The Qurʾān

Chapter 14: Ibrāhīm — Abraham

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Alif Lam Ra This is a Scripture which We have sent down to you [Prophet] so that, with their Lord’s permission, you may bring people from the depths of darkness into light, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy One,
Yusuf Ali A. L. R. A Book which We have revealed unto thee, in order that thou mightest lead mankind out of the depths of darkness into light - by the leave of their Lord - to the Way of (Him) the Exalted in power, worthy of all praise!-
W. Khan Alif Lam Ra We have revealed to you this Book so that, by their Lord’s command, you may lead men from darkness to the light: to the path of the Mighty, the Praiseworthy One,
M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Ra. A Book has been revealed to you, (Muhammad), so that, by the permission of their Lord, you would be able to lead people from darkness into light along the path of the Majestic, Praised One.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem God, to whom everything in the heavens and earth belongs. How terrible will be the torment of those who ignore [Him],
Yusuf Ali Of Allah, to Whom do belong all things in the heavens and on earth! But alas for the Unbelievers for a terrible penalty (their Unfaith will bring them)!-
W. Khan to God, who possesses whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Woe to those who deny the truth, for they shall be sternly punished!
M. Sarwar To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Woe to the disbelievers; they will face the most severe punishment!

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem those who prefer the life of this world over the life to come, who turn others from God’s way, trying to make it crooked: such people have gone far astray.
Yusuf Ali Those who love the life of this world more than the Hereafter, who hinder (men) from the Path of Allah and seek therein something crooked: they are astray by a long distance.
W. Khan Woe to those who love this life more than the Hereafter; who turn others away from the path of God and seek to make it crooked. They have gone far astray.
M. Sarwar It is they who have given preference to the worldly life over the life to come. They create obstacles in the way that leads to God and try to make it seem crooked. They are in manifest error.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem We have never sent a messenger who did not use his own people’s language to make things clear for them. But still God leaves whoever He will to stray, and guides whoever He will: He is the Almighty, the All Wise.
Yusuf Ali We sent not a messenger except (to teach) in the language of his (own) people, in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases: and He is Exalted in power, full of Wisdom.
W. Khan Each messenger We have sent has spoken in the language of his own people, so that he might make the message clear to them. But God lets go astray whom He will and guides whom He pleases. He is the Almighty, the All Wise.
M. Sarwar All the Messengers that We sent spoke the language of their people so that they could explain (their message to them). God guides or causes to go astray whomever He wants. He is Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem We sent Moses with Our signs: ‘Bring out your people from the depths of darkness into light. Remind them of the Days of God:there truly are signs in this for every steadfast, thankful person.’
Yusuf Ali We sent Moses with Our signs (and the command). "Bring out thy people from the depths of darkness into light, and teach them to remember the Days of Allah." Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant,- grateful and appreciative.
W. Khan We sent Moses with Our signs, saying, ‘Lead your people out of the darkness into the light, and remind them of God’s Days. In that there are signs for every patient, grateful person.’
M. Sarwar We sent Moses and gave him miracles in order to lead his people from darkness into light and to remind them of the days of God. In this there is evidence (of the truth) for those who exercise patience and give thanks.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem And so Moses said to his people, ‘Remember God’s blessing on you when He saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were inflicting terrible suffering on you, slaughtering your sons and sparing only your women––that was a severe test from your Lord!
Yusuf Ali Remember! Moses said to his people: "Call to mind the favour of Allah to you when He delivered you from the people of Pharaoh: they set you hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons, and let your women-folk live: therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord."
W. Khan Moses said to his people, ‘Remember God’s goodness to you when He delivered you from Pharaoh’s people who were treating you cruelly, putting your sons to death and sparing only your daughters. Surely that was a great trial from your Lord.
M. Sarwar Moses told his people, "Remember the favors that God granted you when He saved you from the people of the Pharaoh who had punished you in the worst manner by murdering your sons and keeping your women alive. It was a great trial for you from your Lord.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Remember that He promised, “If you are thankful, I will give you more, but if you are thankless, My punishment is terrible indeed.” ’
Yusuf Ali And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed."
W. Khan Remember also the time when your Lord declared, “If you are grateful, I will surely bestow more favours on you; but if you are ungrateful, then know that My punishment is severe indeed.”’
M. Sarwar "Remember when your Lord said to you, 'If you give thanks, I shall give you greater (favors), but if you deny the Truth, know that My retribution is severe ".

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem And Moses said, ‘Even if you, together with everybody else on earth, are thankless, God is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise.’
Yusuf Ali And Moses said: "If ye show ingratitude, ye and all on earth together, yet is Allah free of all wants, worthy of all praise.
W. Khan Moses said, ‘Even if you should deny the truth, and all who dwell on earth together, God is self-sufficient, praiseworthy.’
M. Sarwar Moses told his people, "If you and everyone on the earth turn to disbelief, know that God is Self-sufficient and Praiseworthy."

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem Have you not heard about those who went before you, the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, and those who lived after them, known only to God? Their messengers came to them with clear proof, but they tried to silence them, saying, ‘We do not believe the message with which you were sent. We have disturbing doubts about what you are asking us to do.’
Yusuf Ali Has not the story reached you, (O people!), of those who (went) before you? - of the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud? - And of those who (came) after them? None knows them but Allah. To them came messengers with Clear (Signs); but they put their hands up to their mouths, and said: "We do deny (the mission) on which ye have been sent, and we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which ye invite us."
W. Khan Has not news come to you concerning those who preceded you, such as Noah’s people, and the ‘Ad and Thamud, as well as those who came after them? Only God knows who they were. The messengers came to them with clear signs, but they put their hands to their mouths saying, ‘We deny the message you have been sent with. We have grave doubts about what you are inviting us to do.’
M. Sarwar Have you (believers) ever heard the news about those who lived before you, like the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, and those who lived after them? No one knows about them except God. Messengers were sent to them with miracles, but they put their hands to their mouths and said, "We do not believe in whatever you preach and we are also doubtful and uncertain about that to which you invite us."

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Their messengers answered, ‘Can there be any doubt about God, the Creator of the heavens and earth? He calls you to Him in order to forgive you your sins and let you enjoy your life until the appointed hour.’ But they said, ‘You are only men like us. You want to turn us away from what our forefathers used to worship. Bring us clear proof then, [if you can].’
Yusuf Ali Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."
W. Khan Their messengers said, ‘Is there any doubt about God, the Originator of the heavens and earth? He calls you to Him in order to forgive you some of your offences and to reprieve you for a specific period.’ They said, ‘You are only human beings like ourselves! You want to divert us from what our forefathers have been worshipping, so bring us some clear authority.’
M. Sarwar The Messengers asked them, "Could there be any doubt about the existence of God who has created the heavens and the earth? He calls you to Himself to forgive your sins. He gives you respite only until the appointed time." They said, "You are mere mortals like us. What you want is to prevent us from worshipping that which our fathers worshipped. Show us clear proof (if what you say is true)."

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem Their messengers answered, ‘True, we are only men like you, but God favours whichever of His servants He chooses. We cannot bring you any proof unless God permits it, so let the believers put all their trust in Him-
Yusuf Ali Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves, but Allah doth grant His grace to such of his servants as He pleases. It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits. And on Allah let all men of faith put their trust.
W. Khan Their messengers replied, ‘We are indeed mortals like yourselves. But God bestows His grace on such of His servants as He chooses. We cannot give you miracles, except by God’s leave. In God let true believers put their trust—
M. Sarwar The Messengers replied, "We are certainly mere mortals like you, but God bestows His favors on whichever of His servants He wants. We can not bring you authority without the permission of God. The faithful should trust in God alone.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem why should we not put our trust in God when it is He who has guided us to this way we follow? We shall certainly bear steadfastly whatever harm you do to us. Let anyone who trusts, trust in God.’
Yusuf Ali "No reason have we why we should not put our trust on Allah. Indeed He Has guided us to the Ways we (follow). We shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us. For those who put their trust should put their trust on Allah."
W. Khan and why should we not put our trust in God when He has already guided us to our paths? We will, surely, bear with patience all the harm you do us. So in God let those who trust put their trust.’
M. Sarwar Why should we not trust in God when He has shown us the right way? We shall exercise patience against the troubles with which you afflict us. Whoever needs a trustee should trust in God."

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem The disbelievers said to their messengers, ‘We shall expel you from our land unless you return to our religion.’ But their Lord inspired the messengers: ‘We shall destroy the evildoers,
Yusuf Ali And the Unbelievers said to their messengers: "Be sure we shall drive you out of our land, or ye shall return to our religion." But their Lord inspired (this Message) to them: "Verily We shall cause the wrong-doers to perish!
W. Khan Those who deny the truth said to their messengers, ‘We shall banish you from our land unless you return to our ways.’ But their Lord inspired the messengers, saying, ‘We shall destroy the evil-doers,
M. Sarwar The disbelievers told the Messengers, "We shall expel you from our land unless you revert to our religion." Their Lord then sent them (the messengers) a revelation, "We have decided to destroy the unjust

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem and leave you to dwell in the land after them. This reward is for those who are in awe of meeting Me, and of My warnings.’
Yusuf Ali "And verily We shall cause you to abide in the land, and succeed them. This for such as fear the Time when they shall stand before My tribunal,- such as fear the punishment denounced."
W. Khan and settle you on the land to succeed them. That is [in store] for anyone who is in awe of meeting Me, and who heeds My warnings.’
M. Sarwar and settle you in the land thereafter. This is for those who are afraid of Me and of My warning."

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem They asked God to decide, and every obstinate tyrant failed-
Yusuf Ali But they sought victory and decision (there and then), and frustration was the lot of every powerful obstinate transgressor.
W. Khan When they sought Our Judgement, every stubborn oppressor was frustrated.
M. Sarwar They prayed for victory and the haughty transgressors were defeated.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Hell awaits each one; he will be given foul water to drink,
Yusuf Ali In front of such a one is Hell, and he is given, for drink, boiling fetid water.
W. Khan Beyond him is Hell, and he shall drink putrid water;
M. Sarwar Thereafter they will face hell fire wherein they will drink boiling water.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem which he will try to gulp but scarcely be able to swallow; death will encroach on him from every side, but he will not die; more intense suffering will lie ahead of him.
Yusuf Ali In gulps will he sip it, but never will he be near swallowing it down his throat: death will come to him from every quarter, yet will he not die: and in front of him will be a chastisement unrelenting.
W. Khan he will sip and will not find it easy to swallow it. Death will approach him from every quarter, yet he will not die. More intense suffering will lie ahead of him.
M. Sarwar As they sip the unpleasant water, death will approach them from all sides, but they will never die. In addition to this, they will experience the most intense torment.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem The deeds of those who reject their Lord are like ashes that the wind blows furiously on a stormy day: they have no power over anything they have gained. This is to stray far, far away.
Yusuf Ali The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal).
W. Khan The works of those who deny their Lord are like ashes which the wind scatters on a stormy day: they shall gain nothing from what they do. To act thus is to stray far into error.
M. Sarwar The deeds of those who deny the existence of their Lord are like ashes blown about by a strong wind on a stormy day. They will achieve nothing from their deeds. (What they have done) is a manifest error.

Verse 19

wislam.org Don’t you see that Allāh created the skies and earth with true [wisdom]. If Allāh wished, Allāh would do away with you and bring a new creation.
Sahih Intl Have you not seen that Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can do away with you and produce a new creation.
Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do you not see that God created the heavens and the earth for a purpose? He could remove all of you and replace you with a new creation if He wished to:
Yusuf Ali Seest thou not that Allah created the heavens and the earth in Truth? If He so will, He can remove you and put (in your place) a new creation?
W. Khan Do you not see that God has created the heavens and the earth for a purpose? He can eliminate you if He wills and bring into being a new creation:
M. Sarwar Do you not realize that God has created the heavens and the earth for a genuine purpose
G. Sale Dost thou not see that God hath created the heavens and the earth in wisdom? If He please, he can destroy you, and produce a new creature in your stead:

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem that is not difficult for God.
Yusuf Ali Nor is that for Allah any great matter.
W. Khan that is no difficult thing for God.
M. Sarwar and that it is not at all difficult for God to replace you with another creature if He so wills?

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem When they all appear before Him, the weak will say to the powerseekers, ‘We were your followers. Can you protect us from any of God’s punishment?’ They will reply, ‘If God had guided us, we would have guided you. It makes no difference now whether we rage or endure with patience: there is no escape.’
Yusuf Ali They will all be marshalled before Allah together: then will the weak say to those who were arrogant, "For us, we but followed you; can ye then avail us to all against the wrath of Allah?" They will reply, "If we had received the Guidance of Allah, we should have given it to you: to us it makes no difference (now) whether we rage, or bear (these torments) with patience: for ourselves there is no way of escape."
W. Khan They shall all appear before God and the weak will say to those who behaved proudly, ‘We were your followers. Can you protect us from God’s punishment?’ They will reply, ‘Had God given us guidance, we would have guided you. It is all the same whether we are patient or impatient; there is no escape for us.’
M. Sarwar (On the Day of Judgment) everyone will appear before God and those who have been suppressed will say to their oppressors, "We were your followers, can you do anything to rescue us from the torment of God?" They will reply, "Had God guided us, we would also have guided you. It makes no difference whether we cry for help or exercise patience; there is no escape for us."

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem When everything has been decided, Satan will say, ‘God gave you a true promise. I too made promises but they were false ones: I had no power over you except to call you, and you responded to my call, so do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I reject the way you associated me with God before.’ A bitter torment awaits such wrongdoers,
Yusuf Ali And Satan will say when the matter is decided: "It was Allah Who gave you a promise of Truth: I too promised, but I failed in my promise to you. I had no authority over you except to call you but ye listened to me: then reproach not me, but reproach your own souls. I cannot listen to your cries, nor can ye listen to mine. I reject your former act in associating me with Allah. For wrong-doers there must be a grievous penalty."
W. Khan When the Judgement has been passed, Satan will say to them, ‘God made you a true promise; I too made you promises, but I failed you. I had no authority over you, except that I called you and you responded to me. Do not now blame me, but blame yourselves! I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I reject your former act in associating me with God.’ The wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.
M. Sarwar When the decree of God is issued, satan will say, "God's promise to you was true, but I, too, made a promise to you and disregarded it. I had no authority over you. I just called you and you answered. Do not blame me but blame yourselves. I cannot help you and you cannot help me. I did not agree with your belief that I was equal to God." The unjust will face a painful punishment.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem but those who believed and did good deeds will be brought into Gardens graced with flowing streams, there to remain with their Lord’s permission: their greeting there is ‘Peace’.
Yusuf Ali But those who believe and work righteousness will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow,- to dwell therein for aye with the leave of their Lord. Their greeting therein will be: "Peace!"
W. Khan But those who believed and did good deeds will be brought into Gardens with rivers flowing through them. They shall abide there forever by their Lord’s permission, and will be welcomed with the greeting, ‘Peace’!
M. Sarwar The righteously striving believers will be admitted to the gardens wherein streams flow and they will live therein forever, by the permission of their Lord. Their greeting to each other will be, "Peace be with you."

Verse 24

Sahih Intl Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?
T. Khalidi Do you not see how God draws a parable: A goodly word is like a goodly tree; its roots are firm and its branches reach to the sky.
Y. Emerick Don’t you see how God illustrates the example of a good word? It’s like a good tree whose roots are strong and stable, with branches jutting up into the sky.
Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do you not see how God makes comparisons? A good word is like a good tree whose root is firm and whose branches are high in the sky,
Yusuf Ali Seest thou not how Allah sets forth a parable? - A goodly word like a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the heavens,- of its Lord.
W. Khan Do you not see how God compares a good word to a good tree? Its root is firm and its branches are in the sky,
M. Sarwar Consider (Muhammad) how God (in a parable) compares the blessed Word to that of a blessed tree which has firm roots and branches rising up into the sky

Verse 25

Sahih Intl It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded.
T. Khalidi It brings forth its nourishment at every turn, by its Lord’s leave. And God draws parables for mankind; perhaps they will reflect.
Y. Emerick It bears fruit at all times, by its Lord’s permission. God offers such examples for people so they can be reminded.
Abdel Haleem yielding constant fruit by its Lord’s leave- God makes such comparisons for people so that they may reflect-
Yusuf Ali It brings forth its fruit at all times, by the leave of its Lord. So Allah sets forth parables for men, in order that they may receive admonition.
W. Khan it yields its fruit each season with its Lord’s permission—God makes such comparisons for people, in order that they may take heed—
M. Sarwar and yields fruits in every season, by the permission of its Lord? God sets forth parables for people so that they may take heed.

Verse 26

Sahih Intl And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.
T. Khalidi And the likeness of an evil word is like an evil tree uprooted from the ground; no bed has she.
Y. Emerick Now the example of a rotten word is like a rotten tree that’s been torn out of the earth by its roots. It has no way to hold itself up!
Abdel Haleem but an evil word is like a rotten tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, with no power to endure.
Yusuf Ali And the parable of an evil Word is that of an evil tree: It is torn up by the root from the surface of the earth: it has no stability.
W. Khan but an evil word is like an evil tree torn out of the earth; it has no foothold.
M. Sarwar An evil word is compared to an evil tree with no firm roots in the land and thus has no stability.

Verse 27

Sahih Intl Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills.
T. Khalidi God gives strength to the faithful with speech unchanging in the present life and in the hereafter, and He leads the wicked astray. God does what He wills.
Y. Emerick God will support and uphold those who believe in the good word, both in this life and the next, while Gd let the wrongdoers go astray, and God does whatever He wants.
Abdel Haleem God will give firmness to those who believe in the firmly rooted word, both in this world and the Hereafter, but the evildoers He leaves to stray: God does whatever He will.
Yusuf Ali Allah will establish in strength those who believe, with the word that stands firm, in this world and in the Hereafter; but Allah will leave, to stray, those who do wrong: Allah doeth what He willeth.
W. Khan God will strengthen the believers with His steadfast word, both in the present life and in the Hereafter. God lets the wrongdoers go astray. He does what He wills.
M. Sarwar God strengthens the faith of the believers by the true Words in this world and in the life to come. He causes the unjust to go astray and does whatever He pleases.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do you not see those who, in exchange for God’s favour, offer only ingratitude and make their people end up in the home of ruin, Hell,
Yusuf Ali Hast thou not turned thy vision to those who have changed the favour of Allah. Into blasphemy and caused their people to descend to the House of Perdition?-
W. Khan Do you not see those who, in exchange for God’s favour, offer only ingratitude and cause their people to descend into the Abode of Ruin?
M. Sarwar Have you not seen those who changed the Word of God through disbelief and led their people to destruction?

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem where they burn? What an evil place to stay!
Yusuf Ali Into Hell? They will burn therein,- an evil place to stay in!
W. Khan In Hell shall they burn; an evil place to stay.
M. Sarwar They will suffer in Hell. What a terrible place to stay!

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem They set up [false deities] as God’s equals to lead people astray from His path. Say, ‘Take your pleasure now, for your destination is the Fire.’
Yusuf Ali And they set up (idols) as equal to Allah, to mislead (men) from the Path! Say: "Enjoy (your brief power)! But verily ye are making straightway for Hell!"
W. Khan They have set up rivals to God to lead people away from His path. Say, ‘Enjoy yourselves awhile: you will then proceed to the Fire.’
M. Sarwar To lead people astray, they claimed their idols were equal to God. (Muhammad), tell them, "Enjoy yourselves and know that the only place for you to go will be hell fire."

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Tell My servants who have believed to keep up the prayer and give, secretly and in public, out of what We have provided them, before a Day comes when there will be no trading or friendship.
Yusuf Ali Speak to my servants who have believed, that they may establish regular prayers, and spend (in charity) out of the sustenance we have given them, secretly and openly, before the coming of a Day in which there will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending.
W. Khan Tell My servants, those who are true believers, to keep up prayer and to give alms secretly and openly out of what We have given them, before the Day comes when there will be neither trading nor befriending.
M. Sarwar Tell My believing servants to be steadfast in prayer and to spend for the cause of their Lord, both in private and in public, out of what We have given them. Let them do this before the coming of the day when there will be no merchandising or friendship.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem It is God who created the heavens and earth, who has sent down water from the sky and with it brought forth produce to nourish you; He has made ships useful to you, sailing the sea by His command, and the rivers too;
Yusuf Ali It is Allah Who hath created the heavens and the earth and sendeth down rain from the skies, and with it bringeth out fruits wherewith to feed you; it is He Who hath made the ships subject to you, that they may sail through the sea by His command; and the rivers (also) hath He made subject to you.
W. Khan It was God who created the heavens and the earth. He sends down water from the sky with which He brings forth fruits for your sustenance; He has made ships subservient to you, so that they may sail across the sea by His command; and has subjected the rivers to you.
M. Sarwar God is the One who created the heavens and the earth, sent down water from the sky by which He produced fruits for your sustenance, enabled you to use boats to sail on the sea, and placed the rivers at your disposal, all by His command.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem He has made the sun and the moon useful to you, steady on their paths; He has made the night and day useful to you
Yusuf Ali And He hath made subject to you the sun and the moon, both diligently pursuing their courses; and the night and the day hath he (also) made subject to you.
W. Khan He has also subjected to you the sun and the moon, both steadfastly pursuing their courses. He has subjected to you the night as well as the day;
M. Sarwar He made the sun and moon, each following its course, and the day and the night all subservient to you.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem and given you some of everything you asked Him for. If you tried to count God’s favours you could never calculate them: man is truly unjust and ungrateful.
Yusuf Ali And He giveth you of all that ye ask for. But if ye count the favours of Allah, never will ye be able to number them. Verily, man is given up to injustice and ingratitude.
W. Khan He has given you all that you asked of Him; and if you try to reckon up God’s favours, you will not be able to count them. Truly man is very unjust, very ungrateful.
M. Sarwar He has given you everything that you asked Him for. Had you wanted to count the bounties of God, you would not have been able to do it. The human being is unjust and disbelieving.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem Remember when Abraham said, ‘Lord, make this town safe! Preserve me and my offspring from idolatry,
Yusuf Ali Remember Abraham said: "O my Lord! make this city one of peace and security: and preserve me and my sons from worshipping idols.
W. Khan [Remember] when Abraham said, ‘My Lord, make this a city of peace and help me and my children to keep away from worshipping idols.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), consider when Abraham prayed, "Lord, make this (Mecca) a peaceful territory and save me and my offspring from worshipping idols.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem Lord, the [idols] have led many people astray! Anyone who follows me is with me, but as for anyone who disobeys me- You are surely forgiving and merciful.
Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! they have indeed led astray many among mankind; He then who follows my (ways) is of me, and he that disobeys me,- but Thou art indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan My Lord, they have led so many men astray! Anyone who follows me is with me, but if anyone turns against me, You are surely forgiving and merciful.
M. Sarwar Lord, the idols have misled many people. Whoever follows me is my friend. As for those who disobey, You are certainly All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Our Lord, I have established some of my offspring in an uncultivated valley, close to Your Sacred House, Lord, so that they may keep up the prayer. Make people’s hearts turn to them, and provide them with produce, so that they may be thankful.
Yusuf Ali "O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley without cultivation, by Thy Sacred House; in order, O our Lord, that they may establish regular Prayer: so fill the hearts of some among men with love towards them, and feed them with fruits: so that they may give thanks.
W. Khan O Lord! I have settled some of my offspring in an uncultivable valley near Your Sacred House, Lord, so that they may say their prayers regularly. So, make people’s hearts incline towards them and provide them with fruits so that they may be grateful.
M. Sarwar "Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a barren valley near your Sacred House so that they could be steadfast in prayer. Lord, fill the hearts of the people with love for them and produce fruits for their sustenance so that they may give thanks.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem Our Lord, You know well what we conceal and what we reveal: nothing at all is hidden from God, on earth or in heaven.
Yusuf Ali "O our Lord! truly Thou dost know what we conceal and what we reveal: for nothing whatever is hidden from Allah, whether on earth or in heaven.
W. Khan Lord, You have knowledge of all that we hide and all that we reveal: nothing in heaven or on earth is hidden from God.
M. Sarwar Lord, You know all that we conceal or reveal. Nothing in the heavens or the earth is hidden from God.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem Praise be to God, who has granted me Ishmael and Isaac in my old age: my Lord hears all requests!
Yusuf Ali "Praise be to Allah, Who hath granted unto me in old age Isma'il and Isaac: for truly my Lord is He, the Hearer of Prayer!
W. Khan Praise be to God who has bestowed upon me, despite my old age, Ishmael and Isaac. Surely my Lord is the hearer of prayer.
M. Sarwar It is only God who deserves all praise. I praise Him for His giving me my sons Ishmael and Isaac during my old age. My Lord, certainly, hears all prayers.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem Lord, grant that I and my offspring may keep up the prayer. Our Lord, accept my request.
Yusuf Ali O my Lord! make me one who establishes regular Prayer, and also (raise such) among my offspring O our Lord! and accept Thou my Prayer.
W. Khan Lord, grant that I may keep up the prayer, and so may my offspring. My Lord, accept my prayer.
M. Sarwar Lord, make me and my offspring steadfast in prayer and accept our worship.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.’
Yusuf Ali "O our Lord! cover (us) with Thy Forgiveness - me, my parents, and (all) Believers, on the Day that the Reckoning will be established!
W. Khan Forgive me, Lord, and forgive my parents and all the believers on the Day of Reckoning.’
M. Sarwar Lord, on the Day of Judgment, forgive me and my parents and all the believers."

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem Do not think [Prophet] that God is unaware of what the disbelievers do: He only gives them respite until a Day when their eyes will stare in terror.
Yusuf Ali Think not that Allah doth not heed the deeds of those who do wrong. He but giveth them respite against a Day when the eyes will fixedly stare in horror,-
W. Khan Do not think God is unaware of the wrongdoers’ actions. He only gives them respite till the Day on which all eyes will stare fixedly in horror.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), do not think that God is unaware of what the unjust people do. He only gives them a respite until the day when the eyes will stare fixedly,

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem They will rush forward, craning their necks, unable to divert their eyes, a gaping void in their hearts.
Yusuf Ali They running forward with necks outstretched, their heads uplifted, their gaze returning not towards them, and their hearts a (gaping) void!
W. Khan They will hurry on in fright, their heads lifted up, their gaze directed forward, their minds utterly void.
M. Sarwar when people will hurry in fright, their heads raised, their eyes unable to look around, and their hearts stunned due to the confusion (which will prevail on that Day).

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem So warn people of the Day when punishment will come to them, and when the disbelievers will say, ‘Our Lord, give us a little more time: we shall answer Your call and follow the messengers.’ Did you [disbelievers] not swear in the past that your power would have no end?
Yusuf Ali So warn mankind of the Day when the Wrath will reach them: then will the wrong-doers say: "Our Lord! respite us (if only) for a short term: we will answer Thy call, and follow the messengers!" "What! were ye not wont to swear aforetime that ye should suffer no decline?
W. Khan Warn men of the Day when the punishment will come upon them, and when the wrongdoers will say, ‘Our Lord, grant us respite for a short while. We will respond to Your call and will follow the messengers.’ [But God will answer], are you not those who swore that you would never suffer any decline?
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), warn the people of the day when torment will approach them and the unjust will say, "Lord, give us respite for a little time so that we may answer your call and follow the Messengers." (The answer to their prayer will be), "Did you not swear before that you would never perish?

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem You lived in the same places as others who wronged themselves before, and you were clearly shown how We dealt with them––We gave you many examples.
Yusuf Ali "And ye dwelt in the dwellings of men who wronged their own souls; ye were clearly shown how We dealt with them; and We put forth (many) parables in your behoof!"
W. Khan You lived in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it was made clear to you how We had dealt with them and We gave you many examples.
M. Sarwar You lived in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, even though it was made clear to you how We dealt with them. We also showed you examples."

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem They made their plots, but, even if their plots had been able to move mountains, God had the answer.
Yusuf Ali Mighty indeed were the plots which they made, but their plots were (well) within the sight of Allah, even though they were such as to shake the hills!
W. Khan They hatched their plots; but these plots were all within God’s knowledge. Though their plots were such as to shake the mountains, God will bring their plots to nothing.
M. Sarwar They devised evil plans which were so sinful that even the mountains could not endure them. All these were known to God.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem So do not think [Prophet] that God will break His promise to His messengers: He is mighty, and capable of retribution.
Yusuf Ali Never think that Allah would fail his messengers in His promise: for Allah is Exalted in power, - the Lord of Retribution.
W. Khan Never think that God will fail in His promise to His messengers. God is mighty and capable of retribution.
M. Sarwar You must not even think that God will disregard His promise to His messengers. God is Majestic and Revengeful.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem One Day- when the earth is turned into another earth, the heavens into another heaven, and people all appear before God, the One, the Overpowering-
Yusuf Ali One day the earth will be changed to a different earth, and so will be the heavens, and (men) will be marshalled forth, before Allah, the One, the Irresistible;
W. Khan On the Day when the earth shall be changed into another earth, as shall be the heavens, they will all appear before God, the One, the Most Supreme.
M. Sarwar On the day when the earth and the heavens will be replaced by another earth and heavens and everyone will be brought before the One Almighty God,

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem you [Prophet] will see the guilty on that Day, bound together in fetters,

Abdel Haleem [All will be judged] so that God may reward each soul as it deserves: God is swift in His reckoning.
Yusuf Ali That Allah may requite each soul according to its deserts; and verily Allah is swift in calling to account.
W. Khan God will requite each soul according to its deeds. Swift is God’s reckoning.
M. Sarwar This is how God will recompense each soul for its deeds. God's reckoning is swift.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem This is a message to all people, so that they may be warned by it, and know that He is the only God, and so that those who have minds may take heed.
Yusuf Ali Here is a Message for mankind: Let them take warning therefrom, and let them know that He is (no other than) One Allah: let men of understanding take heed.
W. Khan This is a message for mankind. Let them take warning from it and know that He is but one God. Let those possessed of understanding may take heed.
M. Sarwar This is an admonition for the people that they will be warned and know that He is the only God, and so that the people of understanding may take heed.
