Chapter 26: al-Shuʿarāʾ — The Poets

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Ta Sin Mim
Yusuf Ali Ta. Sin. Mim.
W. Khan Ta Sin Mim
M. Sarwar Ta. Sin. Mim.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem These are the verses of the Scripture that makes things clear:
Yusuf Ali These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.
W. Khan These are the verses of the Book that makes things clear.
M. Sarwar These are the verses of the illustrious Book.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], are you going to worry yourself to death because they will not believe?
Yusuf Ali It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.
W. Khan It may be that you will destroy yourself with grief because they will not believe.
M. Sarwar You will perhaps kill yourself with anguish because they are not accepting the faith.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem If We had wished, We could have sent them down a sign from heaven, at which their necks would stay bowed in utter humility.
Yusuf Ali If (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.
W. Khan But if We had so willed, We could have sent down to them a sign from the heavens so that their heads would be bowed down before it in utter humility.
M. Sarwar Had We wanted, We would have sent them a miracle from the sky to make their heads hang down in submission.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Whenever they are brought a new revelation from the Lord of Mercy, they turn away:
Yusuf Ali But there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.
W. Khan Whenever there comes to them any fresh warning from the Merciful, they always turn their backs on it:
M. Sarwar Whenever a new message comes to them from the Beneficent God, they turn away from it.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem they deny it, but the truth of what they scorned will soon hit them.
Yusuf Ali They have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!
W. Khan they have indeed rejected the message. But the truth of what they laughed to scorn will dawn upon them before long.
M. Sarwar They have called (our revelation) lies. They will soon learn the consequences of what they mocked.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Do they not see the earth, and what noble kinds of thing We grow in it?
Yusuf Ali Do they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?
W. Khan Do they not see the earth, and what beneficial kinds of things We have caused to grow in it?
M. Sarwar Have they not seen the earth in which We have made gracious plants grow?

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan Surely in this there is a sign, yet most of them would not believe:
M. Sarwar In this there is, certainly, evidence (of the Truth). But most of them have no faith.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan truly, your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord is the Majestic and the All-merciful.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Your Lord called to Moses: ‘Go to those wrongdoers,
Yusuf Ali Behold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity,-
W. Khan When your Lord called out to Moses, saying, ‘Go to the wrongdoing people,
M. Sarwar When Your Lord told Moses to go to the unjust people of the Pharaoh

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem the people of Pharaoh. Will they not take heed?’
Yusuf Ali "The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"
W. Khan the people of Pharaoh, will they not fear God?
M. Sarwar and ask them, "Why do you not fear God?"

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘My Lord, I fear they will call me a liar,
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:
W. Khan Moses replied, ‘My Lord, I fear they will reject me,
M. Sarwar He replied, "Lord, I am afraid that they will call me a liar.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem and I will feel stressed and tongue-tied, so send Aaron too;
Yusuf Ali "My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.
W. Khan and ‘my breast is straitened and my tongue is not fluent; so send Aaron as well;
M. Sarwar I feel nervous and my tongue is not fluent, so send Aaron with me.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem besides, they have a chargeagainst me, and I fear they may kill me.’
Yusuf Ali "And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."
W. Khan besides, they accuse me of a crime, and I fear that they may put me to death.’
M. Sarwar They have charged me [with a crime] for which I am afraid they will kill me."

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem God said, ‘No [they will not]. Go, both of you, with Our signs––We shall be with you, listen-ing.
Yusuf Ali Allah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).
W. Khan God said, ‘Indeed not; go both of you with Our signs, We shall be with you, listening [to your call].
M. Sarwar The Lord said, "Have no fear, both of you go with Our miracles. We shall closely listen to you."

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Go, both of you, to Pharaoh and say, “We bring a message from the Lord of the Worlds:
Yusuf Ali "So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;
W. Khan Go to Pharaoh, both of you, and say, “We are messengers from the Lord of the Worlds:
M. Sarwar They came to the Pharaoh and said, "We are the Messengerss of the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem let the Children of Israel leave with us.” ’
Yusuf Ali "'Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'"
W. Khan let the Children of Israel go with us!”’
M. Sarwar Send the Israelites with us".

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh said, ‘Did we not bring you up as a child among us? Did you not stay with us for many years?
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?
W. Khan Pharaoh said to Moses, ‘Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you spent several years of your life with us.
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh said, "Did we not bring you up in our home as an infant and did you not live with us for many years

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem And then you committed that crime of yours: you were so ungrateful.’
Yusuf Ali "And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"
W. Khan Yet you committed the deed you did, surely you are one of the ingrates.’
M. Sarwar and you did the deed which you did. You are certainly ungrateful."

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem Moses replied, ‘I was misguided when I did it
Yusuf Ali Moses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.
W. Khan Moses replied, ‘I did that when I was one of the misguided,
M. Sarwar Moses said, "I did do it and I made a mistake.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem and I fled from you in fear; later my Lord gave me wisdom and made me one of His messengers.
Yusuf Ali "So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.
W. Khan and I fled from you because I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me one of the messengers.
M. Sarwar Then I ran away from you in fear, but my Lord granted me the law and has appointed me as a Messenger.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem And is this- that you have enslaved the Children of Israel- the favour with which you reproach me?’
Yusuf Ali "And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"
W. Khan And this is the favour with which you taunt me—that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?’
M. Sarwar And this is the favor with which you oblige me: You have made the Israelites your slaves.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh asked, ‘What is this “Lord of the Worlds”?’
Yusuf Ali Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"
W. Khan Pharaoh said, ‘What is this: Lord of the Universe?’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh asked, "Who is the Lord of the Universe?"

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem Moses replied, ‘He is the Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between them. If you would only have faith!’
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."
W. Khan Moses said, ‘Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would be convinced.’
M. Sarwar Moses replied, "The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you want to be certain".

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh said to those present, ‘Do you hear what he says?’
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"
W. Khan Pharaoh said to those around him, ‘Did you hear?’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh said to the people around him, "Did you hear that?"

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.’
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"
W. Khan Moses went on, ‘He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.’
M. Sarwar Moses continued, "He is the Lord and the Lord of your forefathers."

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh said, ‘This messenger who has been sent to you is truly possessed.’
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"
W. Khan Pharaoh said, ‘This messenger who has been sent to you is surely possessed!’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh said, "The Messengers who has been sent to you is certainly insane".

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Moses continued, ‘Lord of the East and West and everything between them. If you would only use your reason!’
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"
W. Khan Moses said, ‘He is the Lord of the East and the West, and all that lies between them, if only you could understand.’
M. Sarwar Moses continued, "He is the Lord of the East and West and all that is between them, if only you would think".

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem But Pharaoh said [to him], ‘If you take any god other than me, I will throw you into prison,’
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"
W. Khan Pharaoh said, ‘If you take any deity other than myself, I will throw you into prison,’
M. Sarwar Pharaoh said, "If you put forward any god other than me, I will surely put you in prison".

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem and Moses asked, ‘Even if I show you something convincing?’
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"
W. Khan and Moses asked, ‘Even if I show you a clear sign?’
M. Sarwar Moses asked, "What if I were to bring you clear proof (of the existence of God)?"

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem ‘Show it then,’ said Pharaoh, ‘if you are telling the truth.’
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!"
W. Khan Pharaoh said, ‘Show it then, if you are telling the truth!’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh replied, "Bring it, if you are telling the truth."

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem So Moses threw down his staff and- lo and behold!- it became a snake for everyone to see.
Yusuf Ali So (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!
W. Khan So Moses threw down his staff and suddenly it appeared as a serpent, plainly visible.
M. Sarwar Moses threw his staff and suddenly it became a serpent.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem Then he drew out his hand and- lo and behold!- it was white for the onlookers to see.
Yusuf Ali And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!
W. Khan And he drew out his hand, and it appeared [shining] white to the beholders.
M. Sarwar Then he uncovered his hand and it was sheer white to the onlookers.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh said to the counsellors around him, ‘This man is a learned sorcerer!
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:
W. Khan Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him, ‘Surely this man is a skilful sorcerer.
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh said to the people around him, "He is certainly a skillful magician.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem He means to use his sorcery to drive you out of your land! What do you suggest?’
Yusuf Ali "His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?"
W. Khan Who wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery. Now what do you advise?’
M. Sarwar He wants to expel you from your land through his magic. What is your opinion?"

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem They answered, ‘Delay him and his brother for a while, and send messengers to all the cities
Yusuf Ali They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while), and dispatch to the Cities heralds to collect-
W. Khan They said, ‘Let him and his brother wait a while, and send heralds into the cities,
M. Sarwar They said, "Hold him and his brother off for a while

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem to bring every accomplished sorcerer to you.’
Yusuf Ali "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."
W. Khan who shall bring to you every skilful sorcerer.’
M. Sarwar and summon every skillful magician from all the cities."

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem The sorcerers were [to be] assembled at the appointed time on a certain day
Yusuf Ali So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known,
W. Khan So the sorcerers were gathered on the appointed day
M. Sarwar So all the magicians gathered together

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem and the people were asked,
Yusuf Ali And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?-
W. Khan and the people were told, ‘Will you also gather together,
M. Sarwar at the appointed time

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem ‘Are you all coming? We may follow the sorcerers if they win!’
Yusuf Ali "That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win?"
W. Khan so that we may follow the magicians, if they be the winners.’
M. Sarwar and the people were asked, "Will you all be there so that we may follow the magicians if they become victorious?"

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem When the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, ‘Shall we be rewarded if we win?’
Yusuf Ali So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: "Of course - shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win?
W. Khan When the magicians came, they asked Pharaoh, ‘Shall we have a reward, if we are the winners?’
M. Sarwar When the magicians came, they asked the Pharaoh, "Will there be any reward for us if we win?"

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem and he said, ‘Yes, and you will join my inner court.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."
W. Khan He replied, ‘Certainly, in that case you will join my inner circle.’
M. Sarwar He replied, "You will then be my closest associates".

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem Moses said to them, ‘Throw down whatever you will.’
Yusuf Ali Moses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!"
W. Khan Moses said to the magicians, ‘Throw down whatever you are going to throw.’
M. Sarwar (Moses) asked the magicians, "Cast down what you want to".

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem They threw their ropes and staffs, saying, ‘By Pharaoh’s might, we shall be victorious.’
Yusuf Ali So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!"
W. Khan So they cast down their ropes and staffs, and said, ‘By Pharaoh’s honour, we shall surely win.’
M. Sarwar So they cast down their ropes and staffs saying, "By the honor of the Pharaoh we shall certainly become the winners".

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem But Moses threw his staff and- lo and behold!- it swallowed up their trickery
Yusuf Ali Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!
W. Khan Then Moses threw down his staff, and it swallowed up all that they had conjured into being.
M. Sarwar Then Moses cast down his staff and suddenly it swallowed up what they had falsely invented.

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem and the sorcerers fell down on their knees,
Yusuf Ali Then did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,
W. Khan The magicians fell down prostrate,
M. Sarwar The magicians fell down in adoration

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem exclaiming, ‘We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
Yusuf Ali Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
W. Khan saying, ‘We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
M. Sarwar saying, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem the Lord of Moses and Aaron.’
Yusuf Ali "The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
W. Khan the Lord of Moses and Aaron.’
M. Sarwar and the Lord of Moses and Aaron."

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh said, ‘How dare you believe in him before I have given you permission? He must be the master who taught you sorcery! Soon you will see: I will cut off your alternate hands and feet and then crucify the lot of you!’
Yusuf Ali Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!"
W. Khan Pharaoh said, ‘Have you come to believe in him, before I have given you permission? He is surely your master who has taught you magic. But you shall see. I will cut off your hands and feet on alternate sides and crucify you all.’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh said, "You believed without my permission? He seems to be your chief who has taught you magic. But you will soon know (the result of what you have done).

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem ‘That will do us no harm,’ they said, ‘for we are sure to return to our Lord.
Yusuf Ali They said: "No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!
W. Khan They said, ‘There is no harm. To our Lord we shall return.
M. Sarwar I shall certainly cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides and crucify you all together."

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we were the first to believe.’
Yusuf Ali "Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers!"
W. Khan We hope our Lord will forgive us, as we are the first of the believers.’
M. Sarwar They said, "It does not matter. We shall be returning to our Lord.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem Then We revealed Our will to Moses, ‘Leave with My servants by night, for you will be pursued!’
Yusuf Ali By inspiration we told Moses: "Travel by night with my servants; for surely ye shall be pursued."
W. Khan Then We revealed Our will to Moses, saying, ‘Set forth with My servants, in the night, for you will surely be pursued.’
M. Sarwar We hope that our Lord will forgive us for our sins; we were not believers at first."

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh sent messengers into the cities, proclaiming,
Yusuf Ali Then Pharaoh sent heralds to (all) the Cities,
W. Khan And Pharaoh sent forth heralds to all the cities.
M. Sarwar We sent a revelation to Moses telling him to leave with our servants during the night; they would be pursued (by the Pharaoh).

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem ‘These people are a puny band––
Yusuf Ali (Saying): "These (Israelites) are but a small band,
W. Khan ‘These,’ they said, ‘are only a small band—
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh sent word to all the cities saying,

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem they have enraged us-
Yusuf Ali "And they are raging furiously against us;
W. Khan and they have enraged us—
M. Sarwar "There is a small group of people

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem and we are a large army, on the alert.’
Yusuf Ali "But we are a multitude amply fore-warned."
W. Khan we are a large and watchful force.’
M. Sarwar who have enraged us greatly.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem So it was that We made them leave their gardens and their springs,
Yusuf Ali So We expelled them from gardens, springs,
W. Khan So We made them leave their gardens and springs,
M. Sarwar We are warning all of you about them."

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem their treasures and their noble dwellings-
Yusuf Ali Treasures, and every kind of honourable position;
W. Khan their treasures and their noble dwellings—
M. Sarwar We deprived them (the unbelievers) of gardens, springs,

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem We gave [such] things [later]to the Children of Israel.
Yusuf Ali Thus it was, but We made the Children of Israel inheritors of such things.
W. Khan and We made the Children of Israel inheritors of these bounties.
M. Sarwar treasures, and graceful dwellings.

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh and his people pursued them at sunrise,
Yusuf Ali So they pursued them at sunrise.
W. Khan Pharaoh and his people pursued them at sunrise,
M. Sarwar Thus we let the Israelites inherit them all.

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem and as soon as the two sides came within sight of one another, Moses’ followers said, ‘We shall definitely be caught.’
Yusuf Ali And when the two bodies saw each other, the people of Moses said: "We are sure to be overtaken."
W. Khan and when the two groups saw each other, Moses’ companions said, ‘We are sure to be overtaken.’
M. Sarwar The people of the Pharaoh pursued them at sunrise.

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘No, my Lord is with me: He will guide me,’
Yusuf Ali (Moses) said: "By no means! my Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!"
W. Khan Moses replied, ‘No, My Lord is with me, and He will guide me.’
M. Sarwar When the two groups came close to each other, the companions of Moses said, "We will be caught".

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem and We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your staff.’ It parted- each side like a mighty mountain-
Yusuf Ali Then We told Moses by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.
W. Khan Then We bade Moses strike the sea with his staff. And it parted, and each part was like a huge mountain.
M. Sarwar Moses said, "Certainly not. My Lord is with me and He will certainly guide me."

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem and We brought the others to that place:
Yusuf Ali And We made the other party approach thither.
W. Khan In the meantime We made the others approach that place.
M. Sarwar We sent a revelation to Moses saying, "Strike the sea with your staff." The sea was rent asunder and each side stood high up like a huge mountain.

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem We saved Moses and all his companions,
Yusuf Ali We delivered Moses and all who were with him;
W. Khan We delivered Moses and all those who were with him,
M. Sarwar Then We brought the two parties closer.

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem and drowned the rest.
Yusuf Ali But We drowned the others.
W. Khan then We drowned the others.
M. Sarwar We saved Moses and all the people with him

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan Surely in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe:
M. Sarwar and drowned the other party.

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan truly, your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar In this there was certainly evidence (of the Truth), but most of them did not have any faith.

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem Tell them the story of Abraham,
Yusuf Ali And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham's story.
W. Khan Tell them the story of Abraham,
M. Sarwar Your Lord is certainly Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem when he asked his father and his people, ‘What do you worship?’
Yusuf Ali Behold, he said to his father and his people: "What worship ye?"
W. Khan when he asked his father and his people, ‘What is that which you worship?’
M. Sarwar Tell them the story of Abraham,

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘We worship idols, and are constantly in attendance on them.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them."
W. Khan They said, ‘We worship idols and will continue to cling to them.’
M. Sarwar when he asked his father and others, "What do you worship?"

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem He asked, ‘Do they hear you when you call?
Yusuf Ali He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them)?"
W. Khan He asked, ‘Do they hear you when you call to them?
M. Sarwar They replied, "We worship idols and shall continue to worship them".

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem Do they help or harm you?’
Yusuf Ali "Or do you good or harm?"
W. Khan Do they help or harm you?’
M. Sarwar He asked them, "Can the idols hear you when you pray to them

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem They replied, ‘No, but this is what we saw our fathers doing.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."
W. Khan They replied, ‘But we found our fathers doing the same.’
M. Sarwar or can they benefit or harm you?"

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem Abraham said, ‘Those idols you have worshipped,
Yusuf Ali He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,-
W. Khan Abraham said, ‘Have you really thought about what you have been worshipping,
M. Sarwar They said, "No, but our fathers worshipped them."

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem you and your forefathers,
Yusuf Ali "Ye and your fathers before you?-
W. Khan you and your forefathers—
M. Sarwar (Abraham) said, "Do you know that what you worship and what your grandfathers worshipped

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem are my enemies; not so the Lord of the Worlds,
Yusuf Ali "For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds;
W. Khan they are all my enemies, not so the Lord of the Universe,
M. Sarwar are my enemies? Not so the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem who created me. It is He who guides me;
Yusuf Ali "Who created me, and it is He Who guides me;
W. Khan who created me. It is He who guides me;
M. Sarwar He created me and He will guide me.

Verse 79

Abdel Haleem He who gives me food and drink;
Yusuf Ali "Who gives me food and drink,
W. Khan He who gives me food and drink;
M. Sarwar It is He who gives me food and drink

Verse 80

Abdel Haleem He who cures me when I am ill;
Yusuf Ali "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me;
W. Khan He who cures me when I am ill;
M. Sarwar and heals me when I am sick.

Verse 81

Abdel Haleem He who will make me die and then give me life again;
Yusuf Ali "Who will cause me to die, and then to life (again);
W. Khan He who will cause me to die and bring me back to life;
M. Sarwar He will cause me to die and will bring me back to life.

Verse 82

Abdel Haleem and He who will, I hope, forgive my faults on the Day of Judgement.
Yusuf Ali "And who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the day of Judgment.
W. Khan and He who will, I hope, forgive me my faults on the Day of the Judgement.
M. Sarwar It is He whom I expect to forgive my sins on the Day of Judgment.

Verse 83

Abdel Haleem My Lord, grant me wisdom; join me with the righteous;
Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous;
W. Khan My Lord, bestow wisdom upon me; unite me with the righteous;
M. Sarwar Lord, grant me authority. Join me to the righteous ones.

Verse 84

Abdel Haleem give me a good name among later generations;
Yusuf Ali "Grant me honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the latest (generations);
W. Khan give me a good name among later generations;
M. Sarwar Make my words come true in the future.

Verse 85

Abdel Haleem make me one of those given the Garden of Bliss-
Yusuf Ali "Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss;
W. Khan and make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss;
M. Sarwar Make me inherit the bountiful Paradise.

Verse 86

Abdel Haleem forgive my father, for he is one of those who have gone astray-
Yusuf Ali "Forgive my father, for that he is among those astray;
W. Khan and forgive my father; for he is one of the misguided;
M. Sarwar Forgive my father. He has gone astray.

Verse 87

Abdel Haleem and do not disgrace me on the Day when all people are resurrected:
Yusuf Ali "And let me not be in disgrace on the Day when (men) will be raised up;-
W. Khan and do not disgrace me on the Day when all people are resurrected,
M. Sarwar Do not betray me

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem the Day when neither wealth nor children can help,
Yusuf Ali "The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,
W. Khan the Day when wealth and sons will be of no avail,
M. Sarwar on the Day of Judgment when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem when the only one who will be saved is the one who comes before God with a heart devoted to Him.’
Yusuf Ali "But only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart;
W. Khan and when he alone will be saved who comes to God with a sound heart.’
M. Sarwar except what is done in obedience to God with a submissive heart.

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem When the Garden is brought near to the righteous
Yusuf Ali "To the righteous, the Garden will be brought near,
W. Khan When Paradise shall be brought near to the God-fearing
M. Sarwar On the Day of Judgment Paradise will be brought near

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem and the Fire is placed in full view of the misguided,
Yusuf Ali "And to those straying in Evil, the Fire will be placed in full view;
W. Khan and Hell shall be revealed to the misguided,
M. Sarwar the pious and hell will be left open for the rebellious ones

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem it will be said to them, ‘Where are those you worshipped
Yusuf Ali "And it shall be said to them: 'Where are the (gods) ye worshipped-
W. Khan they will be asked, ‘Where are those whom you worshipped
M. Sarwar who will be asked, "What did you worship

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem beside God? Can they help you now, or even help themselves?’
Yusuf Ali "'Besides Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?'
W. Khan besides God? Can they help you or even help themselves?’
M. Sarwar besides God? Will the idols help you? Can they help themselves?"

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem and then they will all be hurled into Hell, together with those that misled them,
Yusuf Ali "Then they will be thrown headlong into the (Fire),- they and those straying in Evil,
W. Khan Then they will be thrown headlong into Hell, both they and the misguided ones,
M. Sarwar The idol worshippers, the idols, the rebellious ones,

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem and all Iblis’s supporters.
Yusuf Ali "And the whole hosts of Iblis together.
W. Khan and Satan’s legions, all together.
M. Sarwar and the army of satan will all be thrown headlong into hell.

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem There they will say to their gods, as they bicker among themselves,
Yusuf Ali "They will say there in their mutual bickerings:
W. Khan They will dispute between themselves therein, and will say,
M. Sarwar "Quarrelling therein with each other,

Verse 97

Abdel Haleem ‘We were clearly misguided
Yusuf Ali "'By Allah, we were truly in an error manifest,
W. Khan ‘We were clearly misguided
M. Sarwar they will say, "By God, we were in clear error

Verse 98

Abdel Haleem when we made you equal with the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali "'When we held you as equals with the Lord of the Worlds;
W. Khan when we made you equal with the Lord of the Universe.
M. Sarwar when we considered you equal to the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 99

Abdel Haleem It was the evildoers who led us astray,
Yusuf Ali "'And our seducers were only those who were steeped in guilt.
W. Khan It was the evildoers who led us astray,
M. Sarwar Only the sinful ones made us go astray.

Verse 100

Abdel Haleem and now we have no intercessor
Yusuf Ali "'Now, then, we have none to intercede (for us),
W. Khan and we have no intercessors now,
M. Sarwar We have no one to intercede for us before God

Verse 101

Abdel Haleem and no true friend.
Yusuf Ali "'Nor a single friend to feel (for us).
W. Khan and no sincere friend.
M. Sarwar nor a loving friend.

Verse 102

Abdel Haleem If only we could live our lives again, we would be true believers!’
Yusuf Ali "'Now if we only had a chance of return we shall truly be of those who believe!'"
W. Khan If we could only return to the world and be among the believers.’
M. Sarwar Would that we could have a chance to live again so that we might become believers."

Verse 103

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily in this is a Sign but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan There is certainly a sign in that, but most of them would not believe:
M. Sarwar In this there is evidence (of the truth), but many of them do not have any faith.

Verse 104

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan surely, your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord is certainly Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 105

Abdel Haleem The people of Noah, too, called the messengers liars.
Yusuf Ali The people of Noah rejected the messengers.
W. Khan The people of Noah also rejected the messengers.
M. Sarwar The people of Noah rejected the Messengerss.

Verse 106

Abdel Haleem Their brother Noah said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God?
Yusuf Ali Behold, their brother Noah said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?
W. Khan When their brother Noah said to them, ‘Will you have no fear of God?
M. Sarwar Their brother Noah asked them, "Why do you not fear God?

Verse 107

Abdel Haleem I am a faithful messenger sent to you:
Yusuf Ali "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust:
W. Khan I am a trustworthy messenger for you:
M. Sarwar I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you.

Verse 108

Abdel Haleem be mindful of God and obey me.
Yusuf Ali "So fear Allah, and obey me.
W. Khan fear God, and obey me.
M. Sarwar Have fear of God and obey me.

Verse 109

Abdel Haleem I ask no reward of you, for my only reward is with the Lord of the Worlds:
Yusuf Ali "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds:
W. Khan I ask of you no recompense for it, for my only reward is with the Lord of the Universe,
M. Sarwar I ask no payment from you for my preaching. The Lord of the Universe will give me my reward.

Verse 110

Abdel Haleem be mindful of God and obey me.’
Yusuf Ali "So fear Allah, and obey me."
W. Khan so fear God and obey me.’
M. Sarwar Have fear of God and obey me."

Verse 111

Abdel Haleem They answered, ‘Why should we believe you when the worst sort of people follow you?’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Shall we believe in thee when it is the meanest that follow thee?"
W. Khan They replied, ‘Are we to believe in you when your followers are but the lowest of the low?’
M. Sarwar They said, "Should we believe in you when no one has followed you except the lowest ones".

Verse 112

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘What knowledge do I have of what they used to do?
Yusuf Ali He said: "And what do I know as to what they do?
W. Khan He said, ‘What knowledge do I have of their doings?
M. Sarwar (Noah) said, "I have no knowledge of their deeds.

Verse 113

Abdel Haleem It is for my Lord alone to bring them to account- if only you could see-
Yusuf Ali "Their account is only with my Lord, if ye could (but) understand.
W. Khan My Lord alone can bring them to account—if only you could understand—
M. Sarwar If only you would realize, their account is with my Lord.

Verse 114

Abdel Haleem I will not drive believers away.
Yusuf Ali "I am not one to drive away those who believe.
W. Khan I am not going to drive away any believers.
M. Sarwar I do not drive away the believers.

Verse 115

Abdel Haleem I am here only to give people a clear warning.’
Yusuf Ali "I am sent only to warn plainly in public."
W. Khan I am only a plain warner.’
M. Sarwar I am only a Prophet.

Verse 116

Abdel Haleem So they said, ‘Noah, if you do not stop this, you will be stoned.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "If thou desist not, O Noah! thou shalt be stoned (to death)."
W. Khan They said, ‘Noah, if you do not desist, you will be stoned.’
M. Sarwar They said, "Noah, if you do not desist, you will, certainly, be stoned to death."

Verse 117

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My Lord, my people have rejected me,
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! truly my people have rejected me.
W. Khan Noah said, ‘My Lord, my people have rejected me,
M. Sarwar Then Noah said, "Lord, my people have rejected me.

Verse 118

Abdel Haleem so make a firm judgement between me and them, and save me and my believing followers.’
Yusuf Ali "Judge Thou, then, between me and them openly, and deliver me and those of the Believers who are with me."
W. Khan therefore, judge decisively between me and them; and save me and the believers who are with me.’
M. Sarwar Judge among us and save me and the believers with me".

Verse 119

Abdel Haleem So We saved him and his followers in the fully laden ship,
Yusuf Ali So We delivered him and those with him, in the Ark filled (with all creatures).
W. Khan So We saved him, and those who were with him in the laden ark,
M. Sarwar We saved him and those who were with him in a fully laden Ark,

Verse 120

Abdel Haleem and drowned the rest.
Yusuf Ali Thereafter We drowned those who remained behind.
W. Khan and drowned the rest.
M. Sarwar and drowned the others.

Verse 121

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan There is certainly a sign in that; but most of them do not believe:
M. Sarwar In this there is evidence (of the truth) but most of them do not have any faith.

Verse 122

Verse 124

Abdel Haleem Their brother Hud said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God?
Yusuf Ali Behold, their brother Hud said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?
W. Khan Their brother Hud said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
M. Sarwar Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God?

Verse 125

Abdel Haleem I am a faithful messenger sent to you:
Yusuf Ali "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust:
W. Khan I am a trustworthy messenger for you:
M. Sarwar I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you.

Verse 126

Abdel Haleem be mindful of God and obey me.
Yusuf Ali "So fear Allah and obey me.

Abdel Haleem I ask no reward of you, for my only reward is with the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.

Abdel Haleem How can you be so vain that you set up monuments on every high place?
Yusuf Ali "Do ye build a landmark on every high place to amuse yourselves?
W. Khan Do you build monuments on every high place in vanity,
M. Sarwar "Do you build useless monuments on every mountain

Verse 129

Abdel Haleem Do you build fortresses because you hope to be immortal?
Yusuf Ali "And do ye get for yourselves fine buildings in the hope of living therein (for ever)?
W. Khan and erect castles hoping that you will live forever.
M. Sarwar and raise strong mansions as if you were to live forever?

Verse 130

Abdel Haleem Why do you act like tyrants whenever you attack someone?
Yusuf Ali "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power?
W. Khan When you lay hands upon anyone, you do so as tyrants.
M. Sarwar When you attack, you attack as tyrants do.

Verse 131

Abdel Haleem Be mindful of God and obey me;
Yusuf Ali "Now fear Allah, and obey me.
W. Khan So fear God, and obey me;
M. Sarwar Have fear of God and obey me.

Verse 132

Abdel Haleem be mindful of Him who has provided you with everything you know-
Yusuf Ali "Yea, fear Him Who has bestowed on you freely all that ye know.
W. Khan fear Him who has aided you with all that you know—
M. Sarwar Have fear of the One who has bestowed upon you all that you know.

Verse 133

Abdel Haleem He has given you livestock, sons,
Yusuf Ali "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,-
W. Khan He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons,
M. Sarwar He has given you cattle, children,

Verse 134

Abdel Haleem gardens, springs-
Yusuf Ali "And Gardens and Springs.
W. Khan and gardens, and springs—
M. Sarwar gardens, and springs.

Verse 135

Abdel Haleem for I truly fear that the torment of a grievous day will overtake you.’
Yusuf Ali "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day."
W. Khan indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day.’
M. Sarwar I am afraid that you will suffer the torment of the Day of Judgment."

Verse 136

Abdel Haleem They replied, ‘It makes no difference to us whether you warn us or not,
Yusuf Ali They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers!
W. Khan They replied, ‘It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach,
M. Sarwar They said, "Whether you preach to us or not,

Verse 137

Abdel Haleem for we only do what our forefathers used to do:
Yusuf Ali "This is no other than a customary device of the ancients,
W. Khan this is nothing but a habit of the ancients:
M. Sarwar your preaching is nothing but ancient legends and we shall not face any torment".

Verse 138

Abdel Haleem we shall not be punished.’
Yusuf Ali "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!"
W. Khan and we shall not be punished.’
M. Sarwar They rejected him and We destroyed them.

Verse 139

Abdel Haleem They denounced him as a liar, and so We destroyed them. There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe:
Yusuf Ali So they rejected him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan So they rejected him; and We destroyed them. There is certainly a sign in that; but most of them would not believe.
M. Sarwar In this there is evidence (of the Truth), yet most of them do not have any faith.

Verse 140

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 141

Abdel Haleem The people of Thamud, too, called the messengers liars.
Yusuf Ali The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers.
W. Khan The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers.
M. Sarwar The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers.

Verse 142

Abdel Haleem Their brother Salih said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God?
Yusuf Ali Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)?
W. Khan When their brother Salih said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
M. Sarwar Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God?

Verse 143

Abdel Haleem I am a faithful messenger to you:
Yusuf Ali "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust.
W. Khan Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you,
M. Sarwar I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you.

Verse 144

Abdel Haleem be mindful of God and obey me.
Yusuf Ali "So fear Allah, and obey me.
W. Khan so fear God and obey me.
M. Sarwar Have fear of God and obey me.

Verse 145

Abdel Haleem I ask no reward from you, for my only reward is with the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
W. Khan For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe.
M. Sarwar I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 146

Abdel Haleem [Do you think] you will be left secure for ever in what you have here-
Yusuf Ali "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here?-
W. Khan Do you think that you will be left secure [forever]—
M. Sarwar "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever

Verse 147

Abdel Haleem gardens, springs,
Yusuf Ali "Gardens and Springs,
W. Khan in the midst of gardens and fountains,
M. Sarwar amidst the gardens, springs,

Verse 148

Abdel Haleem fields, palm trees laden with fruit-
Yusuf Ali "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)?
W. Khan and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit—
M. Sarwar farms, and palm-trees in thick groves,

Verse 149

Abdel Haleem carving your fine houses from the mountains?
Yusuf Ali "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill.
W. Khan hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill?
M. Sarwar carving comfortable houses out of the mountains?

Verse 150

Abdel Haleem Be mindful of God and obey me:
Yusuf Ali "But fear Allah and obey me;
W. Khan So fear God and obey me:
M. Sarwar Have fear of God and obey me.

Verse 151

Abdel Haleem do not obey those who are given to excess
Yusuf Ali "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,-
W. Khan do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses,
M. Sarwar Do not obey the orders of the transgressors

Verse 152

Abdel Haleem and who spread corruption in the land instead of doing what is right.’
Yusuf Ali "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)."
W. Khan those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right.’
M. Sarwar who spread evil in the land with no reform."

Verse 153

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘You are bewitched!
Yusuf Ali They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!
W. Khan They replied, ‘Surely you are bewitched.
M. Sarwar They said, "You are only bewitched and insane.

Verse 154

Abdel Haleem You are nothing but a man like us. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth.’
Yusuf Ali "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!"
W. Khan You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth.’
M. Sarwar You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth".

Verse 155

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘Here is a camel. She should have her turn to drink and so should you, each on a specified day,
Yusuf Ali He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed.
W. Khan He said, ‘Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day,
M. Sarwar He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day.

Verse 156

Abdel Haleem so do not harm her, or the punishment of a terrible day will befall you.’
Yusuf Ali "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you."
W. Khan so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you.’
M. Sarwar Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)."

Verse 157

Abdel Haleem But they hamstrung her. In the morning they had cause to regret it:
Yusuf Ali But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets.
W. Khan Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful:
M. Sarwar They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful

Verse 158

Abdel Haleem the punishment fell upon them. There truly is a sign in this, though most of them will not believe:
Yusuf Ali But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe.
M. Sarwar and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith.

Verse 159

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 160

Abdel Haleem The people of Lot, too, called the messengers liars.
Yusuf Ali The people of Lut rejected the messengers.
W. Khan Then the people of Lot rejected the messengers.
M. Sarwar The people of Lot rejected the Messengers.

Verse 161

Abdel Haleem Their brother Lot said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God?
Yusuf Ali Behold, their brother Lut said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?
W. Khan When their brother Lot said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
M. Sarwar Their brother Lot asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God?

Verse 162

Abdel Haleem I am a faithful messenger to you:
Yusuf Ali "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust.
W. Khan I am a trustworthy messenger to you:
M. Sarwar I am a trustworthy Messengers.

M. Sarwar I do not ask any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 165

Abdel Haleem Must you, unlike [other] people, lust after males
Yusuf Ali "Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males,
W. Khan Do you, of all people, approach males,
M. Sarwar Do you, in the world, want to have carnal relations with males

Verse 166

Abdel Haleem and abandon the wives that God has created for you? You are exceeding all bounds,’
Yusuf Ali "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing (all limits)!"
W. Khan and leave your wives whom your Lord has created for you? You are a people who transgress all bounds.’
M. Sarwar instead of your wives, whom your Lord has created specially for you? You are a transgressing people."

Verse 167

Abdel Haleem but they replied, ‘Lot! If you do not stop this, you will be driven away.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "If thou desist not, O Lut! thou wilt assuredly be cast out!"
W. Khan They said, ‘If you do not desist, Lot, you will surely be banished.’
M. Sarwar They said, "Lot, if you do not give up preaching, you will certainly be expelled (from this town)".

Verse 168

Abdel Haleem So he said, ‘I loathe what you do:
Yusuf Ali He said: "I do detest your doings."
W. Khan He said, ‘I am one of those who abhors your ways.
M. Sarwar He said, "I certainly hate what you practice.

Verse 169

Abdel Haleem Lord, save me and my family from what they are doing.’
Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! deliver me and my family from such things as they do!"
W. Khan My Lord, save me and my family from their evil doings.’
M. Sarwar Lord, save me and my family from their deeds."

Verse 170

Abdel Haleem We saved him and all his family,
Yusuf Ali So We delivered him and his family,- all
W. Khan We saved him and all of his family,
M. Sarwar We saved him and all of his family

Verse 171

Abdel Haleem except for an old woman who stayed behind,
Yusuf Ali Except an old woman who lingered behind.
W. Khan except for an old woman who stayed behind,
M. Sarwar except an old woman who remained behind.

Verse 172

Abdel Haleem then We destroyed the others,
Yusuf Ali But the rest We destroyed utterly.
W. Khan then We totally destroyed the rest,
M. Sarwar We destroyed the others

Verse 173

Abdel Haleem and poured a rain of destruction down upon them. How dreadful that rain was for those who had been forewarned!
Yusuf Ali We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)!
W. Khan and We poured a rain [of destruction] down upon them— and how evil was the rain which fell on those who were forewarned.
M. Sarwar by pouring upon them a terrible shower of rain. How evil was the rain for those who had been warned!

Verse 174

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this, though most of them will not believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan Surely in this there is a sign: but most of them would not believe:
M. Sarwar In this there is an evidence of the Truth, but many of them did not have any faith.

Verse 175

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might Most Merciful.
W. Khan your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 176

Abdel Haleem The forest-dwellers, too, called the messengers liars.
Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Wood rejected the messengers.
W. Khan The dwellers of the forest also rejected the messengers.
M. Sarwar The dwellers of the forest also rejected the Messengers.

Verse 177

Abdel Haleem Shuayb said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God?
Yusuf Ali Behold, Shu'aib said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?
W. Khan Shu‘ayb said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
M. Sarwar Shu'ayb asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God?

Verse 178

Abdel Haleem I am a faithful messenger to you:
Yusuf Ali "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust.
W. Khan I am a trustworthy messenger to you:
M. Sarwar I am a trustworthy Messengers.

Verse 179

Abdel Haleem be mindful of God and obey me.
Yusuf Ali "So fear Allah and obey me.
W. Khan so fear God, and obey me.
M. Sarwar Have fear of God and obey me.

Verse 180

Abdel Haleem I ask no reward of you, for my only reward is with the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
W. Khan I ask of you no recompense for this; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe.
M. Sarwar I do not ask any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 181

Abdel Haleem Give full measure: do not sell others short.
Yusuf Ali "Give just measure, and cause no loss (to others by fraud).
W. Khan Give full measure, and cause no loss to others.
M. Sarwar "Maintain just measure in your business and do not cause loss to others.

Verse 182

Abdel Haleem Weigh with correct scales:
Yusuf Ali "And weigh with scales true and upright.
W. Khan Weigh with correct scales:
M. Sarwar Weigh your goods with proper balance

Verse 183

Abdel Haleem do not deprive people of what is theirs. Do not spread corruption on earth.
Yusuf Ali "And withhold not things justly due to men, nor do evil in the land, working mischief.
W. Khan do not defraud people of what is rightfully theirs; and do not spread corruption in the land.
M. Sarwar and do not defraud people in their property or spread evil in the land.

Verse 184

Abdel Haleem Be mindful of God who created you and former generations,’
Yusuf Ali "And fear Him Who created you and (who created) the generations before (you)"
W. Khan Fear Him who created you and those who have gone before you.’
M. Sarwar Have fear of the One who has created you and the generations that lived before you."

Verse 185

Abdel Haleem but they replied, ‘You are bewitched!
Yusuf Ali They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!
W. Khan They replied, ‘You are bewitched.
M. Sarwar They said, "You are no more than a bewitched and insane man

Verse 186

Abdel Haleem You are nothing but a man like us. In fact we think you are a liar.
Yusuf Ali "Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar!
W. Khan You are only a human being like ourselves. Indeed we think you are a liar.
M. Sarwar and a mere mortal like us. We think you are a liar.

Verse 187

Abdel Haleem Make bits of the heavens fall down on us, if you are telling the truth.’
Yusuf Ali "Now cause a piece of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful!"
W. Khan So cause a fragment of the sky to fall on us, if you are truthful.’
M. Sarwar Let a part of the sky fall on us if what you say is true".

Verse 188

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My Lord knows best what you do.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "My Lord knows best what ye do."
W. Khan He said, ‘My Lord has full knowledge of all your actions.’
M. Sarwar He said, "My Lord knows all that you do."

Verse 189

Abdel Haleem They called him a liar, and so the torment of the Day of Shadow came upon them- it was the torment of a terrible day.
Yusuf Ali But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.
W. Khan They rejected him, and then had to suffer the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom. That was indeed the punishment of an awful day.
M. Sarwar They rejected him and then the torment of the gloomy day struck them. It was certainly a great torment.

Verse 190

Abdel Haleem There truly is a sign in this, though most of them will not believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
W. Khan Surely, in this is indeed a sign; but most of them would not believe:
M. Sarwar In this there is an evidence of the Truth, but many of them did not have any faith.

Verse 191

Abdel Haleem your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 192

Abdel Haleem Truly, this Quran has been sent down by the Lord of the Worlds:
Yusuf Ali Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:
W. Khan This surely is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe:
M. Sarwar This, (Quran), is certainly the revelation from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 193

Abdel Haleem the Trustworthy Spirit brought it down
Yusuf Ali With it came down the spirit of Faith and Truth-
W. Khan the Faithful Spirit has brought it down
M. Sarwar It has been revealed through the trustworthy Spirit

Verse 194

Abdel Haleem to your heart [Prophet], so that you could bring warning
Yusuf Ali To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish.
W. Khan into your heart, so that you may be a warner,
M. Sarwar to your heart, so that you will warn (the people of the dangers of disobeying God).

Verse 195

Abdel Haleem in a clear Arabic tongue.
Yusuf Ali In the perspicuous Arabic tongue.
W. Khan in clear Arabic speech.
M. Sarwar It has been revealed in plain Arabic.

Verse 196

Abdel Haleem This was foretold in the scriptures of earlier religions.
Yusuf Ali Without doubt it is (announced) in the mystic Books of former peoples.
W. Khan Surely, it is foretold in the ancient scriptures.
M. Sarwar Its news was also mentioned in the ancient Books.

Verse 197

Abdel Haleem Is it not proof enough for them that the learned men of the Children of Israel have recognized it?
Yusuf Ali Is it not a Sign to them that the Learned of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?
W. Khan Is it not evidence enough for them that the learned among the Children of Israel have recognized this [as true]?
M. Sarwar Is not the fact (that the Israelite scholars already knew about the Quran through their Book) sufficient evidence for the pagans of the truthfulness (of the Quran)?

Verse 198

Abdel Haleem If We had sent it down to someone who was not an Arab,
Yusuf Ali Had We revealed it to any of the non-Arabs,
W. Khan Had We revealed it to any one of the non-Arabs,
M. Sarwar Had We revealed it to a non-Arab

Verse 199

Abdel Haleem and he had recited it to them, they still would not have believed in it.
Yusuf Ali And had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
W. Khan and he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
M. Sarwar who would have read it to them, they (pagans) would not have believed in it.

Verse 200

Abdel Haleem So We make it pass straight through the hearts of the guilty:
Yusuf Ali Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners.
W. Khan We have thus caused denial of truth to enter into the hearts of the sinners:
M. Sarwar Thus it passes through the hearts of the criminals.

Verse 201

Abdel Haleem they will not believe in it until they see the grievous torment,
Yusuf Ali They will not believe in it until they see the grievous Penalty;
W. Khan they will not believe in it until they see the grievous punishment.
M. Sarwar They will not believe in it until they suffer the painful torment.

Verse 202

Abdel Haleem which will suddenly hit them when they are not expecting it,
Yusuf Ali But the (Penalty) will come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;
W. Khan It will come upon them suddenly when they are not expecting it.
M. Sarwar The torment will strike them suddenly without their knowledge.

Verse 203

Abdel Haleem and then they will say, ‘Can we have more time?’
Yusuf Ali Then they will say: "Shall we be respited?"
W. Khan Then they will exclaim, ‘Could we have some respite?’
M. Sarwar They will say, "Can we be granted any respite?"

Verse 204

Abdel Haleem How can they ask that Our punishment be brought to them sooner?
Yusuf Ali Do they then ask for Our Penalty to be hastened on?
W. Khan Do they want to hasten Our punishment?
M. Sarwar Do they want to hasten Our torment?

Verse 205

Abdel Haleem Think, if we let them enjoy this life for some years
Yusuf Ali Seest thou? If We do let them enjoy (this life) for a few years,
W. Khan Think! If We let them enjoy life for some years,
M. Sarwar Do you not see that even if We give them respite for years

Verse 206

Abdel Haleem and then the promised torment came upon them,
Yusuf Ali Yet there comes to them at length the (Punishment) which they were promised!
W. Khan and then the promised punishment fell upon them,
M. Sarwar and then Our torment will strike them,

Verse 207

Abdel Haleem what good would their past enjoyment be to them?
Yusuf Ali It will profit them not that they enjoyed (this life)!
W. Khan of what avail would their past enjoyment be to them?
M. Sarwar none of their luxuries will be able to save them from the torment?

Verse 208

Abdel Haleem Never have We destroyed a town without sending down messengers to warn it,
Yusuf Ali Never did We destroy a population, but had its warners -
W. Khan Never have We destroyed a town without sending down messengers to warn it,
M. Sarwar We never destroyed any town without first sending to them warning and guidance.

Verse 209

Abdel Haleem as a reminder from Us: We are never unjust.
Yusuf Ali By way of reminder; and We never are unjust.
W. Khan as a reminder from Us: We are never unjust.
M. Sarwar We have never been unjust to anyone.

Verse 210

Abdel Haleem It was not the jinn who brought down this Quran:
Yusuf Ali No evil ones have brought down this (Revelation):
W. Khan It was not the devils who brought down the Quran:
M. Sarwar The satans have not revealed the Quran;

Verse 211

Abdel Haleem it is neither in their interests nor in their power,
Yusuf Ali It would neither suit them nor would they be able (to produce it).
W. Khan neither are they worthy of it, nor are they capable of it,
M. Sarwar they are not supposed to do so. Nor do have they the ability for such a task.

Verse 212

Abdel Haleem indeed they are prevented from overhearing it.
Yusuf Ali Indeed they have been removed far from even (a chance of) hearing it.
W. Khan indeed they are debarred from overhearing it.
M. Sarwar The satans are barred from listening to anything from the heavens.

Verse 213

Abdel Haleem So [Prophet] do not invoke any gods beside God, or you will incur punishment.
Yusuf Ali So call not on any other god with Allah, or thou wilt be among those under the Penalty.
W. Khan So do not call on any deity besides God, lest you incur His punishment.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), do not worship anything besides God lest you suffer the punishment.

Verse 214

Abdel Haleem Warn your nearest kinsfolk
Yusuf Ali And admonish thy nearest kinsmen,
W. Khan Warn your nearest kinsmen,
M. Sarwar Warn your close relatives

Verse 215

Abdel Haleem and lower your wing tenderly over the believers who follow you.
Yusuf Ali And lower thy wing to the Believers who follow thee.
W. Khan and extend kindness and affection to those of the believers who follow you.
M. Sarwar and be kind to your believing followers.

Verse 216

Abdel Haleem If they disobey you, say, ‘I bear no responsibility for your actions.’
Yusuf Ali Then if they disobey thee, say: "I am free (of responsibility) for what ye do!"
W. Khan If they disobey you, say, ‘I bear no responsibility for what you do.’
M. Sarwar If they disobey you, tell them, "I condemn your disobedient deeds".

Verse 217

Abdel Haleem Put your trust in the Almighty, the Merciful,
Yusuf Ali And put thy trust on the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,-
W. Khan Put your trust in the Mighty One, the Merciful,
M. Sarwar Have trust in the Majestic and All-merciful God,

Verse 218

Abdel Haleem who sees you when you stand up [for prayer]
Yusuf Ali Who seeth thee standing forth (in prayer),
W. Khan who sees you when you stand up [for prayer],
M. Sarwar who can see whether you stand up

Verse 219

Abdel Haleem and sees your movements among the worshippers:
Yusuf Ali And thy movements among those who prostrate themselves,
W. Khan and sees your movements among those who prostrate themselves:
M. Sarwar or move during your prostration with the worshippers.

Verse 220

Abdel Haleem He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
Yusuf Ali For it is He Who heareth and knoweth all things.
W. Khan He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
M. Sarwar He is All-hearing and All-knowing."

Verse 221

Abdel Haleem Shall I tell you who the jinn come down to?
Yusuf Ali Shall I inform you, (O people!), on whom it is that the evil ones descend?
W. Khan Shall I tell you upon whom the devils descend?
M. Sarwar Should I tell you to whom the satans come?

Verse 222

Abdel Haleem They come down to every lying sinner
Yusuf Ali They descend on every lying, wicked person,
W. Khan They descend on every lying sinner,
M. Sarwar They come to every sinful liar.

Verse 223

Abdel Haleem who readily lends an ear to them, and most of them are liars:
Yusuf Ali (Into whose ears) they pour hearsay vanities, and most of them are liars.
W. Khan who lends an ear to them, and most of them are liars.
M. Sarwar The satans try to listen to the heavens but many of them are liars.

Verse 224

Abdel Haleem only those who are lost in error follow the poets.
Yusuf Ali And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them:
W. Khan And as for the poets—it is the misled who follow them.
M. Sarwar Only the erring people follow the poets.

Verse 225

Abdel Haleem Do you not see how they rove aimlessly in every valley;
Yusuf Ali Seest thou not that they wander distracted in every valley?-
W. Khan Do you not see how they wander aimlessly in every valley,
M. Sarwar Have you not seen them wandering and bewildered in every valley

Verse 226

Abdel Haleem how they say what they do not do?
Yusuf Ali And that they say what they practise not?-
W. Khan preaching what they do not practice.
M. Sarwar and preaching what they themselves never practice.

Verse 227

Abdel Haleem Not so those [poets] who believe, do good deeds, remember God often, and defend themselves after they have been wronged. The evildoers will find out what they will return to.
Yusuf Ali Except those who believe, work righteousness, engage much in the remembrance of Allah, and defend themselves only after they are unjustly attacked. And soon will the unjust assailants know what vicissitudes their affairs will take!
W. Khan Not so the true believers who do good works and remember God with fervour and defend themselves only after they are wronged. The wrongdoers will soon know how evil a turn their affairs will take.
M. Sarwar The righteously striving believers among them who remember God very often and use their talent to seek help after they have been wronged are the exceptional. The unjust will soon know how terrible their end will be.
