W. Khan Alif Lam Ra These are the verses of a clear Book, the Quran.
M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the verses of the Book and the glorious Quran.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem The disbelievers may well come to wish they had submitted to God,
Yusuf Ali Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam.
W. Khan A time will surely come when those who are bent on denying the truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God,
M. Sarwar How strongly the unbelievers will wish that they had been Muslims.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem so [Prophet] leave them to eat and enjoy themselves. Let [false] hopes distract them: they will come to know.
Yusuf Ali Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them).
W. Khan so leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and let them be beguiled by vain hopes; for soon they will realise [the truth].
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), leave them alone to eat and enjoy themselves and let their desires deceive them; they will soon know (the Truth).

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem Never have We destroyed a community that did not have a set time;
Yusuf Ali Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand.
W. Khan We have never destroyed a township without a definite decree having been issued;
M. Sarwar We never destroyed any town without pre-ordaining the fate of its people.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem no community can bring its time forward, nor delay it.
Yusuf Ali Neither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it.
W. Khan no people can forestall their doom, nor can they delay it.
M. Sarwar Every nation can only live for the time appointed for it.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem They say, ‘Receiver of this Quran! You are definitely mad.
Yusuf Ali They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)!
W. Khan They say, ‘You to whom the Reminder [the Quran] has been sent down, you are surely possessed.
M. Sarwar (The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are telling the truth?’
Yusuf Ali "Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?"
W. Khan Why do you not bring down the angels upon us, if you are truthful?’
M. Sarwar Why do you not bring down the angels if what you say is true".

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem But We send down the angels only to bring justice and then these people will not be reprieved.
Yusuf Ali We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have!
W. Khan But We send down the angels only to bring justice and then they will not be reprieved.
M. Sarwar We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem We have sent down the Quran Ourself, and We Ourself will guard it. Even before you [Prophet],
Yusuf Ali We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).
W. Khan It is We who have sent down the Reminder and We will, most surely, safeguard it.
M. Sarwar We Ourselves have revealed the Quran and We are its Protectors.

Verse 10

Yusuf Ali We did send messengers before thee amongst the religious sects of old:
W. Khan We sent messengers before you to the previous peoples,
M. Sarwar We sent Messengers to the ancient people who lived before you.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem but they mocked every single messenger that came to them:
Yusuf Ali But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him.
W. Khan but there was never a messenger who came to them but they mocked him:
M. Sarwar No Messenger went to them whom they did not mock.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem in this way We make the message slip through the hearts of evildoers.
Yusuf Ali Even so do we let it creep into the hearts of the sinners -
W. Khan thus We cause this [habit of mocking] to enter into the hearts of the sinful.
M. Sarwar This is how We cause the hearts of the guilty ones to behave.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem They will not believe in it. That was what happened with the peoples of long ago,
Yusuf Ali That they should not believe in the (Message); but the ways of the ancients have passed away.
W. Khan They will not believe in it, though they have before them the example of former peoples,
M. Sarwar They do not believe in the Truth and they exactly follow the tradition of the ancient (unbelievers)

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem and even if We opened a gateway into Heaven for them and they rose through it, higher and higher,
Yusuf Ali Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein,
W. Khan and even if We opened to them a door from heaven, and they began ascending through it,
M. Sarwar Had We opened a door for them in the sky through which they could easily pass,

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem they would still say, ‘Our eyes are hallucinating. We are bewitched.’
Yusuf Ali They would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery."
W. Khan they would still say, ‘Our eyes have been dazzled. We are bewitched.’
M. Sarwar they would have said, "Our eyes are bewildered and we have been affected by magic."

Yusuf Ali But any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see).
W. Khan but if anyone eavesdrops, he is pursued by a bright flaming fire.
M. Sarwar except for those who stealthily try to listen to the heavens, but who are chased away by a bright flame.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem As for the earth, We have spread it out, set firm mountains on it, and made everything grow there in due balance.
Yusuf Ali And the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.

W. Khan There is not a thing but its storehouses are with Us. But We only send down each thing in an appropriate measure:
M. Sarwar With Us is the source of everything and We do not send it down except in a known quantity.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem We send the winds to fertilize, and We bring down water from the sky for you to drink- you do not control its sources.
Yusuf Ali And We send the fecundating winds, then cause the rain to descend from the sky, therewith providing you with water (in abundance), though ye are not the guardians of its stores.
W. Khan We let loose fertilizing winds, and bring water from the sky for you to drink; and you could not have stored it up for yourselves.
M. Sarwar We send impregnating winds and send down water from the sky for you to drink and you have no (control over its) storage.

Verse 23
