The Qurʾān

Chapter 113

  1. qul aʿūdhū bi-rabbi l-falaq.
  2. min sharri mā khalaq.
  3. wa-min sharri ghāsiqin? idhā waqab?.
  4. wa-min sharri al-affāthāti? fīl-ʿūqad.
  5. wa-min sharri ḥāsidin idhā ḥasad.

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘I seek refuge with the Lord of daybreak
Yusuf Ali Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn
W. Khan Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "I seek protection from the Lord of the Dawn

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem against the harm in what He has created,
Yusuf Ali From the mischief of created things;
W. Khan from the evil of what He has created,
M. Sarwar against the evil of whatever He has created.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem the harm in the night when darkness gathers,
Yusuf Ali From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads;
W. Khan from the evil of darkness as it descends,
M. Sarwar I seek His protection against the evil of the invading darkness,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem the harm in witches when they blow on knots,
Yusuf Ali From the mischief of those who practise secret arts;
W. Khan from the evil of those who blow on knots
M. Sarwar from the evil of those who practice witchcraft

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem the harm in the envier when he envies.’
Yusuf Ali And from the mischief of the envious one as he practises envy.
W. Khan and from the evil of the envier when he envies.’
M. Sarwar and from the evil of the envious ones.
