Chapter 103: al-ʿAṣr (@AlESr@) — Entropy

Illa allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati watawasaw bilhaqqiwatawasaw bissabr

  1. وَالْعَصْرِ
  2. إِنَّ الإِنسَـنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ
  3. إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّـلِحَـتِ وَتَوَاصَوْاْ بِالْحَقّ وَتَوَاصَوْاْ بِالصَّبْرِ

By the declining day, surely humanity is at loss, except those who have believed, have done good deeds, have advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

Entropy

As time slips, Humanity falls behind, Unless we secure, do the right thing, And advise each other to the truth and to fortitude.

Ayn-Sad-Ra = to press/squeeze/wring, withdraw a thing from. i'sar - whirlwind, violent wind heavy rain, hurricane. mu'sirat - clouds emitting rain, rain clouds. asr - age, time, afternoon, history, succession of ages, evening, century, epoch, time that is measurable, consisting of a succession of periods, in distinction from dahr (Dal-ha-Ra) which signifies unlimited time without beginning or end. asran - night and the day, morning and evening.

Abdel Haleem By the declining day,
Y. Emerick The passage of time is a witness
Yusuf Ali By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Umm Muhammad By time,
W. Khan I swear by the passage of time,
M. Sarwar By the time (of the advent of Islam),

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem man is [deep] in loss,
Y. Emerick Humanity is in a constant state of failure
Yusuf Ali Verily Man is in loss,
Umm Muhammad Indeed, mankind is in loss,
W. Khan that man is surely in a state of loss,
M. Sarwar the human being is doomed to suffer loss,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem except for those who believe, do good deeds, urge one another to the truth, and urge one another to steadfastness.
Y. Emerick All except those who believe and do what's morally right and who teach each other to be truthful and persevering.
Yusuf Ali Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.
Umm Muhammad Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
W. Khan except for those who believe and do good deeds and exhort one another to hold fast to the Truth, and who exhort one another to steadfastness.
M. Sarwar except the righteously striving believers who exhort each other to truthful purposes and to patience.
