance for them. It was only after knowledge had come to them that they began to differ among themselves. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding their differences.
Yusuf Ali We settled the Children of Israel in a beautiful dwelling-place, and provided for them sustenance of the best: it was after knowledge had been granted to them, that they fell into schisms. Verily Allah will judge between them as to the schisms amongst them, on the Day of Judgment.
W. Khan We settled the Children of Israel in a blessed land, and We provided them with good things. And it was not until knowledge [of God’s revelation] was granted to them that they began to hold divergent views. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that in which they differed.
M. Sarwar We settled the children of Israel in a blessed land and provided them with pure sustenance. They did not create differences among themselves until after the knowledge had come to them. God will judge their differences on the Day of Judgment.

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem So if you [Prophet] are in doubt about what We have revealed to you, ask those who have been reading the scriptures before you. The Truth has come to you from your Lord, so be in no doubt and do not deny God’s signs-
Yusuf Ali If thou wert in doubt as to what We have revealed unto thee, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before thee: the Truth hath indeed come to thee from thy Lord: so be in no wise of those in doubt.
W. Khan If you are in any doubt concerning what We have sent down to you, then question those who have read the Book before you: the Truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be one of the doubters—
M. Sarwar If you (people ) have any doubt about what We have revealed to you (about the Day of Judgment and other matters of belief), ask those who read the Book that was revealed (to the Prophets who lived) before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord. Thus, do not doubt it (in your heart),

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem then you would become one of the losers.
Yusuf Ali Nor be of those who reject the signs of Allah, or thou shalt be of those who perish.
W. Khan do not be one who rejects God’s signs, for then you would become one of the losers.
M. Sarwar nor be of those who have called God's revelations lies lest you become lost.

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem Those against whom your Lord’s sentence is passed will not believe,
Yusuf Ali Those against whom the word of thy Lord hath been verified would not believe-
W. Khan Those against whom your Lord’s word has been confirmed will never believe;
M. Sarwar (Even though all kinds of miracles will be shown to them) those about whom the word of your Lord has been ordained, will not have faith

Verse 97

Abdel Haleem even if every sign comes to them, until they see the agonizing torment.
Yusuf Ali Even if every Sign was brought unto them,- until they see (for themselves) the penalty grievous.
W. Khan not even if every Sign were to come to them—until they see the painful punishment.
M. Sarwar until they face the most painful torment.

Verse 98

Abdel Haleem If only a single town had believed and benefited from its belief! Only Jonah’s people did so, and when they believed, We relieved them of the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world, and let them enjoy life for a time.
Yusuf Ali Why was there not a single township (among those We warned), which believed,- so its faith should have profited it,- except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the penalty of ignominy in the life of the present, and permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.
W. Khan Why was there no other people, save the people of Jonah, who should have believed so that their belief would have benefited them. Once they believed, We lifted the torment of shame from them during their worldly life and let them enjoy Our provision for a while.
M. Sarwar Why did no one except the people of Jonah believe (in their punishment before their death) so that they could have benefitted from their faith? When the people of Jonah believed, We saved them from a disgraceful torment in this life and provided them with the means of enjoyment for an appointed time.

Verse 99

Abdel Haleem Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed. So can you [Prophet] compel people to believe?
Yusuf Ali If it had been thy Lord's will, they would all have believed,- all who are on earth! wilt thou then compel mankind, against their will, to believe!
W. Khan Had your Lord pleased, all the people on earth would have believed in Him, without exception. So will you compel people to become believers?
M. Sarwar Had your Lord wished, the whole of mankind would have believed in Him. (Muhammad), do you force people to have faith?

Verse 100

Abdel Haleem No soul can believe except by God’s will, and He brings disgrace on those who do not use their reason.
Yusuf Ali No soul can believe, except by the will of Allah, and He will place doubt (or obscurity) on those who will not understand.
W. Khan No soul can believe except by the will of God. He will place the filth [of doubt] upon those who do not use their reason.
M. Sarwar No one can have faith without the permission of God. God will cast down filth on those who have no understanding.

Verse 101

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Look at what is in the heavens and on the earth.’ But what use are signs and warnings to people who will not believe?
Yusuf Ali Say: "Behold all that is in the heavens and on earth"; but neither Signs nor Warners profit those who believe not.
W. Khan Say, ‘Look at whatever [exists] in heavens and on earth.’ But signs and warnings do not benefit the unbelievers.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them to consider that which is in the heavens and the earth. Evidence and warnings are of no avail to the disbelieving people.

Verse 102

Abdel Haleem What are they waiting for but the punishment that came to those before them? Say, ‘Wait then, I am waiting too.’
Yusuf Ali Do they then expect (any thing) but (what happened in) the days of the men who passed away before them? Say: "Wait ye then: for I, too, will wait with you."
W. Khan What can they be waiting for but the punishment that came to those before them? Say, ‘So wait; I am one of those waiting with you.’
M. Sarwar What can they expect other than the kind of (punishment that befell the disbelieving people) who had gone before them? (Muhammad), tell them, "Wait and I too will be waiting with you."

Verse 103

Abdel Haleem In the end We shall save Our messengers and the believers. We take it upon Ourself to save the believers.
Yusuf Ali In the end We deliver Our messengers and those who believe: Thus is it fitting on Our part that We should deliver those who believe!
W. Khan Then We shall save Our messengers and those who believe. Thus We have made it incumbent upon Ourself to save the believers.
M. Sarwar We saved Our Messengers and those who believed; We must save the believers.

Verse 104

Abdel Haleem [Prophet] say, ‘People, even if you are in doubt about my religion, I do not worship those you worship other than God, but I worship God who will cause you to die, and I am commanded to be a believer.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O ye men! If ye are in doubt as to my religion, (behold!) I worship not what ye worship, other than Allah! But I worship Allah - Who will take your souls (at death): I am commanded to be (in the ranks) of the Believers,
W. Khan Say, ‘O people, if you are in doubt concerning my religion, then [know that] I do not worship those whom you worship instead of God, but rather I worship God who will cause you to die, for I am commanded to be one of the believers.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "People , if you have doubt about my religion, know that I, certainly, do not worship the idols which you worship instead of God, but I worship God who causes you to die. I am commanded to believe (in His existence),

Verse 105

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], set your face towards religion as a man of pure faith. Do not be one of those who join partners with God;
Yusuf Ali "And further (thus): 'set thy face towards religion with true piety, and never in any wise be of the Unbelievers;
W. Khan And set your face towards the [true] faith in all uprightness, and do not be one of those who ascribe partners to God;
M. Sarwar to have firm belief in the up-right religion and not to be an idolater

Verse 106

Abdel Haleem do not pray to any other [god] that can neither benefit nor harm you: if you do, you will be one of the evildoers.
Yusuf Ali "'Nor call on any, other than Allah;- Such will neither profit thee nor hurt thee: if thou dost, behold! thou shalt certainly be of those who do wrong.'"
W. Khan and do not invoke besides God what can neither help nor harm you. If you do, you will be one of the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar nor to seek help from anyone other than God [who can neither benefit nor harm me], lest I become of the unjust.

Verse 107

Abdel Haleem If God inflicts harm on you, no one can remove it but Him, and if He intends good for you, no one can turn His bounty away; He grants His bounty to any of His servants He will. He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Yusuf Ali If Allah do touch thee with hurt, there is none can remove it but He: if He do design some benefit for thee, there is none can keep back His favour: He causeth it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleaseth. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan If God inflicts harm on you, no one can remove it but He, and if He intends good for you, no one can withhold His bounty; He grants His bounty to any of His servants whom He will. He is the Most Forgiving, and the Most Merciful.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), if God afflicts you with hardship, no one besides Him can save you. If God grants you a favor, no one can prevent you from receiving His favors. God bestows His favors upon whichever of His servants He wants. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Verse 108

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘People, the Truth has come to you from your Lord. Whoever follows the right path follows it for his own good, and whoever strays does so to his own loss: I am not your guardian.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O ye men! Now Truth hath reached you from your Lord! those who receive guidance, do so for the good of their own souls; those who stray, do so to their own loss: and I am not (set) over you to arrange your affairs."
W. Khan Say, ‘Mankind, Truth has come to you from your Lord! Anyone who accepts guidance is guided only for his own sake; and he who goes astray does so at his own peril. I am not appointed as your keeper.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "People, truth has certainly come to you from your Lord. One who seeks guidance does so for his own good and One who goes astray will find himself lost. I am not your keeper".

Verse 109

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], follow what is being revealed to you, and be steadfast until God gives His judgement, for He is the Best of Judges.
Yusuf Ali Follow thou the inspiration sent unto thee, and be patient and constant, till Allah do decide: for He is the best to decide.
W. Khan Follow what is revealed to you, [O Prophet], and be steadfast until God gives His judgement. He is the Best of Judges.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), follow what is revealed to you and have patience until God issues His Judgment; He is the best Judge.
