Yusuf Ali The believers must (eventually) win through,-
W. Khan Successful indeed are the believers;
M. Sarwar Triumphant indeed are the believers,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem Those who pray humbly,
Yusuf Ali Those who humble themselves in their prayers;
W. Khan those who are humble in their prayer;
M. Sarwar who are submissive to God in their prayers,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem who shun idle talk,
Yusuf Ali Who avoid vain talk;
W. Khan those who turn away from all that is frivolous;
M. Sarwar who avoid impious talks,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem who pay the prescribed alms,
Yusuf Ali Who are active in deeds of charity;
W. Khan those who pay the zakat;
M. Sarwar pay their religious tax

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem who guard their chastity
Yusuf Ali Who abstain from sex,
W. Khan those who safeguard their chastity
M. Sarwar and restrain their carnal desires

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem except with their spouses or their slaves––with these they are not to blame,
Yusuf Ali Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
W. Khan except with their wives, and what their right hands possess— for then they are free from blame,
M. Sarwar except with their spouses and slave-girls. The practice of carnal relations is lawful with them.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem but anyone who seeks more than this is exceeding the limits––
Yusuf Ali But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;-
W. Khan but those who seek to go beyond that are transgressors—
M. Sarwar Those who desire to go beyond such limits they commit transgression,

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem who are faithful to their trusts and pledges
Yusuf Ali Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants;
W. Khan those who are faithful to their trusts and promises;
M. Sarwar those who are true to their trust,

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem and who keep up their prayers,
Yusuf Ali And who (strictly) guard their prayers;-
W. Khan and those who attend to their prayers;
M. Sarwar to their promise,

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem will rightly be given
Yusuf Ali These will be the heirs,
W. Khan these are the heirs of Paradise
M. Sarwar and who are steadfast in their prayer.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem Paradise as their own, there to remain.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem We created man from an essence of clay,
Yusuf Ali Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay);
W. Khan We created man from an essence of clay,
M. Sarwar We have created the human being from an extract of clay

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a safe place,
Yusuf Ali Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed;
W. Khan then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a safe place,
M. Sarwar which was then turned into a living germ and placed in safe depository.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem then We made that drop into a clinging form, and We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms––glory be to God, the best of creators!––
Yusuf Ali Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!
W. Khan then We developed that drop into a clinging form, and We developed that form into a lump of flesh, and We developed that lump into bones, and clothed the bones with flesh. Then We brought him into being as a new creation—glory be to God, the best of creators—
M. Sarwar The living germ, then, was turned into a shapeless lump of flesh from which bones were formed. The bones, then, were covered with flesh. At this stage, We caused it to become another creature. All blessings belong to God, the best Creator.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem then you will die
Yusuf Ali After that, at length ye will die
W. Khan after this you shall surely die.
M. Sarwar Thereafter you will certainly die

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem and then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be raised up again.
Yusuf Ali Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up.
W. Khan Then you will be raised up again on the Resurrection Day.
M. Sarwar and you will be brought back to life again on the Day of Resurrection.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem We created seven levels above you: We are never unmindful of Our creation.
Yusuf Ali And We have made, above you, seven tracts; and We are never unmindful of (our) Creation.
W. Khan We have created seven paths above you; We have never been unmindful of Our creation.
M. Sarwar We have created seven heavens above you and have never been neglectful to Our Creation.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem We sent water down from the sky in due measure and lodged it in the earth––We have the power to take it all away if We so wish––
Yusuf Ali And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).
W. Khan We sent down water from the sky in due measure and lodged it in the earth—but if We please, We have the power to take it away—
M. Sarwar We have sent a measure of water from the sky to stay on earth and We have the power to take it away.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem with it We produced for you gardens of date palms and vines, with many fruits there for you to eat,
Yusuf Ali With it We grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines: in them have ye abundant fruits: and of them ye eat (and have enjoyment),-
W. Khan We have produced palm-groves and vineyards for you, in which there are abundant fruits for you; and you eat these,
M. Sarwar We have established for you gardens of palm trees and vineyards with this water with many fruits for you to consume.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem and a tree, growing out of Mount Sinai, that produces oil and seasoning for your food.
Yusuf Ali Also a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food.
W. Khan also a tree growing on Mount Sinai which produces oil and a condiment for those who eat it.
M. Sarwar We have also created for you the tree that grows on Mount Sinai which produces oil and relish for those who use it.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem There is a lesson for you in livestock: We produce milk for you to drink from their bellies. And they have many other benefits: you eat them
Yusuf Ali And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: from within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat;
W. Khan You have a lesson in livestock. We provide you with drink from what is in their bellies, and you have many other benefits from them; some of them you eat,
M. Sarwar There is a lesson for you concerning cattle. We provide you with drink from their bellies and many other benefits. You can consume them as meat.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem and you ride on them, as you do in ships.
Yusuf Ali And on them, as well as in ships, ye ride.
W. Khan and you ride on them as you do in ships.
M. Sarwar You are carried by the animals on land and by the ships in the sea.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem We sent Noah to his people. He said, ‘My people, serve God, for He is your only god. Will you not heed Him?’
Yusuf Ali (Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Noah to his people: He said, "O my people! worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"
W. Khan We sent Noah to his people, and he said, ‘My people, worship God; you have no other deity except Him. Will you not fear Him?’
M. Sarwar We sent Noah to his people who said, "My people, worship God for He is your only Lord. Will you then not have fear of Him?"

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem But the leading disbelievers among his people said, ‘He is merely a mortal like you, trying to gain some superiority over you. God would have sent down angels if He had wished; besides, we never heard of anything like this from our forefathers.
Yusuf Ali The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."
W. Khan The leaders of his people who denied the truth, said, ‘He is only a human being like yourselves who wants to make himself superior to you. If God had wished, He would have sent down angels. We never heard about this from our forefathers.
M. Sarwar The chiefs of the unbelievers said to the others, "He is a mere mortal like you. He wants only to be superior to you. Had God wanted He would have sent the angels (instead of him). We have never heard from our fathers anything like what he says.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem He is just a madman, so let’s wait and see what happens to him.’
Yusuf Ali (And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience) with him for a time."
W. Khan He is only a madman, so, as far as he is concerned wait for a while.’
M. Sarwar He is only an insane person. Wait for some time. Perhaps he will come to his senses."

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Noah said, ‘My Lord, help me! They call me a liar,’
Yusuf Ali (Noah) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood!"
W. Khan Noah said, ‘My Lord, help me! for they have rejected me,’
M. Sarwar Noah prayed, "Lord, help me; they have called me a liar".

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem and so We revealed to him: ‘Build the Ark under Our watchful eye and according to Our revelation. When Our command comes and water gushes up out of the earth,take pairs of every species on board, and your family, except for those on whom the sentence has already been passed- do not plead with me for the evildoers: they will be drowned-
Yusuf Ali So We inspired him (with this message): "Construct the Ark within Our sight and under Our guidance: then when comes Our Command, and the fountains of the earth gush forth, take thou on board pairs of every species, male and female, and thy family- except those of them against whom the Word has already gone forth: And address Me not in favour of the wrong-doers; for they shall be drowned (in the Flood).
W. Khan then We revealed Our will to him: ‘Build the Ark under Our watchful eye according to Our instructions. When Our command comes, and waters gush up out of the earth, take on board pairs of every species and members of your household, except for any of them on whom sentence has already been passed—do not plead with Me for those who have done wrong: they shall be drowned.
M. Sarwar We inspired him, saying, "Build the Ark before Our eyes and by the instruction of Our revelation. When our decree comes to pass and water comes forth from the Oven, embark in the Ark with a pair of every kind of animals and your family except those already doomed (to perish). Do not plead with Me for the unjust; they will be drowned."

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem and when you and your companions are settled on the Ark, say, “Praise be to God, who delivered us from the wicked people,”
Yusuf Ali And when thou hast embarked on the Ark - thou and those with thee,- say: "Praise be to Allah, Who has saved us from the people who do wrong."
W. Khan When you and all your followers have settled in the Ark, say, “Praise be to God who has delivered us from a wicked people,”
M. Sarwar When all of you settle in the Ark, say, "Only God Who has saved us from the unjust people deserves all praise".

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem and say, “My Lord, let me land with Your blessing: it is You who provide the best landings”.’
Yusuf Ali And say: "O my Lord! enable me to disembark with thy blessing: for Thou art the Best to enable (us) to disembark."
W. Khan and say, “My Lord, let me land with Your blessing in a blessed landing place. You alone can provide the best landings”.’
M. Sarwar Say, "Lord, grant us a blessed landing from the Ark; You are the One who provides the safest landing".

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem There are signs in all this: We have always put [people] to the test.
Yusuf Ali Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try (men).
W. Khan Surely there are clear signs in that. In this way We put people to the test.
M. Sarwar In this story there is enough evidence (of the Truth); thus do We try (mankind)

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Then We raised another generation after them,
Yusuf Ali Then We raised after them another generation.
W. Khan Then We raised another generation after them,
M. Sarwar We brought another generation into existence after the people of Noah.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem and sent one of their own as a messenger: ‘Serve God, for He is your only god. Will you not heed Him?’
Yusuf Ali And We sent to them a messenger from among themselves, (saying), "Worship Allah! ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"
W. Khan and sent a messenger to them from among themselves: ‘Worship God alone. You have no deity other than Him. Will you not then fear God?’
M. Sarwar We sent to them a Messenger from among their own people who told them, "Worship God; He is your only Lord. Will you then not have fear of Him?"

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem But the leading disbelievers among his people, who denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, to whom We had granted ease and plenty in this life, said, ‘He is just a mortal like you- he eats what you eat and drinks what you drink-
Yusuf Ali And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of what ye drink.
W. Khan But the leaders of his people who denied the truth and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, because We had granted them ease and plenty in their worldly life, said, ‘This is only a human being like yourselves—he eats what you eat, and drinks what you drink—
M. Sarwar A group of his people who disbelieved him and had called the Day of Judgment a lie and whom We had made prosperous in this life, said, "He is a mere mortal like you. He eats and drinks as you do.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem and you will really be losers if you obey a mortal like yourselves.
Yusuf Ali "If ye obey a man like yourselves, behold, it is certain ye will be lost.
W. Khan if you obey a human being just like yourselves, then you will surely be lost.
M. Sarwar If you follow a mortal like yourselves you will certainly be lost.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem How can he promise you that after you die and become dust and bones you will be brought out alive?
Yusuf Ali "Does he promise that when ye die and become dust and bones, ye shall be brought forth (again)?
W. Khan Does he promise you that when you die and have become dust and bones, that you will be brought forth again?
M. Sarwar Does he promise you that after you die and become dust and bones you will be brought back to life again?

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem What you are promised is very farfetched.
Yusuf Ali "Far, very far is that which ye are promised!
W. Khan What you are promised is indeed farfetched.
M. Sarwar Such a promise will never come true.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem There is only the life of this world: we die, we live, but we will never be resurrected.
Yusuf Ali "There is nothing but our life in this world! We shall die and we live! But we shall never be raised up again!
W. Khan There exists only our present life: we die and we live [but once], and shall never be raised up again.
M. Sarwar This is our only life. We live and will die but we will never be brought back to life again.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem He is just a man making lies up about God. We will never believe in him.’
Yusuf Ali "He is only a man who invents a lie against Allah, but we are not the ones to believe in him!"
W. Khan He is only a man who has invented a lie about God, and we are not going to believe him!’
M. Sarwar He is only a man who invents lies against God, so have no faith in him".

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem The prophet said, ‘My Lord, help me! They call me a liar,’
Yusuf Ali (The prophet) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood."
W. Khan The messenger said, ‘My Lord, help me, for they have rejected me.’
M. Sarwar The Messenger prayed, "Lord, help me; they have called me a liar".

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem and so God said, ‘Soon they will be filled with regret.’
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "In but a little while, they are sure to be sorry!"
W. Khan God said, ‘Before long they will be filled with regret.’
M. Sarwar God replied, "After a very short time they will certainly regret for their deeds."

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem The blast justly struck them and We swept them away like scum. Away with the evildoers!
Yusuf Ali Then the Blast overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead leaves (floating on the stream of Time)! So away with the people who do wrong!
W. Khan The blast justly struck them and We reduced them to rubble. Away with such wicked people!
M. Sarwar A blast struck them for a just cause, and We made them look like withered leaves. God keeps the unjust people away from His mercy.

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem We raised other generations after them-
Yusuf Ali Then We raised after them other generations.
W. Khan Then We raised up other generations after them—
M. Sarwar After them We brought another generation into existence.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem no community can advance or delay its time-
Yusuf Ali No people can hasten their term, nor can they delay (it).
W. Khan no community can advance or postpone its appointed time—
M. Sarwar Every nation has an appointed life span.

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem and We sent Our messengers in succession: whenever a messenger came to a community they invariably called him a liar, so We destroyed them one after the other and made them into cautionary tales. Away with the disbelievers!
Yusuf Ali Then sent We our messengers in succession: every time there came to a people their messenger, they accused him of falsehood: so We made them follow each other (in punishment): We made them as a tale (that is told): So away with a people that will not believe!
W. Khan then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time their messenger came to a people, they rejected him. So We destroyed them one after the other, and let them become mere tales. So away with the people who will not believe!
M. Sarwar We sent Our messengers one after the other but whenever a Messenger would come to a nation, its people would call him a liar and We would destroy one nation after the other, thus, only their stories were left behind them. God keeps the unbelievers far away from His Mercy.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our signs and clear authority,
Yusuf Ali Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our Signs and authority manifest,
W. Khan Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and clear authority
M. Sarwar Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our miracles and clear authority

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem to Pharaoh and his prominent leaders, but they responded with arrogance: they were a haughty people.
Yusuf Ali To Pharaoh and his Chiefs: But these behaved insolently: they were an arrogant people.
W. Khan to Pharaoh and his courtiers, but they behaved insolently, for they were an arrogant people.
M. Sarwar to the Pharaoh and his nobles. But they behaved proudly and thought themselves superior people.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Are we to believe in two mortals like us? And their people are our servants?’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves? And their people are subject to us!"
W. Khan They said, ‘Are we to believe in two human beings like ourselves, while their people are subject to us?’
M. Sarwar They said, "Should we believe in two mere mortals who are like ourselves and whose people are our slaves?"

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem and so they called them both liars: they became another ruined people.
Yusuf Ali So they accused them of falsehood, and they became of those who were destroyed.
W. Khan So they rejected them both, and became those who were destroyed.
M. Sarwar They called them liars and consequently were destroyed.

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem We gave Moses the Scripture, so that they might be rightly guided.
Yusuf Ali And We gave Moses the Book, in order that they might receive guidance.
W. Khan We gave Moses the Book so that they might be guided.
M. Sarwar We gave the Book to Moses so that perhaps they may have guidance.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign; We gave them shelter on a peaceful hillside with flowing water.
Yusuf Ali And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground, affording rest and security and furnished with springs.
W. Khan We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and gave them shelter on a peaceful hillside watered by a fresh spring.
M. Sarwar We made the son of Mary and his mother a miracle and settled them on a high land, quite secure and watered by a spring.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem Messengers, eat good things and do good deeds: I am well aware of what you do.
Yusuf Ali O ye messengers! enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I am well-acquainted with (all) that ye do.
W. Khan Messengers, eat what is wholesome and do good deeds: I am well aware of what you do.
M. Sarwar I told them, "Messengers, eat from the pure things and act righteously; I know all that you do.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem This community of yours is one- and I am your Lord: be mindful of Me-
Yusuf Ali And verily this Brotherhood of yours is a single Brotherhood, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (and no other).
W. Khan Your religion is but one religion—and I am your only Lord, therefore, fear Me.
M. Sarwar Your religion is one and I am your Lord. Have fear of Me".

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem but they have split their community into sects, each rejoicing in their own.
Yusuf Ali But people have cut off their affair (of unity), between them, into sects: each party rejoices in that which is with itself.
W. Khan Yet they divided themselves into factions, each rejoicing in what they had.
M. Sarwar The people divided themselves into many sects, each with their own book and each happy with whatever they had.

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem So [Muhammad] leave them for a while steeped [in their ignorance].
Yusuf Ali But leave them in their confused ignorance for a time.
W. Khan So leave them in their bewilderment for a while.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), leave them alone in their dark ignorance for an appointed time.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem Do they reckon that, by giving them wealth and sons,
Yusuf Ali Do they think that because We have granted them abundance of wealth and sons,
W. Khan Do they imagine that the wealth and children We have provided
M. Sarwar Do they think that We are helping them by giving them children and property?

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem We race to give them good things? They really have no idea!
Yusuf Ali We would hasten them on in every good? Nay, they do not understand.
W. Khan have no other purpose except to help them in acquiring material benefits? No indeed. But they do not understand.
M. Sarwar We provide them with the means of competing with each other in virtuous deeds, but they do not realize this.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem Those who stand in awe of their Lord,
Yusuf Ali Verily those who live in awe for fear of their Lord;
W. Khan Those who tremble with fear of their Lord;
M. Sarwar Only those who are, out of fear of Him, humble before their Lord,

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem who believe in His messages,
Yusuf Ali Those who believe in the Signs of their Lord;
W. Khan and believe in His messages
M. Sarwar who believe in the revelations of their Lord,

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem who do not ascribe partners to Him,
Yusuf Ali Those who join not (in worship) partners with their Lord;
W. Khan and do not ascribe partners to Him;
M. Sarwar who consider nothing equal to their Lord,

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem who always give with hearts that tremble at the thought that they must return to Him,
Yusuf Ali And those who dispense their charity with their hearts full of fear, because they will return to their Lord;-
W. Khan and those who give to others what has been bestowed upon them with their hearts trembling at the thought that they must return to their Lord;
M. Sarwar who spend their property for the cause of God, and whose hearts are afraid of their return

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem are the ones who race toward good things, and they will be the first to get them.
Yusuf Ali It is these who hasten in every good work, and these who are foremost in them.
W. Khan it is they who vie with one another in doing good works and shall be the foremost in doing so.
M. Sarwar to God, these are the ones who really compete with each other in virtuous deeds and are the foremost ones in the task.

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear- We have a Record that tells the truth- they will not be wronged.
Yusuf Ali On no soul do We place a burden greater than it can bear: before Us is a record which clearly shows the truth: they will never be wronged.
W. Khan We charge no soul with more than it can bear. We have a record which clearly shows the truth and they will not be wronged.
M. Sarwar We do not impose on any soul what is beyond its capacity. We have the Book which speaks the truth and no injustice will be done to it.

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem But the disbelievers’ hearts are steeped [in ignorance of ] all this; and there are other things besides this that they do.
Yusuf Ali But their hearts are in confused ignorance of this; and there are, besides that, deeds of theirs, which they will (continue) to do,-
W. Khan But their hearts are heedless of this. Moreover, there are other deeds besides this which they do.
M. Sarwar In fact, the hearts of the unbelievers are in the dark because of their ignorance of real virtue; they act against it.

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem When We bring Our punishment on those corrupted with wealth, they will cry for help:
Yusuf Ali Until, when We seize in Punishment those of them who received the good things of this world, behold, they will groan in supplication!
W. Khan But then when We seize the affluent among them, they will cry out for help.
M. Sarwar But when We will strike with torment those (unbelievers) who are rich, they will start to cry for help.

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem ‘Do not cry out today: you will get no help from Us.
Yusuf Ali (It will be said): "Groan not in supplication this day: for ye shall certainly not be helped by Us.
W. Khan Do not cry out for help this day, for surely you shall not be helped by Us.
M. Sarwar We shall tell them, "Do not cry for help on this day; you will receive none from Us".

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem Time and time again My messages were recited to you, but you turned arrogantly on your heels,
Yusuf Ali "My Signs used to be rehearsed to you, but ye used to turn back on your heels-
W. Khan My revelations were recited to you, but you turned your backs
M. Sarwar Our revelations had certainly been recited to you, but you turned your backs to them

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem and spent the evening making fun of [the Quran].’
Yusuf Ali "In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'an), like one telling fables by night."
W. Khan in arrogance, as if you were abandoning a story-teller.
M. Sarwar and arrogantly mocked and reviled them.

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem Have they not contemplated the Word of God? Has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?
Yusuf Ali Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old?
W. Khan Have they not pondered over the word of God? Has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?
M. Sarwar Was it that you did not give any thought to it (the Quran)? Was it different from what was revealed to your fathers?

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem Do they not recognize their Messenger? So why do they reject him?
Yusuf Ali Or do they not recognise their Messenger, that they deny him?
W. Khan Or do they not recognize their Messenger, and so deny him?
M. Sarwar Or did you not recognize your Messenger and, thus, denied him (Muhammad)

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem Why do they say he is possessed? He has brought them the truth and most of them hate it,
Yusuf Ali Or do they say, "He is possessed"? Nay, he has brought them the Truth, but most of them hate the Truth.
W. Khan Do they say he is possessed? Rather he has brought them the truth, but most of them are averse to the truth.
M. Sarwar or you said that he is possessed by satan? In fact, he has brought you the truth, but most of you dislike it.

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem but if the truth were in accordance with their desires, the heavens, the earth, and everyone in them would disintegrate. We have brought them their Reminder and they turn away from it.
Yusuf Ali If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition.
W. Khan If truth had followed their whims and desires, heavens and earth and all that lives in them would have been brought to ruin. Rather We have brought them their Reminder. Yet they keep avoiding their Reminder.
M. Sarwar Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth and all that is in them would have been destroyed. We sent them the Quran but they ignored it.

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem Do you [Prophet] ask them for any payment? Your Lord’s is the best payment: He is the Best of Providers.
Yusuf Ali Or is it that thou askest them for some recompense? But the recompense of thy Lord is best: He is the Best of those who give sustenance.
W. Khan Or are you asking them for any reward? But the reward of your Lord is the best, for He is the Best of Providers,
M. Sarwar (Do they disbelieve because) you asked them for payment? The reward that you will receive from your Lord is the best. He is the best Provider.

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem You call them to a straight path
Yusuf Ali But verily thou callest them to the Straight Way;
W. Khan and, most surely, you are calling them to a straight path.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), you certainly have called them to the right path,

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem and those who do not believe in the Hereafter turn away from that path.
Yusuf Ali And verily those who believe not in the Hereafter are deviating from that Way.
W. Khan But those who do not believe in the Hereafter have indeed deviated from that path.
M. Sarwar but those who disbelieve the life hereafter deviate from the right path.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem Even if We were to show them mercy and relieve them of distress, they would blindly persist in their transgression.
Yusuf Ali If We had mercy on them and removed the distress which is on them, they would obstinately persist in their transgression, wandering in distraction to and fro.

Abdel Haleem it is He who gives life and death; the alternation of night and day depends on Him; will you not use your minds?

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem God has never had a child. Nor is there any god beside Him- if there were, each god would have taken his creation aside and tried to overcome the others. May God be exalted above what they describe!
Yusuf Ali No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him: (if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have lorded it over others! Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the (sort of) things they attribute to Him!
W. Khan God has not taken to Himself a son, nor is there any other deity besides Him; otherwise, each god would have walked away with what he had created. They would surely have tried to overcome one another. Glory be to God, above all that they ascribe to Him.
M. Sarwar God has never given birth to a son and there is no other god besides Him. If there were, each god would have taken away his creatures and claimed superiority over the others. God is too exalted to be as they believe Him to be.

Abdel Haleem so as to make amends for the things I neglected.’ Never! This will not go beyond his words: a barrier stands behind such people until the very Day they are resurrected.
Yusuf Ali "In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected." - "By no means! It is but a word he says."- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up.
W. Khan so that I may do good works in the world I have left behind.’ Never! It is indeed but a meaningless word that he utters. A barrier shall stand behind such people till the Day they are raised up again.
M. Sarwar so that perhaps I shall act righteously for the rest of my life." Although he will say so but his wish will never come true. After death they will be behind a barrier until the day of their resurrection.
