The Qurʾān

Chapter 21

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Ever closer to people draws their reckoning, while they turn away, heedless.
Yusuf Ali Closer and closer to mankind comes their Reckoning: yet they heed not and they turn away.
W. Khan The time of reckoning has drawn near for mankind, yet they are heedless and turn away.
M. Sarwar The people's day of reckoning is drawing closer, yet they are heedlessly neglectful.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem Whenever any fresh revelation comes to them from their Lord, they listen to it playfully
Yusuf Ali Never comes (aught) to them of a renewed Message from their Lord, but they listen to it as in jest,-
W. Khan Whenever any fresh admonition comes to them from their Lord, they listen to it, but do not take it seriously;
M. Sarwar Whenever a new revelation comes to them from their Lord, they listen to it in a playful manner,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem with frivolous hearts. The evildoers conferred in secret: ‘Is this man anything but a mortal like yourselves? Are you going to fall under his spell with your eyes wide open?’
Yusuf Ali Their hearts toying as with trifles. The wrong-doers conceal their private counsels, (saying), "Is this (one) more than a man like yourselves? Will ye go to witchcraft with your eyes open?"
W. Khan their hearts are distracted and forgetful. The wrongdoers confer together secretly, saying, ‘Is not this man a mortal like you? Will you succumb to magic with your eyes open?’
M. Sarwar and their hearts are preoccupied with trivial matters. The unjust ones whisper to each other and say, "Is he (Muhammad) more than a mere mortal like you? How can you follow that which you know is only a magic?"

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My Lord knows everything that is said in the heavens and the earth: He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "My Lord knoweth (every) word (spoken) in the heavens and on earth: He is the One that heareth and knoweth (all things)."
W. Khan Say, ‘My Lord knows every word spoken in the heavens and on the earth. He is All Hearing, All Knowing.’
M. Sarwar The Lord said, "Tell them (Muhammad), 'My Lord knows all that is said in the heavens and the earth. He is All-hearing and All-knowing ".

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Some say, ‘Muddled dreams’; others, ‘He made it up’; yet others, ‘He is just a poet, let him show us a sign as previous messengers did.’
Yusuf Ali "Nay," they say, "(these are) medleys of dream! - Nay, He forged it! - Nay, He is (but) a poet! Let him then bring us a Sign like the ones that were sent to (Prophets) of old!"
W. Khan Some say, ‘These are his confused dreams.’ Others say, ‘He has invented it himself,’ and yet others say, ‘He is a poet. Let him bring us a sign as previous messengers did.’
M. Sarwar They have said, "It, (the Quran), is only the result of some confused dreams. He is only a poet. He should show us some miracles, as the ancient Prophets had done."

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem But of the communities We destroyed before them not a single one believed. Will these now believe?
Yusuf Ali (As to those) before them, not one of the populations which We destroyed believed: will these believe?
W. Khan Before them, not one of the communities which We destroyed believed either. Will these believe?
M. Sarwar The people of the town whom We had destroyed also had no faith. Will these people then believe in God?

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem And even before your time [Prophet], all the messengers We sent were only men We inspired–– if you [disbelievers] do not know, ask people who know the Scripture––
Yusuf Ali Before thee, also, the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: If ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.
W. Khan The messengers We sent before you were but men whom We had sent revelations. Ask the People of the Book if you do not know this—
M. Sarwar The messengers that We had sent before you were only men to whom We had given revelation. Ask the People of the Book if you do not know.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem We did not give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they immortal.
Yusuf Ali Nor did We give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they exempt from death.
W. Khan We did not give them bodies that needed no food, nor were they to live forever.
M. Sarwar We had not made them such bodies that would not eat any food nor were they immortal.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem We fulfilled Our promise to them in the end: We saved them and those We wished to save, and We destroyed those who exceeded all bounds.
Yusuf Ali In the end We fulfilled to them Our Promise, and We saved them and those whom We pleased, but We destroyed those who transgressed beyond bounds.
W. Khan Then We fulfilled Our promise to them and We saved them and those with them whom We pleased, and We destroyed those who exceeded all bounds.
M. Sarwar Our promise to them came true and We saved them and those whom We wanted, but destroyed the unjust people.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem And now We have sent down to you [people] a Scripture to remind you. Will you not use your reason?
Yusuf Ali We have revealed for you (O men!) a book in which is a Message for you: will ye not then understand?
W. Khan We have revealed a Book to you which is admonition for you. Will you not then understand?
M. Sarwar We have sent a Book, (the Quran), which is an honor for you. Will you then not understand?

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem How many communities of evildoers We have destroyed! How many others We have raised up in their places!
Yusuf Ali How many were the populations We utterly destroyed because of their iniquities, setting up in their places other peoples?
W. Khan How many communities of evil-doers We have destroyed, raising up other people after them.
M. Sarwar How many unjust towns did We destroy and replace them with other nations?

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem When they felt Our might coming upon them, see how they tried to escape it!
Yusuf Ali Yet, when they felt Our Punishment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from it.
W. Khan When they felt Our punishment coming upon them, they began to flee from it.
M. Sarwar When they found Our torment approaching them they started to run away from the town.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem ‘Do not try to escape. Go back to your homes and the pleasure you revelled in: you may be questioned.’
Yusuf Ali Flee not, but return to the good things of this life which were given you, and to your homes in order that ye may be called to account.
W. Khan They were told, ‘Do not try to flee, but return to the comfort and luxuries in which you exulted and to the places where you lived, so that you may be questioned.’
M. Sarwar We told them, "Do not run away. Come back to your luxuries and your houses so that you can be questioned".

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Woe to us! We were wrong!’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Ah! woe to us! We were indeed wrong-doers!"
W. Khan They said, ‘Woe to us! We were indeed wrongdoers,’
M. Sarwar They said, "Woe to us! We have been unjust".

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem and that cry of theirs did not cease until We made them burnt-offstubble.
Yusuf Ali And that cry of theirs ceased not, till We made them as a field that is mown, as ashes silent and quenched.
W. Khan and this they kept repeating until We caused them to become like a field mowed down, and reduced to ashes.
M. Sarwar Such was what they continued to say until We mowed them down and made them completely extinct.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them playfully.
Yusuf Ali Not for (idle) sport did We create the heavens and the earth and all that is between!
W. Khan It was not in play that We created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them.
M. Sarwar We did not create the heavens and the earth just for fun.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem If We had wished for a pastime, We could have found it within Us- if We had wished for any such thing.
Yusuf Ali If it had been Our wish to take (just) a pastime, We should surely have taken it from the things nearest to Us, if We would do (such a thing)!
W. Khan Had We wished to find a pastime, We would surely have found it in that which is with Us, if such had been Our will.
M. Sarwar Had We wanted to play games, We could have certainly done so with things at hand.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem No! We hurl the truth against falsehood, and truth obliterates it- see how falsehood vanishes away! Woe to you [people] for the way you describe God!
Yusuf Ali Nay, We hurl the Truth against falsehood, and it knocks out its brain, and behold, falsehood doth perish! Ah! woe be to you for the (false) things ye ascribe (to Us).
W. Khan We will hurl the truth at falsehood, the falsehood shall be crushed and will disappear. Woe to you for what you utter.
M. Sarwar We bring forward the Truth to crush and destroy falsehood; it is doomed to be banished. Woe to you for your way of thinking about God!

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Everyone in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, and those that are with Him are never too proud to worship Him, nor do they grow weary;
Yusuf Ali To Him belong all (creatures) in the heavens and on earth: Even those who are in His (very) Presence are not too proud to serve Him, nor are they (ever) weary (of His service):
W. Khan To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on the earth and those that are with Him are never too proud to worship Him, nor do they grow weary;
M. Sarwar To Him belongs all those who are in the heavens and the earth. Those who are closer to Him are not too proud to worship Him, nor do they get tired of worshipping.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem they glorify Him tirelessly night and day.
Yusuf Ali They celebrate His praises night and day, nor do they ever flag or intermit.
W. Khan they glorify Him night and day without tiring.
M. Sarwar They glorify Him day and night without fail.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem Have they chosen any gods from the earth who can give life to the dead?
Yusuf Ali Or have they taken (for worship) gods from the earth who can raise (the dead)?
W. Khan Have they taken deities from the earth who can bring the dead to life?
M. Sarwar Have they chosen deities from earth? Can such deities give life to anyone?

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem If there had been in the heavens or earth any gods but Him, both heavens and earth would be in ruins: God, Lord of the Throne, is far above the things they say:
Yusuf Ali If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides Allah, there would have been confusion in both! but glory to Allah, the Lord of the Throne: (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!
W. Khan If there had been in the heavens and on the earth, other deities besides God, both the heavens and earth would be ruined. God, Lord of the throne, is far above that which they ascribe to Him.
M. Sarwar Had there been other deities in the heavens and the earth besides God, both the heavens and the earth would have been destroyed. God, the Lord of the Throne, is too Glorious to be as they think He is.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem He cannot be called to account for anything He does, whereas they will be called to account.
Yusuf Ali He cannot be questioned for His acts, but they will be questioned (for theirs).
W. Khan None shall question Him about His works, but they shall be questioned.
M. Sarwar He will not be questioned about anything He does, but all people will be questioned about their deeds.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem Have they chosen to worship other gods instead of Him? Say, ‘Bring your proof. This is the Scripture for those who are with me and the Scripture for those who went before me.’ But most of them do not recognize the truth, so they pay no heed.
Yusuf Ali Or have they taken for worship (other) gods besides him? Say, "Bring your convincing proof: this is the Message of those with me and the Message of those before me." But most of them know not the Truth, and so turn away.
W. Khan Have they taken other deities besides Him? Say to them, ‘Bring your proofs. This is the reminder of those who are with me and the reminder of those who were before me.’ But most of them do not know the truth, and so they turn away from it.
M. Sarwar Have they chosen other gods besides God? (Muhammad), ask them, "Show the proof (in support of such belief). This is (the Quran) which tells us about the (beliefs of the people) in my time and those who lived before me." Most of them do not know. Moreover, the truth is that they neglect (the question of belief altogether).

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem We never sent any messenger before you [Muhammad] without revealing to him: ‘There is no god but Me, so serve Me.’
Yusuf Ali Not a messenger did We send before thee without this inspiration sent by Us to him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me.
W. Khan We sent all messengers before you with this revelation: ‘There is no deity save Me, so worship Me alone.’
M. Sarwar To all the Messengers that were sent before you We revealed that I am the only God to be worshipped.

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem And they say, ‘The Lord of Mercy has taken offspring for Himself.’ May He be exalted! No! They are only His honoured servants:
Yusuf Ali And they say: "(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten offspring." Glory to Him! they are (but) servants raised to honour.
W. Khan They say, ‘The All Merciful has taken a son!’ Glory be to Him! They are only His honoured servants:
M. Sarwar They said, "The Beneficent God has given birth to a son. He is too Exalted to give birth to a son." (Those whom they think are God's sons) are only His honorable servants.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem they do not speak before He speaks and they act by His command.
Yusuf Ali They speak not before He speaks, and they act (in all things) by His Command.
W. Khan they do not try to speak ahead of Him, and they act at His command.
M. Sarwar These servants do not speak before He speaks. They simply act according to His orders.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot intercede without His permission––indeed they themselves stand in awe of Him.
Yusuf Ali He knows what is before them, and what is behind them, and they offer no intercession except for those who are acceptable, and they stand in awe and reverence of His (Glory).
W. Khan He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot intercede without His permission. Indeed they themselves stand in awe of Him.
M. Sarwar He knows all that is in front of them and all that is behind them. (These servants of God) will not intercede with Him for anyone without His permission and they tremble in awe (before His greatness).

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem If any of them were to claim, ‘I am a god beside Him,’ We would reward them with Hell: this is how We reward evildoers.
Yusuf Ali If any of them should say, "I am a god besides Him", such a one We should reward with Hell: thus do We reward those who do wrong.
W. Khan Whoever of them should say, ‘I am a deity besides Him,’ shall be requited with Hell. Thus do We reward the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar The recompense of those of them who say that they are the Lord instead of God will be hell; thus, do We recompense the unjust ones.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem Are the disbelievers not aware that the heavens and the earth used to be joined together and that We ripped them apart, that We made every living thing from water? Will they not believe?
Yusuf Ali Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?
W. Khan Do not those who deny the truth see that the heavens and the earth were joined together and that We then split them asunder? And that We have made every living thing out of water? Will they still not believe?
M. Sarwar Have the unbelievers not ever considered that the heavens and the earth were one piece and that We tore them apart from one another. From water We have created all living things. Will they then have no faith?

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem And We put firm mountains on the earth, lest it should sway under them, and set broad paths on it, so that they might follow the right direction,
Yusuf Ali And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with them, and We have made therein broad highways (between mountains) for them to pass through: that they may receive Guidance.
W. Khan We set firm mountains upon the earth lest it should sway under them, and We placed therein passages for paths so that they might find their way.
M. Sarwar We placed firm mountains on earth lest it would shake them away. We made wide roads for them so that they might have the right guidance.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem and We made the sky a well-secured canopy- yet from its wonders they turn away.
Yusuf Ali And We have made the heavens as a canopy well guarded: yet do they turn away from the Signs which these things (point to)!
W. Khan We have made the heaven a well-secured canopy; yet still they turn away from Our signs.
M. Sarwar We made the sky above them as a well-guarded ceiling, but they have neglected the evidence (of Our existence) therein.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem It is He who created night and day, the sun and the moon, each floating in its orbit.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its rounded course.
W. Khan It is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each gliding in its orbit.
M. Sarwar It is God who has created the night, the day, the Sun, and Moon and has made them swim in a certain orbit.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem We have not granted everlasting life to any other human being before you either [Muhammad]- if you die, will [the disbelievers] live for ever?
Yusuf Ali We granted not to any man before thee permanent life (here): if then thou shouldst die, would they live permanently?
W. Khan We have not granted everlasting life to any human being before you; then if you [Muhammad] should die, will they live forever?
M. Sarwar We made no mortal before you immortal. Will they become immortal after you die?

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem Every soul is certain to taste death: We test you all through the bad and the good, and to Us you will all return.
Yusuf Ali Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. to Us must ye return.
W. Khan Every soul shall taste death; We test you with both good and evil [circumstances] as a trial. To Us you shall return.
M. Sarwar Every soul has to experience the taste of death. We test you with both hardships and blessings. In the end you will all return to Us.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem When the disbelievers see you, they laugh at you: ‘Is this the one who talks about your gods?’ They reject any talk of the Lord of Mercy.
Yusuf Ali When the Unbelievers see thee, they treat thee not except with ridicule. "Is this," (they say), "the one who talks of your gods?" and they blaspheme at the mention of (Allah) Most Gracious!
W. Khan When those who deny the truth see you, they laugh at you, saying, ‘Is this the one who talks of your deities?’ Yet it is they who deny all mention of the Gracious One.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), whenever the unbelievers see you, they think that you deserve nothing more than to be mocked. They say, "Is it he, (Muhammad), who speaks against your gods?" But they themselves have no faith at all in the Beneficent God.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Man was created hasty: I will show you My signs soon, so do not ask Me to hasten them.
Yusuf Ali Man is a creature of haste: soon (enough) will I show you My Signs; then ye will not ask Me to hasten them!
W. Khan Man is a creature of haste. Soon I will show you My signs, but do not ask Me to hasten them.
M. Sarwar The human being is created hasty. Tell them, "Do not be hasty, for God will soon show you the evidence of His existence".

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem They say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say is true?’
Yusuf Ali They say: "When will this promise come to pass, if ye are telling the truth?"
W. Khan They ask, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say be true?’
M. Sarwar They say, "When shall the Day of Judgment come to pass if you are true in your claim?"

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem If the disbelievers only knew, the time will arrive when they will not be able to ward off the Fire from their faces or their backs, and they will get no help.
Yusuf Ali If only the Unbelievers knew (the time) when they will not be able to ward off the fire from their faces, nor yet from their backs, and (when) no help can reach them!
W. Khan If only those who deny the truth knew the time when they would not be able to ward off the fire neither from their faces nor from their backs. They will not be helped!
M. Sarwar Would that the unbelievers knew that no one would protect their faces and backs against the fire, nor they would be helped.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem It will come upon them suddenly and stupefy them; they will be powerless to push it away; they will not be reprieved.
Yusuf Ali Nay, it may come to them all of a sudden and confound them: no power will they have then to avert it, nor will they (then) get respite.
W. Khan Indeed, it will come upon them suddenly and confound them; and they will not be able to ward it off, nor shall they be reprieved.
M. Sarwar The fire will suddenly strike and confound them. They will not be able to repel it, nor will they be given any respite.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem Messengers before you [Muhammad] were also ridiculed, but those who mocked them were overwhelmed in the end by the very thing they had mocked.
Yusuf Ali Mocked were (many) messenger before thee; But their scoffers were hemmed in by the thing that they mocked.
W. Khan Other messengers have been mocked before you, but those who scoffed were overwhelmed by the very thing they had mocked.
M. Sarwar They mocked the Messengers who were sent before you; thus, the torment which they had ridiculed encompassed them all.

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Who could protect you night and day from the Lord of Mercy?’ Yet they turn away when their Lord is mentioned.
Yusuf Ali Say: "Who can keep you safe by night and by day from (the Wrath of) (Allah) Most Gracious?" Yet they turn away from the mention of their Lord.
W. Khan Say, ‘Who will save you from the wrath of the Most Gracious, by night and by day?’ Yet they turn away from the remembrance of their Lord.
M. Sarwar Ask them, "Who can protect them from (the wrath of) the Beneficent God during the night and day?" Yet they are neglectful about their Lord.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem Do they have gods who can defend them against Us? Their gods have no power to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us.
Yusuf Ali Or have they gods that can guard them from Us? They have no power to aid themselves, nor can they be defended from Us.
W. Khan Do they have other deities who can defend them against Us? They cannot even help themselves, neither can they be aided against Us.
M. Sarwar Can their gods protect them against Us? Their gods have no power even to help themselves, nor are they safe from Our retribution.

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem We have allowed these sinners and their forefathers to enjoy life for a long time. But do they not see how We are shrinking their borders? Is it they who will prevail?
Yusuf Ali Nay, We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them; See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will win?
W. Khan Yet We bestowed the good things [of life] upon their fathers for a great length of time. But do they not see how We are shrinking their borders? Is it they who will prevail?
M. Sarwar We have been providing these men and their fathers with the means of enjoyment for a long time. Have they not ever considered that We populated the earth and then caused many of the inhabitants to pass away? Can they have any success (in their wickedness)?

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘I warn you only through the Revelation.’ The deaf will not hear the warning call,
Yusuf Ali Say, "I do but warn you according to revelation": But the deaf will not hear the call, (even) when they are warned!
W. Khan Say, ‘I warn you only through the Revelation.’ But the deaf can hear nothing when they are warned,
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "I am warning you by revelation alone." The deaf do not hear any call when they are warned.

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem yet if a mere breath of your Lord’s punishment touches them, they will be sure to cry, ‘Woe to us! We were wrong!’
Yusuf Ali If but a breath of the Wrath of thy Lord do touch them, they will then say, "Woe to us! we did wrong indeed!"
W. Khan yet if even a breath of your Lord’s punishment touched them, they would say, ‘Woe to us! We were indeed wrongdoers.’
M. Sarwar If a blast of the torment of your Lord strikes them, they will say, "Woe to us! We have been unjust people."

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem We will set up scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection so that no one can be wronged in the least, and if there should be even the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it out- We take excellent account.
Yusuf Ali We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgment, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least, and if there be (no more than) the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and enough are We to take account.
W. Khan We shall set up scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection, so that no soul can be in the least wronged. Actions as small as a grain of mustard seed shall be weighed. We are sufficient as a reckoner.
M. Sarwar We shall maintain proper justice on the Day of Judgment. No soul will be wronged the least. For a deed even as small as a mustard seed one will duly be recompensed. We are efficient in maintaining the account.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem We gave Moses and Aaron [the Scripture] that distinguishes right from wrong, a light and a reminder for those who are mindful of God,
Yusuf Ali In the past We granted to Moses and Aaron the criterion (for judgment), and a Light and a Message for those who would do right,-
W. Khan We gave Moses and Aaron the criterion of right and wrong and a light and reminder for the righteous,
M. Sarwar To Moses and Aaron We granted the criteria of discerning right from wrong, and We gave them the light and a reminder to the pious ones

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem those who stand in awe of their Lord, though He is unseen, and who fear the Hour.
Yusuf Ali Those who fear their Lord in their most secret thoughts, and who hold the Hour (of Judgment) in awe.
W. Khan those who fear their Lord in the unseen, also dread the Hour of Judgement.
M. Sarwar who fear their unseen Lord and are anxious about the Day of Judgment.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem This [Quran] too is a blessed message We have sent down- are you [people] going to deny it?
Yusuf Ali And this is a blessed Message which We have sent down: will ye then reject it?
W. Khan This is a blessed reminder that We have revealed to you. Will you then reject it?
M. Sarwar This (Quran) which We have revealed is a blessed reminder. Will you then deny it?

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem Long ago We bestowed right judgement on Abraham and We knew him well.
Yusuf Ali We bestowed aforetime on Abraham his rectitude of conduct, and well were We acquainted with him.
W. Khan Before this We gave Abraham his guidance. We knew him well.
M. Sarwar To Abraham We gave the right guidance and We knew him very well.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem He said to his father and his people, ‘What are these images to which you are so devoted?’
Yusuf Ali Behold! he said to his father and his people, "What are these images, to which ye are (so assiduously) devoted?"
W. Khan When he asked his father and his people, ‘What are these images to which you are so devoted?’
M. Sarwar Abraham asked his father and his people, "What are these statues which you worship?"

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem They replied, ‘We found our fathers worshipping them.’
Yusuf Ali They said, "We found our fathers worshipping them."
W. Khan They replied, ‘We found our fathers worshipping them.’
M. Sarwar They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them".

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘You and your fathers have clearly gone astray.’
Yusuf Ali He said, "Indeed ye have been in manifest error - ye and your fathers."
W. Khan Abraham said, ‘Indeed, you and your fathers have been clearly misguided.’
M. Sarwar He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error."

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem They asked, ‘Have you brought us the truth or are you just playing about?’
Yusuf Ali They said, "Have you brought us the Truth, or are you one of those who jest?"
W. Khan They said, ‘Have you brought us the truth or are you jesting?’
M. Sarwar They exclaimed, "Have you brought the Truth or are you joking?"

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘Listen! Your true Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, He who created them, and I am a witness to this.
Yusuf Ali He said, "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, He Who created them (from nothing): and I am a witness to this (Truth).
W. Khan Abraham replied, ‘Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them, and I bear witness to that.
M. Sarwar He said, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was He who created them and I testify to this fact".

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem By God I shall certainly plot against your idols as soon as you have turned your backs!’
Yusuf Ali "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs"..
W. Khan By the Lord, I will devise a plan against your deities after you have gone away and turned your backs!’
M. Sarwar Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away."

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem He broke them all into pieces, but left the biggest one for them to return to.
Yusuf Ali So he broke them to pieces, (all) but the biggest of them, that they might turn (and address themselves) to it.
W. Khan He broke them all into pieces, except for the biggest one of them, so that they might return to it [for enquiry].
M. Sarwar He broke all the idols into pieces, except the biggest among them so that perhaps people would refer to it.

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Who has done this to our gods? How wicked he must be!’
Yusuf Ali They said, "Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!"
W. Khan ‘Who has done this to our deities? He must be a wrongdoer.’
M. Sarwar (When the people came to the temple and saw the broken idols) they asked each other, "Who has done this to our gods? He certainly is an unjust person".

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem Some said, ‘We heard a youth called Abraham talking about them.’
Yusuf Ali They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham."
W. Khan Some said, ‘We heard a young man, called Abraham, talking about them.’
M. Sarwar Some of them said, "We heard a youth called Abraham speaking against the idols".

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Bring him before the eyes of the people, so that they may witness [his trial].’
Yusuf Ali They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness."
W. Khan They said, ‘Then bring him here in the sight of all the people, so that they may act as witnesses.’
M. Sarwar Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols."

Verse 62
