The Qurʾān

Chapter 11

114. Establish Salah at both ends of the day, and in the early hours of the night. Surely, good deeds erase bad deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful. (Muhammad Taqi Usmani)

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Alif Lam Ra [This is] a Scripture whose verses are perfected, then set out clearly, from One who is all wise, all aware.
Yusuf Ali A. L. R. (This is) a Book, with verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning), further explained in detail,- from One Who is Wise and Well-acquainted (with all things):
W. Khan Alif Lam Ra [This is] a Book, with verses which are fundamental [in nature], and then expounded in detail by One who is all wise and all aware.
M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Ra . This is a Book from One who is All-wise and All-aware. Its verses are well composed and distinctly arranged (from one another)

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem [Say, Prophet], ‘Worship no one but God. I am sent to you from Him to warn and to give good news.
Yusuf Ali (It teacheth) that ye should worship none but Allah. (Say): "Verily I am (sent) unto you from Him to warn and to bring glad tidings:
W. Khan [It teaches] that you should worship none but God. I am sent to you from Him to warn you and to give you good tidings.
M. Sarwar (It teaches), "People, do not worship anyone besides God. I, (Muhammad), am His Messenger sent to warn you and to give you the glad news.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem Ask your Lord for forgiveness, then turn back to Him. He will grant you wholesome enjoyment until an appointed time, and give His grace to everyone who has merit. But if you turn away, I fear you will have torment on a terrible Day:
Yusuf Ali "(And to preach thus), 'Seek ye the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance; that He may grant you enjoyment, good (and true), for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace on all who abound in merit! But if ye turn away, then I fear for you the penalty of a great day:
W. Khan Seek forgiveness from your Lord; then turn towards Him [in repentance]. He will make generous provision for you for an appointed term and will bestow His grace on all who merit it! But if you turn away, then I fear for you the torment of a dreadful Day:
M. Sarwar "Seek forgiveness from your Lord and turn to Him in repentance for your sins. He will provide you good sustenance for an appointed time and will reward everyone according to his merits. I am afraid that you will suffer torment on the great Day (of Judgment) if you turn away (from God).

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem it is to God that you will all return, and He has power over everything.’
Yusuf Ali 'To Allah is your return, and He hath power over all things.'"
W. Khan to God you shall all return; and He has power over all things.
M. Sarwar To God you will all return. God has power over all things."

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem See how they [the disbelievers] wrap themselves up, to hide their feelings from Him. But even when they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they conceal and what they reveal: He knows well the innermost secrets of the heart.
Yusuf Ali Behold! they fold up their hearts, that they may lie hid from Him! Ah even when they cover themselves with their garments, He knoweth what they conceal, and what they reveal: for He knoweth well the (inmost secrets) of the hearts.
W. Khan See how they cover themselves up to hide [their thoughts] from Him. But when they cover themselves up with their garments, He knows what they hide and what they reveal. He knows their innermost thoughts.
M. Sarwar (The unbelievers) cover their breasts to try to hide their disbelief from God. But He knows very well whatever they conceal or reveal even when they cover themselves with their garments. God certainly knows the inner-most (secrets) of the hearts.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem There is not a creature that moves on earth whose provision is not His concern. He knows where it lives and its [final] resting place: it is all [there] in a clear record.
Yusuf Ali There is no moving creature on earth but its sustenance dependeth on Allah: He knoweth the time and place of its definite abode and its temporary deposit: All is in a clear Record.
W. Khan There is not a living creature on the earth but it is for God to provide its sustenance. He knows its dwelling and its [final] resting place. All this is recorded in a clear book.
M. Sarwar There is no living creature on earth that does not receive sustenance from God. He knows its dwelling and resting place. Everything is recorded in the glorious Book.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six Days––His rule extends over the waters too––so as to test which of you does best. Yet [Prophet], if you say to them, ‘You will be resurrected after death,’ the disbelievers are sure to answer, ‘This is clearly nothing but sorcery.’
Yusuf Ali He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days - and His Throne was over the waters - that He might try you, which of you is best in conduct. But if thou wert to say to them, "Ye shall indeed be raised up after death", the Unbelievers would be sure to say, "This is nothing but obvious sorcery!"
W. Khan Enthroned above the waters, it was He who created the heavens and the earth in six Days [periods], in order to test which of you is best in conduct. If you say, ‘You will [all] be raised up after death,’ those who deny the truth will say, ‘This is just sheer sorcery!’
M. Sarwar God created the heavens and the earth in six days. His Throne existed on water so that He could test you and find out those among you who do good deeds. (Muhammad), if you were to tell them that after death they would be brought back to life again, the unbelievers would say, "This is nothing but obvious magic."

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem If We defer their punishment for a determined time, they are sure to say, ‘What is holding it back?’ But on the Day it comes upon them, nothing will divert it from them; what they mocked will be all around them.
Yusuf Ali If We delay the penalty for them for a definite term, they are sure to say, "What keeps it back?" Ah! On the day it (actually) reaches them, nothing will turn it away from them, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!
W. Khan If We defer their punishment till an appointed time, they ask, ‘What is holding it back?’ On the Day when it overtakes them, there will be nothing to avert it from them; and what they used to mock at shall encompass them.
M. Sarwar If We delay in afflicting them with Our punishment for an appointed time, they ask, "What is preventing it (the punishment) from taking place?" On the day when it (punishment) befalls them, no one will be able to escape from it and that which they have mocked will surround them from all sides.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem How desperate and ungrateful man becomes when We let him taste Our mercy and then withhold it!
Yusuf Ali If We give man a taste of Mercy from Ourselves, and then withdraw it from him, behold! he is in despair and (falls into) blasphemy.
W. Khan When We bestow upon man a measure of Our grace and then take it away from him, he yields to despair and becomes ungrateful.
M. Sarwar We grant a favor to the human being and then take it away from him. He becomes despairing and ungrateful.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem And if We let him taste mercy after some harm has touched him, he is sure to say, ‘Misfortune has gone away from me.’ He becomes exultant and boastful.
Yusuf Ali But if We give him a taste of (Our) favours after adversity hath touched him, he is sure to say, "All evil has departed from me:" Behold! he falls into exultation and pride.
W. Khan And if, after adversity, We let him taste good fortune he says, ‘All my ills are gone.’ He becomes exultant and boastful.
M. Sarwar If after his hardship, We grant him a blessing, he grows proud and rejoicing and says, "All my hardships have gone".

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem Not so those who are steadfast and do good deeds: they will have forgiveness and a great reward.
Yusuf Ali Not so do those who show patience and constancy, and work righteousness; for them is forgiveness (of sins) and a great reward.
W. Khan Not so those who are patient and do good deeds. They shall have forgiveness and a great reward.
M. Sarwar But those who exercise patience and do good works do not behave as such. They will receive forgiveness and a great reward (from the Lord).

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem So [Prophet] are you going to abandon some part of what is revealed to you, and let your heart be oppressed by it, because they say, ‘Why is no treasure sent down to him? Why has no angel come with him?’? You are only there to warn; it is God who is in charge of everything.
Yusuf Ali Perchance thou mayest (feel the inclination) to give up a part of what is revealed unto thee, and thy heart feeleth straitened lest they say, "Why is not a treasure sent down unto him, or why does not an angel come down with him?" But thou art there only to warn! It is Allah that arrangeth all affairs!
W. Khan You may [feel the inclination] to leave aside a part of what is revealed to you and you may be distressed because they say, ‘Why has no treasure been sent down to him, why has no angel come with him?’ But you are only to give warning. God is the guardian of all things.
M. Sarwar Perhaps you, (Muhammad), may by chance leave (untold) a part of that which is revealed to you and feel grieved because they say, "Why has some treasure not been sent to him or an angel sent down with him?" Say, "I have come only to warn you." God is the Guardian of all things.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem If they say, ‘He has invented it himself,’ say, ‘Then produce ten invented suras like it, and call in whoever you can beside God, if you are truthful.’
Yusuf Ali Or they may say, "He forged it," Say, "Bring ye then ten suras forged, like unto it, and call (to your aid) whomsoever ye can, other than Allah!- If ye speak the truth!
W. Khan If they say, ‘He has invented it himself.’ Say, ‘If you are truthful, produce ten invented chapters like it, and call on whom you can besides God, to help you.’
M. Sarwar Do they, (the unbelievers), say that (Muhammad) has falsely ascribed (the Quran) to God? Ask them, "Compose ten chapters like (those of the Quran) and call on whomever you can for help besides God if you are true in your claim.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem If they do not answer you, then you will all know that it is sent down containing knowledge from God, and that there is no god but Him. Then will you submit to Him?
Yusuf Ali "If then they (your false gods) answer not your (call), know ye that this revelation is sent down (replete) with the knowledge of Allah, and that there is no god but He! will ye even then submit (to Islam)?"
W. Khan But if they do not respond to you, then know that this [Quran] is sent down with God’s knowledge and that there is no deity but Him. Will you then surrender yourselves to Him?
M. Sarwar If they will not respond to you, know that God has sent it with His knowledge and that He is the only God. Will you then become Muslims?"

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem If any desire [only] the life of this world with all its finery, We shall repay them in full in this life for their deeds- they will be given no less-
Yusuf Ali Those who desire the life of the present and its glitter,- to them we shall pay (the price of) their deeds therein,- without diminution.
W. Khan Those who desire the life of this world and all its finery shall be repaid in full in this life for their deeds—nothing shall be denied them.
M. Sarwar Those who choose the worldly life and its pleasures will be given proper recompense for their deeds in this life and will not suffer any loss.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem but such people will have nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire: their work here will be fruitless and their deeds futile.
Yusuf Ali They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire: vain are the designs they frame therein, and of no effect and the deeds that they do!
W. Khan These are the people who, in the world to come, shall have nothing but Hellfire and all that they used to do shall be in vain.
M. Sarwar Such people will receive nothing in the next life except Hell fire. Their deeds will be made devoid of all virtue and their efforts will be in vain.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem Can they be compared to those who have clear proof from their Lord, recited by a witness from Him, and before it the Book of Moses, as a guide and mercy? These people believe in it, whereas those groups that deny its truth are promised the Fire. So have no doubt about it [Prophet]: it is the Truth from your Lord, though most people do not believe so.
Yusuf Ali Can they be (like) those who accept a Clear (Sign) from their Lord, and whom a witness from Himself doth teach, as did the Book of Moses before it,- a guide and a mercy? They believe therein; but those of the Sects that reject it,- the Fire will be their promised meeting-place. Be not then in doubt thereon: for it is the truth from thy Lord: yet many among men do not believe!
W. Khan Can they be compared to those who possess a clear proof from their Lord, followed up by a witness from Him, preceded by the Book of Moses, as a guide and a mercy? These people believe in it; whereas those groups that deny its truth are promised the Fire. Therefore, have no doubt about it. It is the truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe it.
M. Sarwar Should they be compared with those whose Lord has given them a guidance which is testified by a witness from among their own people and by the Book of Moses, a guide and a mercy. Such people do believe in this guidance (in the Quran). Those who disbelieve (in the Quran) will have hell as their dwelling place. Thus, (Muhammad), have no doubt about it (the Quran). It is certainly the truth from your Lord, yet many people do not have faith.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Who could do more wrong than someone who invents lies about God? Such people will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, ‘These are the ones that lied about their Lord.’ God’s rejection is the due of those who do such wrong,
Yusuf Ali Who doth more wrong than those who invent a life against Allah? They will be turned back to the presence of their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord! Behold! the Curse of Allah is on those who do wrong!-
W. Khan Who does greater wrong than the one who fabricates a lie against God? Such people shall be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, ‘These are the ones who lied about their Lord.’ Surely God’s rejection is merited by such wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar Who are more unjust than those who ascribe falsehood to God? When such people are brought into the presence of their Lord, the witness will say, "These are the ones who told lies about their Lord. Certainly God will condemn the unjust

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem who hinder others from God’s path, trying to make it crooked, and deny the life to come.
Yusuf Ali "Those who would hinder (men) from the path of Allah and would seek in it something crooked: these were they who denied the Hereafter!"
W. Khan Such as those who turn others away from the path of God and seek to make it appear crooked: these are the ones who deny the Hereafter.
M. Sarwar who prevent others from the way of God, seek to make it appear crooked, and who have no faith in the life hereafter.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem They will not escape on earth, and there will be no one other than God to protect them. Their punishment will be doubled. They could not hear, and they did not see.
Yusuf Ali They will in no wise frustrate (His design) on earth, nor have they protectors besides Allah! Their penalty will be doubled! They lost the power to hear, and they did not see!
W. Khan They can never frustrate God on earth, nor have they any protectors besides God. They will be subjected to double punishment, for they could neither hear nor see.
M. Sarwar Such people will never weaken God's (power) on earth nor will they find any guardian besides God. Their punishment will be doubled and they will not be able to hear or see.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem It is they who will have lost their souls, and what they invented will have deserted them.
Yusuf Ali They are the ones who have lost their own souls: and the (fancies) they invented have left them in the lurch!
W. Khan It is such as these who have ruined their souls, and that which they fabricated shall fail them.
M. Sarwar They have lost their souls and their false deities will turn away from them.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem There is no doubt they will be the ones to lose most in the life to come.
Yusuf Ali Without a doubt, these are the very ones who will lose most in the Hereafter!
W. Khan In the Hereafter, it is they who shall be the greatest losers.
M. Sarwar In the life to come they will certainly lose a great deal.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem But those who believed, did good deeds, and humbled themselves before their Lord will be companions in Paradise and there they will stay.
Yusuf Ali But those who believe and work righteousness, and humble themselves before their Lord,- They will be companions of the gardens, to dwell therein for aye!
W. Khan Those who have believed and done good deeds and humbled themselves before their Lord are destined for Paradise, and they will live in it forever.
M. Sarwar The righteously striving believers who are humble before their Lord, will be the dwellers of Paradise wherein they will live forever.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem These two groups are like the blind and the deaf as compared with those who can see and hear well: can they be alike? How can you not take heed?
Yusuf Ali These two kinds (of men) may be compared to the blind and deaf, and those who can see and hear well. Are they equal when compared? Will ye not then take heed?
W. Khan These two groups are like the blind and the deaf as compared with those who can see and hear. Can the two be equal? Will you not then understand?[21]
M. Sarwar Can the two groups, the blind and the deaf, be considered equal to those who have vision and hearing? Will you then not take heed?

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem We sent Noah to his people to say, ‘I have come to you to give a clear warning:
Yusuf Ali We sent Noah to his people (with a mission): "I have come to you with a Clear Warning:
W. Khan We sent Noah to his people. He said, ‘I have come to you with a clear warning:
M. Sarwar We sent Noah to his people to give them the clear warning

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem worship no one but God. I fear you will have torment on a painful Day.’
Yusuf Ali "That ye serve none but Allah: Verily I do fear for you the penalty of a grievous day."
W. Khan worship none but God. I fear lest punishment befall you on a woeful Day.’
M. Sarwar that they should not worship anyone besides God. (Noah warned them), "I am afraid that you will suffer the most painful torment".

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem But the prominent disbelievers among his people said, ‘We can see that you are nothing but a mortal like ourselves, and it is clear to see that only the vilest among us follow you. We cannot see how you are any better than we are. In fact, we think you are a liar.’
Yusuf Ali But the chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "We see (in) thee nothing but a man like ourselves: Nor do we see that any follow thee but the meanest among us, in judgment immature: Nor do we see in you (all) any merit above us: in fact we thing ye are liars!"
W. Khan The leaders of his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth, said, ‘We regard you only as a human being like ourselves. We do not see that anyone follows you but the lowliest of us, those of immature judgement. We see no superior merit in you; in fact we believe you are a liar.’
M. Sarwar The disbelievers among his people said, "We do not believe that you are any better than the rest of us; we see that only the worthless hasty ones, the lowliest among us follow you. Thus, we do not think that you are superior to us, rather you are all liars."

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My people, think: if I did have a clear sign from my Lord, and He had given me grace of His own, though it was hidden from you, could we force you to accept it against your will?
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my people! See ye if (it be that) I have a Clear Sign from my Lord, and that He hath sent Mercy unto me from His own presence, but that the Mercy hath been obscured from your sight? shall we compel you to accept it when ye are averse to it?
W. Khan He said, ‘O my people, tell me: if I have clear evidence from my Lord and He has favoured me with grace from Himself, which you have been unable to recognize, can we force it on you against your will?
M. Sarwar Noah replied, "My people do you think - that if my Lord has sent me a miracle and granted me mercy but your ignorance has obscured them from your sight - we can force you to believe when you do not want to?

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem My people, I ask no reward for it from you; my reward comes only from God. I will not drive away the faithful: they are sure to meet their Lord. I can see you are foolish.
Yusuf Ali "And O my people! I ask you for no wealth in return: my reward is from none but Allah: But I will not drive away (in contempt) those who believe: for verily they are to meet their Lord, and ye I see are the ignorant ones!
W. Khan O my people, I do not ask you for any money for this; my reward comes only from God. I will not drive away those who believe; they shall surely meet their Lord. Yet I see that you are a people who act out of ignorance.
M. Sarwar My people I do not ask any payment for what I preach to you. No one except God has to give me any reward. I do not drive away those who have faith (in my teaching); they will all receive mercy from their Lord. I know that you are ignorant people.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem My people, who could help me against God if I drove the faithful away? Will you not take heed?
Yusuf Ali "And O my people! who would help me against Allah if I drove them away? Will ye not then take heed?
W. Khan My people, who would support me against God if I were to drive them off ? Will you not take heed?
M. Sarwar My people, who would protect me against God if I were to drive these people away? Will you then not take heed?

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem I am not telling you that I hold God’s treasures, or have any knowledge of what is hidden, or that I am an angel. Nor do I say that God will not grant any good to those who are despised in your eyes: God Himself knows best what is in their souls. If I did this I would be one of the wrongdoers.’
Yusuf Ali "I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor do I know what is hidden, nor claim I to be an angel. Nor yet do I say, of those whom your eyes do despise that Allah will not grant them (all) that is good: Allah knoweth best what is in their souls: I should, if I did, indeed be a wrong-doer."
W. Khan I do not say to you that I possess God’s treasures, or that I have knowledge of the unseen, or that I am an angel. Nor do I say concerning those upon whom you look with contempt, that God will not bestow any good upon them—God knows best what is in their hearts. If I did, I would certainly be one of the wrongdoers.’
M. Sarwar I do not say that God's treasures belong to me, that I know the unseen, or that I am an angel. Nor do I say about those whom you disdain that God will not give them any reward. God knows best what is in their hearts, for then I would be unjust."

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Noah! You have argued with us for too long. Bring down on us the punishment you threaten us with, if you are telling the truth.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "O Noah! thou hast disputed with us, and (much) hast thou prolonged the dispute with us: now bring upon us what thou threatenest us with, if thou speakest the truth!?"
W. Khan ‘Noah,’ they replied, ‘you have argued with us, and argued to excess. Now bring down upon us what you threaten us with, if you speak the truth!?’
M. Sarwar They said, "Noah, you have argued with us a great deal. Bring down on us whatever torment with which you have been threatening us if what you say is true".

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘It is God who will bring it down, if He wishes, and you will not be able to escape.
Yusuf Ali He said: "Truly, Allah will bring it on you if He wills,- and then, ye will not be able to frustrate it!
W. Khan He said, ‘It is God who will bring it down upon you, if He wishes, and you will not be able to escape.
M. Sarwar (Noah) replied, "God will bring torment down on you whenever He wants and you will not be able to make His (plans) fail.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem My advice will be no use to you if God wishes to leave you to your delusions: He is your Lord and to Him you will be returned.’
Yusuf Ali "Of no profit will be my counsel to you, much as I desire to give you (good) counsel, if it be that Allah willeth to leave you astray: He is your Lord! and to Him will ye return!"
W. Khan My advice will not benefit you, no matter how sincerely I want to advise you, if God lets you go astray. He is your Lord and you will all return to Him.’
M. Sarwar My advice will be of no benefit to you if God wants to let you go astray. He is your Lord and to Him you will all return."

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem If [these disbelievers] say, ‘He has made this up,’ say [Muhammad], ‘If I have made this up, I am responsible for my own crime, but I am innocent of the crimes you commit.’
Yusuf Ali Or do they say, "He has forged it"? Say: "If I had forged it, on me were my sin! and I am free of the sins of which ye are guilty!
W. Khan If they say, ‘He has invented it himself,’ say to them, ‘If I have indeed invented this myself, then may I be punished for my sin; I am innocent of the crimes that you commit.’
M. Sarwar Do they say that Muhammad has falsely ascribed (the Quran) to God? (Muhammad), tell them "Had I falsely ascribed it to God, I shall be responsible for my own sins. I am certainly not responsible for whatever sins you commit!

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem It was revealed to Noah, ‘None of your people will believe, other than those who have already done so, so do not be distressed by, what they do.
Yusuf Ali It was revealed to Noah: "None of thy people will believe except those who have believed already! So grieve no longer over their (evil) deeds.
W. Khan God’s will was revealed to Noah, ‘No more of your people will believe in you than those who already believe; do not grieve, therefore, over what they have been doing.
M. Sarwar It was revealed to Noah that besides those who had already accepted his faith, no one from his people would ever believe him. He was told not to be disappointed about what his people had done,

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Build the Ark under Our [watchful] eyes and with Our inspiration. Do not plead with Me for those who have done evil- they will be drowned.’
Yusuf Ali "But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the Flood)."
W. Khan Build the Ark under Our eyes and in accordance with Our revelation. Do not plead with Me concerning the evil-doers. They shall certainly be drowned.’
M. Sarwar but to build the Ark under the supervision and guidance of his Lord. He was also told not to address any words to Him concerning the unjust for they were all to be drowned.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem So he began to build the Ark, and whenever leaders of his people passed by, they laughed at him. He said, ‘You may scorn us now, but we will come to scorn you:
Yusuf Ali Forthwith he (starts) constructing the Ark: Every time that the chiefs of his people passed by him, they threw ridicule on him. He said: "If ye ridicule us now, we (in our turn) can look down on you with ridicule likewise!
W. Khan So he began to build the Ark, and whenever leaders of his people passed by, they scoffed at him. He said, ‘If you are scoffing at us, we shall scoff at you [and your ignorance], just as you scoff at us:
M. Sarwar (Noah) started to build the Ark but whenever some of his people passed by, they would mock him. He in return would reply, "Mock us, but just as you mock us, we, too, will mock you.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem you will find out who will receive a humiliating punishment, and on whom a lasting suffering will descend.’
Yusuf Ali "But soon will ye know who it is on whom will descend a penalty that will cover them with shame,- on whom will be unloosed a penalty lasting:"
W. Khan you will soon come to know who will receive a humiliating punishment, and find unleashed against him an everlasting punishment.’
M. Sarwar You will soon learn who will face a humiliating punishment and will be encompassed by an everlasting torment."

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem When Our command came, and water gushed up out of the earth, We said, ‘Place on board this Ark a pair of each species, and your own family- except those against whom the sentence has already been passed- and those who have believed,’ though only a few believed with him.
Yusuf Ali At length, behold! there came Our command, and the fountains of the earth gushed forth! We said: "Embark therein, of each kind two, male and female, and your family - except those against whom the word has already gone forth,- and the Believers." but only a few believed with him.
W. Khan When Our command came, and water gushed forth in torrents, We said to Noah, ‘Take into the Ark a pair from every species, and your own family— except those on whom the sentence has already been passed, and all the true believers.’ But only a few believed along with him.
M. Sarwar When at last Our decree was fulfilled, water gushed forth from the Oven (in Noah's house). We told him to carry in the Ark a pair (male and female) from every species, his family - except those who were destined to perish - and the believers. No one believed in him, except a few.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘Board the Ark. In the name of God it shall sail and anchor. My God is most forgiving and merciful.’
Yusuf Ali So he said: "Embark ye on the Ark, In the name of Allah, whether it move or be at rest! For my Lord is, be sure, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!"
W. Khan Noah said, ‘Embark on it. In the name of God, it shall set sail and cast anchor. Truly, my Lord is forgiving and merciful.’
M. Sarwar (Noah) said, "Embark in it. It will sail in the name of God, in His Name it will sail and in His Name it will cast anchor. My Lord is All-forgiving and All-merciful".

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem It sailed with them on waves like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who stayed behind, ‘Come aboard with us, my son, do not stay with the disbelievers.’
Yusuf Ali So the Ark floated with them on the waves (towering) like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who had separated himself (from the rest): "O my son! embark with us, and be not with the unbelievers!"
W. Khan The Ark sailed along with them through mountainous waves. Noah called out to his son who stood apart, ‘O my son! Embark with us and do not be among the deniers!’
M. Sarwar When the Ark sailed on with them amid the mountainous waves, Noah called out to his son who kept away from them, "My son, embark with us. Do not stay with the unbelievers."

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem But he replied, ‘I will seek refuge on a mountain to save me from the water.’ Noah said, ‘Today there is no refuge from God’s command, except for those on whom He has mercy.’ The waves cut them off from each other and he was among the drowned.

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem He answered, ‘My people, can you not see? What if I am acting on clear evidence from my Lord? He Himself has given me good provision: I do not want to do what I am forbidding you to do, I only want to put things right as far as I can. I cannot succeed without God’s help: I trust in Him, and always turn to Him.
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my people! see ye whether I have a Clear (Sign) from my Lord, and He hath given me sustenance (pure and) good as from Himself? I wish not, in opposition to you, to do that which I forbid you to do. I only desire (your) betterment to the best of my power; and my success (in my task) can only come from Allah. In Him I trust, and unto Him I look.
W. Khan [Shu‘ayb] said, ‘O my people! What do you think? If I have clear evidence from my Lord, and He has sustained me with fair sustenance from Himself [should I not guide you?]. I have no desire to do, out of opposition to you, what I am asking you not to do. I only want to reform you as far as I can. Nor can I succeed without God’s help. In Him I have put my trust and to Him I turn.
M. Sarwar He said, "My people, do you not realize that I have received authoritative evidence from my Lord and have been granted a noble gift from Him? I do not want to oppose or ignore what I have prohibited you not to do. I only intend to reform you as much as I can. My success is in the hands of God. I trust Him and turn to Him in repentance.

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem My people, do not let your opposition to me bring upon you a similar fate to the peoples of Noah or Hud or Salih; the people of Lot are not far away from you.
Yusuf Ali "And O my people! let not my dissent (from you) cause you to sin, lest ye suffer a fate similar to that of the people of Noah or of Hud or of Salih, nor are the people of Lut far off from you!
W. Khan O my people, do not let your opposition to me bring upon you a fate similar to the peoples of Noah or Hud or Salih; nor is it long since the people of Lot were punished!
M. Sarwar My people, do not let your opposition to me lead you to commit sins or make you suffer what the people of Noah, Hud, and Salih suffered. Remember that the people of Lot were destroyed not very long ago.

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem Ask forgiveness from your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance: my Lord is merciful and most loving.’
Yusuf Ali "But ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn unto Him (in repentance): For my Lord is indeed full of mercy and loving-kindness."
W. Khan Seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance. For my Lord is indeed merciful and loving.’
M. Sarwar Seek forgiveness from your Lord and turn to Him in repentance. My Lord is certainly All-merciful and Loving."

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Shuayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and we find you very weak in our midst. But for your family, we would have stoned you, for you have no great status among us.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "O Shu'aib! much of what thou sayest we do not understand! In fact among us we see that thou hast no strength! Were it not for thy family, we should certainly have stoned thee! for thou hast among us no great position!"
W. Khan They replied, ‘Shu‘ayb, we do not understand much of what you say. In fact, we see that you are powerless among us.Were it not for your clan, we would have stoned you,for you are not strong against us.’
M. Sarwar They said, "Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you say, but we know that you are weak among us. Had it not been for our respect of your tribe, we would have stoned you to death; you are not very dear to us".

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My people, is my family stronger in your estimation than God? And have you put Him behind you? My Lord surrounds everything you do.
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my people! is then my family of more consideration with you than Allah? For ye cast Him away behind your backs (with contempt). But verily my Lord encompasseth on all sides all that ye do!
W. Khan He said, ‘My people, is my tribe mightier to you than God? You put Him behind you, turning your backs on Him! Surely, my Lord encompasses all that you do.
M. Sarwar He asked them, "My people, is my tribe more respectable to you than God whom you have completely ignored? My Lord certainly has full control over your deeds.

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem My people, do whatever is within your power, and I will do likewise. Soon you will know who will receive a disgraceful punishment and who is a liar. Watch out, and so will I.’
Yusuf Ali "And O my people! Do whatever ye can: I will do (my part): Soon will ye know who it is on whom descends the penalty of ignominy; and who is a liar! and watch ye! for I too am watching with you!"
W. Khan My people, do what you will and so shall I. You will certainly come to know who will receive a punishment to disgrace him, and who is a liar. Wait on; I shall wait on with you.’
M. Sarwar My people, do as you wish and I will do (as I believe). You will soon know who will suffer a humiliating torment and who was the one telling lies. Wait and I too will be waiting with you."

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem When what We had ordained came about, in Our mercy We saved Shuayb and his fellow believers, but a mighty blast struck the wrongdoers. By morning they lay dead in their homes,
Yusuf Ali When Our decree issued, We saved Shu'aib and those who believed with him, by (special) mercy from Ourselves: But the (mighty) blast did seize the wrong-doers, and they lay prostrate in their homes by the morning,-
W. Khan When Our command came, We saved Shu‘ayb and those who believed with him as a mercy from Ourself, while the blast overtook the wrongdoers, so that they lay dead in their homes,
M. Sarwar When Our decree came to pass, We mercifully saved Shu'ayb and his faithful followers. A blast struck the unjust and left them in their homes, lying motionless on their faces,

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem as if they had never lived and flourished there. Yes, away with the people of Midian, just like the Thamud!
Yusuf Ali As if they had never dwelt and flourished there! Ah! Behold! How the Madyan were removed (from sight) as were removed the Thamud!
W. Khan as though they had never dwelt therein. Oh, away with the people of Midian, just as happened with the Thamud!
M. Sarwar as though they had never existed. How far from (the mercy of God) had the people of Midian gone, just as those of Thamud?

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem We also sent Moses, with Our signs and clear authority,
Yusuf Ali And we sent Moses, with Our Clear (Signs) and an authority manifest,
W. Khan We sent forth Moses with Our signs and with manifest authority,
M. Sarwar We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and a clear authority.

Verse 97

Abdel Haleem to Pharaoh and his supporters, but they followed Pharaoh’s orders, and Pharaoh’s orders were misguided.
Yusuf Ali Unto Pharaoh and his chiefs: but they followed the command of Pharaoh and the command of Pharaoh was no right (guide).
W. Khan to Pharaoh and his nobles. But they followed the command of Pharaoh and the command of Pharaoh was not rightly directed.
M. Sarwar They followed the order of the Pharaoh but Pharaoh's orders were evil.

Verse 98

Abdel Haleem He will be at the forefront of his people on the Day of Resurrection, leading them down towards the Fire. What a foul drinking place to be led to!
Yusuf Ali He will go before his people on the Day of Judgment, and lead them into the Fire (as cattle are led to water): But woeful indeed will be the place to which they are led!
W. Khan He shall stand at the head of his people on the Day of Resurrection, and shall lead them into the Fire. Evil is the place to which they shall be led.
M. Sarwar On the Day of Judgment he will lead his people down into the hell fire. His leadership is evil and terrible is the place to which he leads!

Verse 99

Abdel Haleem They were pursued by God’s rejection in this life and will be on the Day of Resurrection, too. What a foul gift to be given!
Yusuf Ali And they are followed by a curse in this (life) and on the Day of Judgment: and woeful is the gift which shall be given (unto them)!
W. Khan A curse followed them in this world, and shall follow them on the Day of Resurrection. What a foul gift to be given!
M. Sarwar They are condemned in this world and in the life to come. Evil is the gift and the recipient!

Verse 100

Abdel Haleem We relate to you [Muhammad] such accounts of earlier towns: some of them are still standing; some have been mown down;
Yusuf Ali These are some of the stories of communities which We relate unto thee: of them some are standing, and some have been mown down (by the sickle of time).
W. Khan We relate to you such accounts of earlier towns: some of them are still standing; while others have ceased to exist;
M. Sarwar Such were the stories of the nations of the past which We tell to you, (Muhammad). Some of them were destroyed and some of them have survived.

Verse 101

Abdel Haleem We did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. Their gods, which they called on beside God, were no use to them when what your Lord had ordained came about; they only increased their ruin.
Yusuf Ali It was not We that wronged them: They wronged their own souls: the deities, other than Allah, whom they invoked, profited them no whit when there issued the decree of thy Lord: Nor did they add aught (to their lot) but perdition!
W. Khan We did not wrong them; they wronged themselves; the deities they called on besides God availed them nothing: when God’s command came upon them, they only added to their ruin.
M. Sarwar We were not unjust to them but they were unjust to themselves. The idols which they worshipped instead of God were of no help to them when Our decree came to pass. The idols only brought about their destruction.

Verse 102

Abdel Haleem Such is the punishment of your Lord for towns in the midst of their sins: His punishment is terrible and severe.
Yusuf Ali Such is the chastisement of thy Lord when He chastises communities in the midst of their wrong: grievous, indeed, and severe is His chastisement.
W. Khan Such is the punishment of your Lord when He seizes the towns in the midst of their sins: His punishing grip is terrible and severe.
M. Sarwar Thus was the punishment of your Lord when He punished the unjust people of the towns. The punishment of your Lord is certainly severe.

Verse 103

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this for anyone who fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day in which all people will be gathered together, a Day for all to see.
Yusuf Ali In that is a Sign for those who fear the penalty of the Hereafter: that is a Day for which mankind will be gathered together: that will be a Day of Testimony.
W. Khan In that is a sign for him who fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which mankind shall be gathered together, a Day when all will be present.
M. Sarwar In this there is, certainly, a lesson for those who fear the torment of the next life in which all people will be gathered together

Verse 104

Abdel Haleem We are delaying it only for a specified period,
Yusuf Ali Nor shall We delay it but for a term appointed.
W. Khan We will only postpone it until a predetermined time,
M. Sarwar during a single day. We have deferred this day for an appointed time.

Verse 105

Abdel Haleem and when that Day comes, no soul will speak except by His permission, and some of them will be wretched and some happy.
Yusuf Ali The day it arrives, no soul shall speak except by His leave: of those (gathered) some will be wretched and some will be blessed.
W. Khan and when that Day arrives, no soul shall speak but by His leave. Among those some shall be damned, and others shall be blessed.
M. Sarwar On the Day of Judgment no one will speak without the permission of God. Some will be condemned and others blessed.

Verse 106

Abdel Haleem The wretched ones will be in the Fire, sighing and groaning,
Yusuf Ali Those who are wretched shall be in the Fire: There will be for them therein (nothing but) the heaving of sighs and sobs:
W. Khan The wretched ones will be in the Fire sighing and groaning,
M. Sarwar The condemned ones will live in hell fire, sighing and groaning

Verse 107

Abdel Haleem there to remain for as long as the heavens and earth endure, unless your Lord wills otherwise: your Lord carries out whatever He wills.
Yusuf Ali They will dwell therein for all the time that the heavens and the earth endure, except as thy Lord willeth: for thy Lord is the (sure) accomplisher of what He planneth.
W. Khan remaining in it timelessly, for ever, as long as the heavens and earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Your Lord carries out whatever He wills.
M. Sarwar for as long as the heavens and the earth exist, unless your Lord decides otherwise. Your Lord will certainly accomplish whatever He wants.

Verse 108

Abdel Haleem As for those who have been blessed, they will be in Paradise, there to remain as long as the heavens and earth endure, unless your Lord wills otherwise- an unceasing gift.
Yusuf Ali And those who are blessed shall be in the Garden: They will dwell therein for all the time that the heavens and the earth endure, except as thy Lord willeth: a gift without break.
W. Khan Those who are blessed shall abide in the Garden; they will dwell therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Such bounty shall be unending.
M. Sarwar The blessed ones will live in Paradise as long as the heavens and the earth exist, unless your Lord decides to grant endless rewards to whomever He wants.

Verse 109

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], have no doubt about what these people worship: it is merely what their fathers worshipped before them, and We shall certainly give them their share in full, without any reduction.
Yusuf Ali Be not then in doubt as to what these men worship. They worship nothing but what their fathers worshipped before (them): but verily We shall pay them back (in full) their portion without (the least) abatement.
W. Khan Have no doubt as to what they worship. They worship nothing but what their fathers worshipped before [them]. We shall certainly give them their share in full, without diminishing anything.
M. Sarwar Have no doubt that these people worship (idols). They worship what their fathers had worshipped before them. We will give them the exact recompense that they deserve.

Verse 110

Abdel Haleem We gave Moses the Scripture before you, but differences arose about it and if it had not been for a prior word from your Lord, a decision would already have been made between them, though they are in grave doubt about it.
Yusuf Ali We certainly gave the Book to Moses, but differences arose therein: had it not been that a word had gone forth before from thy Lord, the matter would have been decided between them, but they are in suspicious doubt concerning it.
W. Khan We certainly gave the Book to Moses, but differences arose about it: had it not been that a word had gone forth before from your Lord, Judgement would indeed have been passed on them then and there: yet they are in grave doubt about it.
M. Sarwar We gave the Book to Moses but people had different views about it. Had the Word of your Lord not been already ordained, He would have settled their differences (there and then). They are still in doubt about this.

Verse 111

Abdel Haleem Your Lord will give everyone full due for whatever they have done: He is aware of everything they do.
Yusuf Ali And, of a surety, to all will your Lord pay back (in full the recompense) of their deeds: for He knoweth well all that they do.
W. Khan Your Lord will reward each one of them in full for their deeds. He is well-aware of all their actions.
M. Sarwar God will certainly recompense everyone according to their deeds; He knows well all that you do.

Verse 112

Abdel Haleem So keep to the right course as you have been commanded, together with those who have turned to God with you. Do not overstep the limits, for He sees everything you do.
Yusuf Ali Therefore stand firm (in the straight Path) as thou art commanded,- thou and those who with thee turn (unto Allah); and transgress not (from the Path): for He seeth well all that ye do.
W. Khan Therefore stand firm [in the straight path] as you are commanded, along with those who have turned to God with you, and do not exceed the bounds, for He sees everything you do.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), be steadfast (in your faith) just as you have been commanded. Those who have turned to God in repentance with you, should also be steadfast in their faith. Do not indulge in rebellion. God is certainly aware of what you do.

Verse 113

Abdel Haleem Do not rely on those who do evil, or the Fire may touch you, and then you will have no one to protect you from God, nor will you be helped.
Yusuf Ali And incline not to those who do wrong, or the Fire will seize you; and ye have no protectors other than Allah, nor shall ye be helped.
W. Khan Do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire touch you. For [then] you would have none to protect you from God, and you will not be helped.
M. Sarwar Do not be inclined towards the unjust ones lest you will be afflicted by the hell fire. Besides God, no one can be your protector nor will anyone be able to help you.

Verse 114

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], keep up the prayer at both ends of the day, and during parts of the night, for good things drive bad away- this is a reminder for those who are aware.
Yusuf Ali And establish regular prayers at the two ends of the day and at the approaches of the night: For those things, that are good remove those that are evil: Be that the word of remembrance to those who remember (their Lord):
W. Khan Say your prayers morning and evening, and during parts of the night; surely good makes amends for evil. This is a reminder for people who pay heed.
M. Sarwar Say your prayers in the morning, the last portion of the day, and at the beginning of the night. Good deeds do away with the bad deeds. This is a reminder for those who take heed.

Verse 115

Abdel Haleem Be steadfast: God does not let the rewards of those who do good go to waste.
Yusuf Ali And be steadfast in patience; for verily Allah will not suffer the reward of the righteous to perish.
W. Khan Be steadfast; for surely, God does not let the wages of the righteous be wasted.
M. Sarwar Exercise patience; God does not ignore the reward of those who do good.

Verse 116

Abdel Haleem If only there had been, among the generations before your time, people with a rem-nant of good sense, to forbid corruption on the earth! We saved only a few of them, while the unjust pursued the enjoyment of plenty, and persisted in sin.
Yusuf Ali Why were there not, among the generations before you, persons possessed of balanced good sense, prohibiting (men) from mischief in the earth - except a few among them whom We saved (from harm)? But the wrong-doers pursued the enjoyment of the good things of life which were given them, and persisted in sin.
W. Khan Why, then, were there not among the generations before you upright men who would speak out against the [spread of] corruption on earth—except for the few whom We saved? But the wrongdoers pursued their worldly pleasures and thus became guilty.
M. Sarwar Why were there no people of understanding among those people of the destroyed towns of the past except for a few, whom we saved from destruction, to prevent people from committing evil in the land? The unjust among them indulged in worldly pleasures and so became guilty.

Verse 117

Abdel Haleem Your Lord would not destroy any town without cause if its people were acting righteously.
Yusuf Ali Nor would thy Lord be the One to destroy communities for a single wrong-doing, if its members were likely to mend.
W. Khan Your Lord would never unjustly destroy communities while their people were trying to reform.
M. Sarwar Your Lord would not have destroyed those people (of the towns) for their injustice if they had tried to reform themselves.

Verse 118

Abdel Haleem If your Lord had pleased, He would have made all people a single community, but they continue to have their differences-
Yusuf Ali If thy Lord had so willed, He could have made mankind one people: but they will not cease to dispute.
W. Khan If your Lord had wished, He would have made mankind into one community. As it is, they will not cease to dispute,—
M. Sarwar Had your Lord wanted, He would have made all people one united nation. They still have different beliefs

Verse 119

Abdel Haleem except those on whom your Lord has mercy- for He created them to be this way, and the word of your Lord is final: ‘I shall definitely fill Hell with both jinn and men.’
Yusuf Ali Except those on whom thy Lord hath bestowed His Mercy: and for this did He create them: and the Word of thy Lord shall be fulfilled: "I will fill Hell with jinns and men all together."
W. Khan and to this end He has created them [all], except for those to whom your Lord has shown mercy. The word of your Lord shall be fulfilled, ‘I will fill Hell with jinn and men all together.’
M. Sarwar except those upon whom God has granted His mercy. God has created them to receive mercy. The decree of your Lord that He will fill hell with both jinn and human beings has already been ordained.

Verse 120

Abdel Haleem So [Muhammad], We have told you the stories of the prophets to make your heart firm and in these accounts truth has come to you, as well as lessons and reminders for the believers.
Yusuf Ali All that we relate to thee of the stories of the messengers,- with it We make firm thy heart: in them there cometh to thee the Truth, as well as an exhortation and a message of remembrance to those who believe.
W. Khan We have told you the stories of the prophets to make your heart firm and in these accounts truth has come to you, with an exhortation and a reminder for the believers.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), We tell you all the stories of the Messengers which will strengthen your heart. In the Quran We have revealed the Truth to you with good advice and reminders for the faithful ones.

Verse 121

Abdel Haleem Say to those who do not believe, ‘Do whatever you can: we too are doing what we can,’
Yusuf Ali Say to those who do not believe: "Do what ever ye can: We shall do our part;
W. Khan Say to those who do not believe, you do things in your way and we are doing things in our way,
M. Sarwar Tell the unbelievers, "Do as you wish and I will do as I believe.

Verse 122

Abdel Haleem and ‘Wait: we too are waiting.’
Yusuf Ali "And wait ye! We too shall wait."
W. Khan and wait, we too are waiting.’
M. Sarwar Wait, and I, too, will be waiting with you."

Verse 123

Abdel Haleem All that is hidden in the heavens and earth belongs to God, and all authority goes back to Him. So [Prophet], worship Him, and put your trust in Him: your Lord is never unaware of what you [people] are doing.
Yusuf Ali To Allah do belong the unseen (secrets) of the heavens and the earth, and to Him goeth back every affair (for decision): then worship Him, and put thy trust in Him: and thy Lord is not unmindful of aught that ye do.
W. Khan The knowledge of the secret of the heavens and the earth belongs to God alone, and to Him shall all affairs be referred. So worship Him and put your trust in Him alone. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do.
M. Sarwar To God belongs the knowledge of the unseen in the heavens and the earth and to Him do all affairs return. Worship Him and trust Him. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do.
