The Qurʾān

Chapter 29

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Alif Lam Mim
Yusuf Ali A.L.M.
W. Khan Alif Lam Mim
M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Mim.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem Do people think they will be left alone after saying ‘We believe’ without being put to the test?
Yusuf Ali Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?
W. Khan Do people think that once they say, ‘We believe,’ they will be left alone and not be put to the test?
M. Sarwar Do people think they will not be tested because they say, "We have faith?"

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem We tested those who went before them: God will certainly mark out which ones are truthful and which are lying.
Yusuf Ali We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.
W. Khan We certainly tried those who have gone before them, so God will certainly distinguish between those who are truthful and those who are lying.
M. Sarwar We had certainly tried those who lived before them to make sure who were truthful in their faith and who were liars.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem Do the evildoers think they can escape us? How ill they judge!
Yusuf Ali Do those who practise evil think that they will get the better of Us? Evil is their judgment!
W. Khan Do those who do evil imagine that they will escape Us? How ill they judge!
M. Sarwar Do the evil-doers think they can escape Us? How terrible is their judgment?

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem But as for those who strive for their meeting with God, God’s appointed time is bound to come; He is the All Seeing, the All Knowing.
Yusuf Ali For those whose hopes are in the meeting with Allah (in the Hereafter, let them strive); for the term (appointed) by Allah is surely coming and He hears and knows (all things).
W. Khan He who hopes to meet God should know that God’s appointed hour is sure to come. He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
M. Sarwar Let those who have the desire to be in the presence of God on the Day of Judgment know that their day will certainly be coming. God is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem Those who exert themselves do so for their own benefit––God does not need His creatures––
Yusuf Ali And if any strive (with might and main), they do so for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation.
W. Khan And whoever strives, strives only for himself— God is independent of all His creation—
M. Sarwar Whoever strives hard should know that it is for his own good. God is independent of the whole world.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem We shall certainly blot out the misdeeds of those who believe and do good deeds, and We shall reward them according to the best of their actions.
Yusuf Ali Those who believe and work righteous deeds,- from them shall We blot out all evil (that may be) in them, and We shall reward them according to the best of their deeds.
W. Khan as for those who have faith and do good works, We shall certainly cleanse them of their evil deeds and reward them according to the best of their actions.
M. Sarwar We shall expiate the sins of the righteously striving believers and shall reward them better than their deeds.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem We have commanded people to be good to their parents, but do not obey them if they strive to make you serve, beside Me, anything of which you have no knowledge: you will all return to Me, and I shall inform you of what you have done.
Yusuf Ali We have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me (in worship) anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not. Ye have (all) to return to me, and I will tell you (the truth) of all that ye did.
W. Khan We have enjoined man to show kindness to his parents. But if they bid you associate with Me something about which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me you shall all return, and I shall tell you about all that you have done.
M. Sarwar We have advised the human being, "Be kind to your parents. Do not obey them if they force you to consider equal to Me things which you do not know are such." You will all return (to Me) and I shall show all that you have done.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem We shall be sure to admit those who believe and do good deeds to the ranks of the righteous.
Yusuf Ali And those who believe and work righteous deeds,- them shall We admit to the company of the Righteous.
W. Khan We shall surely admit those who believe and do good deeds to the company of the righteous.
M. Sarwar We shall admit the righteously striving believers into the company of the pious ones.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem There are some people who say, ‘We believe in God,’ but, when they suffer for His cause, they think that human persecution is as severe as God’s punishment––yet, if any help comes to you [Prophet] from your Lord, they will say, ‘We have always been with you’. Does God not know best what is in everyone’s hearts?
Yusuf Ali Then there are among men such as say, "We believe in Allah"; but when they suffer affliction in (the cause of) Allah, they treat men's oppression as if it were the Wrath of Allah! And if help comes (to thee) from thy Lord, they are sure to say, "We have (always) been with you!" Does not Allah know best all that is in the hearts of all creation?
W. Khan Some profess to believe in God, but when they suffer for God’s cause they mistake the persecution of man for the punishment of God. But when help comes to you from God, they will say, ‘We have always been with you.’ Is not God fully aware of what is in the hearts of all creatures?
M. Sarwar Some people say, "We have faith in God." But when they face some hardship for His cause, they begin to consider the persecution that they have experienced from people as a torment from God. When your Lord grants you a victory, they say, "We were with you." Does God not know best what is in the hearts of every creature?

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem God will be sure to mark out which ones are the believers, and which the hypocrites.
Yusuf Ali And Allah most certainly knows those who believe, and as certainly those who are Hypocrites.
W. Khan Most certainly God will mark out those who believe and mark out those who are hypocrites.
M. Sarwar God certainly knows all about the believers and the hypocrites.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem Those who disbelieve say to the believers, ‘Follow our path and we shall bear [the consequences for] your sins,’ yet they will not do so––they are liars.
Yusuf Ali And the Unbelievers say to those who believe: "Follow our path, and we will bear (the consequences) of your faults." Never in the least will they bear their faults: in fact they are liars!
W. Khan Those who deny the truth say to the faithful, ‘Follow our way, and we will bear the burden of your sins.’ But they will bear none of their sins. They are surely lying.
M. Sarwar The unbelievers say to the believers. "Follow our way. We shall take the responsibility for your sins." They cannot take responsibility for any of the sins. They are only liars.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem They will bear their own burdens and others besides: they will be questioned about their false assertions on the Day of Resurrection.
Yusuf Ali They will bear their own burdens, and (other) burdens along with their own, and on the Day of Judgments they will be called to account for their falsehoods.
W. Khan They shall bear their own burdens, and other burdens besides. On the Day of Resurrection they shall be questioned about their false assertions.
M. Sarwar Besides the other burdens that they will have to carry, they will certainly be loaded with the burden of their own sins. They will be questioned on the Day of Judgment about what they had falsely invented.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem We sent Noah out to his people. He lived among them for fifty years short of a thousand but when the Flood overwhelmed them they were still doing evil.
Yusuf Ali We (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin.
W. Khan We sent Noah to his people and he lived among them for fifty short of a thousand years; then the deluge overtook them, for they were wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar We sent Noah to his people and he lived with them for nine hundred and fifty years, then the flood engulfed them for their injustice.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem We saved him and those with him on the Ark. We made this a sign for all people.
Yusuf Ali But We saved him and the companions of the Ark, and We made the (Ark) a Sign for all peoples!
W. Khan But We saved him and those who were with him in the Ark and made the event a sign for mankind.
M. Sarwar We saved Noah and the people in the Ark and made (their case) a miracle for the world.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem We also sent Abraham. He said to his people, ‘Serve God and be mindful of Him: that is better for you, if only you knew.
Yusuf Ali And (We also saved) Abraham: behold, he said to his people, "Serve Allah and fear Him: that will be best for you- If ye understand!
W. Khan Tell of Abraham. He said to his people, ‘Worship God and fear Him, that would be best for you, if only you knew.
M. Sarwar Abraham told his people, "Worship God and have fear of Him. It is better for you if only you knew it.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem What you worship instead of God are mere idols; what you invent is nothing but falsehood. Those you serve instead of God have no power to give you provisions, so seek provisions from God, serve Him, and give Him thanks: you will all be returned to Him.
Yusuf Ali "For ye do worship idols besides Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye worship besides Allah have no power to give you sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your return.
W. Khan You worship idols besides God and fabricate falsehoods. Those whom you worship besides God have no power to provide sustenance for you. So seek your sustenance from God and worship Him and be grateful to Him, for to Him you shall return.
M. Sarwar You worship idols besides God and you create falsehood. Whatever you worship besides Him cannot provide you with anything for your sustenance. Seek your sustenance from the bounties of God. Worship Him. Give Him thanks. To Him you will all return."

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem If you say this is a lie, [be warned that] other communities before you said the same. The messenger’s only duty is to give clear warning.’
Yusuf Ali "And if ye reject (the Message), so did generations before you: and the duty of the messenger is only to preach publicly (and clearly)."
W. Khan If you reject the truth, other communities before you also rejected the truth. The messenger’s responsibility is only to convey the message clearly.’
M. Sarwar If you, (pagans), call our (revelations) lies, certainly many generations living before you have also done the same thing. The duty of a Messenger is only to preach clearly.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Do they not see that God brings life into being and reproduces it? Truly this is easy for God.
Yusuf Ali See they not how Allah originates creation, then repeats it: truly that is easy for Allah.
W. Khan Do they not see how God originates creation, then reproduces it? That surely is easy for God.
M. Sarwar Have they not seen how God begins the creation and then turns it back? This is not difficult at all for God.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Travel throughout the earth and see how He brings life into being: and He will bring the next life into being. God has power over all things.
Yusuf Ali Say: "Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power over all things.
W. Khan Tell them, ‘Roam the earth and see how He originated creation. Then God will bring into being your second life. God has power over all things.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say to them, "Travel through the land and see how He has begun the creation and how He will invent the next life. God has power over all things.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem He punishes whoever He will and shows mercy to whoever He will. You will all be returned to Him.
Yusuf Ali "He punishes whom He pleases, and He grants Mercy to whom He pleases, and towards Him are ye turned.
W. Khan He punishes whom He will and shows mercy to whom He pleases. And to Him you shall be returned.
M. Sarwar He punishes or grants mercy to whomever He wants and to Him you will all return.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem You cannot escape Him on earth or in the heavens; you will have no one to protect or help you besides God.’
Yusuf Ali "Not on earth nor in heaven will ye be able (fleeing) to frustrate (his Plan), nor have ye, besides Allah, any protector or helper."
W. Khan You cannot defeat His purpose on earth or in heaven; nor have you any friend or helper besides God.’
M. Sarwar You cannot challenge God in the heavens or in the earth. No one besides God is your guardian or helper.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem Those who deny God’s Revelation and their meeting with Him have no hope of receiving My grace: they will have a grievous torment.
Yusuf Ali Those who reject the Signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter),- it is they who shall despair of My Mercy: it is they who will (suffer) a most grievous Penalty.
W. Khan Those who deny God’s revelations and the meeting with Him—it is they who have despaired of My mercy. They will suffer a grievous punishment.
M. Sarwar Those who have rejected God's revelations have no hope in receiving His mercy. They will face a painful torment.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem The only answer Abraham’s people gave was, ‘Kill him or burn him!’ but God saved him from the Fire: there truly are signs in this for people who believe.
Yusuf Ali So naught was the answer of (Abraham's) people except that they said: "Slay him or burn him." But Allah did save him from the Fire. Verily in this are Signs for people who believe.
W. Khan The only response of Abraham’s people was, ‘Kill him or burn him!’ But God saved him from the fire. Surely in this there are signs for people who believe.
M. Sarwar (Abraham's) people had no answer except suggesting, "Kill him or burn him." But God saved him from the fire. In this there is evidence (of truth) for the believing people.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem Abraham said to them, ‘You have chosen idols instead of God but your love for them will only last for the present life: on the Day of Resurrection, you will disown and reject one another. Hell will be your home and no one will help you.’
Yusuf Ali And he said: "For you, ye have taken (for worship) idols besides Allah, out of mutual love and regard between yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgment ye shall disown each other and curse each other: and your abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help."
W. Khan Abraham said, ‘You have taken up the worship of idols, instead of God, to promote friendship between yourselves in the present life. But on the Day of Judgement, you will disown and curse one another. Your abode will be the Fire and you will have no helpers.’
M. Sarwar Abraham said, "You believe in idols besides God only out of worldly love, but on the Day of Judgment you will reject and condemn each other. Your dwelling will be fire and no one will help you."

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Lot believed him, and said, ‘I will flee to my Lord: He is the Almighty, the All Wise.’
Yusuf Ali But Lut had faith in Him: He said: "I will leave home for the sake of my Lord: for He is Exalted in Might, and Wise."
W. Khan Lot was the one who believed in him and said, ‘I shall migrate to another land for the sake of my Lord. He is the Mighty One, the Wise One.’
M. Sarwar Only Lot believed in (Abraham) and said, "I seek refuge in my Lord, for He is Majestic and All-wise".

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem We gave Isaac and Jacob to Abraham, and placed prophethood and Scripture among his offspring. We gave him his rewards in this world, and in the life to come he will be among the righteous.
Yusuf Ali And We gave (Abraham) Isaac and Jacob, and ordained among his progeny Prophethood and Revelation, and We granted him his reward in this life; and he was in the Hereafter (of the company) of the Righteous.
W. Khan We gave him Isaac and Jacob and granted prophethood and the Book to his descendants. We gave him his reward in this life and in the Hereafter he shall dwell among the righteous.
M. Sarwar We granted Isaac and Jacob to Abraham and We bestowed upon his offspring, prophethood and the Book. We gave him his reward in this world and in the next life, he will be among the pious ones.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem And Lot: when He said to his people, ‘You practise outrageous acts that no people before you have ever committed.
Yusuf Ali And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you.
W. Khan We sent Lot to his people and he said to them, ‘Indeed you commit obscenity such as no people before you have ever committed.
M. Sarwar Lot told his people, "You are certainly committing the kind of indecency which no one in the world has committed before".

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem How can you lust after men, waylay travellers, and commit evil in your gatherings?’ the only answer his people gave was, ‘Bring God’s punishment down on us, if what you say is true.’
Yusuf Ali "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth."
W. Khan You approach men and waylay them on the road and commit depravities within your gatherings.’ But his people’s only reply was, ‘Bring down God’s punishment upon us, if what you say be true.’
M. Sarwar Do you engage in carnal relations with men, rob the travellers, and commit evil in your gatherings? His people had no answer but to say, "Bring upon us the torment of God if you are truthful".

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem So he prayed, ‘My Lord, help me against these people who spread corruption.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!"
W. Khan Lot prayed, ‘Lord, help me against this wicked people.’
M. Sarwar He prayed, "Lord help me against the evil-doing people."

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem When Our mes-sengers brought the good news [of the birth of a son] to Abraham, they told him, ‘We are about to destroy the people of that town. They are wrongdoers.’
Yusuf Ali When Our Messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said: "We are indeed going to destroy the people of this township: for truly they are (addicted to) crime."
W. Khan When Our messengers brought Abraham the good news [of the birth of Isaac] they [also] said, ‘We are indeed going to destroy the people of this city, for the people of this city are truly wrongdoers.’
M. Sarwar When Our angelic Messengers brought glad news to Abraham, they told him, "We are about to destroy the people of this town for their injustice".

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem Abraham said, ‘But Lot lives there.’ They answered, ‘We know who lives there better than you do. We shall save him and his household, except for his wife: she will be one of those who stay behind.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "But there is Lut there." They said: "Well do we know who is there : we will certainly save him and his following,- except his wife: she is of those who lag behind!"
W. Khan Abraham said, ‘But, Lot lives here.’ They answered, ‘We well know who lives here. We shall surely save him and his whole family, except his wife, who will be among those who stay behind.’
M. Sarwar Abraham said, "Lot is there in that town!" They said, "We know everyone there. We shall certainly save him and his family except his wife who will remain behind."

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem When Our messengers came to Lot, he was troubled and distressed on their account. They said, ‘Have no fear or grief: we shall certainly save you and your household, except for your wife- she will be one of those who stay behind-
Yusuf Ali And when Our Messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account, and felt himself powerless (to protect) them: but they said: "Fear thou not, nor grieve: we are (here) to save thee and thy following, except thy wife: she is of those who lag behind.
W. Khan When Our messengers came to Lot, he was troubled and distressed on their account. They said, ‘Have no fear or grief. We shall certainly save you and your household, except your wife—who will be among those who stay behind—
M. Sarwar When Our angelic Messengers came to Lot, he was grieved and depressed to see them. They told him, "Do not be afraid or grieved. We will rescue you and your family except your wife who will remain behind.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem and we shall send a punishment from heaven down on the people of this town because they violate [God’s order].’
Yusuf Ali "For we are going to bring down on the people of this township a Punishment from heaven, because they have been wickedly rebellious."
W. Khan We are surely going to bring down a punishment from heaven on the people of this town because of their depravities.’
M. Sarwar We will bring torment from the sky on this town because of the evil-deeds of its inhabitants".

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem We left some [of the town] there as a clear sign for those who use their reason.
Yusuf Ali And We have left thereof an evident Sign, for any people who (care to) understand.
W. Khan Surely the ruins We left of that city are a clear sign for a people who use their reason.
M. Sarwar We left manifest evidence (of the truth) there for the people of understanding.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem To the people of Midian We sent their brother Shuayb. He said, ‘My people, serve God and think ahead to the Last Day. Do not commit evil and spread corruption in the land.’
Yusuf Ali To the Madyan (people) (We sent) their brother Shu'aib. Then he said: "O my people! serve Allah, and fear the Last Day: nor commit evil on the earth, with intent to do mischief."
W. Khan To the people of Midian We sent their brother Shu‘ayb. He said, ‘My people, worship God, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not commit evil and spread corruption in the land.’
M. Sarwar We sent to the people of Midian their brother Shu`ayb. He told them, "Worship God. Have hope in the life to come. Do not spread evil in the land".

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem They rejected him and so the earthquake overtook them. When morning came, they were lying dead in their homes.
Yusuf Ali But they rejected him: Then the mighty Blast seized them, and they lay prostrate in their homes by the morning.
W. Khan But they rejected him, so the earthquake overwhelmed them and they were left lying prostrate on the ground in their homes.
M. Sarwar They rejected him so We jolted them with a violent earthquake and they were left motionless in their houses.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem [Remember] the tribes of 'Ad and Thamud: their history is made clear to you by [what is left of] their dwelling places. Satan made their foul deeds seem alluring to them and barred them from the right way, though they were capable of seeing.
Yusuf Ali (Remember also) the 'Ad and the Thamud (people): clearly will appear to you from (the traces) of their buildings (their fate): the Evil One made their deeds alluring to them, and kept them back from the Path, though they were gifted with intelligence and skill.
W. Khan The same happened to the tribes of ‘Ad and Thamud: this must be clear to you from their ruins. Satan made their actions seem good to them, and turned them away from the straight path, even though they were intelligent people.
M. Sarwar How the people of Ad and Thamud were destroyed is evident to you from their homes. Satan made their deeds seem attractive to them and prevented them from the right path, even though they had visions.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem [Remember] Qarun and Pharaoh and Haman: Moses brought them clear signs, but they behaved arrogantly on earth. They could not escape Us
Yusuf Ali (Remember also) Qarun, Pharaoh, and Haman: there came to them Moses with Clear Signs, but they behaved with insolence on the earth; yet they could not overreach (Us).
W. Khan Korah, Pharaoh, and Haman: Moses came to them with clear signs but they were arrogant in the land. They could not escape Us.
M. Sarwar Korah, the Pharaoh, and Haman were also destroyed. Moses had brought them illustrious miracles, but they were puffed-up with pride in the land and they could not defeat Us.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem and We punished each one of them for their sins: some We struck with a violent storm; some were overcome by a sudden blast; some We made the earth swallow; and some We drowned. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves.
Yusuf Ali Each one of them We seized for his crime: of them, against some We sent a violent tornado (with showers of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters): It was not Allah Who injured (or oppressed) them:" They injured (and oppressed) their own souls.
W. Khan So We seized each one for his sins; some We struck with a violent storm; some of them were overcome by a sudden blast, some were swallowed up by the earth and some We drowned. God did not wrong them: they wronged themselves.
M. Sarwar We punished all of these people because of their sin. Some of them were struck by a violent sand-storm, some by a blast of sound, others were swallowed up by the earth, and some were drowned (in the sea). God did not do injustice to them, but they had wronged themselves.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem Those who take protectors other than God can be compared to spiders building themselves houses- the spider’s is the frailest of all houses- if only they could understand.
Yusuf Ali The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the spider's house;- if they but knew.
W. Khan Those who take protectors other than God can be compared to the spider which builds itself a cobweb, but the frailest of all structures is the house of the spider, if they but knew it.
M. Sarwar The belief of considering other things as one's guardians besides God is as feeble as a spider's web. The spider's web is the frailest of all dwellings, if only they knew it.

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem God knows what things they call upon beside Him: He is the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali Verily Allah doth know of (every thing) whatever that they call upon besides Him: and He is Exalted (in power), Wise.
W. Khan God surely knows what they invoke besides Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise One.
M. Sarwar God knows whatever they worship besides Him; He is the Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem Such are the comparisons We draw for people, though only the wise can grasp them.
Yusuf Ali And such are the Parables We set forth for mankind, but only those understand them who have knowledge.
W. Khan Such are the comparisons We make for people, but only those understand them who have knowledge.
M. Sarwar These are parables which We tell to human being, but only the learned ones understand them.

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem God has created the heavens and earth for a true purpose. There truly is a sign in this for those who believe.
Yusuf Ali Allah created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): verily in that is a Sign for those who believe.
W. Khan God has created the heavens and the earth for a purpose; surely in this there is a sign for true believers.
M. Sarwar God has created the heavens and the earth for a genuine purpose. In this there is evidence (of the truth) for the believers.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], recite what has been revealed to you of the Scripture; keep up the prayer: prayer restrains outrageous and unacceptable behaviour. Remembering God is greater: God knows everything you are doing.
Yusuf Ali Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.
W. Khan Recite what has been revealed to you of the book, and pray regularly. Surely prayer restrains one from indecency and evil and remembrance of God is greater. God has knowledge of all your actions.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), recite to them what has been revealed to you in the Book and be steadfast in prayer; prayer keeps one away from indecency and evil. It is the greatest act of worshipping God. God knows what you do.

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem [Believers], argue only in the best way with the People of the Book, except with those of them who act unjustly. Say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us and in what was revealed to you; our God and your God are one [and the same]; we are devoted to Him.’
Yusuf Ali And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."
W. Khan Believers, argue only in the best way with the People of the Book, [but contend not at all] with such of them as are unjust. Say, ‘We believe in what has been revealed to us, and what has been revealed to you; our God and your God are one; and to Him we submit.’
M. Sarwar Do not argue with the People of the Book except only by the best manner, except the unjust among them. Tell them, "We believe in what is revealed to us and to you. Our Lord and your Lord is one. We have submitted ourselves to His will".

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem This is the way We sent the Scripture to you [Muhammad]. Those to whom We had already given Scripture believe in [the Quran] and so do some of these people. No one refuses to acknowledge Our revelations but the defiant.
Yusuf Ali And thus (it is) that We have sent down the Book to thee. So the People of the Book believe therein, as also do some of these (pagan Arabs): and none but Unbelievers reject our signs.
W. Khan Likewise We have sent down the Book to you. Those to whom We gave the scripture believe in it, and so do some of your own people. Only those who deny the truth reject Our revelations.
M. Sarwar We have revealed the Book to you. Some of the People of the Book and some of the pagans also believe in it. No one rejects Our revelations except the infidels.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem You never recited any Scripture before We revealed this one to you; you never wrote one down with your hand. If you had done so, those who follow falsehood might have had cause to doubt.
Yusuf Ali And thou wast not (able) to recite a Book before this (Book came), nor art thou (able) to transcribe it with thy right hand: In that case, indeed, would the talkers of vanities have doubted.
W. Khan You were not able to read any book before this, nor did you write one down with your hand. If you had done so, the followers of falsehood would have had cause to doubt it.
M. Sarwar You were not able to read or write before the Quran was revealed to you; otherwise, the followers of falsehood would have tried to confuse the matter.

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem But no, [this Quran] is a revelation that is clear to the hearts of those endowed with knowledge. No one refuses to acknowledge Our revelations but the evildoers.
Yusuf Ali Nay, here are Signs self-evident in the hearts of those endowed with knowledge: and none but the unjust reject Our Signs.
W. Khan But the Quran is a revelation that is clear to the hearts of those endowed with knowledge. Only the evil-doers refuse to acknowledge Our revelations.
M. Sarwar In fact, the Quran consists of illustrious verses that exist in the hearts of those who have knowledge. No one rejects Our revelations except the unjust ones.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem They say, ‘Why have no miracles been sent to him by his Lord?’ Say, ‘Miracles lie in God’s hands; I am simply here to warn you plainly.’
Yusuf Ali Ye they say: "Why are not Signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say: "The signs are indeed with Allah: and I am indeed a clear Warner."
W. Khan They say, ‘Why has no sign been given to him by his Lord?’ Say, ‘The signs are in the hands of God. I am but a plain warner.’
M. Sarwar They say, "Why a miracle is not sent to him from his Lord." Say, "Miracles are in the hands of God. I am simply a warner."

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem Do they not think it is enough that We have sent down to you the Scripture that is recited to them? There is a mercy in this and a lesson for believing people.
Yusuf Ali And is it not enough for them that we have sent down to thee the Book which is rehearsed to them? Verily, in it is Mercy and a Reminder to those who believe.
W. Khan Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent you down the Book to be recited to them? In this surely there is a blessing and an admonition for a people who believe.
M. Sarwar Is it not enough for them that We have revealed the Book to you to be recited to them. It is a mercy and a reminder for the believers.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘God is sufficient witness between me and you: He knows what is in the heavens and earth. Those who believe in false deities and deny God will be the losers.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Enough is Allah for a witness between me and you: He knows what is in the heavens and on earth. And it is those who believe in vanities and reject Allah, that will perish (in the end).
W. Khan Say, ‘God is sufficient as a witness between you and me. He knows all that is in the heavens and the earth. Those who believe in falsehood and reject God will surely be the losers.’
M. Sarwar Say, "God is sufficient as a witness between me and you. He knows all that is in the heavens and the earth." Those who have faith in falsehood and disbelieve in God are certainly lost.

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem They challenge you to hasten the punishment: they would already have received a punishment if God had not set a time for it, and indeed it will come to them suddenly and catch them unawares.
Yusuf Ali They ask thee to hasten on the Punishment (for them): had it not been for a term (of respite) appointed, the Punishment would certainly have come to them: and it will certainly reach them,- of a sudden, while they perceive not!
W. Khan They ask you to hasten the punishment. Had there not been an appointed time for it, the punishment would already have come to them. Indeed it will come down upon them suddenly and catch them unawares.
M. Sarwar They demand you to bring upon them torment immediately. Had not the time been fixed, the torment would certainly have approached them. It would have come to them suddenly and they would not have even realized how it came.

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem They challenge you to hasten the punishment: Hell will encompass all those who deny the truth,
Yusuf Ali They ask thee to hasten on the Punishment: but, of a surety, Hell will encompass the Rejecters of Faith!-
W. Khan They ask you to hasten the punishment, but surely, Hell is [already] encompassing those who deny the truth.
M. Sarwar They demand you to bring upon them the torment immediately. Hell will certainly engulf the unbelievers.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem on the Day when punishment overwhelms them from above and from below their very feet, and they will be told, ‘Now taste the punishment for what you used to do.’
Yusuf Ali On the Day that the Punishment shall cover them from above them and from below them, and (a Voice) shall say: "Taste ye (the fruits) of your deeds!"
W. Khan On the Day the punishment envelops them from above them and from underneath their feet, they will be told, ‘Taste [the punishment] for what you used to do!’
M. Sarwar They will be told on the Day of Judgment, when the torment will surround them from all sides, "Suffer the consequences of your deeds."

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem My believing servants! My earth is vast, so worship Me and Me alone.
Yusuf Ali O My servants who believe! truly, spacious is My Earth: therefore serve ye Me - (and Me alone)!

M. Sarwar My believing servants, My land is vast. Worship Me alone.

M. Sarwar Every soul will experience the agony of death and to Me you will all return.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem We shall lodge those who believed and did good deeds in lofty dwellings, in the Garden graced with flowing streams, there to remain. How excellent is the reward of those who labour,
Yusuf Ali But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness - to them shall We give a Home in Heaven,- lofty mansions beneath which flow rivers,- to dwell therein for aye;- an excellent reward for those who do (good)!-
W. Khan We shall lodge forever those who believe and do good works in the mansions of Paradise beside which rivers flow. How excellent is the reward of those who labour,
M. Sarwar We shall give mansions in Paradise wherein streams flow to the righteously striving believers and therein they will live forever. How blessed is the reward of the hard working people

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem those who are steadfast, those who put their trust in their Lord!
Yusuf Ali Those who persevere in patience, and put their trust, in their Lord and Cherisher.
W. Khan and who are steadfast and put their trust in their Lord.
M. Sarwar who have exercised patience and who have had trust in their Lord.

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem How many are the creatures who do not store their sustenance! God sustains them and you: He alone is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
Yusuf Ali How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (both) them and you: for He hears and knows (all things).
W. Khan How many creatures cannot fend for themselves! God provides for them and for you. He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
M. Sarwar There are many living creatures which do not carry their sustenance, but God provides them and you with sustenance. He is All-hearing and All-knowing.

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem If you ask the disbelievers who created the heavens and earth and who harnessed the sun and moon, they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Then why do they turn away from Him?
Yusuf Ali If indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded away (from the truth)?
W. Khan If you ask them who it is that has created the heavens and the earth and subjugated the sun and the moon, they will say, ‘God.’ How then are they turned away?
M. Sarwar If you ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth and has subdued the sun and moon?" They will say, "God has done it." So why are they wandering about!?

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem It is God who gives abundantly to whichever of His servants He will, and sparingly to whichever He will: He has full knowledge of everything.
Yusuf Ali Allah enlarges the sustenance (which He gives) to whichever of His servants He pleases; and He (similarly) grants by (strict) measure, (as He pleases): for Allah has full knowledge of all things.
W. Khan God gives abundantly to whom He will and sparingly to whom He pleases. God has full knowledge of all things.
M. Sarwar God increases the sustenance of whichever of His servants He wants and He determines their share. God has the knowledge of all things.

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem If you ask them, ‘Who sends water down from the sky and gives life with it to the earth after it has died?’ they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Praise belongs to God!’ Truly, most of them do not use their reason.
Yusuf Ali And if indeed thou ask them who it is that sends down rain from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death, they will certainly reply, "Allah!" Say, "Praise be to Allah!" But most of them understand not.
W. Khan And if you ask them who it is that sends down water from the sky and revives the earth with it after its death, they will surely answer, ‘God.’Then praise be to God. But most of them do not understand.
M. Sarwar If you ask them, "Who has sent down water from the sky to revive the dead earth?" They will say, "God has done it." Say, "It is only God who deserves all praise, but many of them do not understand."

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem The life of this world is merely an amusement and a diversion; the true life is in the Hereafter, if only they knew.
Yusuf Ali What is the life of this world but amusement and play? but verily the Home in the Hereafter,- that is life indeed, if they but knew.
W. Khan The life of this world is nothing but sport and a diversion. It is the life of the Hereafter which is the only true life, if they but knew it.
M. Sarwar The worldly life is not more than a childish game. It is the life hereafter which will be the real life, if only they knew it.

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem Whenever they go on board a ship they call on God, and dedicate their faith to Him alone, but once He has delivered them safely back to land, see how they ascribe partners to Him!
Yusuf Ali Now, if they embark on a boat, they call on Allah, making their devotion sincerely (and exclusively) to Him; but when He has delivered them safely to (dry) land, behold, they give a share (of their worship to others)!-
W. Khan When they board a vessel, they call on God, sincere in their faith for Him alone; but when He brings them safe to land, they begin to ascribe partners to Him.
M. Sarwar When they sail in a boat, they sincerely pray to God with pure faith. But when We bring them safely to land, they start considering things equal to God.

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem Let them show their ingratitude for what We have given them; let them take their enjoyment- soon they will know.
Yusuf Ali Disdaining ungratefully Our gifts, and giving themselves up to (worldly) enjoyment! But soon will they know.
W. Khan And thus they may show utter ingratitude for Our favours; let them enjoy themselves for a time. But they will soon come to know.
M. Sarwar Let them be ungrateful to what We have granted them. Let them enjoy themselves, but they will soon know (the consequences of their deeds).

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem Can they not see that We have made [them] a secure sanctuary though all around them people are snatched away? Then how can they believe in what is false and deny God’s blessing?
Yusuf Ali Do they not then see that We have made a sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from all around them? Then, do they believe in that which is vain, and reject the Grace of Allah?
W. Khan Have they not seen how We have granted them a safe sanctuary, though all around them people are snatched away? Would they still believe in falsehood, and deny the favour of God?
M. Sarwar Have the (pagans) not seen that We have made the holy precinct a safe place while all the people around are suffering terror. Do they believe in falsehood and disbelieve in God's bounties?

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem Who could be more wicked than the person who invents lies about God, or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is Hell not the home for the disbelievers?
Yusuf Ali And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects the Truth when it reaches him? Is there not a home in Hell for those who reject Faith?
W. Khan Who does greater wrong than he who invents a lie about God or rejects the truth when it comes to him? Is Hell not the home for those who deny the truth.
M. Sarwar Who is more unjust than one who invents falsehood against God or rejects the Truth after it has come to him? Is not hell the dwelling for the disbelievers.

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem But We shall be sure to guide to Our ways those who strive hard for Our cause: God is with those who do good.
Yusuf Ali And those who strive in Our (cause),- We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right.
W. Khan We will surely guide in Our ways those who strive hard for Our cause, God is surely with the righteous.
M. Sarwar We shall certainly guide those who strive for Our cause to Our path. God is certainly with the righteous ones.
