Chapter 27

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Ta Sin These are the verses of the Quran––a scripture that makes things clear;
Yusuf Ali These are verses of the Qur'an,-a book that makes (things) clear;
W. Khan Ta Sin These are verses from the Quran, a book that makes things clear;
M. Sarwar Ta. Sin. These are the verses of the Quran and of the illustrious Book

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem a guide and joyful news for the believers
Yusuf Ali A guide: and glad tidings for the believers,-
W. Khan it is guidance and good news for the believers
M. Sarwar They are glad news and guidance for the believers

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and believe firmly in the life to come.
Yusuf Ali Those who establish regular prayers and give in regular charity, and also have (full) assurance of the hereafter.
W. Khan who pray regularly and pay obligatory alms and have firm faith in the Hereafter.
M. Sarwar who are steadfast in prayer, who pay the religious tax, and who have strong faith in the life hereafter.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem As for those who do not believe in the life to come, We have made their deeds seem alluring to them, so they wander blindly:
Yusuf Ali As to those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds pleasing in their eyes; and so they wander about in distraction.
W. Khan We have made those who do not believe in the Hereafter feel their actions appear good to them, so they wander blindly:
M. Sarwar We have made the deeds of those who do not believe in the life to come, attractive to them and they wander about blindly.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem it is they who will have the worst suffering, and will be the ones to lose most in the life to come.
Yusuf Ali Such are they for whom a grievous Penalty is (waiting); and in the Hereafter theirs will be the greatest loss.
W. Khan they are the ones who will have the worst of punishment, and in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers.
M. Sarwar They will suffer the worst kind of torment and will be lost in the life to come.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem You [Prophet] receive the Quran from One who is all wise, all knowing.
Yusuf Ali As to thee, the Qur'an is bestowed upon thee from the presence of one who is wise and all-knowing.
W. Khan You have received this Quran from One who is all-wise, all-knowing.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), you have certainly received the Quran from the All-wise and All-knowing One.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Moses said to his family, ‘I have seen a fire. I will bring you news from there, or a burning stick for you to warm yourselves.’
Yusuf Ali Behold! Moses said to his family: "I perceive a fire; soon will I bring you from there some information, or I will bring you a burning brand to light our fuel, that ye may warm yourselves.
W. Khan Tell of Moses who said to his family, ‘I have seen a fire. I will bring you news from there, or a burning brand for you to warm yourselves.’
M. Sarwar Moses said to his family, "I have seen some fire. I shall bring you some news about it or some fire so that you can warmyourselves".

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem When he reached the fire, a voice called: ‘Blessed is the person near this fireand those around it; may God be exalted, the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali But when he came to the (fire), a voice was heard: "Blessed are those in the fire and those around: and glory to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
W. Khan When he came up to it, a voice called out, ‘Blessed be whoever is near this fire, and whoever is around it! Glory be to God, Lord of the Universe!
M. Sarwar When he approached the fire, he was told, "Blessed is the one in the fire and those around it. All glory belongs to God, the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem Moses, I am God, the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali "O Moses! verily, I am Allah, the exalted in might, the wise!....
W. Khan O Moses, I am God, the Powerful, the Wise.
M. Sarwar Moses, I am God, the Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Throw down your staff,’ but when he saw it moving like a snake, he turned and fled. ‘Moses, do not be afraid! The messengers need have no fear in My presence,
Yusuf Ali "Now do thou throw thy rod!" But when he saw it moving (of its own accord)as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: "O Moses!" (it was said), "Fear not: truly, in My presence, those called as messengers have no fear,-
W. Khan Throw down your staff.’ But when he saw it moving like a snake, he turned and fled. ‘Moses, do not be afraid! The messengers need have no fear in My presence;
M. Sarwar Throw down your staff." When Moses saw his staff on the ground moving like a living creature, he stepped back and did not come forward again. The Lord said,"Moses, do not be afraid. Messengers do not become afraid in My presence".

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem I am truly most forgiving and merciful to those who do wrong,and then replace their evil with good.
Yusuf Ali "But if any have done wrong and have thereafter substituted good to take the place of evil, truly, I am Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan as for those who do wrong and then do good after evil, I am most forgiving, most merciful.
M. Sarwar Only the unjust become afraid in My presence. Even to these people who replace their bad deeds by good ones, I am All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem Put your hand inside your cloak and it will come out white, but unharmed. These are among the nine signs that you will show Pharaoh and his people; they have really gone too far.’
Yusuf Ali "Now put thy hand into thy bosom, and it will come forth white without stain (or harm): (these are) among the nine Signs (thou wilt take) to Pharaoh and his people: for they are a people rebellious in transgression."
W. Khan Now put your hand inside your cloak next to your bosom and it will come out [shining] white, without any blemish. This will be one of the nine signs for Pharaoh and his people: for truly they are a rebellious people.’
M. Sarwar Put your hand into your pocket. It will come out sheer white but unharmed. This is one of the nine miracles which shall be showing to the Pharaoh and his people; they are truly wicked men."

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem But when Our enlightening signs came to them, they said, ‘This is clearly [just] sorcery!’
Yusuf Ali But when Our Signs came to them, that should have opened their eyes, they said: "This is sorcery manifest!"
W. Khan But when Our signs came to them in all their clarity they said, ‘This is clearly sorcery!’
M. Sarwar When Our miracles were visibly shown to them, they said, "It is plain magic".

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem They denied them, in their wickedness and their pride, even though their souls acknowledged them as true. See how those who spread corruption met their end!
Yusuf Ali And they rejected those Signs in iniquity and arrogance, though their souls were convinced thereof: so see what was the end of those who acted corruptly!
W. Khan And they persisted in rejecting them wrongfully and arrogantly, while in their hearts they were convinced of their truth. Observe, then, how evil was the fate of the evil-doers.
M. Sarwar They rejected the evidence because of their arrogance and injustice, although their souls knew it to be true. Think how terrible the end of the sinful ones was!

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem We gave knowledge to David and Solomon, and they both said, ‘Praise be to God, who has favoured us over many of His believing servants.’
Yusuf Ali We gave (in the past) knowledge to David and Solomon: And they both said: "Praise be to Allah, Who has favoured us above many of his servants who believe!"
W. Khan We bestowed knowledge on David and Solomon and they both said, ‘Praise be to God who has exalted us above many of His believing servants.’
M. Sarwar We gave knowledge to David and Soloman. They said, "It is only God who deserves all praise. He has exalted us above many of His believing servants."

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Solomon succeeded David. He said, ‘People, we have been taught the speech of birds, and we have been given a share of everything: this is a clearly a great favour.’
Yusuf Ali And Solomon was David's heir. He said: "O ye people! We have been taught the speech of birds, and on us has been bestowed (a little) of all things: this is indeed Grace manifest (from Allah.)"
W. Khan Solomon succeeded David. He said, ‘Know, my people, that we have been taught the speech of birds and endowed with all good things. Surely this is God’s manifest grace.’
M. Sarwar Solomon became the heir to David. He said, "People, we have been taught the language of the birds and have been granted a share of everything. This indeed is a manifest favor (from God)".

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem Solomon’s hosts of jinn, men, and birds were marshalled in ordered ranks before him,
Yusuf Ali And before Solomon were marshalled his hosts,- of Jinns and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and ranks.
W. Khan Solomon’s hosts of jinn and men and birds, were all gathered together in his presence and were ranged in battle order,
M. Sarwar Soloman's army, consisting of human beings, jinn, and birds were gathered together in his presence in ranks.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem and when they came to the Valley of the Ants, one ant said, ‘Ants! Go into your homes, in case Solomon and his hosts unwittingly crush you.’
Yusuf Ali At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said: "O ye ants, get into your habitations, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it."
W. Khan and when they came to the Valley of the Ants, one ant said, ‘Ants! Go into your dwellings, in case Solomon and his hosts inadvertently crush you.’
M. Sarwar When they arrived in the valley of the ants, one ant said to the others, "Enter your dwellings lest you be carelessly crushed by Soloman and his army."

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Solomon smiled broadly at her words and said, ‘Lord, inspire me to be thankful for the blessings You have granted me and my parents, and to do good deeds that please You; admit me by Your grace into the ranks of Your righteous servants.’
Yusuf Ali So he smiled, amused at her speech; and he said: "O my Lord! so order me that I may be grateful for Thy favours, which thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may work the righteousness that will please Thee: And admit me, by Thy Grace, to the ranks of Thy righteous Servants."
W. Khan Solomon smiled broadly at its words and said, ‘Lord, inspire me to be thankful for the blessings You have granted me and my parents, and to do good deeds that please You; and include me, by Your grace, among Your righteous servants!’
M. Sarwar (Solomon) smiled at the ant's remarks and said, "Lord, inspire me to thank you for Your favors to me and my parents and to act righteously so as to please you. Admit me, by your mercy into the company of Your righteous servants".

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem Solomon inspected the birds and said, ‘Why do I not see the hoopoe? Is he absent?
Yusuf Ali And he took a muster of the Birds; and he said: "Why is it I see not the Hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees?
W. Khan Then Solomon inspected the birds, and said, ‘How is it that I do not see the hoopoe? Is he absent then?
M. Sarwar (Solomon) inspected the birds and said, "How is it that I cannot see the hoopoe. Is he absent?

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem I will punish him severely, or kill him, unless he brings me a convincing excuse for his absence.’
Yusuf Ali "I will certainly punish him with a severe penalty, or execute him, unless he bring me a clear reason (for absence)."
W. Khan I shall surely punish him severely or order him to be executed, unless he gives me a good reason for his absence.’
M. Sarwar I shall certainly punish him severely or slaughter him unless he has a good reason for his absence."

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem But the hoopoe did not stay away long: he came and said, ‘I have learned something you did not know: I come to you from Sheba with firm news.
Yusuf Ali But the Hoopoe tarried not far: he (came up and) said: "I have compassed (territory) which thou hast not compassed, and I have come to thee from Saba with tidings true.
W. Khan But he was not long in coming, and said, ‘I have learnt something you did not know. I have come to you from Sheba with reliable news.
M. Sarwar Not long after the hoopoe came forward and said, "I have information which you do not have. I have come from the land of Sheba with a true report.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem I found a woman ruling over the people, who has been given a share of everything- she has a magnificent throne-
Yusuf Ali "I found (there) a woman ruling over them and provided with every requisite; and she has a magnificent throne.
W. Khan I found a woman ruling over them, who has been given everything and she has a mighty throne.
M. Sarwar I found a woman ruling the people there and she possessed something of (almost) everything and a great throne.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem [but] I found that she and her people worshipped the sun instead of God. Satan has made their deeds seem alluring to them, and diverted them from the right path: they cannot find the right path.
Yusuf Ali "I found her and her people worshipping the sun besides Allah: Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing in their eyes, and has kept them away from the Path,- so they receive no guidance,-
W. Khan I found her and her people worshipping the sun, instead of God. Satan has made their conduct appear good to them, and has thus diverted them from the right path, so that they might not be guided.
M. Sarwar I found her and her people prostrating before the sun instead of God. Satan has made their deeds attractive to them. He has kept them away from the right path and they have no guidance.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem Should they not worship God, who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and earth and knows both what you people conceal and what you declare?
Yusuf Ali "(Kept them away from the Path), that they should not worship Allah, Who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what ye hide and what ye reveal.
W. Khan Should they not worship God who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and earth and knows both what you conceal and what you make known?
M. Sarwar (Satan has done this) so that they will not worship God who brings forth whatever is hidden in the heavens and the earth and knows whatever you conceal or reveal.

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem He is God, there is no god but Him, the Lord of the mighty throne.’
Yusuf Ali "Allah!- there is no god but He!- Lord of the Throne Supreme!"
W. Khan He is God: there is no deity but He, the Lord of the mighty throne.’
M. Sarwar God is the only Lord and master of the Great Throne."

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem Solomon said, ‘We shall see whether you are telling the truth or lying.
Yusuf Ali (Solomon) said: "Soon shall we see whether thou hast told the truth or lied!
W. Khan Solomon said, ‘We shall soon see whether you have spoken the truth, or whether you are a liar.
M. Sarwar Solomon said, "We shall see whether you are truthful or a liar.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them, then withdraw and see what answer they send back.’
Yusuf Ali "Go thou, with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them, and (wait to) see what answer they return"...
W. Khan Go with this letter of mine and lay it before them, then withdraw from them and see how they respond.’
M. Sarwar Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them, then return and see what their reply will be."

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem The Queen of Sheba said, ‘Counsellors, a gracious letter has been delivered to me.
Yusuf Ali (The queen) said: "Ye chiefs! here is delivered to me - a letter worthy of respect.
W. Khan The Queen of Sheba said, ‘O Counsellors, an honourable letter has been delivered to me.
M. Sarwar (The Queen of Sheba) said to her officials, "A gracious letter has been dropped before me.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem It is from Solomon, and it says, “In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy,
Yusuf Ali "It is from Solomon, and is (as follows): 'In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful:
W. Khan It is from Solomon. It reads, “In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful,
M. Sarwar It reads, 'From Soloman. In the Name of God, the Beneficent and the Merciful.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem do not put yourselves above me, and come to me in submission to God.”’
Yusuf Ali "'Be ye not arrogant against me, but come to me in submission (to the true Religion).'"
W. Khan do not exalt yourselves above me, but come to me in all submission.”
M. Sarwar Do not consider yourselves superior to me but come to me as Muslims (in submission)".

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem She said, ‘Counsellors, give me your counsel in the matter I now face: I only ever decide on matters in your presence.’
Yusuf Ali She said: "Ye chiefs! advise me in (this) my affair: no affair have I decided except in your presence."
W. Khan Now advise me in this, Counsellors. I never decide any affair till I have conferred with you.’
M. Sarwar She said, "My officials, what are your views on this matter? I will not decide until I have your views.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem They replied, ‘We possess great force and power in war, but you are in command, so consider what orders to give us.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "We are endued with strength, and given to vehement war: but the command is with thee; so consider what thou wilt command."
W. Khan They said, ‘We are strong and our prowess in battle is great, but the decision is in your hands, so consider what you will command.’
M. Sarwar They replied, "We have great power and valor. You are the commander, so decide as you like".

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem She said, ‘Whenever kings go into a city, they ruin it and humiliate its leaders- that is what they do-
Yusuf Ali She said: "Kings, when they enter a country, despoil it, and make the noblest of its people its meanest thus do they behave.
W. Khan She said, ‘Surely, when mighty kings invade a country, they despoil it and humiliate its noblest inhabitants—these men will do the same—
M. Sarwar She said, "When Kings enter a town they destroy it and disrespect its honorable people. That is what they will do, too.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem but I am going to send them a gift, then see what answer my envoys bring back.’
Yusuf Ali "But I am going to send him a present, and (wait) to see with what (answer) return (my) ambassadors."
W. Khan but I shall send them a present and see with what reply my envoys will return.’
M. Sarwar I will send a gift and we shall see what response the Messengers will bring."

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem When her envoy came to Solomon, Solomon said, ‘What! Are you offering me wealth? What God has given me is better than what He has given you, though you rejoice in this gift of yours.
Yusuf Ali Now when (the embassy) came to Solomon, he said: "Will ye give me abundance in wealth? But that which Allah has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay it is ye who rejoice in your gift!
W. Khan So when [the envoy] came to Solomon he said, ‘What! Are you offering me wealth? But that which God has given me is better than that which He has given you. Yet you rejoice in your gift.
M. Sarwar When her Messengers came to Soloman, he said, "Have you brought me wealth? What God has given to me is far better than what He has given to you, but you are happy with your gifts.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Go back to your people: we shall certainly come upon them with irresistible forces, and drive them, disgraced and humbled, from their land.’
Yusuf Ali "Go back to them, and be sure we shall come to them with such hosts as they will never be able to meet: We shall expel them from there in disgrace, and they will feel humbled (indeed)."
W. Khan Go back to them: we shall most certainly come upon them with forces which they will never be able to withstand, and shall most certainly cause them to be driven from their lands, disgraced and humbled!’
M. Sarwar Go back to your people and we shall soon come there with an army which they will not be able to face. We shall drive them from their town, humble, and disgraced."

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem Then he said, ‘Counsellors, which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?’
Yusuf Ali He said (to his own men): "Ye chiefs! which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"
W. Khan Solomon then said, ‘O Counsellors, which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?
M. Sarwar Solomon asked his people, "Who among you can bring her throne before (she, the queen of Sheba) comes to me submissively?"

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem A powerful and crafty jinn replied, ‘I will bring it to you before you can even rise from your place. I am strong and trustworthy enough,’
Yusuf Ali Said an 'Ifrit, of the Jinns: "I will bring it to thee before thou rise from thy council: indeed I have full strength for the purpose, and may be trusted."
W. Khan A demon from among the jinn said, ‘I will bring it to you before you get up from your seat. I am strong and trustworthy enough to do it.’
M. Sarwar A monstrous jinn said, "I can bring it before you even stand up. I am powerful and trustworthy".

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem but one of them who had some knowledge of the Scripture said, ‘I will bring it to you in the twinkling of an eye.’ When Solomon saw it set before him, he said, ‘This is a favour from my Lord, to test whether I am grateful or not: if anyone is grateful, it is for his own good, if anyone is ungrateful, then my Lord is self-sufficient and most generous.’
Yusuf Ali Said one who had knowledge of the Book: "I will bring it to thee within the twinkling of an eye!" Then when (Solomon) saw it placed firmly before him, he said: "This is by the Grace of my Lord!- to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! and if any is grateful, truly his gratitude is (a gain) for his own soul; but if any is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Free of all Needs, Supreme in Honour !"
W. Khan But one of them who had some knowledge of the Book said, ‘I will bring it to you in the twinkling of an eye.’ When Solomon saw it placed before him, he exclaimed, ‘This is by the grace of my Lord, to test whether I am grateful or ungrateful. Whosoever is grateful, it is for the good of his own self; and whosoever is ungrateful, then surely my Lord is self-sufficient and generous.’
M. Sarwar The one who had knowledge from the Book said, "I can bring it to you before you even blink your eye." When Solomon saw the throne placed before him, he said, "This is a favor from my Lord by which He wants to test whether I am grateful or ungrateful. Whoever thanks God does so for his own good. Whoever is ungrateful to God should know that my Lord is Self-Sufficient and Benevolent."

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem Then he said, ‘Disguise her throne, and we shall see whether or not she recognizes it.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "Transform her throne out of all recognition by her: let us see whether she is guided (to the truth) or is one of those who receive no guidance."
W. Khan He said, ‘Disguise her throne. We shall see whether or not she will recognize it.’
M. Sarwar Then he said, "Make a few changes to her throne and let us see whether she will recognize it or not."

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem When she arrived, she was asked, ‘Is this your throne?’ She replied, ‘It looks like it.’ [Solomon said], ‘We were given knowledge before her, and we devoted ourselves to God;
Yusuf Ali So when she arrived, she was asked, "Is this thy throne?" She said, "It was just like this; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam)."
W. Khan When she came to Solomon, she was asked, ‘Is your throne like this?’ She replied, ‘It looks as though it were the same, and we had been given knowledge [of your power] before this, and we have already submitted.’
M. Sarwar When she came she was asked, "Is your throne like this?" She replied, "It seems that this is it. We had received the knowledge before this and were submissive (to Solomon's power)".

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem she was prevented by what she worshipped instead of God, for she came from a disbelieving people.’
Yusuf Ali And he diverted her from the worship of others besides Allah: for she was (sprung) of a people that had no faith.
W. Khan And that which she used to worship beside God had stopped her [from believing]; for she came of a disbelieving people.
M. Sarwar Her idols prevented her from believing in God and she was an infidel.

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem Then it was said to her, ‘Enter the hall,’ but when she saw it, she thought it was a deep pool of water, and bared her legs. Solomon explained, ‘It is just a hall paved with glass,’ and she said, ‘My Lord, I have wronged myself: I devote myself, with Solomon, to God, the Lord of the Worlds.’
Yusuf Ali She was asked to enter the lofty Palace: but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water, and she (tucked up her skirts), uncovering her legs. He said: "This is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass." She said: "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do (now) submit (in Islam), with Solomon, to the Lord of the Worlds."
W. Khan Then she was bidden to enter the palace; but when she saw it, she thought it was a deep pool of water, and bared her legs. But Solomon explained, ‘It is just a palace paved with glass,’ and she said, ‘My Lord, I have wronged myself: now I submit myself along with Solomon, to God, the Lord of the Universe.’
M. Sarwar She was told to enter the palace. When she saw it, she thought that it was a pool and raised her clothe up to her legs. Solomon said, "This is a palace constructed with glass." She said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself and I submit myself with Solomon to the will of God, the Lord of the Universe."

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem To the people of Thamud We sent their brother, Salih, saying, ‘Worship God alone,’ but they split into two rival factions.
Yusuf Ali We sent (aforetime), to the Thamud, their brother Salih, saying, "Serve Allah": But behold, they became two factions quarrelling with each other.
W. Khan To Thamud We sent their brother Salih. He said, ‘Serve none but God.’ But they divided themselves into two factions contending with one another.
M. Sarwar We sent to the tribe of Thamud their brother Salih so that they would worship God, but they became two quarrelling groups.

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem Salih said, ‘My people, why do you rush to bring [forward] what is bad rather than good? Why do you not ask forgiveness of God, so that you may be given mercy?’
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my people! why ask ye to hasten on the evil in preference to the good? If only ye ask Allah for forgiveness, ye may hope to receive mercy.
W. Khan He urged them, ‘O my people, why do you wish to hasten on the evil rather than the good? Why do you not ask forgiveness of God, so that you may be shown mercy?’
M. Sarwar Salih said, "My people, why do you commit sins so quickly before doing good? Would that you ask forgiveness from God so that perhaps He will have mercy upon you."

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘We see you and your fol-lowers as an evil omen.’ He replied, ‘God will decide on any omen you may see: you people are being put to the test.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Ill omen do we augur from thee and those that are with thee". He said: "Your ill omen is with Allah; yea, ye are a people under trial."
W. Khan They said, ‘We see you and your followers as an evil omen.’ He replied, ‘No, your evil omen is with God; the truth is that you are a people being put to the test.’
M. Sarwar They said, "We have an ill omen about you and your followers." Salih replied, God has made your ill fortune await you. You are a people on trial."

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem There were nine men in the city who spread corruption in the land without making amends.
Yusuf Ali There were in the city nine men of a family, who made mischief in the land, and would not reform.
W. Khan There were in the city nine men who spread corruption in the land, and would not reform.
M. Sarwar There were nine tribes in the city spreading evil without any reform in the land.

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Swear by God: we shall attack this man and his household in the night, then say to his next of kin, “We did not witness the destruction of his household. We are telling the truth.”’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Swear a mutual oath by Allah that we shall make a secret night attack on him and his people, and that we shall then say to his heir (when he seeks vengeance): 'We were not present at the slaughter of his people, and we are positively telling the truth.'"
W. Khan They said, ‘Let us bind ourselves by an oath sworn in the name of God that we shall attack Salih and his family by night, and to his protector [who demands retribution], we shall say, ‘We were not present when they were slain. We are telling the truth.’
M. Sarwar They said, "Let us swear by God to do away with him and his family during the night then tell his guardian that we did not see how he and his family had been destroyed, and we shall be telling the truth."

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem So they devised their evil plan, but We too made a plan of which they were unaware.
Yusuf Ali They plotted and planned, but We too planned, even while they perceived it not.
W. Khan Thus they devised a plan, and We also devised a plan, but they were not aware of it.
M. Sarwar They plotted and We planned without their knowledge. Consider the result of their plot.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem See how their scheming ended: We destroyed them utterly, along with all their people.
Yusuf Ali Then see what was the end of their plot!- this, that We destroyed them and their people, all (of them).
W. Khan See, then, what the consequences of their plan were. We destroyed them and their people utterly, all together.
M. Sarwar We destroyed them and their people altogether.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem As a result of their evil deeds, their homes are desolate ruins- there truly is a sign in this for those who know-
Yusuf Ali Now such were their houses, - in utter ruin, - because they practised wrong-doing. Verily in this is a Sign for people of knowledge.
W. Khan Because of their wrongdoing, their houses are in ruins—in that surely there is a sign for people who have knowledge—
M. Sarwar Those are their empty houses which We ruined because of their injustice. In this there is evidence (of the truth) for the people of knowledge.

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem but We saved those who believed and were mindful of God.
Yusuf Ali And We saved those who believed and practised righteousness.
W. Khan and We saved those who believed in and feared God.
M. Sarwar We saved the faithful God-fearing believers.

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem We also sent Lot to his people. He said to them, ‘How can you commit this outrage with your eyes wide open?
Yusuf Ali (We also sent) Lut (as a messenger): behold, He said to his people, "Do ye do what is shameful though ye see (its iniquity)?
W. Khan And tell of Lot. He said to his people, ‘Will you commit evil knowingly?
M. Sarwar Lot asked his people, "Do you understandably commit indecency?

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem How can you lust after men instead of women? What fools you are!’
Yusuf Ali Would ye really approach men in your lusts rather than women? Nay, ye are a people (grossly) ignorant!
W. Khan Must you go lustfully to men instead of women? Indeed, you are a people who are deeply ignorant.’
M. Sarwar Do you have carnal relations with men rather than women? You are ignorant people".

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem The only answer his people gave was to say, ‘Expel Lot’s followers from your town! These men mean to stay chaste!’
Yusuf Ali But his people gave no other answer but this: they said, "Drive out the followers of Lut from your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"
W. Khan The only answer of his people was, ‘Drive out Lot and his family from the city. They are a people who make themselves out to be pure.’
M. Sarwar His people had no answer but to say, "Expel Lot and his family from the town for they want to be pure."

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem We saved him and his family- except for his wife: We made her stay behind-
Yusuf Ali But We saved him and his family, except his wife; her We destined to be of those who lagged behind.
W. Khan So We delivered him and his family—except his wife: We ordained her to be one of those who stayed behind—
M. Sarwar We saved (Lot) and his family except his wife who was destined to remain behind.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem and We brought rain down on them. How dreadful that rain was for those who had been warned!
Yusuf Ali And We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)!
W. Khan and We pelted them with torrential rain. How dreadful that rain was for those who had been warned!
M. Sarwar We sent to them a terrible rainstorm. How horrible was the rain for the people who had already received warning.

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘Praise be to God and peace on the servants He has chosen. Who is better: God, or those they set up as partners with Him?
Yusuf Ali Say: Praise be to Allah, and Peace on his servants whom He has chosen (for his Message). (Who) is better?- Allah or the false gods they associate (with Him)?
W. Khan Say, ‘All praise be to God, and peace be upon those servants of His whom He has chosen. Is God better, or what they associate with Him?
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "It is only God who deserves all praise. Peace be upon His chosen servants. Which is better God or the idols?

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem Who created the heavens and earth? Who sends down water from the sky for you- with which We cause gardens of delight to grow: you have no power to make the trees grow in them- is it another god beside God? No! But they are people who take others to be equal with God.
Yusuf Ali Or, Who has created the heavens and the earth, and Who sends you down rain from the sky? Yea, with it We cause to grow well-planted orchards full of beauty of delight: it is not in your power to cause the growth of the trees in them. (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, they are a people who swerve from justice.
W. Khan Who created the heavens and the earth and sends down water for you from the sky, by which We make luxuriant gardens grow—you could never make such trees grow in them— is it another deity besides God? No indeed, but they are a people who equate others with Him.
M. Sarwar "(Are the idols worthier or) the One who has created the heavens and the earth, who has sent water from the sky for you, who has established delightful gardens and you could not even plant one tree? Is there any Lord besides God? In fact, the unbelievers are the ones who deviate from the right path.

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem Who is it that made the earth a stable place to live? Who made rivers flow through it? Who set immovable mountains on it and created a barrier between the fresh and salt water? Is it another god beside God? No! But most of them do not know.
Yusuf Ali Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, most of them know not.
W. Khan Who is it that made the earth a stable place to live in? Who made rivers flow through it? Who set mountains upon it and placed a barrier between the two seas? Is there another deity besides God? Indeed, most of them have no knowledge.
M. Sarwar "(Are the idols worthier or) the One who has made the earth a resting place, the rivers flow from its valleys, the mountains as anchors and a barrier between the two seas? Is there any lord besides God? In fact, most people do not know.

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem Who is it that answers the distressed when they call upon Him? Who removes their suffering? Who makes you successors in the earth? Is it another god beside God? Little notice you take!
Yusuf Ali Or, Who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and Who relieves its suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that ye heed!
W. Khan Who responds to the oppressed when he calls out to Him, and relieves his suffering and who will make you inheritors of the earth? Then, is there a god besides God? How little you pay heed!
M. Sarwar "(Are the idols worthier or) the One who answers the prayers of the distressed ones, removes their hardship, and makes you the successors in the land? Is there any lord besides God? In fact, you take very little heed.

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem Who is it that guides you through the darkness on land and sea? Who sends the winds as heralds of good news before His mercy? Is it another god beside God? God is far above the partners they put beside him!
Yusuf Ali Or, Who guides you through the depths of darkness on land and sea, and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy? (Can there be another) god besides Allah?- High is Allah above what they associate with Him!
W. Khan Who guides you in the darkness of the land and sea? Who sends the breezes as heralds of His mercy? Then, is there a deity besides God? Exalted is God above what they associate with Him.
M. Sarwar "(Are the idols worthier or) the One who guides you in the darkness of the land and sea and sends the winds bearing the glad news of His mercy? Is there any lord besides God? God is too exalted to be considered equal to anything else.

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem Who is it that creates life and reproduces it? Who is it that gives you provision from the heavens and earth? Is it another god beside God?’ Say, ‘Show me your evidence then, if what you say is true.’
Yusuf Ali Or, Who originates creation, then repeats it, and who gives you sustenance from heaven and earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Say, "Bring forth your argument, if ye are telling the truth!"
W. Khan Who originates creation, then regenerates it, and who gives you sustenance from heaven and earth? Then, is there a deity besides God?’ Say, ‘Bring forward your proofs, if you are telling the truth.’
M. Sarwar "(Are the idols worthier or) the One who began the creation and who will turn it back, who gives you sustenance from the heavens and the earth? Is there any lord besides God? Say, "Bring your proof if what you say is true."

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘No one in the heavens or on earth knows the unseen except God.’ They do not know when they will be raised from the dead:
Yusuf Ali Say: None in the heavens or on earth, except Allah, knows what is hidden: nor can they perceive when they shall be raised up (for Judgment).
W. Khan Say, ‘No one in the heavens and the earth has knowledge of the unseen except God.’They do not know when they will be raised up again.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad) say, "No one in the heavens or the earth knows the unseen except God, and no one knows when they will be resurrected.

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem their knowledge cannot comprehend the Hereafter; they are in doubt about it; they are blind to it.
Yusuf Ali Still less can their knowledge comprehend the Hereafter: Nay, they are in doubt and uncertainty thereanent; nay, they are blind thereunto!
W. Khan Indeed, their knowledge of the life to come stops short of the truth: they are [often] in doubt as to its reality: in fact, they are blind to it.
M. Sarwar Their knowledge of the next life is no more than doubts. In fact, they are blind about it.

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem So the disbelievers say, ‘What! When we and our forefathers have become dust, shall we be brought back to life again?
Yusuf Ali The Unbelievers say: "What! when we become dust,- we and our fathers,- shall we really be raised (from the dead)?
W. Khan Those who deny the truth say, ‘When we have turned to dust like our fathers, shall we be brought back to life again?
M. Sarwar The unbelievers have said, "Shall we and our fathers be brought out of the graves after we become dust?

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem We have heard such promises before, and so did our forefathers. These are just ancient fables.’
Yusuf Ali "It is true we were promised this,- we and our fathers before (us): these are nothing but tales of the ancients."
W. Khan We and our fathers were promised this before; these are but old stories.’
M. Sarwar It was promised to us and to our fathers before us. It is only ancient legends."

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], say, ‘Travel through the earth and see how the evildoers ended up.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Go ye through the earth and see what has been the end of those guilty (of sin)."
W. Khan Say, ‘Roam across the earth and observe what was the end of the sinful ones.’
M. Sarwar Say, "Travel through the land and see how terrible was the end of the criminal ones".

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do not grieve over them; do not be distressed by their schemes.
Yusuf Ali But grieve not over them, nor distress thyself because of their plots.
W. Khan Do not grieve over them, nor feel distressed at their schemes.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), do not be grieved (about their disbelief) nor distressed about their evil plans against you.

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem They also say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled if what you say is true?’
Yusuf Ali They also say: "When will this promise (come to pass)? (Say) if ye are truthful."
W. Khan They ask, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say be true?’
M. Sarwar They ask, "When the Day of Judgment will come, if it is true at all?"

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Maybe some of what you seek to hasten is near at hand.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "It may be that some of the events which ye wish to hasten on may be (close) in your pursuit!"
W. Khan Say, ‘It may be that a part of what you would hasten on is close behind you.’
M. Sarwar Say, "Perhaps some of the things which you wish to experience immediately are very close to you."

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem Your Lord is bountiful to people, though most of them are ungrateful.
Yusuf Ali But verily thy Lord is full of grace to mankind: Yet most of them are ungrateful.
W. Khan Truly, your Lord is bountiful to mankind, but most of them are not grateful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord has many favors for mankind but most of them are ungrateful.

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem He knows everything their hearts conceal and everything they reveal:
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord knoweth all that their hearts do hide. As well as all that they reveal.
W. Khan The Lord knows full well what they conceal in their hearts and what they disclose:
M. Sarwar Your Lord certainly knows whatever their hearts conceal or reveal.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem there is nothing hidden in the heavens or on earth that is not in a clear Record.
Yusuf Ali Nor is there aught of the unseen, in heaven or earth, but is (recorded) in a clear record.
W. Khan there is nothing hidden in heaven and on earth, but is recorded in a clear Book.
M. Sarwar All the secrets in heavens and earth are recorded in the illustrious Book.

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem Truly, this Quran explains to the Children of Israel most of what they differ about,
Yusuf Ali Verily this Qur'an doth explain to the Children of Israel most of the matters in which they disagree.
W. Khan This Quran explains to the children of Israel much of what they differ over,
M. Sarwar This Quran tells the Israelites most of the matters about which they had disputes among themselves.

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem and it is guidance and grace for those who believe.
Yusuf Ali And it certainly is a Guide and a Mercy to those who believe.
W. Khan certainly it is guidance and a blessing for the believers.
M. Sarwar It is a guide and mercy for the believers.

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem Truly, your Lord will judge between them in His wisdom- He is the Almighty, the All Knowing-
Yusuf Ali Verily thy Lord will decide between them by His Decree: and He is Exalted in Might, All-Knowing.
W. Khan Certainly your Lord will decide between them in His wisdom—He is the Almighty, the All Knowing—
M. Sarwar Your Lord will judge among them according to His own decree. He is Majestic and All-Knowing.

Verse 79

Abdel Haleem so [Prophet], put your trust in God, you are on the path of clear truth.
Yusuf Ali So put thy trust in Allah: for thou art on (the path of) manifest Truth.
W. Khan so put your trust in God. Surely you are on the path of manifest truth.
M. Sarwar Trust in God for you follow the manifest truth.

Verse 80

Abdel Haleem You cannot make the dead hear, you cannot make the deaf listen to your call when they turn their backs and leave,
Yusuf Ali Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen, nor canst thou cause the deaf to hear the call, (especially) when they turn back in retreat.
W. Khan You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear your call, when they turn their backs on it,
M. Sarwar You cannot make the dead listen and the deaf are unable to hear calls. Thus, they turn back on their heels.

Verse 81

Abdel Haleem you cannot guide the blind out of their error: you cannot make anyone hear you except those who believe in Our signs and submit [to Us].
Yusuf Ali Nor canst thou be a guide to the blind, (to prevent them) from straying: only those wilt thou get to listen who believe in Our Signs, and they will bow in Islam.
W. Khan nor can you guide the blind out of their error. You can make only those hear you who believe in Our revelations and surrender themselves to Us.
M. Sarwar You cannot guide the straying blind ones. You can only make hear those who believe in Our revelations submissively.

Verse 82

Abdel Haleem When the verdict is given against them, We shall bring a creature out of the earth, which will tell them that people had no faith in Our revelations.
Yusuf Ali And when the Word is fulfilled against them (the unjust), we shall produce from the earth a beast to (face) them: He will speak to them, for that mankind did not believe with assurance in Our Signs.
W. Khan When God’s word is justly carried out against them, We will produce a dabbah[29] from the earth which will tell them that mankind had no real faith in Our signs.
M. Sarwar When the word about them comes true We shall make a creature appear to them on earth who will tell them that people had no faith in Our revelations.

Verse 83

Abdel Haleem The Day will come when We gather from every community a crowd of those who disbelieved in Our signs and they will be led in separate groups
Yusuf Ali One day We shall gather together from every people a troop of those who reject our Signs, and they shall be kept in ranks,-
W. Khan On that Day We shall assemble together a host from every community of those who cried lies to Our revelations and they will be grouped
M. Sarwar On the day when We resurrect from every nation a group from among those who had rejected Our revelations, they will be kept confined in ranks.

Verse 84

Abdel Haleem until, when they come before Him, He will say, ‘Did you deny My messages without even taking them in? Or what were you doing?’
Yusuf Ali Until, when they come (before the Judgment-seat), (Allah) will say: "Did ye reject My Signs, though ye comprehended them not in knowledge, or what was it ye did?"
W. Khan then, when they have arrived, He will say, ‘Did you deny My revelations, even though you did not have proper knowledge of them? Or what was it that you were doing?’
M. Sarwar When they will be brought into the presence of God, He will ask them, "Did you reject My revelations without fully understanding them. What did you know about them if you had any knowledge at all?

Verse 85

Abdel Haleem The verdict will be given against them because of their wrongdoing: they will not speak.
Yusuf Ali And the Word will be fulfilled against them, because of their wrong-doing, and they will be unable to speak (in plea).
W. Khan The verdict will be given against them, because they did wrong, and they will be speechless.
M. Sarwar They will become subject to punishment because of their injustice. Thus, they will not speak.

Verse 86

Abdel Haleem Did they not see that We gave them the night for rest, and the day for light? There truly are signs in this for those who believe.
Yusuf Ali See they not that We have made the Night for them to rest in and the Day to give them light? Verily in this are Signs for any people that believe!
W. Khan Do they not see that We have made the night for them to rest in and the day to give them light? There are certainly signs in that for people who believe.
M. Sarwar Have they not seen that We have created the night for them to rest and the day for them to see. In this there is evidence for the believing people.

Verse 87

Abdel Haleem On the Day the Trumpet sounds, everyone in heaven and on earth will be terrified- except such as God wills- and all will come to Him in utter humility.
Yusuf Ali And the Day that the Trumpet will be sounded - then will be smitten with terror those who are in the heavens, and those who are on earth, except such as Allah will please (to exempt): and all shall come to His (Presence) as beings conscious of their lowliness.
W. Khan On the Day when the trumpet is blown, whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be struck with terror, except for those whom God wishes to spare. All shall come to Him in utter humility.
M. Sarwar Everyone in the heavens and earth will be terrified on the day when the trumpet will be sounded except those whom God will save. Everyone will humbly come into the presence of God.

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem You will see the mountains and think they are firmly fixed, but they will float away like clouds: this is the handiwork of God who has perfected all things. He is fully aware of what you do:
Yusuf Ali Thou seest the mountains and thinkest them firmly fixed: but they shall pass away as the clouds pass away: (such is) the artistry of Allah, who disposes of all things in perfect order: for he is well acquainted with all that ye do.
W. Khan You see the mountains and think them firmly fixed. But they shall pass away as the clouds pass away. Such is the work of God, who has ordered all things to perfection: He is fully aware of what you do.
M. Sarwar You think the mountains are solid. In fact, they move like clouds. It is God's technique which has established everything perfectly. He is well Aware of what you do.

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem whoever comes with a good deed will be rewarded with something better, and be secure from the terrors of that Day,
Yusuf Ali If any do good, good will (accrue) to them therefrom; and they will be secure from terror that Day.
W. Khan Whoever does a good deed, shall be rewarded with what is better, and will be secure from fear of that Day,
M. Sarwar Whoever does a good deed will receive a better reward than what he has done. He will be secure from the terror of the Day of Judgment.

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem but whoever comes with evil deeds will be cast face downwards into the Fire. ‘Are you rewarded for anything except what you have done?’
Yusuf Ali And if any do evil, their faces will be thrown headlong into the Fire: "Do ye receive a reward other than that which ye have earned by your deeds?"
W. Khan and those who do evil will be flung down on their faces in the Fire. Are you not rewarded according to your deeds?
M. Sarwar Those who commit evil will be thrown headlong into hell fire. (It will be said to them) can you expect any recompense other than what you deserve for your deeds?

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem [Say Prophet], ‘What I am commanded to do is to serve the Sustainer of this town, which He has made inviolable. Everything belongs to Him; I am commanded to be one of those devoted to Him;
Yusuf Ali For me, I have been commanded to serve the Lord of this city, Him Who has sanctified it and to Whom (belong) all things: and I am commanded to be of those who bow in Islam to Allah's Will,-
W. Khan Say, ‘I am commanded to serve the Lord of this town, which He has made inviolable and to whom everything belongs; I am commanded to be one of those devoted to Him;
M. Sarwar I am commanded to worship the Lord of this town which He has made sacred. To Him belong all things. I am commanded to be a Muslim

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem I am commanded to recite the Quran.’ Whoever chooses to follow the right path does so for his own good. Say to whoever deviates from it, ‘I am only here to warn.’
Yusuf Ali And to rehearse the Qur'an: and if any accept guidance, they do it for the good of their own souls, and if any stray, say: "I am only a Warner".
W. Khan to recite the Quran.’ Whoever follows its guidance, follows it only for the good of his own soul; and as for him who goes astray, just say, ‘I am only a warner.’
M. Sarwar and recite the Quran. Whoever seeks guidance will find it for his own soul. Say to whoever goes astray, "I am only a warner".

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Praise belongs to God: He will show you His signs so that you will recognize them.’ Your Lord is never unmindful of what you all do.
Yusuf Ali And say: "Praise be to Allah, Who will soon show you His Signs, so that ye shall know them"; and thy Lord is not unmindful of all that ye do.
W. Khan Then say, ‘Praise be to God! He will show you His signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do.’
M. Sarwar Say, "It is only He who deserves all praise. He will soon show you His signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do.
