The Qurʾān

Chapter 3

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Alif Lam Mim
Yusuf Ali A. L. M.
W. Khan Alif Lam Mim
M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Mim.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem God: there is no god but Him, the Ever Living, the Ever Watchful.
Yusuf Ali Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal.
W. Khan God! There is no deity save Him, the Living, the Sustainer.
M. Sarwar God exists. He is the only Lord, the Everlasting and the Guardian of life.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem Step by step, He has sent the Scripture down to you [Prophet] with the Truth, confirming what went before: He sent down the Torah and the Gospel
Yusuf Ali It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).
W. Khan He has sent down the Book to you with truth, which fulfils [the predictions] in the Scriptures that preceded it: He sent down the Torah and the Gospel
M. Sarwar He has sent the Book (Quran) to you (Muhammad) in all Truth. It confirms the original Bible. He revealed the Torah and the Gospel

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem earlier as a guide for people and He has sent down the distinction [between right and wrong]. Those who deny God’s revelations will suffer severe torment: God is almighty and capable of retribution.
Yusuf Ali Then those who reject Faith in the Signs of Allah will suffer the severest penalty, and Allah is Exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution.
W. Khan in the past as guidance for mankind; He has [also] sent down the Standard by which to discern the true from the false. Surely those who deny God’s signs will suffer severe punishment. God is mighty and capable of retribution.
M. Sarwar before as a guide for the people and now He has revealed the criteria of discerning right from wrong. Those who reject the revelations of God will face the most severe torment. God is Majestic and capable to revenge.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Nothing on earth or in heaven is hidden from God:
Yusuf Ali From Allah, verily nothing is hidden on earth or in the heavens.
W. Khan Nothing on earth or in the heavens is hidden from God:
M. Sarwar Nothing in the heavens or the earth is hidden from God.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem it is He who shapes you all in the womb as He pleases. There is no God but Him, the Mighty, the Wise:
Yusuf Ali He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
W. Khan it is He who shapes you in the womb as He will. There is no deity save Him, the Mighty, the Wise One.
M. Sarwar It is God who shapes you in the wombs as He wills. He is the only Lord, the Majestic, and All-wise.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem it is He who has sent this Scripture down to you [Prophet]. Some of its verses are definite in meaning- these are the cornerstone of the Scripture- and others are ambiguous. The perverse at heart eagerly pursue the ambiguities in their attempt to make trouble and to pin down a specific meaning of their own: only God knows the true meaning. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in it: it is all from our Lord’- only those with real perception will take heed-
Yusuf Ali He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding.
W. Khan It is He who has sent down the Book to you. Some of its verses are clear and precise in meaning—they are the basis of the Book—while others are allegorical. Those with deviation in their hearts pursue the allegorical, so as to create dissension by seeking to explain it: but no one knows its meaning except God. Those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in it: it is all from our Lord.’ But only the wise take heed.
M. Sarwar It is God who has revealed the Book to you in which some verses are clear statements (which accept no interpretation) and these are the fundamental ideas of the Book, while other verses may have several possibilities. Those whose hearts are perverse, follow the unclear statements in pursuit of their own mischievous goals by interpreting them in a way that will suit their own purpose. No one knows its true interpretations except God and those who have a firm grounding in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All its verses are from our Lord." No one can grasp this fact except the people of reason.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem ‘Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Grant us Your mercy: You are the Ever Giving.
Yusuf Ali "Our Lord!" (they say), "Let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thine own Presence; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure.
W. Khan ‘Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Bestow upon us Your mercy. Surely You are a Munificent Giver.
M. Sarwar They say, "Lord, do not cause our hearts to deviate from Your guidance, and grant us mercy. You are the Most Awarding One.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem Our Lord, You will gather all people on the Day of which there is no doubt: God never breaks His promise.’
Yusuf Ali "Our Lord! Thou art He that will gather mankind Together against a day about which there is no doubt; for Allah never fails in His promise."
W. Khan Our Lord, You will surely gather all mankind on the Day of whose coming there is no doubt. God never fails to fulfill His promise.’
M. Sarwar Lord, it is certain that one day You will gather all the people together. God does not break His promise."

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Neither their possessions nor their children will be any use to the disbelievers against God. The disbelievers will be fuel for the Fire,
Yusuf Ali Those who reject Faith,- neither their possessions nor their (numerous) progeny will avail them aught against Allah: They are themselves but fuel for the Fire.
W. Khan As for those who deny the truth, their wealth and children will not help them against God. They will be fuel for the Fire.
M. Sarwar The wealth and children of the unbelievers will never serve them as a substitute for their belief in God. Such people will be the fuel for the fire.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem just as Pharaoh’s people and their predecessors denied Our revelations, and God punished them for their sins: God is severe in punishing.
Yusuf Ali (Their plight will be) no better than that of the people of Pharaoh, and their predecessors: They denied our Signs, and Allah called them to account for their sins. For Allah is strict in punishment.
W. Khan Their end will be like Pharaoh’s people and those before them; they denied Our signs, so God seized them in their sinfulness: God is stern in punishment.
M. Sarwar They do as the people of Pharaoh and those who lived before them did. They called Our revelations mere lies. God punished them for their sins. God is stern in His retribution.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], say to the disbelievers, ‘You will be defeated and driven together into Hell, a foul resting place.
Yusuf Ali Say to those who reject Faith: "Soon will ye be vanquished and gathered together to Hell,-an evil bed indeed (to lie on)!
W. Khan Say to those who deny the truth, ‘You shall be overcome and driven into Hell—an evil resting place!’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell the unbelievers that they will soon be defeated and driven into Hell, a terrible dwelling.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem You have already seen a sign in the two armies that met in battle, one fighting for God’s cause and the other made up of disbelievers. With their own eyes [the former] saw [the latter] to be twice their number, but God helps whoever He will. There truly is a lesson in this for all with eyes to see.’
Yusuf Ali "There has already been for you a Sign in the two armies that met (in combat): One was fighting in the cause of Allah, the other resisting Allah; these saw with their own eyes Twice their number. But Allah doth support with His aid whom He pleaseth. In this is a warning for such as have eyes to see."
W. Khan There was a sign for you in the two groups which met face to face [at Badr], one party fighting for the cause of God and the other made up of those who deny the truth. The faithful saw with their own eyes that the others were twice their number: but God strengthens with His succour whom He wills. In this, there is indeed a lesson for all who have eyes to see.
M. Sarwar There, certainly, is evidence (of the existence of God) for you in the case of the two armies. One of them fought for the cause of God. The other were disbelievers. The disbelievers appeared to be twice the size of the believers. However, God supports through His help whomever He wants. It is a good lesson for the people of true vision.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem The love of desirable things is made alluring for men- women, children, gold and silver treasures piled up high, horses with fine markings, livestock, and farmland- these may be the joys of this life, but God has the best place to return to.
Yusuf Ali Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; Heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (To return to).
W. Khan The satisfaction of worldly desires through women, and children, and heaped-up treasures of gold and silver, and pedigreed horses, and cattle and lands is attractive to people. All this is the provision of the worldly life; but the most excellent abode is with God.
M. Sarwar Worldly desires, wives, children, accumulated treasures of gold and silver, horses of noble breed, cattle, and farms are all made to seem attractive to men. All these are the bounties of the worldly life but in the life to come God has the best place for people to dwell.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], say, ‘Would you like me to tell you of things that are better than all of these? Their Lord will give those who are mindful of God Gardens graced with flowing streams, where they will stay with pure spouses and God’s good pleasure- God is fully aware of His servants-
Yusuf Ali Say: Shall I give you glad tidings of things Far better than those? For the righteous are Gardens in nearness to their Lord, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their eternal home; with companions pure (and holy); and the good pleasure of Allah. For in Allah's sight are (all) His servants,-
W. Khan Say, ‘Shall I tell you of something better than all of these? For the God-fearing, there are Gardens in nearness to their God with rivers flowing through them where they shall live forever with pure spouses and the goodwill of God. God is watching His servants —
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them, "Shall I tell you what is far superior to worldly pleasures? Those who have fear of God will have (as their reward) gardens wherein streams flow and wherein they will live forever with their purified spouses and with the consent of God. God knows all about His servants."

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem those who say, “Our Lord, we believe, so forgive us our sins and protect us from suffering in the Fire,”
Yusuf Ali (Namely), those who say: "Our Lord! we have indeed believed: forgive us, then, our sins, and save us from the agony of the Fire;"-
W. Khan those who say, “Lord, we believe in You, forgive us our sins and keep us from the punishment of the Fire,”
M. Sarwar (Such will be the reward of) those who say, "Lord, we have believed in you. Forgive us our sins and save us from the torment of fire,"

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem those who are steadfast, truthful, truly devout, who give [in God’s cause] and pray before dawn for forgiveness.’
Yusuf Ali Those who show patience, Firmness and self-control; who are true (in word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the way of Allah); and who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning.
W. Khan those who are steadfast, truthful, obedient, and those who spend [for God’s cause] and who pray before dawn for forgiveness.’
M. Sarwar who exercise patience, speak the truth, who are devoted in prayer, spend their property for the cause of God and seek forgiveness from God during the last part of the night.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem God bears witness that there is no god but Him, as do the angels and those who have knowledge. He upholds justice. There is no god but Him, the Almighty, the All Wise.
Yusuf Ali There is no god but He: That is the witness of Allah, His angels, and those endued with knowledge, standing firm on justice. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Power, the Wise.
W. Khan God bears witness that there is no deity save Him, as do the angels and those who possess knowledge. He is the upholder of justice. There is no diety save Him, the Mighty, the Wise One.
M. Sarwar God Himself testifies that He is the only Lord. The angels and the men of knowledge and justice testify that God is the only Lord, the Majestic, and All-wise.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem True Religion, in God’s eyes, is islam: [devotion to Him alone]. Those who were given the Scripture disagreed out of rivalry, only after they had been given knowledge- if anyone denies God’s revelations, God is swift to take account-
Yusuf Ali The Religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account.
W. Khan The only true religion in God’s sight is complete submission to God. And those who were given the Book disagreed only out of rivalry, after knowledge had been given to them—he who denies God’s signs should know that God is swift in His reckoning.
M. Sarwar In the sight of God Islam is the religion. The People of the Book created differences in the matters (of religion) because of their hostility among themselves, only after knowledge had come to them. Let whoever denies the revelations of God know that the reckoning of God is swift.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem if they argue with you [Prophet], say, ‘I have devoted myself to God alone and so have my followers.’ Ask those who were given the Scripture, as well as those without one, ‘Do you too devote yourselves to Him alone?’ If they do, they will be guided, but if they turn away, your only duty is to convey the message. God is aware of His servants.
Yusuf Ali So if they dispute with thee, say: "I have submitted My whole self to Allah and so have those who follow me." And say to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned: "Do ye (also) submit yourselves?" If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, Thy duty is to convey the Message; and in Allah's sight are (all) His servants.
W. Khan If they dispute with you, say, ‘I have submitted my whole being to God and so have those who follow me.’ And ask those who have been given the Book, as well as the unlettered, ‘Do you submit yourselves to God in the same way?’ If they submit themselves to Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the message. God is observant of all His servants.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), if the People of the Book argue against you, say, "I and those who follow me have submitted ourselves to God." Ask the People of the Book and the illiterate ones, "Have you embraced Islam?" If they embrace Islam, they will find guidance but if they turn away, your task is just to preach. God knows all about His servants.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem Give news of agonizing torment to those who ignore God’s revelations, who unjustifiably kill prophets, who kill those who command that justice is done:
Yusuf Ali As to those who deny the Signs of Allah and in defiance of right, slay the prophets, and slay those who teach just dealing with mankind, announce to them a grievous penalty.
W. Khan Those who deny God’s signs and kill the prophets unjustly and kill those who enjoin justice—give them warning of a woeful punishment—
M. Sarwar Warn those who deny the revelations of God and unjustly slay the Prophets and those who call people to be just, that they will suffer a painful torment.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem the deeds of such people will come to nothing in this world and in the next and no one will help them.
Yusuf Ali They are those whose works will bear no fruit in this world and in the Hereafter nor will they have anyone to help.
W. Khan their deeds will come to nothing in this world as well as in the hereafter; they will have no supporters.
M. Sarwar The deeds of such people are made devoid of all virtue in both this life and the life to come. There will be no one to help them.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem Have you considered those who were given a share of the Scripture? When they are asked to accept judgement from God’s Scripture, some of them turn their backs and walk away, all because they declare,
Yusuf Ali Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who have been given a portion of the Book? They are invited to the Book of Allah, to settle their dispute, but a party of them Turn back and decline (The arbitration).
W. Khan Have you not seen those who received a portion of the Book? When they are invited to accept the judgement of God’s Book, a group of them turns away in aversion.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), consider those who have received a share of the Book. When they refer to the Book in order to judge amongst themselves, a group of them turn away with disregard

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem ‘The Fire will only touch us for a limited number of days.’ The lies they have invented have led them astray in their own religion.
Yusuf Ali This because they say: "The Fire shall not touch us but for a few numbered days": For their forgeries deceive them as to their own religion.
W. Khan That is because they say, ‘The Fire will touch us only for a limited number of days.’ Thus the false beliefs which they have invented have deluded them in the matter of their religion.
M. Sarwar because of their belief that the fire will only touch them for a few days. This fabricated belief has deceived them in matters of their religion.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem How will they fare when We gather them together for a Day of which there is no doubt, when every soul will be paid in full for what it has done, and they will not be wronged?
Yusuf Ali But how (will they fare) when we gather them together against a day about which there is no doubt, and each soul will be paid out just what it has earned, without (favour or) injustice?
W. Khan How will it be when We gather them all together upon a Day which is sure to come, when every human being shall be repaid in full for what he has done? They will not be wronged.
M. Sarwar What will happen to their belief when We bring them together on the Inevitable Day when every soul will be justly recompensed for its deeds?

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘God, holder of all control, You give control to whoever You will and remove it from whoever You will; You elevate whoever You will and humble whoever You will. All that is good lies in Your hand: You have power over everything.
Yusuf Ali Say: "O Allah! Lord of Power (And Rule), Thou givest power to whom Thou pleasest, and Thou strippest off power from whom Thou pleasest: Thou enduest with honour whom Thou pleasest, and Thou bringest low whom Thou pleasest: In Thy hand is all good. Verily, over all things Thou hast power.
W. Khan Say, ‘Lord, sovereign of all sovereignty. You bestow sovereignty on whom you will and take it away from whom You please; You exalt whoever You will and abase whoever You will. All that is good lies in Your hands. You have the power to will anything.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "Lord, Owner of the Kingdom, You give authority to whomever You want and take it away from whomever You want. You give honor to whomever You want and humiliate whomever You want. In Your hands is all virtue and You have power over all things.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem You merge night into day and day into night; You bring the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living; You provide limitlessly for whoever You will.’
Yusuf Ali "Thou causest the night to gain on the day, and thou causest the day to gain on the night; Thou bringest the Living out of the dead, and Thou bringest the dead out of the Living; and Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou pleasest, without measure."
W. Khan You cause the night to pass into the day, and the day into the night; You bring forth the living from the lifeless and the lifeless from the living. You give without measure to whom You will.’
M. Sarwar You cause the day to enter into the night and the night to enter into the day. You cause the living to come out of the dead and the dead to come out of the living. You give sustenance to whomever You want without keeping an account.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem The believers should not make the disbelievers their allies rather than other believers- anyone who does such a thing will isolate himself completely from God- except when you need to protect yourselves from them. God warns you to beware of Him: the Final Return is to God.
Yusuf Ali Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah.
W. Khan Let not the believers take those who deny the truth for their allies in preference to the believers—anyone who does that will isolate himself completely from God—unless it be to protect yourselves against them in this way.[3] God admonishes you to fear Him: for, to God shall all return.
M. Sarwar The believers must not establish friendship with the unbelievers in preference to the faithful. Whoever does so has nothing to hope for from God unless he does it out of fear or taqiyah (pious dissimulation). God warns you about Himself. To God do all things return.

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘God knows everything that is in your hearts, whether you conceal or reveal it; He knows everything in the heavens and earth; God has power over all things.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Whether ye hide what is in your hearts or reveal it, Allah knows it all: He knows what is in the heavens, and what is on earth. And Allah has power over all things.
W. Khan Say, ‘God knows everything that is in your heart, whether you conceal it or reveal it; He knows everything that the heavens and earth contain; God has power over all things.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "God knows all that you may conceal in your hearts or you may reveal. He knows all that is in the heavens and the earth. He has power over all things.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem On the Day when every soul finds all the good it has done present before it, it will wish all the bad it has done to be far, far away. God warns you to beware of Him, but God is compassionate towards His servants.
Yusuf Ali "On the Day when every soul will be confronted with all the good it has done, and all the evil it has done, it will wish there were a great distance between it and its evil. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself. And Allah is full of kindness to those that serve Him."
W. Khan On the Day when every human being will find himself faced with all the good that he has done, and with all the evil that he has done, many will wish that there were a long space of time between himself and that [Day]. God admonishes you to fear Him, but God is compassionate towards His servants.
M. Sarwar On the day when every soul will see its good and bad deeds right before its very eyes, it will wish for the longest period of time to separate it from its bad deeds. God warns you about Himself. God is Compassionate to His servants.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘If you love God, follow me, and God will love you and forgive you your sins; God is most forgiving, most merciful.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
W. Khan Say, ‘If you love God, follow me and God will love you and forgive you your sins. God is most forgiving, and most merciful.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "If you love God, follow me. God will love you and forgive your sins. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful."

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Obey God and the Messenger,’ but if they turn away, [know that] God does not love those who ignore [His commands].
Yusuf Ali Say: "Obey Allah and His Messenger": But if they turn back, Allah loveth not those who reject Faith.
W. Khan Say, ‘Obey God and the Messenger,’ and if they turn away, God does not love those who deny the truth.
M. Sarwar Tell them, "Obey God and the Messenger." If they turn away (let it be known) that God does not love the unbelievers.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem God chose Adam, Noah, Abraham’s family, and the family of Imran, over all other people,
Yusuf Ali Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of 'Imran above all people,-
W. Khan God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ‘Imran above all His creatures.
M. Sarwar God chose (and gave distinction to) Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and Imran over all the people of the world.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem in one line of descent- God hears and knows all.
Yusuf Ali Offspring, one of the other: And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
W. Khan They are the offspring of one another. God hears all and knows all.
M. Sarwar They were the offspring of one another. God is All-hearing and All-seeing.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem Imran’s wife said, ‘Lord, I have dedicated what is growing in my womb entirely to You; so accept this from me. You are the One who hears and knows all,’
Yusuf Ali Behold! a woman of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I do dedicate unto Thee what is in my womb for Thy special service: So accept this of me: For Thou hearest and knowest all things."
W. Khan Remember when the wife of ‘Imran said, ‘My Lord, I have dedicated what is in my womb entirely to Your service. So accept this from me. You are the One who hears and knows all.’
M. Sarwar Remember when Imran's wife prayed to her Lord saying, "I have made a vow to dedicate to Your service whatever is in my womb. Lord, accept it from me. You are All-hearing and All-knowing".

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem but when she gave birth, she said, ‘My Lord! I have given birth to a girl’- God knew best what she had given birth to: the male is not like the female- ‘ I name her Mary and I commend her and her offspring to Your protection from the rejected Satan.’
Yusuf Ali When she was delivered, she said: "O my Lord! Behold! I am delivered of a female child!"- and Allah knew best what she brought forth- "And no wise is the male Like the female. I have named her Mary, and I commend her and her offspring to Thy protection from the Evil One, the Rejected."
W. Khan When she gave birth, she said, ‘My Lord, I have given birth to a girl’—God knew very well what she had given birth to: a male is not like a female—‘I have named her Mary and placed her and her children in Your protection from the rejected Satan.’
M. Sarwar When the baby was born she said, "Lord, it is a female." God knew this. Male and female are not alike. "I have named her Mary. I pray that You will keep her and her offspring safe from Satan, the condemned one."

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Her Lord graciously accepted her and made her grow in goodness, and entrusted her to the charge of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah went in to see her in her sanctuary, he found her supplied with provisions. He said, ‘Mary, how is it you have these provisions?’ and she said, ‘They are from God: God provides limitlessly for whoever He will.’
Yusuf Ali Right graciously did her Lord accept her: He made her grow in purity and beauty: To the care of Zakariya was she assigned. Every time that he entered (Her) chamber to see her, He found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Mary! Whence (comes) this to you?" She said: "From Allah: for Allah Provides sustenance to whom He pleases without measure."
W. Khan Her Lord graciously accepted her and made her grow in goodness and entrusted her to the care of Zachariah. Every time Zachariah visited her in her chamber he found some provision with her. He asked, ‘Mary, where did this provision come from?’ She replied, ‘This is from God. God provides for whoever He wills without measure.’
M. Sarwar Her Lord graciously accepted the offer and made Mary grow up, pure, and beautiful. Zachariah took custody of her. Whenever he went to visit her in her place of worship, he would find with her some food. He would ask her, "Where did this food come from?" She would reply, "God has sent it." God gives sustenance to whomever He wants without keeping an account.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem There and then Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, ‘Lord, from Your grace grant me virtuous offspring: You hear every prayer.’
Yusuf Ali There did Zakariya pray to his Lord, saying: "O my Lord! Grant unto me from Thee a progeny that is pure: for Thou art He that heareth prayer!
W. Khan Thereupon Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, ‘Lord, grant me by Your own grace virtuous offspring. You are the hearer of all prayers.’
M. Sarwar Zachariah prayed to his Lord there, saying, "Lord, grant me, by Your Grace, virtuous offspring. You hear all prayers".

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem The angels called out to him, while he stood praying in the sanctuary, ‘God gives you news of John, confirming a Word from God. He will be noble and chaste, a prophet, one of the righteous.’
Yusuf Ali While he was standing in prayer in the chamber, the angels called unto him: "Allah doth give thee glad tidings of Yahya, witnessing the truth of a Word from Allah, and (be besides) noble, chaste, and a prophet,- of the (goodly) company of the righteous."
W. Khan As he stood praying in the chamber, the angels called out to him, saying, ‘God gives you the good news of John, who shall confirm the Word from God, and [shall be] outstanding among men, and utterly chaste, and a prophet from among the righteous.’
M. Sarwar When he was standing during prayer in his place of worship, the angels called him saying, "God gives you the glad news of the birth of your son, John who will be a confirmation of (Jesus) the Word of God. He will become a chaste, noble leader and one of the righteous Prophets.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a son when I am so old and my wife is barren?’ [An angel] said, ‘It will be so: God does whatever He will.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have son, seeing I am very old, and my wife is barren?" "Thus," was the answer, "Doth Allah accomplish what He willeth."
W. Khan ‘Lord,’ said Zachariah, ‘how shall I have a son when I am now overtaken by old age and my wife is barren?’ ‘Such is the will of God,’ replied [the angel], ‘He does what He pleases.’
M. Sarwar He said, "How can there be a son for me when I am already senile and my wife is barren." The angel replied, "God does as He wills."

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My Lord, give me a sign.’ ‘Your sign,’ [the angel] said, ‘is that you will not communicate with anyone for three days, except by gestures. Remember your Lord often; celebrate His glory in the evening and at dawn.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! Give me a Sign!" "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three days but with signals. Then celebrate the praises of thy Lord again and again, and glorify Him in the evening and in the morning."
W. Khan He said, ‘My Lord, grant me a sign.’ [The angel] said, ‘Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to people for three days except by signs. Remember your Lord much and glorify Him morning and evening.’
M. Sarwar Zachariah prayed to God saying, "Lord, show me the evidence (that it is Divine revelation)." The Lord replied, "You must not speak to people for three days except with gestures. Commemorate your Lord often and glorify Him in the early mornings and the evenings."

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem The angels said to Mary: ‘Mary, God has chosen you and made you pure: He has truly chosen you above all women.
Yusuf Ali Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee- chosen thee above the women of all nations.
W. Khan The angels said, ‘Mary, God has selected you and purified you. He has selected you over [all] the women of your time.

Abdel Haleem Mary, be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself in worship, bow down with those who pray.’
Yusuf Ali "O Mary! worship Thy Lord devoutly: Prostrate thyself, and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down."

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem This is an account of things beyond your knowledge that We reveal to you [Muhammad]: you were not present among them when they cast lots to see which of them should take charge of Mary, you were not present with them when they argued [about her].
Yusuf Ali This is part of the tidings of the things unseen, which We reveal unto thee (O Messenger!) by inspiration: Thou wast not with them when they cast lots with arrows, as to which of them should be charged with the care of Mary: Nor wast thou with them when they disputed (the point).
W. Khan This is an account of the unseen, which We reveal to you. You were not with them when they drew lots as to which of them should be Mary’s guardian and you were not with them when they disputed with one another.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), that was some of the news about the unseen, that We have revealed to you. You were not among those who cast lots by throwing their arrows to find out who would take custody of Mary, nor were you among those who disputed the matter.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem The angels said, ‘Mary, God gives you news of a Word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, who will be held in honour in this world and the next, who will be one of those brought near to God.

W. Khan When the angels said, ‘O Mary, your Lord gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honoured in this world and in the next and one of those who are granted nearness to God.
M. Sarwar "Behold," the angels told Mary, "God has given you the glad news of the coming birth of a son whom He calls His Word, whose name will be Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, who will be a man of honor in this life and the life to come, and who will be one of the ones nearest to God.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem She said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a son when no man has touched me?’ [The angel] said, ‘This is how God creates what He will: when He has ordained something, He only says, “Be”, and it is.

W. Khan ‘Lord,’ she said, ‘how can I have a child when no man has touched me?’ [The angel] replied, ‘Thus it is: God creates what He wills: when He wills a thing He need only say, “Be,” and it is.
M. Sarwar (Mary) said, "How can there be a son for me when no mortal has touched me?" The angel replied, "That is how God creates whatever He wants. When He decides to do something He just orders it to exist and it comes into existence."

Abdel Haleem He will teach him the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel,
Yusuf Ali "And Allah will teach him the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel,

M. Sarwar God will give (Jesus) wisdom and teach him the Book, the Torah, and the Gospel.

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem He will send him as a messenger to the Children of Israel: “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make the shape of a bird for you out of clay, then breathe into it and, with God’s permission, it will become a real bird; I will heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead back to life with God’s permission; I will tell you what you may eat and what you may store up in your houses. There truly is a sign for you in this, if you are believers.
Yusuf Ali "And (appoint him) a messenger to the Children of Israel, (with this message): "'I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah's leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by Allah's leave; and I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if ye did believe;
W. Khan He will make him a messenger to the Children of Israel. He will say: “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I will make the shape of a bird out of clay for you and then breathe into it and, by God’s leave, it will become a living bird. And by God’s leave I will heal the blind and the leper and bring the dead to life. I will tell you what you may eat and what to store up in your homes. Surely in this there is a sign for
M. Sarwar He will be a Messenger of God to the Israelites to whom he will say, "I have brought you a miracle from your Lord. I can create for you something from clay in the form of a bird. When I blow into it, it will become a real bird, by the permission of God. I can heal the blind and the lepers and bring the dead back to life, by the permission of God. W. Khan I you, if you are believers. come to fulfill [the prediction] of the Torah which preceded me and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you and I come to you with a sign from your Lord. So fear God and obey me.
M. Sarwar "I testify to what is true in the Torah and make lawful for you some of the things that were made unlawful. I have brought you a miracle from your Lord. Have fear of God and obey me.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem God is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him- that is a straight path.”’

W. Khan When Jesus perceived their denial, he said, ‘Who will be my helpers in God’s cause?’ The disciples said, ‘We are God’s helpers, we believe in God. Bear witness that we have surrendered ourselves.
M. Sarwar When Jesus found them denying the truth, he said, "Who will help me in the cause of God?" The disciples replied, "We are the helpers of God. We believe in Him. Jesus, bear witness that we have submitted ourselves to His will."

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem Lord, we believe in what You have revealed and we follow the messenger: record us among those who bear witness [to the Truth].’

W. Khan Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down and we follow the messenger, so count us among those who bear witness.’
M. Sarwar They prayed, "Lord, we have believed in what You have revealed to Your Messenger and we have followed him. Write down our names with those who testify in support of the Truth."

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem The [disbelievers] schemed but God also schemed; God is the Best of Schemers.
Yusuf Ali And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and Allah too planned, and the best of planners is Allah.
W. Khan And they schemed but God also schemed and God is the Best of Schemers.
M. Sarwar The unbelievers plotted and God planned, but God is a much better planner;

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem God said, ‘Jesus, I will take you back and raise you up to Me: I will purify you of the disbelievers. To the Day of Resurrection I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieved. Then you will all return to Me and I will judge between you regarding your differences.
Yusuf Ali Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute.
W. Khan God said, ‘O Jesus, I shall cause you to die and will raise you up to Me and shall clear you [of the calumnies] of the disbelievers, and shall place those who follow you above those who deny the truth, until the Day of Judgement; then to Me shall all return and I will judge between you regarding your disputes.
M. Sarwar He told Jesus, "I will save you from your enemies, raise you to Myself, keep you clean from the association with the disbelievers, and give superiority to your followers over the unbelievers until the Day of Judgment. On that day you will all return to Me and I shall resolve your dispute.

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem I will make the disbelievers suffer severely in this world and the next; no one will help them.’
Yusuf Ali "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."
W. Khan Those who deny the truth shall be sternly punished in this world and in the world to come: there shall be none to help them.’
M. Sarwar I shall sternly punish the unbelievers in this life and in the life to come and no one will help them.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem God will pay those who believe and do good deeds their reward in full; God does not love evildoers.
Yusuf Ali "As to those who believe and work righteousness, Allah will pay them (in full) their reward; but Allah loveth not those who do wrong."
W. Khan As for those who have believed and do good works, they shall be given their reward in full. God does not love evildoers.
M. Sarwar However, to the righteously striving believers I shall give their reward in full measure." God does not love the unjust.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem We relate to you [Muhammad] this revelation, a decisive statement.
Yusuf Ali "This is what we rehearse unto thee of the Signs and the Message of Wisdom."
W. Khan This which We recite to you is a revelation and a wise reminder.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), what we recite to you are revelations and words of wisdom.

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem In God’s eyes Jesus is just like Adam: He created him from dust, said to him, ‘Be’, and he was.
Yusuf Ali The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: "Be". And he was.
W. Khan Jesus in the sight of God is like Adam. He created him from dust; then said to him, ‘Be!’ and he was.
M. Sarwar To God the case of Jesus is as that of Adam whom He created from the earth and then said, "Exist," and Adam came into existence.

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be one of those who doubt.
Yusuf Ali The Truth (comes) from Allah alone; so be not of those who doubt.
W. Khan This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad, the essence of) the Truth is from your Lord. Never have any doubt about it.

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem If anyone disputes this with you now that you have been given this knowledge, say, ‘Come, let us gather our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, and let us pray earnestly and invoke God’s rejection on those of us who are lying.
Yusuf Ali If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge Hath come to thee, say: "Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!"
W. Khan And if anyone should argue with you about this [truth] after the knowledge you have received, say to them, ‘Come! Let us gather our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves; and then let us pray earnestly and invoke the curse of God upon the liars.
M. Sarwar If anyone disputes (your prophesy) after knowledge has come to you, say, "Let each of us bring our children, women, our people, and ourselves to one place and pray to God to condemn the liars among us."

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem This is the truth of the matter: there is no god but God; God is the Exalted, the Decider.’
Yusuf Ali This is the true account: There is no god except Allah; and Allah-He is indeed the Exalted in Power, the Wise.
W. Khan This is the true account. There is no deity save Him. God is Mighty and Wise.’
M. Sarwar This is the true story (of Jesus). There is no Lord but God. It is God who is Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem If they turn away, [know that] God is well aware of anyone who causes corruption.
Yusuf Ali But if they turn back, Allah hath full knowledge of those who do mischief.
W. Khan And if they turn away, God knows well the evil-doers.
M. Sarwar If they turn away (from the Truth, let it be known that) God knows well the evil-doers.

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘People of the Book, let us arrive at a statement that is common to us all: we worship God alone, we ascribe no partner to Him, and none of us takes others beside God as lords.’ If they turn away, say, ‘Witness our devotion to Him.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will).
W. Khan Say, ‘People of the Book, let us come to a word common to us that we shall worship none but God and that we shall associate no partner with Him and that none of us shall take others, besides God, for lords.’ And if they turn away, say, ‘Bear witness that we have submitted to God.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say to the People of the Book, "We must come to a common term. Let us worship no one except God, nor consider anything equal to Him, nor regard any of us as our Lord besides God." However, if they turn away from (the Truth), tell them, "Bear witness that we have submitted ourselves to the will of God."

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem People of the Book, why do you argue about Abraham when the Torah and the Gospels were not revealed until after his time? Do you not understand?
Yusuf Ali Ye People of the Book! Why dispute ye about Abraham, when the Law and the Gospel Were not revealed Till after him? Have ye no understanding?
W. Khan People of the Book, why do you dispute about Abraham when the Torah and Gospel were only sent down after him. Do you not use your reason?
M. Sarwar Ask the People of the Book, "Why do you argue about Abraham? The Torah and Gospel were revealed only after him. Why do you not understand?

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem You argue about some things of which you have some knowledge, but why do you argue about things of which you know nothing? God knows and you do not.
Yusuf Ali Ah! Ye are those who fell to disputing (Even) in matters of which ye had some knowledge! but why dispute ye in matters of which ye have no knowledge? It is Allah Who knows, and ye who know not!
W. Khan You are those who disputed about things of which you had some knowledge. Must you now argue about things of which you have no knowledge? God knows, but you do not know.
M. Sarwar You even argue about what is already known to you. What can you learn from arguing about that which you have no knowledge? God knows but you do not know."

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. He was upright and devoted to God, never an idolater,
Yusuf Ali Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah's (Which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah.
W. Khan Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. He was an upright man, one who had surrendered himself to God. He was not one of those who associate partners with God.
M. Sarwar Abraham was not a Jew or a Christian. He was an upright person who had submitted himself to the will of God. Abraham was not a pagan.

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem and the people who are closest to him are those who truly follow his ways, this Prophet, and [true] believers- God is close to [true] believers.
Yusuf Ali Without doubt, among men, the nearest of kin to Abraham, are those who follow him, as are also this Prophet and those who believe: And Allah is the Protector of those who have faith.
W. Khan Surely, the people who are closest to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet [Muhammad], and those who believe in him. God is the guardian of the believers.
M. Sarwar The nearest people to Abraham, among mankind, are those who followed him, this Prophet (Muhammad) and the true believers. God is the Guardian of the true believers.

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem Some of the People of the Book would dearly love to lead you [believers] astray, but they only lead themselves astray, though they do not realize it.
Yusuf Ali It is the wish of a section of the People of the Book to lead you astray. But they shall lead astray (Not you), but themselves, and they do not perceive!
W. Khan Some of the People of the Book wish to lead you astray but they only lead themselves astray, though they do not realise it.
M. Sarwar A group among the People of the Book would love to mislead you but they mislead no one but themselves. However, they do not realize it.

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem People of the Book, why do you deny God’s revelations when you can see they are true?
Yusuf Ali Ye People of the Book! Why reject ye the Signs of Allah, of which ye are (Yourselves) witnesses?
W. Khan People of the Book! Why do you deny God’s signs, having been witnesses thereof?
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "People of the Book, why do you deny the revelation of God (the Quran) even though you know very well that it is from God?.

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem People of the Book, why do you mix truth with falsehood? Why do you hide the truth when you recognize it?
Yusuf Ali Ye People of the Book! Why do ye clothe Truth with falsehood, and conceal the Truth, while ye have knowledge?
W. Khan People of the Book! Why do you mix truth with falsehood and knowingly conceal the truth?
M. Sarwar Why do you mix truth with falsehood and knowingly hide the truth?"

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem Some of the People of the Book say, ‘At the beginning of the day, believe in what has been revealed to these believers [the Muslims], then at the end of the day reject it, so that they too may turn back,
Yusuf Ali A section of the People of the Book say: "Believe in the morning what is revealed to the believers, but reject it at the end of the day; perchance they may (themselves) Turn back;
W. Khan Some of the People of the Book say to one another, ‘Believe in what is revealed to the faithful in the morning and deny it in the evening, so that they [the Muslims] may themselves abandon their faith [in confusion].
M. Sarwar Some of the People of the Book say, "Believe in what is revealed to the Muslims during the day only and abandon it in the evening. This will perhaps make them give up their religion".

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem but do not sincerely believe in anyone unless he follows your own religion’- [Prophet], tell them, ‘True guidance is the guidance of God’- [they say], ‘Do not believe that anyone else could be given a revelation similar to what you were given, or that they could use it to argue against you in your Lord’s presence.’ [Prophet], tell them, ‘All grace is in God’s hands: He grants it to whoever He will- He is all embracing, all knowing-
Yusuf Ali "And believe no one unless he follows your religion." Say: "True guidance is the Guidance of Allah: (Fear ye) Lest a revelation be sent to someone (else) Like unto that which was sent unto you? or that those (Receiving such revelation) should engage you in argument before your Lord?" Say: "All bounties are in the hand of Allah: He granteth them to whom He pleaseth: And Allah careth for all, and He knoweth all things."
W. Khan Believe only in those who follow your own religion.’ Say to them, ‘Surely, the true guidance is the guidance from God.’ [But you think it is impossible that] someone else may be granted [revelation] such as you were granted—or else that they should contend against you before your Lord. Say, ‘All grace is in the hands of God; He grants it to whom He wills: for God is boundless, and all knowing,
M. Sarwar They also say, "Do not believe anyone except those who follow your religion, so that no one may have what you have received or may argue with you before your Lord." (Muhammad), tell them, "The only guidance is the guidance of God. All favors are in the hands of God. He grants His favors to whomever He wants. He is Munificent and All-knowing".

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem and He singles out for His mercy whoever He will. His grace is infinite.’
Yusuf Ali For His Mercy He specially chooseth whom He pleaseth; for Allah is the Lord of bounties unbounded.
W. Khan He singles out for His mercy whoever He pleases. God is the Lord of exceeding bounty.’
M. Sarwar God grants priority in granting mercy to whomever He wants. God's favors are great.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem There are People of the Book who, if you [Prophet] entrust them with a heap of gold, will return it to you intact, but there are others of them who, if you entrust them with a single dinar, will not return it to you unless you keep standing over them, because they say, ‘We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.’ They tell a lie against God and they know it.
Yusuf Ali Among the People of the Book are some who, if entrusted with a hoard of gold, will (readily) pay it back; others, who, if entrusted with a single silver coin, will not repay it unless thou constantly stoodest demanding, because, they say, "there is no call on us (to keep faith) with these ignorant (Pagans)." but they tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it.
W. Khan Among the people of the Book there are some who, if you entrust them with a heap of gold, will return it to you. But there are others of them who, if you entrust them with a single dinar, will not return it to you, unless you keep demanding it from them. That is because they say, ‘We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.’ They deliberately tell lies about God.
M. Sarwar If you entrust some of the People of the Book, with a large quantity of gold, they will return it to you while if you entrust others among them with a small quantity of gold, they will not give it back to you unless you keep insisting on its return. For they say, "We are not bound to keep our words with the illiterate people," and they themselves knowingly ascribe false statements to God.

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem No indeed! God loves those who keep their pledges and are mindful of Him,
Yusuf Ali Nay.- Those that keep their plighted faith and act aright,-verily Allah loves those who act aright.
W. Khan Indeed God loves those who honour their covenants and fear Him. God loves the righteous.
M. Sarwar Those who keep their promise and observe piety should know that God certainly loves the pious ones.

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem but those who sell out God’s covenant and their own oaths for a small price will have no share in the life to come. God will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection- He will not cleanse them [of their sins]- agonizing torment awaits them.
Yusuf Ali As for those who sell the faith they owe to Allah and their own plighted word for a small price, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter: Nor will Allah (Deign to) speak to them or look at them on the Day of Judgment, nor will He cleans them (of sin): They shall have a grievous penalty.
W. Khan Those who sell out God’s covenant and their oaths for a paltry price will have no share in the life to come on the Day of Resurrection. God will neither speak to them nor cast a look upon them on the Day of Judgement, nor will He purify them. For them there shall be a grievous punishment.
M. Sarwar Those who sell their covenant with God and their promises for a small price will have no share in the life hereafter. God will not speak to them nor will He look at them on the Day of Judgment nor will He purify them. They will face a painful torment.

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem There are some who twist the Scripture with their tongues to make you [people] think that what they say is part of the Scripture when it is not; they say it is from God when it is not; they attribute lies to God and they know it.
Yusuf Ali There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from Allah," but it is not from Allah: It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it!
W. Khan There are some among them who distort the Book by the way they speak to make you think that what they say is from the Book, whereas it is not. They say it is from God whereas it is not. Thus they tell a lie about God and they know it.
M. Sarwar A group among the People of the Book when reading the Bible, deliberately mispronounce words in order to change their meaning, try to show that what they have read is from the true Bible. In fact, what they have read is not from the true Bible. They say, "What we read is from God." In reality, it is not from God. They knowingly ascribe false statements to God.

Verse 79

Abdel Haleem No person to whom God had given the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood would ever say to people, ‘Be my servants, not God’s.’ [He would say], ‘You should be devoted to God because you have taught the Scripture and studied it closely.’
Yusuf Ali It is not (possible) that a man, to whom is given the Book, and Wisdom, and the prophetic office, should say to people: "Be ye my worshippers rather than Allah's": on the contrary (He would say) "Be ye worshippers of Him Who is truly the Cherisher of all: For ye have taught the Book and ye have studied it earnestly."
W. Khan No one to whom God has given the Scriptures and on whom He has bestowed wisdom and prophethood would say to men, ‘Worship me instead of God.’ [He would say rather], ‘Be devoted servants of God, for you have taught and studied the Scriptures.’
M. Sarwar God would never give the Book, authority, or prophesy to any person who would tell others to be his servants instead of being the servants of God. He would rather tell them to worship God for they had been teaching and studying the Book.

Verse 80

Abdel Haleem He would never command you to take angels and prophets as lords. How could he command you to be disbelievers after you had devoted yourselves to God?
Yusuf Ali Nor would he instruct you to take angels and prophets for Lords and patrons. What! would he bid you to unbelief after ye have bowed your will (To Allah in Islam)?
W. Khan Nor would he enjoin you to take the angels and the prophets as your lords; how could he command you to be disbelievers after you have submitted to God.
M. Sarwar A Prophet would never order you to take the angels and the Prophets as your Lords. Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submitted yourselves to God?

Verse 81

Abdel Haleem God took a pledge from the prophets, saying, ‘If, after I have bestowed Scripture and wisdom upon you, a messenger comes confirming what you have been given, you must believe in him and support him. Do you affirm this and accept My pledge as binding on you?’ They said, ‘We do.’ He said, ‘Then bear witness and I too will bear witness.’
Yusuf Ali Behold! Allah took the covenant of the prophets, saying: "I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you a messenger, confirming what is with you; do ye believe in him and render him help." Allah said: "Do ye agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?" They said: "We agree." He said: "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."
W. Khan When God made a covenant with the prophets, He said, ‘Here is the Book and the wisdom which I have given you. When there comes to you a messenger fulfilling that [predictions about him in their Scripture] which is with you, you must believe in him and help him. Do you then affirm this and accept the responsibility I have laid upon you in these terms?’ They said, ‘We will affirm it.’ God said, ‘Then bear witness, and I will bear witness with you.’
M. Sarwar When God made a covenant with the Prophets, saying, "When I give you the Book and wisdom and a Messenger comes to you who will testify to the guidance which you have received from Me, you must believe in him and help him, then He asked them, "Do you affirm and accept my covenant?" They replied, "Yes, we affirm it." The Lord said, "Then bear witness to this and I shall bear witness with you".

Verse 82

Abdel Haleem Those who turn away after this are the ones who break pledges.
Yusuf Ali If any turn back after this, they are perverted transgressors.
W. Khan Now whoever turns away after this, are surely transgressors.
M. Sarwar After this, whoever turns away will be of the evil-doers.

Verse 83

Abdel Haleem Do they seek anything other than submission to God? Everyone in the heavens and earth submits to Him, willingly or unwillingly; they will all be returned to Him.
Yusuf Ali Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah?-while all creatures in the heavens and on earth have, willing or unwilling, bowed to His Will (Accepted Islam), and to Him shall they all be brought back.
W. Khan Do they seek a religion other than the religion of God, when everything in the heavens and the earth has submitted to Him, willingly or unwillingly? To Him they shall all return.
M. Sarwar Do they want a religion other than the religion of God when all that is in the heavens and the earth have submitted themselves to His will, either by their own free will or by force? To God do all things return.

Verse 84

Abdel Haleem Say [Muhammad], ‘We [Muslims] believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not make a distinction between any of the [prophets]. It is to Him that we devote ourselves.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another among them, and to Allah do we bow our will (in Islam)."
W. Khan Say, ‘We believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. It is to Him that we have surrendered ourselves.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "We believe in God and in that which has been revealed to us and in that which was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and their descendants. We believe in that which was given to Moses, Jesus, and the Prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between them and we have submitted ourselves to the will of God".

Verse 85

Abdel Haleem If anyone seeks a religion other than [islam] complete devotion to God, it will not be accepted from him: he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter.
Yusuf Ali If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good).
W. Khan If anyone seeks a religion other than Islam [submission to God], it will not be accepted from him; he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.
M. Sarwar No religion other than Islam (submission to the will of God) will be accepted from anyone. Whoever follows a religion other than Islam will be lost on the Day of Judgment.

Verse 86

Abdel Haleem Why would God guide people who deny the truth, after they have believed and acknowledged that the Messenger is true, and after they have been shown clear proof? God does not guide evildoers:
Yusuf Ali How shall Allah Guide those who reject Faith after they accepted it and bore witness that the Messenger was true and that Clear Signs had come unto them? but Allah guides not a people unjust.
W. Khan How would God bestow His guidance upon people who have opted for unbelief after having embraced the faith and having borne witness that this Messenger is true and [after] all evidence of the truth has come to them? For, God does not guide such wrongdoers:
M. Sarwar Why would God guide a people who disbelieves after having had faith, who have found the Messenger to be truthful, and who have received authoritative evidence? God does not guide the unjust.

Verse 87

Abdel Haleem such people will be rewarded with rejection by God, by the angels, by all people,
Yusuf Ali Of such the reward is that on them (rests) the curse of Allah, of His angels, and of all mankind;-
W. Khan such people will be rewarded with rejection by God, by the angels, by all mankind.
M. Sarwar What they will gain will be the condemnation of God, the angels, and all people,

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem and so they will remain, with no relief or respite for their suffering.
Yusuf Ali In that will they dwell; nor will their penalty be lightened, nor respite be (their lot);-
W. Khan In this state they shall abide forever; their punishment shall not be lightened nor shall they be granted respite.
M. Sarwar with which they will live forever. Their torment will not be relieved and no attention will be paid to them.

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem Not so those who afterwards repent and mend their ways- God is most forgiving and merciful-
Yusuf Ali Except for those that repent (Even) after that, and make amends; for verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan Except for those who afterwards repent and reform. God is forgiving and merciful;
M. Sarwar However, to those who repent afterwards and reform themselves, God is All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem [although] the repentance of those who, having believed, then increase in their disbelief, will not be accepted. They are the ones who have gone [far] astray:
Yusuf Ali But those who reject Faith after they accepted it, and then go on adding to their defiance of Faith,- never will their repentance be accepted; for they are those who have (of set purpose) gone astray.
W. Khan but as for those who are bent on denying the truth after accepting the true faith and grow in their refusal to acknowledge the truth, their repentance will not be accepted. They are the ones who have gone far astray.
M. Sarwar Those who disbelieve, after having been believers and increase their disbelief, are lost and their repentance will not be accepted.

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem those who disbelieve and die disbelievers will not be saved even if they offer enough gold to fill the entire earth. Agonizing torment is in store for them, and there will be no one to help them.
Yusuf Ali As to those who reject Faith, and die rejecting,- never would be accepted from any such as much gold as the earth contains, though they should offer it for ransom. For such is (in store) a penalty grievous, and they will find no helpers.
W. Khan Those who reject faith and die in the state of rejection will not be saved, even if they offer as ransom enough gold to fill the entire earth. Painful punishment is in store for them and they will have no supporters.
M. Sarwar From those who have rejected the truth and died in disbelief, no ransom will be accepted even though they may pay a whole earth of gold. They will suffer a painful torment and no one will help them.

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem None of you [believers] will attain true piety unless you give out of what you cherish: whatever you give, God knows about it very well.
Yusuf Ali By no means shall ye attain righteousness unless ye give (freely) of that which ye love; and whatever ye give, of a truth Allah knoweth it well.
W. Khan Never will you attain to righteousness unless you spend for the cause of God out of what you cherish; and whatever you spend is known to God.
M. Sarwar You can never have extended virtue and righteousness unless you spend part of what you dearly love for the cause of God. God knows very well whatever you spend for His cause.

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem Except for what Israel made unlawful for himself, all food was lawful to the Children of Israel before the Torah was revealed. Say, ‘Bring the Torah and read out [the relevant passage] if you are telling the truth.
Yusuf Ali All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel Made unlawful for itself, before the Law (of Moses) was revealed. Say: "Bring ye the Law and study it, if ye be men of truth."
W. Khan All food was lawful for the Children of Israel, except whatever Israel had made unlawful for himself before the Torah was sent down. Say to them, ‘Bring the Torah then and read it, if you are truthful.
M. Sarwar All food was lawful for the children of Israel except for what Israel had deemed unlawful for himself before the Torah was revealed. (Muhammad), ask them to bring the Torah and read it, if they are true in their claim (that all food was not unlawful for the children of Israel).

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem Those who persist in making up lies and attributing them to God after this are the wrongdoers.’
Yusuf Ali If any, after this, invent a lie and attribute it to Allah, they are indeed unjust wrong-doers.
W. Khan Those who, after this, persist in making up lies and attributing them to God are transgressors.’
M. Sarwar Whoever ascribes falsehood to God despite of all the evidence is unjust.

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], say, ‘God speaks the truth, so follow Abraham’s religion: he had true faith and he was never an idolater.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "Allah speaketh the Truth: follow the religion of Abraham, the sane in faith; he was not of the Pagans."
W. Khan Say, ‘God speaks the Truth, so follow the faith of Abraham. He was an upright man and he was not one of the polytheists.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "God has spoken the Truth. Follow the upright tradition of Abraham who was not an idolater."

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem The first House [of worship] to be established for people was the one at Mecca. It is a blessed place; a source of guidance for all people;
Yusuf Ali The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka: Full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings:
W. Khan The first House to be built for mankind was the one at Bakkah [Makkah]. It is a blessed place; a source of guidance for the whole world.
M. Sarwar The first house (of worship) that God assigned to men was in Bakka (another name of Mecca). It is a blessed one and a guide for all people.

Verse 97

Abdel Haleem there are clear signs in it; it is the place where Abraham stood to pray; whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by people who are able to undertake it. Those who reject this [should know that] God has no need of anyone.
Yusuf Ali In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures.
W. Khan There are clear signs in it; it is the place where Abraham stood. Anyone who enters it will be secure. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty to God for anyone who is able to undertake it. Anyone who disbelieves should remember that God is independent of all creatures.
M. Sarwar In (Bakka), there are many clear signs (evidence of the existence of God). Among them is the spot where Abraham stood. Whoever seeks refuge therein will be protected by the laws of amnesty. Those who have the means and ability have a duty to God to visit the House and perform the hajj (pilgrimage) rituals. The unbelievers should know that God is Independent of all creatures.

Verse 98

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘People of the Book, why do you reject God’s revelations? God witnesses everything you do.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O People of the Book! Why reject ye the Signs of Allah, when Allah is Himself witness to all ye do?"
W. Khan Say, ‘People of the Book, why do you reject God’s revelations when God is witness to all that you do?’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask the People of the Book, "Why do you deny the revelations of God when He is Well-Aware of your dealings?".

Verse 99

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘People of the Book, why do you turn the believers away from God’s path and try to make it crooked, when you yourselves [should be] witnesses to the [truth]? God is not heedless of anything you do.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O ye People of the Book! Why obstruct ye those who believe, from the path of Allah, Seeking to make it crooked, while ye were yourselves witnesses (to Allah's Covenant)? but Allah is not unmindful of all that ye do."
W. Khan Say, ‘People of the Book, why do you turn the believers away from the path of God, seeking to make it crooked, while you are witnesses thereof? God is not unaware of what you do.’
M. Sarwar Ask them, "Why do you create obstacles in the way of God for those who believe in Him, trying to make His way seem crooked when you know that it is straight? God is not unaware of what you do.

Verse 100

Abdel Haleem You who believe, some of those who were given the Scripture would turn you into disbelievers if you were to yield to them.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! If ye listen to a faction among the People of the Book, they would (indeed) render you apostates after ye have believed!
W. Khan O believers, if you yield to some of those who were given the Scripture, they will cause you to renounce the truth after you have believed.
M. Sarwar Believers, if you obey a certain group among the People of the Book, they will turn you back to disbelief.

Verse 101

Abdel Haleem How can you disbelieve when God’s revelations are being recited to you and His Messenger is living among you? Whoever holds fast to God will be guided to the straight path.
Yusuf Ali And how would ye deny Faith while unto you are rehearsed the Signs of Allah, and among you Lives the Messenger? Whoever holds firmly to Allah will be shown a way that is straight.
W. Khan But how can you deny the truth when God’s revelations are being conveyed to you and His own Messenger is in your midst? He who holds fast to God is indeed guided to the straight path.
M. Sarwar How could you turn back to disbelief when the words of God are recited to you and you have in your midst His Messenger? Those who seek the protection of God will certainly be guided to the right path.

Verse 102

Abdel Haleem You who believe, be mindful of God, as is His due, and make sure you devote yourselves to Him, to your dying moment.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
W. Khan Believers, fear God as is His due, and when death comes, be in a state of complete submission to Him.
M. Sarwar Believers, have fear of God as you should and die only as Muslims (having submitted to the will of God).

Verse 103

Abdel Haleem Hold fast to God’s rope all together; do not split into factions. Remember God’s favour to you: you were enemies and then He brought your hearts together and you became brothers by His grace; you were about to fall into a pit of Fire and He saved you from it- in this way God makes His revelations clear to you so that you may be rightly guided.
Yusuf Ali And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided.
W. Khan Hold fast to the cord of God and let nothing divide you. Remember the blessings He has bestowed upon you; you were enemies and then He united your hearts and by His grace you became brothers; you were on the brink of an abyss of Fire and He rescued you from it. Thus God makes His signs clear to you, so that you may find guidance.
M. Sarwar All of you united hold fast to the rope of God (the Quran and His Messenger), and recall how He favored you when your hostility to each other had torn you apart. He united your hearts in one faith and through His Grace you became brothers. You were on the verge of falling headlong into the abyss of fire, but God saved you. This is how God explains to you His revelations so that you may have the right guidance.

Verse 104

Abdel Haleem Be a community that calls for what is good, urges what is right, and forbids what is wrong: those who do this are the successful ones.
Yusuf Ali Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong: They are the ones to attain felicity.
W. Khan Let there be a group among you who call others to good, and enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong: those who do this shall be successful.
M. Sarwar Let there be a group among you who will invite others to do good deeds, command them to obey the Law, and prohibit them from committing sins. These people will have eternal happiness.

Verse 105

Abdel Haleem Do not be like those who, after they have been given clear revelation, split into factions and fall into disputes: a terrible punishment awaits such people.
Yusuf Ali Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into disputations after receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful penalty,-
W. Khan Do not be like those who, after they had been given clear evidence, split into factions and differed among themselves: a terrible punishment awaits such people.
M. Sarwar Do not be like those who turned into quarrelling sects after receiving clear authoritative evidence. They will suffer a great torment.

Verse 106

Abdel Haleem On the Day when some faces brighten and others darken, it will be said to those with darkened faces, ‘How could you reject your faith after believing? Taste the torment for doing so,’
Yusuf Ali On the Day when some faces will be (lit up with) white, and some faces will be (in the gloom of) black: To those whose faces will be black, (will be said): "Did ye reject Faith after accepting it? Taste then the penalty for rejecting Faith."
W. Khan On the Day when some faces are bright and some faces are dark, it will be said to those with darkened faces, ‘Did you reject faith after accepting it? Taste, then, this punishment for having denied the truth!’
M. Sarwar On the day when some faces will become white and others black, God will ask the people with the faces which have become black, "Why did you give up your faith? Now suffer the torment for your disbelief".

Verse 107

Abdel Haleem but those with brightened faces will be in God’s grace, there to remain.
Yusuf Ali But those whose faces will be (lit with) white,- they will be in (the light of) Allah's mercy: therein to dwell (for ever).
W. Khan But as for those with shining faces, they shall abide forever in God’s grace.
M. Sarwar The people whose faces have become white will enjoy the mercy of God with which they will live forever.

Verse 108

Abdel Haleem These are God’s revelations: We recite them to you [Prophet] with the Truth. God does not will injustice for His creatures.
Yusuf Ali These are the Signs of Allah: We rehearse them to thee in Truth: And Allah means no injustice to any of His creatures.
W. Khan These are God’s revelations; We recite them to you in all truth. God desires no injustice to mankind.
M. Sarwar Such are God's revelations which We explain to you, (Muhammad), for a genuine purpose. God does not want injustice for any of His creatures.

Verse 109

Abdel Haleem Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to God; it is to Him that all things return.
Yusuf Ali To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: To Him do all questions go back (for decision).
W. Khan His is all that the heavens and the earth contain. To God shall all things return.
M. Sarwar To God belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth and to Him do all things return.

Verse 110

Abdel Haleem [Believers], you are the best community singled out for people: you order what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in God. If the People of the Book had also believed, it would have been better for them. For although some of them do believe, most of them are lawbreakers-
Yusuf Ali Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors.
W. Khan You are indeed the best community that has ever been brought forth for [the good of] mankind. You enjoin what is good, and forbid what is evil, and you believe in God. If the People of the Book had also believed, it would have surely been better for them. Some of them are true believers, but most of them are disobedient.
M. Sarwar You are the best nation that ever existed among humanity. You command people to good and prohibit them from evil, and you believe in God. Had the People of the Book accepted the faith (Islam), it would certainly have been better for them. Some of them have faith, but most of them are evil doers.

Verse 111

Abdel Haleem they will not do you much harm: even if they come out to fight you, they will soon turn tail; they will get no help-
Yusuf Ali They will do you no harm, barring a trifling annoyance; if they come out to fight you, they will show you their backs, and no help shall they get.
W. Khan They can do you very little harm; if they come out to fight you, they will show you their backs; then they shall not be helped—
M. Sarwar They can never harm you beyond annoyance. In a fight, they will turn back in defeat and they will not be helped.

Verse 112

Abdel Haleem and, unless they hold fast to a lifeline from God and from mankind, they are overshadowed by vulnerability wherever they are found. They have drawn God’s wrath upon themselves. They are overshadowed by weakness, too, because they have persistently disbelieved in God’s revelation and killed prophets without any right, all because of their disobedience and boundless transgression.
Yusuf Ali Shame is pitched over them (Like a tent) wherever they are found, except when under a covenant (of protection) from Allah and from men; they draw on themselves wrath from Allah, and pitched over them is (the tent of) destitution. This because they rejected the Signs of Allah, and slew the prophets in defiance of right; this because they rebelled and transgressed beyond bounds.
W. Khan abasement shall attend them wherever they are found, unless they make a covenant with God or with man. They have incurred God’s wrath and have been utterly humbled, because they have persistently disbelieved in God’s signs and killed prophets unjustly. This resulted from their disobedience and their habit of transgression.
M. Sarwar Humiliation will strike them wherever they seek protection, except when they seek protection from God and the people. They have incurred the wrath of God unto themselves and have been struck with destitution for their rejection of the revelations of God and for unjustly murdering the Prophets. It is all because of their transgression and rebellion.

Verse 113

Abdel Haleem But they are not all alike. There are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite God’s revelations during the night, who bow down in worship,
Yusuf Ali Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration.
W. Khan Yet they are not all alike. Of the People of the Book there are some who stand by their covenant; they recite the word of God during the night and prostrate themselves before Him,
M. Sarwar The People of the Book are not all the same. Some of them are straightforward. They recite the words of God in prostration at night.

Verse 114

Abdel Haleem who believe in God and the Last Day, who order what is right and forbid what is wrong, who are quick to do good deeds. These people are among the righteous
Yusuf Ali They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous.
W. Khan who believe in God and the Last Day, who enjoin justice and forbid evil and vie with each other in good works. These are righteous men
M. Sarwar They believe in God and the Day of Judgment. They command people to follow good, prohibit others from committing evil and compete with each other in doing good deeds. These are the righteous ones.

Verse 115

Abdel Haleem and they will not be denied [the reward] for whatever good deeds they do: God knows exactly who is conscious of Him.
Yusuf Ali Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right.
W. Khan and they will not be denied [the reward] for whatever good deeds they do: God knows the righteous.
M. Sarwar They will never be denied the rewards of their good deeds. God knows well about the pious.

Verse 116

Abdel Haleem As for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will help them against God- they will be companions in the Fire, there to remain-
Yusuf Ali Those who reject Faith,- neither their possessions nor their (numerous) progeny will avail them aught against Allah: They will be companions of the Fire,-dwelling therein (for ever).
W. Khan As for those who deny the truth, neither their possessions nor their children shall avail them in the least against God. They will be inmates of the Fire. They will remain there for ever;
M. Sarwar The wealth and the children of the unbelievers can never make them independent of God. They are the dwellers of hell wherein they will live forever.

Verse 117

Abdel Haleem and whatever they give away in this life will be nullified: a frosty wind strikes and destroys the harvest of people who have wronged themselves. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves.
Yusuf Ali What they spend in the life of this (material) world May be likened to a wind which brings a nipping frost: It strikes and destroys the harvest of men who have wronged their own souls: it is not Allah that hath wronged them, but they wrong themselves.
W. Khan that which they spend in pursuit of the life of this world is like a biting frosty blast which smites the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves, and destroys it. God is not unjust to them; they are unjust to their own souls.
M. Sarwar What they spend in this life is like the freezing wind that may strike and destroy the farms of the people who have wronged themselves. God has not done injustice to them, but they have wronged themselves.

Verse 118

Abdel Haleem You who believe, do not take for your intimates such outsiders as spare no effort to ruin you and want to see you suffer: their hatred is evident from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made Our revelations clear for you; will you not use your reason?
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Take not into your intimacy those outside your ranks: They will not fail to corrupt you. They only desire your ruin: Rank hatred has already appeared from their mouths: What their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made plain to you the Signs, if ye have wisdom.
W. Khan Believers, do not take outsiders as your intimate friends, they will spare no effort to harm you. They love to see you suffer; their hatred is evident from the words which fall from their mouths. But what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made Our signs clear to you; will you not understand?
M. Sarwar Believers, do not expose your privacy to the unbelievers. They like to mislead you and see that you are seriously harmed. Signs of animosity from their mouths have already become audible, but what they hide in their heads is even worse. We have certainly made Our evidence clear, if only you would consider it.

Verse 119

Abdel Haleem This is how it is: here you are, you love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the Scriptures and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. [Prophet], say, ‘Die of rage [if you wish]!’ God knows exactly what is in everyone’s hearts.
Yusuf Ali Ah! ye are those who love them, but they love you not,- though ye believe in the whole of the Book. When they meet you, they say, "We believe": But when they are alone, they bite off the very tips of their fingers at you in their rage. Say: "Perish in you rage; Allah knoweth well all the secrets of the heart."
W. Khan It is you who love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the revealed Books. When they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips with rage. Say, ‘Die of rage!’ God is aware of what your hearts contain.
M. Sarwar There are people whom you love, but they do not love you, despite your belief in all the (heavenly) Books. On meeting you They proclaim belief on meeting you, but in private, bite their fingers at you in anger. Tell them, "Perish in your rage! God knows well what is in everyone's hearts".

Verse 120

Abdel Haleem They grieve at any good that befalls you [believers] and rejoice at your misfortunes. But if you are steadfast and conscious of God, their scheming will not harm you in the least: God encircles everything they do.
Yusuf Ali If aught that is good befalls you, it grieves them; but if some misfortune overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if ye are constant and do right, not the least harm will their cunning do to you; for Allah Compasseth round about all that they do.
W. Khan Whenever something good happens to you, it grieves them; but when evil befalls you, they rejoice. If you persevere and fear God, their designs will never harm you in the least: God encompasses all that they do.
M. Sarwar They hate to see your success and rejoice if any misfortune befalls you. If you will be patient and pious, their plots can cause no harm to you. God has control over all their actions.

Verse 121

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], remember when you left your home at dawn to assign battle positions to the believers: God hears and knows everything.
Yusuf Ali Remember that morning Thou didst leave Thy household (early) to post the faithful at their stations for battle: And Allah heareth and knoweth all things:
W. Khan When you set out at dawn from your home to assign battle positions to the believers—God hears all and knows all.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), remember the morning when you left home to show the believers their position in the battle? God is All-hearing and All-knowing.

Verse 122

Abdel Haleem Remember when two groups of you were about to lose heart and God protected them- let the believers put their trust in God-
Yusuf Ali Remember two of your parties Meditated cowardice; but Allah was their protector, and in Allah should the faithful (Ever) put their trust.
W. Khan When two groups from among you were about to lose heart, God was their protector. In God let the faithful put their trust.
M. Sarwar Two groups among you almost lost courage despite having God as their Guardian. The believers should always have trust in God.

Verse 123

Abdel Haleem God helped you at Badr when you were very weak. Be mindful of God, so that you may be grateful.
Yusuf Ali Allah had helped you at Badr, when ye were a contemptible little force; then fear Allah; thus May ye show your gratitude.
W. Khan God had already helped you at Badr, when you were weak. Fear God, so that you may be grateful.
M. Sarwar God gave you victory in the battle of Badr where your forces were much weaker than those of the enemy. Have fear of God so that you may give Him thanks.

Verse 124

Abdel Haleem Remember when you said to the believers, ‘Will you be satisfied if your Lord reinforces you by send-ing down three thousand angels?
Yusuf Ali Remember thou saidst to the Faithful: "Is it not enough for you that Allah should help you with three thousand angels (Specially) sent down?
W. Khan [And remember] when you said to the believers, ‘Does it not suffice that your Lord helps you by sending down three thousand angels?
M. Sarwar Also, remember when you said to the believers, "Is it not enough that your Lord is helping you with a force of three thousand angels sent (from the heavens)?"

Verse 125

Abdel Haleem Well, if you are steadfast and mindful of God, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand swooping angels if the enemy should suddenly attack you!’ and God arranged it so,
Yusuf Ali "Yea, - if ye remain firm, and act aright, even if the enemy should rush here on you in hot haste, your Lord would help you with five thousand angels Making a terrific onslaught.
W. Khan If you remain patient and God-fearing, and the enemy should fall upon you all of a sudden, Your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels clearly marked!’
M. Sarwar Certainly, if you have patience and piety, even if the enemy attacks immediately after this, God will help you with another force of five thousand angels, all splendidly ( and or distinctly marked) dressed.

Verse 126

Abdel Haleem as a message of hope for you [believers] to put your hearts at rest- help comes only from God, the Mighty, the Wise-
Yusuf Ali Allah made it but a message of hope for you, and an assurance to your hearts: (in any case) there is no help except from Allah. The Exalted, the Wise:
W. Khan and God ordained this only as good news for you so that your hearts might be comforted—help comes only from God, the Powerful, the Wise One—
M. Sarwar The sending of the angels is a glad news from your Lord so that you would have more confidence in Him. No victory is real unless it is from God, the Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 127

Abdel Haleem and in order to cut off the flanks of the disbelievers’ army and frustrate them, to make them withdraw in total defeat.
Yusuf Ali That He might cut off a fringe of the Unbelievers or expose them to infamy, and they should then be turned back, frustrated of their purpose.
W. Khan and so that He might cut off a portion of those who are bent on denying the truth or abase them so that they might be turned back frustrated.
M. Sarwar (They are sent) to break the power of the unbelievers or disgrace them and make them return after having lost all hope."

Verse 128

Abdel Haleem Whether God relents towards them or punishes them is not for you [Prophet] to decide: they are wrongdoers.
Yusuf Ali Not for thee, (but for Allah), is the decision: Whether He turn in mercy to them, or punish them; for they are indeed wrong-doers.
W. Khan You have no say in this affair to decide whether He will relent towards them or He will punish them: they are wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), it is not your concern whether He forgives them or punishes them for they are unjust.

Verse 129

Abdel Haleem Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to God. He forgives whoever He will and punishes whoever He will: God is most forgiving and merciful.
Yusuf Ali To Allah belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth. He forgiveth whom He pleaseth and punisheth whom He pleaseth; but Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth belong to God. He forgives whoever He pleases and punishes whoever He pleases. God is most forgiving and ever merciful.
M. Sarwar To God belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He may forgive or punish whomever He wants. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Verse 130

Abdel Haleem You who believe, do not consume usurious interest, doubled and redoubled. Be mindful of God so that you may prosper-
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Devour not usury, doubled and multiplied; but fear Allah; that ye may (really) prosper.
W. Khan Believers, do not devour usury multiplied many times over. Fear God, so that you may prosper—
M. Sarwar Believers, do not accept illegal interest in order to increase your wealth many times over. Have fear of God so that you will have everlasting happiness.

Verse 131

Abdel Haleem beware of the Fire prepared for those who ignore [Him]-
Yusuf Ali Fear the Fire, which is repaired for those who reject Faith:
W. Khan guard yourself against the Fire prepared for those who deny the truth—
M. Sarwar Save yourselves from the fire which is prepared for the unbelievers.

Verse 132

Abdel Haleem and obey God and the Prophet so that you may be given mercy.

Abdel Haleem Hurry towards your Lord’s forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth prepared for the righteous,
Yusuf Ali Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous,-
W. Khan And vie with one another for your Lord’s forgiveness and for a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, which has been prepared for the God-fearing,
M. Sarwar Hasten to obtain forgiveness from your Lord and to qualify yourselves for Paradise. Paradise, vast as the heavens and the earth, is prepared for the pious

Verse 134

Abdel Haleem who give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good-
Yusuf Ali Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;- for Allah loves those who do good;-
W. Khan for those who spend, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and are forgiving towards their fellow men—God loves those who do good works.
M. Sarwar who spend their property for the cause of God in prosperity as well as in adversity and who also harness their anger and forgive the people. God loves the righteous ones.

Verse 135

Abdel Haleem those who remember God and implore forgiveness for their sins if they do something shameful or wrong themselves- who forgives sins but God?- and who never knowingly persist in doing wrong.
Yusuf Ali And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls, earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins,- and who can forgive sins except Allah?- and are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.
W. Khan And who, when they have committed an indecency or have wronged their souls, remember God and pray that their sins be forgiven— for who but God can forgive sins?—and do not knowingly persist in their misdeeds,
M. Sarwar (Paradise) is also for those who, when committing a sin or doing injustice to themselves, remember God and ask Him to forgive their sins. Who can forgive sins besides God? And who do not knowingly persist in their mistakes?

Verse 136

Abdel Haleem The reward for such people is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens graced with flowing streams, where they will remain. How excellent is the reward of those who labour!
Yusuf Ali For such the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath,- an eternal dwelling: How excellent a recompense for those who work (and strive)!
W. Khan their recompense is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing through them, where they will abide forever. How excellent will be the reward of those who do good works.
M. Sarwar Their reward will be forgiveness from their Lord and gardens wherein streams flow and wherein they will live forever. How blessed is the reward of those who labor.

Verse 137

Abdel Haleem God’s ways have operated before your time: travel through the land, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved.
Yusuf Ali Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth.
W. Khan There are many examples [of the communities] that have passed away before you: travel through the land, and see what was the end of those who rejected the Truth.
M. Sarwar Different traditions existed in the past. Travel in the land and find out about the fate of those who rejected the Truth.

Verse 138

Abdel Haleem This is a clear lesson to people, and guidance and teaching for those who are mindful of God.
Yusuf Ali Here is a plain statement to men, a guidance and instruction to those who fear Allah!
W. Khan This Quran is an exposition for the people and a guidance and admonition for those who fear God.
M. Sarwar This (Quran) is a reminder for the people and a guide and advice for the pious.

Verse 139

Abdel Haleem Do not lose heart or despair- if you are true believers you have the upper hand-
Yusuf Ali So lose not heart, nor fall into despair: For ye must gain mastery if ye are true in Faith.
W. Khan And do not become faint of heart, nor grieve—you will have the upper hand, if you are believers—
M. Sarwar Do not be discouraged or grieved. You alone will have true dignity if you only are true believers.

Verse 140

Abdel Haleem if you have suffered a blow, they too have suffered one like it. We deal out such days among people in turn, for God to find out who truly believes, for Him to choose martyrs from among you- God does not love evildoers-
Yusuf Ali If a wound hath touched you, be sure a similar wound hath touched the others. Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men and men by turns: that Allah may know those that believe, and that He may take to Himself from your ranks Martyr-witnesses (to Truth). And Allah loveth not those that do wrong.
W. Khan if you have suffered a wound, they too have suffered a similar wound. We bring these days to men by turns, so that God may know those who believe, and choose witnesses from among you; and God does not love the unjust,
M. Sarwar If you get hurt, certainly others have also experienced injuries. We have made people pass through the different turns of history so that God would know the true believers, have some of you bear witness to the people's deeds, {God does not love the unjust}

Verse 141

Abdel Haleem for Him to cleanse those who believe and for Him to destroy the disbelievers.
Yusuf Ali Allah's object also is to purge those that are true in Faith and to deprive of blessing Those that resist Faith.
W. Khan so that God may purge those who believe and wipe out those who deny the truth.
M. Sarwar test the faith of the believers, and deprive the unbelievers of ( His) blessings.

Verse 142

Abdel Haleem Did you think you would enter the Garden without God first proving which of you would struggle for His cause and remain steadfast?
Yusuf Ali Did ye think that ye would enter Heaven without Allah testing those of you who fought hard (In His Cause) and remained steadfast?
W. Khan Do you suppose that you would enter the Garden, without God knowing those among you who would strive hard for His cause and endure with fortitude?
M. Sarwar Did you think that you could go to Paradise before God knew which of you fought for His cause and which of you bore patience?

Verse 143

Abdel Haleem Before you encountered death, you were hoping for it. Well, now you have seen it with your own eyes.
Yusuf Ali Ye did indeed wish for death before ye met him: Now ye have seen him with your own eyes, (And ye flinch!)
W. Khan You were longing for death, before you met it. Now you have seen it with your own eyes.
M. Sarwar You certainly wished to die (for the cause of God) before you actually faced death. Then you faced death (in the battlefield and only a few of you had the true desire to die).

Verse 144

Abdel Haleem Muhammad is only a messenger before whom many messengers have been and gone. If he died or was killed, would you revert to your old ways? If anyone did so, he would not harm God in the least. God will reward the grateful.
Yusuf Ali Muhammad is no more than a messenger: many Were the messenger that passed away before him. If he died or were slain, will ye then Turn back on your heels? If any did turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah; but Allah (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve Him) with gratitude.
W. Khan Muhammad is only a messenger. Messengers have passed away before him. If he should die, or be killed, will you turn back on your heels? Those who turn on their heels do not harm the Lord in the least. God will reward the grateful.
M. Sarwar Muhammad is only a Messenger. There lived other Messengers before him. Should (Muhammad) die or be slain, would you then turn back to your pre-Islamic behavior? Whoever does so can cause no harm to God. God will reward those who give thanks.

Verse 145

Abdel Haleem No soul may die except with God’s permission at a predestined time. If anyone strives for the rewards of this world, We will give him some of them. If anyone strives for the rewards of the Hereafter, We will give him some of them: We will reward the grateful.
Yusuf Ali Nor can a soul die except by Allah's leave, the term being fixed as by writing. If any do desire a reward in this life, We shall give it to him; and if any do desire a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall We reward those that (serve us with) gratitude.
W. Khan No soul shall die except with God’s permission and at an appointed time. And if one desires the rewards of this world, We shall grant it to him; and if one desires the rewards of the life to come, We shall grant it to him. We will reward the grateful.
M. Sarwar No one can die without the permission of God. This is a written decree of the appointed term for life. We shall give worldly gains to whoever wants them. Those who want rewards in the life hereafter will also receive them. We reward those who give thanks.

Verse 146

Abdel Haleem Many prophets have fought, with large bands of godly men alongside them who, in the face of their sufferings for God’s cause, did not lose heart or weaken or surrender: God loves those who are steadfast.
Yusuf Ali How many of the prophets fought (in Allah's way), and with them (fought) Large bands of godly men? but they never lost heart if they met with disaster in Allah's way, nor did they weaken (in will) nor give in. And Allah Loves those who are firm and steadfast.
W. Khan How many a prophet has fought with many devout men alongside him! They did not lose heart, despite all that they had to suffer in God’s path. They neither weakened nor yielded. God loves the patient!
M. Sarwar Many godly people fought to help the Prophets in the cause of God. They did not lose courage, show weakness, or give in when facing hardships in their fight for the cause of God. God loves those who have patience.

Verse 147

Abdel Haleem All they said was, ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses. Make our feet firm, and give us help against the disbelievers,’
Yusuf Ali All that they said was: "Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and anything We may have done that transgressed our duty: Establish our feet firmly, and help us against those that resist Faith."
W. Khan All they said was, ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses. Make our feet firm, and help us against those who deny the truth,’
M. Sarwar The only words that they spoke were, "Lord, forgive our sins and our excess in our dealings, make us steadfast (in the fight for Your cause), and grant us victory over the unbelievers."

Verse 148

Abdel Haleem and so God gave them both the rewards of this world and the excellent rewards of the Hereafter: God loves those who do good.
Yusuf Ali And Allah gave them a reward in this world, and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. For Allah Loveth those who do good.
W. Khan and so God gave them both the rewards of this life and the excellent recompense of the life to come: God loves those who do good.
M. Sarwar God gave them their reward in this world and the best reward of the life to come. God loves the righteous ones.

Verse 149

Abdel Haleem You who believe, if you obey the disbelievers, they will make you revert to your old ways and you will turn into losers.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! If ye obey the Unbelievers, they will drive you back on your heels, and ye will turn back (from Faith) to your own loss.
W. Khan Believers, if you yield to those who deny the truth, they will cause you to turn back on your heels and you will turn into losers.
M. Sarwar Believers, if you obey the unbelievers, they will turn you back to disbelief and you will become lost.

Verse 150

Abdel Haleem No indeed! It is God who is your protector: He is the best of helpers.
Yusuf Ali Nay, Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers.
W. Khan No, indeed! it is God who is your protector: He is the best supporter.
M. Sarwar God is your Guardian and the best Helper.

Verse 151

Abdel Haleem We will strike panic into the disbelievers’ hearts because they attribute partners to God although He has sent no authority for this: their shelter will be the Fire- how miserable is the home of the evildoers!
Yusuf Ali Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire: And evil is the home of the wrong-doers!
W. Khan We will strike awe into the hearts of those who deny the truth, because they have associated partners with God, for which He has sent down no authority. Their abode shall be the Fire, and evil indeed is the abode of the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar We shall cause terror to enter the hearts of the faithless for their considering things equal to God without authoritative evidence. Their abode will be fire, a terrible dwelling for the unjust.

Verse 152

Abdel Haleem God fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. He has now forgiven you: God is most gracious to the believers.
Yusuf Ali Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission Were about to annihilate your enemy,-until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you but He forgave you: For Allah is full of grace to those who believe.
W. Khan And God made good His promise to you when by His leave you were about to destroy your foes, but then your courage failed you and you disagreed among yourselves [concerning the Prophet’s direction] and disobeyed it, after He had brought you within sight of what you wished for—some of you desired the goods of this world and some of you desired the Hereafter—then in order that He might put you to the test, He prevented you from defeating your foes. But now He has pardoned you: God is most gracious to the believers.
M. Sarwar God certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were fighting the unbelievers, by His permission. Even after We showed you what you wanted, you began to lose courage, started quarreling with each other, and disobeyed God's orders. Some of you want worldly gains and others of you want rewards in the hereafter. Then He let you face defeat in order to test you. However, He forgave you. God is Gracious to the believers.

Verse 153

Abdel Haleem You fled without looking back while the Messenger was calling out to you from behind, and God rewarded you with sorrow for sorrow. [He has now forgiven you] so that you may not grieve for what you missed or for what happened to you. God is well aware of everything you do.
Yusuf Ali Behold! ye were climbing up the high ground, without even casting a side glance at any one, and the Messenger in your rear was calling you back. There did Allah give you one distress after another by way of requital, to teach you not to grieve for (the booty) that had escaped you and for (the ill) that had befallen you. For Allah is well aware of all that ye do.
W. Khan When you were running away and did not look back at anyone, while the Messenger was calling to you from behind, He paid you back with one sorrow after another, so that you might not grieve for what you lost, nor for what befell you. God is aware of what you do.
M. Sarwar (Believers remember) when you were fleeing without even glancing to either side even though the Messengers were calling you back, God made you suffer sorrow upon sorrow to make you forget your grief of what you had lost and the injuries you had suffered. God is Well-Aware of what you do.

Verse 154

Abdel Haleem After sorrow, He caused calm to descend upon you, a sleep that overtook some of you. Another group, caring only for themselves, entertained false thoughts about God, thoughts more appropriate to pagan ignorance, and said, ‘Do we get a say in any of this?’ [Prophet], tell them, ‘Everything to do with this affair is in God’s hands.’ They conceal in their hearts things they will not reveal to you. They say, ‘If we had had our say in this, none of us would have been killed here.’ Tell them, ‘Even if you had resolved to stay at home, those who were destined to be killed would still have gone out to meet their deaths.’ God did this in order to test everything within you and in order to prove what is in your hearts. God knows your innermost thoughts very well.
Yusuf Ali After (the excitement) of the distress, He sent down calm on a band of you overcome with slumber, while another band was stirred to anxiety by their own feelings, Moved by wrong suspicions of Allah-suspicions due to ignorance. They said: "What affair is this of ours?" Say thou: "Indeed, this affair is wholly Allah's." They hide in their minds what they dare not reveal to thee. They say (to themselves): "If we had had anything to do with this affair, We should not have been in the slaughter here." Say: "Even if you had remained in your homes, those for whom death was decreed would certainly have gone forth to the place of their death"; but (all this was) that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purge what is in your hearts. For Allah knoweth well the secrets of your hearts.
W. Khan Then, after sorrow He sent down peace [of mind] upon you in the shape of drowsiness that overcame some of you, but there were others who were anxious only about themselves. They entertained false notions about God, like the notions of the days of ignorance. ‘Have we any say in the matter?’ they asked. Say to them, ‘All is in the hands of God.’They conceal in their hearts what they would not reveal to you. They say, ‘Had we had any say in the matter, none of us would have been killed here.’ Say to them, ‘Had you stayed in your homes, those whose death had been decreed would nevertheless have gone forth to the places where they were destined to die.’ And all this befell you so that God might test what is in your minds. And in order to purify what was in your hearts. For God is aware of your innermost thoughts.
M. Sarwar After the sorrows you suffered, He sent you relief and some of you were encompassed by slumber. To some others of you, your lives were so important that you, like ignorant people, began thinking suspiciously of God saying, "Do we have any say in the matter?" (Muhammad), tell them, "All matters belong to God." They try to hide within their souls what they do not reveal to you. They say, "Had we had the matter in our hands, we would not have been killed there." Tell them, "Even if you had stayed in your own homes, your sworn enemies could have attacked you and slain you while you were in your beds. God wanted to test you and purge what existed in your hearts.

Verse 155

Abdel Haleem As for those of you who turned away on the day the two armies met in battle, it was Satan who caused them to slip, through some of their actions. God has now pardoned them: God is most forgiving and forbearing.
Yusuf Ali Those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts Met,-it was Satan who caused them to fail, because of some (evil) they had done. But Allah Has blotted out (their fault): For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
W. Khan Those of you who turned away on the day the two hosts met [in battle] were made to slip by Satan on account of some of their deeds. But God has pardoned them: God is forgiving and forbearing.
M. Sarwar God knows what the hearts contain. Because of some of your bad deeds, those of you who ran away, when you faced the enemy, were misled by Satan. God forgave you for He is All-forgiving and Forbearing."

Verse 156

Abdel Haleem You who believe, do not be like those who disbelieved and said of their brothers who went out on a journey or a raid, ‘If only they had stayed with us they would not have died or been killed,’ for God will make such thoughts a source of anguish in their hearts. It is God who gives life and death; God sees everything you do.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Be not like the Unbelievers, who say of their brethren, when they are travelling through the Earth or engaged in fighting: "If they had stayed with us, they would not have died, or been slain." This that Allah may make it a cause of sighs and regrets in their hearts. It is Allah that gives Life and Death, and Allah sees well all that ye do.
W. Khan Believers, do not be like those who are bent on denying the truth and who say of their brothers, when they travel about the land or go forth to war, ‘Had they but remained with us, they would not have died, or been slain’—for God will cause such thoughts to become a source of bitter regret in their hearts, since it is God who gives life and causes death. And God sees all that you do.
M. Sarwar Believers, do not be like the unbelievers, who said of their brothers who travelled in the land or took part in a fight, "Had they stayed with us, they would not have died or been killed." God will only cause regret to enter their hearts. It is God who gives life and causes people to die. God is Well Aware of what you do.

Verse 157

Abdel Haleem Whether you are killed for God’s cause or die, God’s forgiveness and mercy are better than anything people amass.
Yusuf Ali And if ye are slain, or die, in the way of Allah, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are far better than all they could amass.
W. Khan If you are killed or die in God’s cause, then surely forgiveness from God and His grace are better than all that one could amass.
M. Sarwar If you were to die or to be killed for the cause of God, certainly His forgiveness and mercy is far better than your worldly gains.

Verse 158

Abdel Haleem Whether you die or are killed, it is to God that you will be gathered.
Yusuf Ali And if ye die, or are slain, Lo! it is unto Allah that ye are brought together.
W. Khan For, indeed, if you die or are killed, it is to God that you shall be gathered.
M. Sarwar If you die or are slain, certainly you will all be brought before God.

Verse 159

Abdel Haleem By an act of mercy from God, you [Prophet] were gentle in your dealings with them- had you been harsh, or hard-hearted, they would have dispersed and left you- so pardon them and ask forgiveness for them. Consult with them about matters, then, when you have decided on a course of action, put your trust in God: God loves those who put their trust in Him.
Yusuf Ali It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with them Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (Their faults), and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs (of moment). Then, when thou hast Taken a decision put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).
W. Khan It is by God’s grace that you were gentle with them—for if you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would surely have deserted you—so bear with them and pray for forgiveness for them. Take counsel with them in the conduct of affairs; then, when you have decided upon a course of action, place your trust in God: for God loves those who
M. Sarwar Only through the Divine Mercy have you (Muhammad) been able to deal with your followers so gently. If you had been stern and hard-hearted, they would all have deserted you a long time ago. Forgive them and ask God to forgive (their sins) and consult with them in certain matters. But ,when you reach a decision, trust God. God loves those who trust Him.

Verse 160

Abdel Haleem If God helps you [believers], no one can overcome you; if He forsakes you, who else can help you? Believers should put their trust in God.
Yusuf Ali If Allah helps you, none can overcome you: If He forsakes you, who is there, after that, that can help you? in Allah, then, Let believers put their trust.
W. Khan If place their trust in Him. God helps you, none can overcome you, but if He withdraws His help from you, who is there who can help you besides Him? In God, then, let the believers place their trust!
M. Sarwar If God is your helper, no one can defeat you. However, if He abandons you, who would help you? The true believers trust in God.

Verse 161

Abdel Haleem It is inconceivable that a prophet would ever dishonestly take something from the battle gains. Anyone who does so will carry it with him on the Day of Resurrection, when each soul will be fully repaid for what it has done: no one will be wronged.
Yusuf Ali No prophet could (ever) be false to his trust. If any person is so false, He shall, on the Day of Judgment, restore what he misappropriated; then shall every soul receive its due,- whatever it earned,- and none shall be dealt with unjustly.
W. Khan It is not for any Prophet to hold back anything; he who hides anything away shall bring it forth on the Day of Resurrection, when every human being shall be repaid in full for whatever he has done, and none shall be wronged.
M. Sarwar No Prophet can ever be treacherous. A treacherous person will be brought before God on the Day of Judgment with his treacherous deeds. Then every soul will be recompensed for its works without being wronged.

Verse 162

Abdel Haleem Can the man who pursues God’s good pleasure be like the man who has brought God’s wrath upon himself and whose home will be Hell- a foul destination?
Yusuf Ali Is the man who follows the good pleasure of Allah Like the man who draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and whose abode is in Hell?- A woeful refuge!
W. Khan Can one who seeks the pleasure of God, be like one who incurs the wrath of God and whose abode shall be Hell—an evil destination?
M. Sarwar Are those who seek God's pleasure equal to those who incur His wrath and whose dwelling will be hell, the terrible destination?

Verse 163

Abdel Haleem They are in a different class in God’s eyes; God sees exactly what they do.
Yusuf Ali They are in varying gardens in the sight of Allah, and Allah sees well all that they do.
W. Khan All have a different standing in the eyes of God, and God is observant of all their actions.
M. Sarwar People are of various grades in the sight of God. God is Well-Aware of all that they do.

Verse 164

Abdel Haleem God has been truly gracious to the believers in sending them a Messenger from among their own, to recite His revelations to them, to make them grow in purity, and to teach them the Scripture and wisdom- before that they were clearly astray.
Yusuf Ali Allah did confer a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a messenger from among themselves, rehearsing unto them the Signs of Allah, sanctifying them, and instructing them in Scripture and Wisdom, while, before that, they had been in manifest error.
W. Khan Indeed, God has conferred a great favour on the believers in sending a Messenger from among themselves, to recite His revelations to them, and purify them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom, for, before that they were surely in manifest error.
M. Sarwar God granted a great favor to the believers by sending a Messenger from their own people to recite to them God's revelations, to purify them of moral defects, to teach them the Book, and to give them wisdom. Before this they had lived in manifest error.

Verse 165

Abdel Haleem Why do you [believers] say, when a calamity befalls you, even after you have inflicted twice as much damage [on your enemy], ‘How did this happen?’? [Prophet], say, ‘You brought it upon yourselves.’ God has power over everything:
Yusuf Ali What! When a single disaster smites you, although ye smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, do ye say?- "Whence is this?" Say (to them): "It is from yourselves: For Allah hath power over all things."
W. Khan What! When a misfortune befalls you, after you had yourself inflicted twice as heavy losses, you say, ‘How has this come about?’ Say, ‘It was your own fault.’ Truly, God has the power to will anything:
M. Sarwar If misfortune befell you (the believers) your enemies had suffered twice as much (in the battle of Badr) but you asked, "Where did the misfortune come from?" (Muhammad), tell them, "It came from yourselves. God has power over all things.

Verse 166

Abdel Haleem what befell you on the day the two armies met in battle happened with God’s permission and in order for Him to see who were the true believers and who were the hypocrites who,
Yusuf Ali What ye suffered on the day the two armies Met, was with the leave of Allah, in order that He might test the believers,-
W. Khan the misfortune which befell you on the day when the two armies met happened by God’s leave, so that He might mark out the [true] believers
M. Sarwar What befell you, when the two armies confronted each other, was by the permission of God so that He would know who were the true believers

Verse 167

Abdel Haleem when it was said to them, ‘Come, fight for God’s cause, or at least defend yourselves,’ answered, ‘We would follow you if we knew there was going to be fighting.’ On that day they were closer to disbelief than belief. They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts: God knows exactly what they conceal.
Yusuf Ali And the Hypocrites also. These were told: "Come, fight in the way of Allah, or (at least) drive (The foe from your city)." They said: "Had we known how to fight, we should certainly have followed you." They were that day nearer to Unbelief than to Faith, saying with their lips what was not in their hearts but Allah hath full knowledge of all they conceal.
W. Khan and know those who acted hypocritically.’When they were told, ‘Come, fight in God’s cause and defend yourselves,’ they replied, ‘If we knew that fighting would take place, we would surely follow you.’ They were that day nearer to unbelief than to belief. The words they utter bear no relation to what is in their hearts. God knows well what they conceal.
M. Sarwar and who were the hypocrites. When the hypocrites were asked to fight for the cause of God or to defend the city, they replied, "Had we known before that you would fight, we would certainly not have followed you." At that time they were closer to disbelief than to faith. They speak words that do not come from their hearts. God knows well whatever they try to hide.

Verse 168

Abdel Haleem As for those who stayed behind, and said of their brothers, ‘If only they had listened to us, they would not have been killed,’ tell them [Prophet], ‘Ward off death from yourselves, if what you say is true.’
Yusuf Ali (They are) the ones that say, (of their brethren slain), while they themselves sit (at ease): "If only they had listened to us they would not have been slain." Say: "Avert death from your own selves, if ye speak the truth."
W. Khan Those who stayed behind, said of their brothers, ‘Had they listened to us, they would not have been killed.’ Say to them, ‘Ward off death from yourselves, then, if what you say be true!’
M. Sarwar There are those who themselves did not join the others in fighting for the cause of God and said about their brothers, "Had they listened to us and stayed at home, they would not have been killed." (Muhammad), tell them to save themselves from death if they are true in their claim.

Verse 169

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do not think of those who have been killed in God’s way as dead. They are alive with their Lord, well provided for,
Yusuf Ali Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord;
W. Khan Do not think of those who have been killed in God’s cause as dead. They are alive, and well provided for by their Lord;
M. Sarwar Do not think of those slain for the cause of God as dead. They are alive with their Lord and receive sustenance from Him.

Verse 170

Abdel Haleem happy with what God has given them of His favour; rejoicing that for those they have left behind who have yet to join them there is no fear, nor will they grieve;
Yusuf Ali They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah: And with regard to those left behind, who have not yet joined them (in their bliss), the (Martyrs) glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have they (cause to) grieve.
W. Khan they are joyful because of what God has bestowed on them of His grace and they rejoice that those they left behind, who have not yet joined them, that they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve;
M. Sarwar They are pleased with the favor from their Lord and have received the glad news that those who follow them will have no fear nor will they be grieved,

Verse 171

Abdel Haleem [rejoicing] in God’s blessing and favour, and that God will not let the reward of the believers be lost.
Yusuf Ali They glory in the Grace and the bounty from Allah, and in the fact that Allah suffereth not the reward of the Faithful to be lost (in the least).
W. Khan rejoicing in God’s grace and bounty. [They know that] God will not fail to requite the believers.
M. Sarwar that they will be rewarded with bounties and favors from their Lord and that God will not neglect the reward of the true believers.

Verse 172

Abdel Haleem Those who responded to God and the Messenger after suffering defeat, who do good and remain conscious of God, will have a great reward.
Yusuf Ali Of those who answered the call of Allah and the Messenger, even after being wounded, those who do right and refrain from wrong have a great reward;-
W. Khan Those who responded to the call of God and the Messenger, despite their having received an injury, and such of them as did good deeds and feared God, shall have a great reward.
M. Sarwar The righteous and pious of those who have pledged obedience to God and the Messenger, after injury had befallen them, will receive a great reward.

Verse 173

Abdel Haleem Those whose faith only increased when people said, ‘Fear your enemy: they have amassed a great army against you,’ and who replied, ‘God is enough for us: He is the best protector,’
Yusuf Ali Men said to them: "A great army is gathering against you": And frightened them: But it (only) increased their Faith: They said: "For us Allah sufficeth, and He is the best disposer of affairs."
W. Khan Those who, on being told that, ‘the enemy has gathered against you a great force, so fear them,’ only grew stronger in their faith and replied, ‘God is sufficient for us. He is the best guardian.’
M. Sarwar Such people, when warned to fear those who are gathered against them, are strengthened in their faith and say, "God is All-sufficient as our Guardian."

Verse 174

Abdel Haleem returned with grace and bounty from God; no harm befell them. They pursued God’s good pleasure. God’s favour is great indeed.
Yusuf Ali And they returned with Grace and bounty from Allah: no harm ever touched them: For they followed the good pleasure of Allah: And Allah is the Lord of bounties unbounded.
W. Khan They returned home with God’s favour and blessings, without having been touched by evil; for they pursued God’s pleasure. And God’s bounty is infinite.
M. Sarwar They returned with the favors and the bounties of God untouched by evil and followed by the pleasure of God. God's favor is great.

Verse 175

Abdel Haleem It is Satan who urges you to fear his followers; do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are true believers.
Yusuf Ali It is only the Evil One that suggests to you the fear of his votaries: Be ye not afraid of them, but fear Me, if ye have Faith.
W. Khan It is Satan who instills fear [into you] of his followers; do not fear them. But fear Me, if you are true believers.
M. Sarwar It is Satan who frightens his friends. Do not be afraid of them (enemies) but have fear of Me if you truly believe.

Verse 176

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do not be grieved by those who are quick to disbelieve. They will not harm God in the least; it is God’s will that they will have no share in the Hereafter- a terrible torment awaits them.
Yusuf Ali Let not those grieve thee who rush headlong into Unbelief: Not the least harm will they do to Allah: Allah's plan is that He will give them no portion in the Hereafter, but a severe punishment.
W. Khan And let not those grieve you who vie with one another in denying the truth: they cannot harm God in the least; it is God’s will that they will have no share in the life to come—a severe punishment awaits them.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), do not be grieved because of some people's haste to disbelieve. They can do no harm to God. God has decided not to give them any share in the life hereafter. There will be a great torment for them.

Verse 177

Abdel Haleem Those who sell their faith for disbelief will not harm God in any way; agonizing torment awaits them.
Yusuf Ali Those who purchase Unbelief at the price of faith,- not the least harm will they do to Allah, but they will have a grievous punishment.
W. Khan Those who have bought a denial of truth at the price of faith can in no way harm God; painful punishment awaits them.
M. Sarwar Those who have traded faith in exchange for disbelief can never do any harm to God. There will be a painful torment for them.

Verse 178

Abdel Haleem The disbelievers should not think that it is better for them that We give them more time: when We give them more time they become more sinful- a shameful torment awaits them.
Yusuf Ali Let not the Unbelievers think that our respite to them is good for themselves: We grant them respite that they may grow in their iniquity: But they will have a shameful punishment.
W. Khan Let not those who deny the truth think that Our granting them respite is good for them: Our granting them respite will only cause them to increase in disobedience—shameful punishment awaits them.
M. Sarwar The unbelievers must not think that Our respite is for their good. We only give them time to let them increase their sins. For them there will be a humiliating torment.

Verse 179

Abdel Haleem Nor was it God’s aim to leave you as you were, with no separation between the bad and the good. God would not show you [people] what is hidden; God chooses as His messengers whoever He will. So believe in God and His messengers: if you believe and stay mindful of God, you will have a great reward.
Yusuf Ali Allah will not leave the believers in the state in which ye are now, until He separates what is evil from what is good nor will He disclose to you the secrets of the Unseen. But He chooses of His Messengers (For the purpose) whom He pleases. So believe in Allah. And His messengers: And if ye believe and do right, ye have a reward without measure.
W. Khan On no account will God leave the believers in the condition in which they are now, until He separates the evil from the good. Nor will God reveal to you the unseen. But God chooses those of his messengers whom He will. Therefore, believe in God and His messengers, for if you have faith and guard yourselves against evil, you shall have a great reward.
M. Sarwar God left the believers in their existing state for no other reason than to distinguish the evil-doers from the virtuous ones. God does not inform you of the unseen. He chooses for such information anyone of His Messengers that He wants. Have faith in God and in His Messengers. If you have faith and are pious, there will be a great reward for you.

Verse 180

Abdel Haleem Those who are miserly with what God has granted them out of His grace should not think that it is good for them; on the contrary, it is bad for them. Whatever they meanly withhold will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection. It is God who will inherit the heavens and earth: God is well aware of everything you do.
Yusuf Ali And let not those who covetously withhold of the gifts which Allah Hath given them of His Grace, think that it is good for them: Nay, it will be the worse for them: soon shall the things which they covetously withheld be tied to their necks Like a twisted collar, on the Day of Judgment. To Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.
W. Khan Let not those who are niggardly with what God has granted them out of His bounty think that it is good for them. Indeed, it is evil for them. What they are niggardly about shall be hung about their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection. It is God who will inherit the heavens and the earth: God is aware of all that you do.
M. Sarwar Those who are avaricious of the favors that God has given them should not think that this is good for them. Avarice is evil and whatever they are avaricious about will be tied to their necks on the Day of Judgment. To God belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. God is Well Aware of what you do.

Verse 181

Abdel Haleem God has certainly heard the words of those who sneer, ‘So God is poor, while we are rich’. We shall record everything they say––as well as their killing of prophets in defiance of all that is right- and We shall say to them, ‘Taste the torment of the scorching fire.
Yusuf Ali Allah hath heard the taunt of those who say: "Truly, Allah is indigent and we are rich!"- We shall certainly record their word and (their act) of slaying the prophets in defiance of right, and We shall say: "Taste ye the penalty of the Scorching Fire!
W. Khan God has indeed heard the words of those who said, ‘Behold, God is poor while we are rich!’We shall record what they have said—and their slaying of the prophets unjustly—and We shall say, ‘Taste the torment of burning.
M. Sarwar God certainly has heard the words of those who said, "God is poor and we are wealthy". We shall write down what they have said and their murder of the Prophets without reason and We shall tell them to suffer the burning torment.

Verse 182

Abdel Haleem That is on account of what you stored up for yourselves with your own hands: God is never unjust to His servants.’
Yusuf Ali "This is because of the (unrighteous deeds) which your hands sent on before ye: For Allah never harms those who serve Him."
W. Khan In return for what your own hands have wrought—for never does God do the least wrong to His creatures!’
M. Sarwar This is only the result of their deeds. God is not unjust to His servants.

Verse 183

Abdel Haleem To those who say, ‘God has commanded us not to believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering that fire [from heaven] consumes,’ say [Prophet], ‘Messengers before me have come to you with clear signs, including the one you mention. If you are sincere, why did you kill them?’
Yusuf Ali They (also) said: "Allah took our promise not to believe in an messenger unless He showed us a sacrifice consumed by Fire (From heaven)." Say: "There came to you messengers before me, with clear Signs and even with what ye ask for: why then did ye slay them, if ye speak the truth?"
W. Khan To those who say, ‘God has commanded us not to believe in any messenger unless he brings down to us an offering to be consumed by fire,’ say, ‘Messengers before me have come to you with clear signs, including the one you demand. Why did you kill them, if you are telling the truth?’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say to those who say, 'God has commanded us not to believe any Messenger unless he offers a burnt offering,' (Muhammad) say, "Messengers came to you before me with certain miracles and with that which you had asked for (burnt offering). Why, then, did you slay them if you were true in your claim?"

Verse 184

Abdel Haleem If they reject you, so have other messengers been rejected before you, even though they came with clear evidence, books of wisdom and enlightening scripture.
Yusuf Ali Then if they reject thee, so were rejected messengers before thee, who came with Clear Signs, Books of dark prophecies, and the Book of Enlightenment.
W. Khan If they deny you, so have other messengers been denied before you, who came with clear signs, scriptures and enlightening book.
M. Sarwar If they reject you, they had certainly rejected the Messengers who lived before you and who showed them authoritative evidence, smaller Books, and the Book of enlightenment.

Verse 185

Abdel Haleem Every soul will taste death and you will be paid in full only on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have triumphed. The present world is only an illusory pleasure:
Yusuf Ali Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception.
W. Khan Every human being is bound to taste death: and you shall receive your rewards in full on the Day of Resurrection. He who is kept away from the Fire and is admitted to Paradise, will surely triumph; for the life of this world is nothing but an illusory enjoyment.
M. Sarwar Every soul is destined to experience the agony of death. You (Muslims) will receive the recompense for your deeds on the Day of Judgment. To be saved from the fire and admitted to Paradise is certainly a great triumph. The worldly life is no more than a deceitful possession.

Verse 186

Abdel Haleem you are sure to be tested through your possessions and persons; you are sure to hear much that is hurtful from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with God. If you are steadfast and mindful of God, that is the best course.
Yusuf Ali Ye shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and ye shall certainly Hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if ye persevere patiently, and guard against evil,-then that will be a determining factor in all affairs.
W. Khan You will surely be tried and tested in your possessions and your persons, and you shall surely hear many hurtful things from those who were given the Book before you and from those who set up partners with God, but if you endure with fortitude and restrain yourselves, that indeed is a matter of strong determination.
M. Sarwar You (believers) will certainly be tested by the loss of your property and lives and you will hear a great many grieving words from the People of the Book and the pagans. If you will have patience and piety, it will be a sign of firm determination and steadfastness (in life).

Verse 187

Abdel Haleem God took a pledge from those who were given the Scripture- ‘Make it known to people; do not conceal it’- but they tossed the pledge over their shoulders, they bartered it for a small price: what a bad bargain they made!
Yusuf Ali And remember Allah took a covenant from the People of the Book, to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made!
W. Khan God made a covenant with those who were given the Book to make it known to people and not conceal it. But they cast it behind their backs and bartered it for a paltry price: what an evil bargain they made!
M. Sarwar When God made a covenant with the People of the Book saying, "Tell the people about it (Muhammad's prophesy) without hiding any part, therefrom, they threw it behind their backs and sold it for a very small price. What a miserable bargain!

Verse 188

Abdel Haleem Do not think [Prophet] that those who exult in what they have done and seek praise for things they have not done will escape the torment; agonizing torment awaits them.
Yusuf Ali Think not that those who exult in what they have brought about, and love to be praised for what they have not done,- think escape the penalty. For them is a penalty Grievous indeed.
W. Khan Those who exult in their misdeeds and love to be praised for what they have not done should not suppose that they are secure from punishment; they shall suffer a grievous punishment.
M. Sarwar Do not think that those who are happy with their possessions and positions and those who love to be praised for what they themselves have not done can ever be saved from torment. For them there will be a painful punishment.

Verse 189

Abdel Haleem Control of the heavens and earth belongs to God; God has power over everything.
Yusuf Ali To Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and Allah hath power over all things.
W. Khan The kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs to God; God has power over all things.
M. Sarwar To God belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth and He has power over all things.

Verse 190

Abdel Haleem There truly are signs in the creation of the heavens and earth, and in the alternation of night and day, for those with understanding,
Yusuf Ali Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding,-
W. Khan There are signs in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day for people of understanding;
M. Sarwar The creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the day and the night are evidence (of the existence of God) for people of reason.

Verse 191

Abdel Haleem who remember God standing, sitting, and lying down, who reflect on the creation of the heavens and earth: ‘Our Lord! You have not created all this without purpose- You are far above that!- so protect us from the torment of the Fire.
Yusuf Ali Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.
W. Khan who remember God while standing, sitting and [lying] on their sides, and who ponder over the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying, ‘Lord, You have not created all this without purpose. Glory be to You! Save us from the torment of the Fire.
M. Sarwar It is these who commemorate God while standing, sitting, or resting on their sides and who think about the creation of the heavens and the earth and say, "Lord, you have not created all this without reason. Glory be to you. Lord, save us from the torment of the fire".

Verse 192

Abdel Haleem Our Lord! You will truly humiliate those You commit to the Fire. The evildoers have no one to help them.
Yusuf Ali "Our Lord! any whom Thou dost admit to the Fire, Truly Thou coverest with shame, and never will wrong-doers Find any helpers!
W. Khan Lord, those whom You condemn to enter the Fire You have surely brought to disgrace. Wrongdoers will have no supporters.
M. Sarwar Those whom You submit to the fire are certainly disgraced. There is no helper for the unjust.

Verse 193

Abdel Haleem Our Lord! We have heard someone calling us to faith- “ Believe in your Lord”- and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, wipe out our bad deeds, and grant that we join the righteous when we die.
Yusuf Ali "Our Lord! we have heard the call of one calling (Us) to Faith, 'Believe ye in the Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, blot out from us our iniquities, and take to Thyself our souls in the company of the righteous.
W. Khan Lord, we have heard a caller calling to the true faith saying, “Believe in your Lord,” and we believed. Lord, forgive us our sins and remove from us our bad deeds and make us die with the virtuous.
M. Sarwar "Lord, we have heard the person calling to the faith and have accepted his call. Forgive our sins, expiate our bad deeds, and let us die with the righteous ones.

Verse 194

Abdel Haleem Our Lord! Bestow upon us all that You have promised us through Your messengers- do not humiliate us on the Day of Resurrection- You never break Your promise.’
Yusuf Ali "Our Lord! Grant us what Thou didst promise unto us through Thine messengers, and save us from shame on the Day of Judgment: For Thou never breakest Thy promise."
W. Khan Our Lord! Grant us what You have promised to us through Your messengers, and do not humiliate us on the Day of Resurrection. Surely, You never fail to fulfill Your promise.’
M. Sarwar Lord, grant us the victory that You have promised your Messenger and do not disgrace us on the Day of Judgment; You are the One who never ignores His promise."

Verse 195

Abdel Haleem Their Lord has answered them: ‘I will not allow the deeds of any one of you to be lost, whether you are male or female, each is like the other [in rewards]. I will certainly wipe out the bad deeds of those who emigrated and were driven out of their homes, who suffered harm for My cause, who fought and were killed. I will certainly admit them to Gardens graced with flowing streams, as a reward from God: the best reward is with God.’
Yusuf Ali And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: Ye are members, one of another: Those who have left their homes, or been driven out therefrom, or suffered harm in My Cause, or fought or been slain,- verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath;- A reward from the presence of Allah, and from His presence is the best of rewards."
W. Khan Their Lord accepted their prayer, saying, ‘I will deny no man or woman among you the reward of their labours. You are members one of another. I will certainly forgive the sins of those who emigrated and were expelled from their homes, who suffered persecution in My cause, who fought and were killed. I will certainly admit them to Gardens through which rivers flow, as a reward from God: with God is the best reward.’
M. Sarwar Their Lord answered their prayers saying, "I do not neglect anyone's labor whether the laborer be male or female. You are all related to one another. Those who migrated from Mecca, those who were expelled from their homes, those who were tortured for My cause, and those who fought and were killed for My cause will find their sins expiated by Me and I will admit them into the gardens wherein streams flow. It will be their reward from God Who grants the best rewards."

Verse 196

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do not be deceived by the disbelievers’ [lucrative] trading to and fro in the land:
Yusuf Ali Let not the strutting about of the Unbelievers through the land deceive thee:
W. Khan Do not be deceived by the actions of those who deny the truth in the land:
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), do not be deceived by the changing activities of the unbelievers in different parts of the land.

Verse 197

Abdel Haleem this is only a brief enjoyment, after which Hell will be their home- a miserable resting place!
Yusuf Ali Little is it for enjoyment: Their ultimate abode is Hell: what an evil bed (To lie on)!
W. Khan this is only a brief enjoyment, after which Hell shall be their abode—what an evil resting place!
M. Sarwar Their gains are only a means of enjoyment in this life. However, their destination is hell, the terrible dwelling.

Verse 198

Abdel Haleem But those who were mindful of their Lord will have Gardens graced with flowing streams where they will stay as a reward from God. What God has is best for those who are truly good.
Yusuf Ali On the other hand, for those who fear their Lord, are Gardens, with rivers flowing beneath; therein are they to dwell (for ever),- a gift from the presence of Allah; and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.
W. Khan Those who fear their Lord shall have gardens through which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever: and a goodly welcome from their Lord. God’s recompense is best for the virtuous.
M. Sarwar For those who have fear of their Lord, there will be gardens wherein streams flow and they will live therein forever as a gift from their Lord. God has the best reward for the virtuous people.

Verse 199

Abdel Haleem Some of the People of the Book believe in God, in what has been sent down to you and in what was sent down to them: humbling themselves before God, they would never sell God’s revelation for a small price. These people will have their rewards with their Lord: God is swift in reckoning.
Yusuf Ali And there are, certainly, among the People of the Book, those who believe in Allah, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them, bowing in humility to Allah: They will not sell the Signs of Allah for a miserable gain! For them is a reward with their Lord, and Allah is swift in account.
W. Khan Some of the People of the Book believe in God, and in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed to them. They humble themselves before God and do not sell God’s revelations for a trifling price. These shall be rewarded by their Lord: God is swift in reckoning!
M. Sarwar There are some among the People of the Book who believe in God and what is revealed to you and to them. They are humble before God and do not trade God's revelations for a small price. They will receive their reward from their Lord. God's reckoning is swift.

Verse 200

Abdel Haleem You who believe, be steadfast, more steadfast than others; be ready; always be mindful of God, so that you may prosper.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Persevere in patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other; and fear Allah; that ye may prosper.
W. Khan Believers, endure, vie with each other in endurance, stand firm in your faith and fear God, so that you may succeed.
M. Sarwar Believers, have patience, help each other with patience, establish good relations with one another, and have fear of God so that you may have everlasting happiness.
