M. Sarwar Alif. Lam. Mim.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem These are the verses of the wise Scripture,
Yusuf Ali These are Verses of the Wise Book,-
W. Khan These are the verses of the Book of wisdom,
M. Sarwar These are the verses of the Book of wisdom.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem [with] guidance and mercy for those who do good,
Yusuf Ali A Guide and a Mercy to the Doers of Good,-
W. Khan a guide and a mercy for those who do good,
M. Sarwar A guidance and mercy for the righteous

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and are certain of the Hereafter:
Yusuf Ali Those who establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity, and have (in their hearts) the assurance of the Hereafter.
W. Khan for those who attend to their prayers and pay the zakat and who have firm faith in the Hereafter:
M. Sarwar people who are steadfast in prayer, pay the religious tax, and have firm belief in the life to come.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem these are rightly guided by their Lord, and it is they who will prosper.
Yusuf Ali These are on (true) guidance from their Lord: and these are the ones who will prosper.
W. Khan these are rightly guided by their Lord: and these are the ones who will prosper.
M. Sarwar They follow the guidance of their Lord and they will have everlasting happiness.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem But there is the sort of person who pays for distracting tales, intending, without any knowledge, to lead others from God’s way, and to hold it up to ridicule. There will be humiliating torment for him!
Yusuf Ali But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.
W. Khan But among men there are some who spend their time in idle diversions only to lead people astray from the path of God, and without knowledge, hold it up to ridicule: for such there is a humiliating punishment in store.
M. Sarwar (In an attempt to show that God's revelations are only ancient legends) some people pay for meaningless tales to draw others attention away from the Quran without knowledge and treat as a matter of fun. They will suffer a humiliating torment.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem When Our verses are recited to him, he turns away disdainfully as if he had not heard them, as if there were heaviness in his ears. Tell him that there will be a painful torment!
Yusuf Ali When Our Signs are rehearsed to such a one, he turns away in arrogance, as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in both his ears: announce to him a grievous Penalty.
W. Khan Whenever Our messages are conveyed to such a person, he turns away in his arrogance, as though he had not heard them—as though his ears were sealed: give him, then, the tidings of grievous suffering [in the life to come].
M. Sarwar When Our revelations are recited to them, they turn back on their heels out of pride as if they did not hear them or their ears had been sealed off. Warn them of the painful torment.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there will be Gardens of bliss
Yusuf Ali For those who believe and work righteous deeds, there will be Gardens of Bliss,-
W. Khan Surely, those who believe and do good works shall enter gardens of bliss,
M. Sarwar The righteously striving believers will enter Paradise

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem where they will stay: that is God’s true promise, and He is the Almighty, the All Wise.
Yusuf Ali To dwell therein. The promise of Allah is true: and He is Exalted in Power, Wise.
W. Khan wherein they will abide forever. That is God’s true promise; He is the Mighty, the Wise One.
M. Sarwar wherein they will live forever. It is the true promise of God. He is Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem He created the heavens without any visible support, and He placed firm mountains on the earth––in case it should shake under you––and He spread all kinds of animals around it. We sent down water from the sky, with which We made every kind of good plant grow on earth:
Yusuf Ali He created the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs.
W. Khan He has created the skies without any support that you could see, and has placed firm mountains upon the earth, lest it sway with you, and has caused all manner of living creatures to multiply thereon. And We sent down water from the skies, and thus We made every kind of excellent plant grow there:
M. Sarwar He has created the heavens without pillar as you can see, fixed the mountains on earth so that it may not shake you away, and settled therein all types of living creatures. We have sent down water from the sky and made all kinds of plants grow in gracious pairs.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem all this is God’s creation. Now, show Me what your other gods have created. No, the disbelievers are clearly astray.
Yusuf Ali Such is the Creation of Allah: now show Me what is there that others besides Him have created: nay, but the Transgressors are in manifest error.
W. Khan this is God’s creation. Show me then what those besides Him have created! The wrongdoers are in manifest error.
M. Sarwar This is the creation of God. Show me what those whom you consider equal to God have created. In fact, the unjust ones are in plain error.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem We endowed Luqman with wisdom: ‘Be thankful to God: whoever gives thanks benefits his own soul, and as for those who are thankless––God is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise.’
Yusuf Ali we bestowed (in the past) Wisdom on Luqman: "Show (thy) gratitude to Allah." Any who is (so) grateful does so to the profit of his own soul: but if any is ungrateful, verily Allah is free of all wants, Worthy of all praise.
W. Khan We bestowed wisdom on Luqman, saying, ‘Be grateful to God: he who is grateful, is grateful only for the good of his own soul. But if anyone is ungrateful, then surely God is self-sufficient and praiseworthy.’
M. Sarwar We gave wisdom to Luqman so that he would give thanks to God. Those who give thanks to God do so for their own good. Those who are ungrateful should know that God is Self-sufficient and Praiseworthy.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem Luqman counselled his son, ‘My son, do not attribute any partners to God: attributing partners to Him is a terrible wrong.’
Yusuf Ali Behold, Luqman said to his son by way of instruction: "O my son! join not in worship (others) with Allah: for false worship is indeed the highest wrong-doing."
W. Khan Luqman said to his son, counselling him, ‘My son, do not associate anything with God. Associating others with Him is a terrible wrong.’
M. Sarwar Luqman advised his son telling him, "My son, do not consider anything equal to God, for it is the greatest injustice."

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem We have commanded people to be good to their parents: their mothers carried them, with strain upon strain, and it takes two years to wean them. Give thanks to Me and to your parents- all will return to Me.
Yusuf Ali And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.
W. Khan We have enjoined man to show kindness to his parents— for his mother bears him, in hardship upon hardship, and his weaning takes two years. [We said] Give thanks to Me and to your parents; all will return to Me.
M. Sarwar (Concerning his parents), We advised the man, whose mother bears him with great pain and breast-feeds him for two years, to give thanks to Me first and then to them, to Me all things proceed.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem If they strive to make you associate with Me anything about which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. Yet keep their company in this life according to what is right, and follow the path of those who turn to Me. You will all return to Me in the end, and I will tell you everything that you have done.
Yusuf Ali "But if they strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration), and follow the way of those who turn to me (in love): in the end the return of you all is to Me, and I will tell you the truth (and meaning) of all that ye did."
W. Khan But if they press you to associate something with Me about which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. Yet be kind to them in this world and follow the path of those who turn to Me. You will all return to Me in the end, and I will tell you everything that you have done.
M. Sarwar If they try to force you to consider things equal to Me, which you cannot justify, equal to Me, do not obey them. Maintain lawful relations with them in this world and follow the path of those who turn in repentance to Me. To Me you will all return and I shall tell you all that you have done.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem [And Luqman continued], ‘My son, if even the weight of a mustard seed were hidden in a rock or anywhere in the heavens or earth, God would bring it [to light], for He is all subtle and all aware.
Yusuf Ali "O my son!" (said Luqman), "If there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them).
W. Khan [Luqman further said,] ‘O my son! Though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard seed and though it be hidden in a rock, or in the heavens or on the earth, God will bring it forth. Truly, God is the knower of all subtleties and He is aware.
M. Sarwar "My son, God keeps the records of all the good and evil deeds, even if they are as small as a grain of mustard seed, hidden in a rock or in the heavens or the earth. God is subtle and All-aware.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem Keep up the prayer, my son; command what is right; forbid what is wrong; bear anything that happens to you steadfastly: these are things to be aspired to.
Yusuf Ali "O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs.
W. Khan O my dear son! Say your prayers regularly, and enjoin good, and forbid evil, and endure patiently whatever may befall you. Surely, this is something which requires firm resolve.
M. Sarwar My son, be steadfast in prayer. Make others do good. Prevent them from doing evil. Be patient in hardship. Patience comes from faith and determination.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Do not turn your nose up at people, nor walk about the place arrogantly, for God does not love arrogant or boastful people.
Yusuf Ali "And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster.
W. Khan Do not avert your face from people out of haughtiness and do not walk with pride on the earth: for, behold, God does not love arrogant and boastful people.
M. Sarwar Do not scornfully turn your face away from people. Do not walk around puffed-up with pride; God does not love arrogant and boastful people.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Go at a moderate pace and lower your voice, for the ugliest of all voices is the braying of asses.’
Yusuf Ali "And be moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass."
W. Khan Walk modestly and lower your voice, for the ugliest of all voices is the braying of the ass.’
M. Sarwar Be moderate in your walking and your talking. The most unpleasant sound is the braying of donkeys."

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem [People], do you not see how God has made what is in the heavens and on the earth useful to you, and has lavished His bless-ings on you both outwardly and inwardly? Yet some people argue about God, without knowledge or guidance or an illuminating scripture.
Yusuf Ali Do ye not see that Allah has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made his bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen? Yet there are among men those who dispute about Allah, without knowledge and without guidance, and without a Book to enlighten them!
W. Khan Have you not seen that God has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and has completed His favours to you, both seen and unseen? Yet there are some who dispute concerning God, without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book.
M. Sarwar Have you not seen that God has made all that is in the heavens and the earth, subservient to you (human beings), and has extended and perfected for you His apparent and unseen bounties? Some people argue about God without knowledge, guidance, or an enlightening book.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem When they are told, ‘Follow what God has sent down,’ they say: ‘We shall follow what we saw our forefathers following.’ What! Even if Satan is calling them to the suffering of the Blazing Flame?
Yusuf Ali When they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: "Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following). "What! even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the (Blazing) Fire?
W. Khan When they are told to follow the [Revelations] that God has sent down, they say, ‘No, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers [following].’ Yes! Even though Satan is inviting them to the punishment of the burning Fire?
M. Sarwar When they are told to follow what God has revealed to them, they say, "We shall only follow our father's way of life." Will they follow it even if it is Satan who is calling them to the burning torment?

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem Whoever directs himself wholly to God and does good work has grasped the surest handhold, for the outcome of everything is with God.
Yusuf Ali Whoever submits his whole self to Allah, and is a doer of good, has grasped indeed the most trustworthy hand-hold: and with Allah rests the End and Decision of (all) affairs.
W. Khan He who submits himself completely to God, and is a doer of good, has surely grasped a strong handle, for the final outcome of all events rests with God.
M. Sarwar Whoever submits himself to the will of God in righteousness has certainly achieved a strong-hold. The end of all things is in the hands of God.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem As for those who refuse to do this, do not let their refusal sadden you [Prophet]- they will return to Us and We shall tell them what they have done: God knows all that hearts contain-
Yusuf Ali But if any reject Faith, let not his rejection grieve thee: to Us is their return, and We shall tell them the truth of their deeds: for Allah knows well all that is in (men's) hearts.
W. Khan But if any reject the Faith, let not his rejection grieve you: for to Us they shall return, and We shall tell them the truth about their deeds: for God knows well all that is in the human hearts—
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), do not let the disbelievers grieve you. To Us they will all return and We shall tell them all about what they have done. God knows best what is in everyone's hearts.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem We let them enjoy themselves for a little while, but We shall drive them to a harsh torment.
Yusuf Ali We grant them their pleasure for a little while: in the end shall We drive them to a chastisement unrelenting.
W. Khan We shall let them enjoy themselves for a little while, but then We shall drive them to a harsh punishment.
M. Sarwar We shall allow them to enjoy themselves for a short while, then force them into severe torment.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem If you ask them who created the heavens and earth, they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Praise belongs to God,’ but most of them do not understand.
Yusuf Ali If thou ask them, who it is that created the heavens and the earth. They will certainly say, "Allah". Say: "Praise be to Allah!" But most of them understand not.
W. Khan If you should ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ They will surely answer, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Praise be to God!’ But most of them do not understand.
M. Sarwar If you ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth," they will certainly say, "God has created them." Say, "It is only God who deserves all praise, but most of them do not know".

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to God. God is self-sufficient and worthy of all praise.
Yusuf Ali To Allah belong all things in heaven and earth: verily Allah is He (that is) free of all wants, worthy of all praise.
W. Khan Whatever is in the heavens and the earth belongs to God. Assuredly, God is self-sufficient and praiseworthy.
M. Sarwar To God belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He is Self-sufficient and Praiseworthy.

Verse 27

Sahih Intl And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
Abdel Haleem If all the trees on earth were pens and all the seas, with seven more seas besides, [were ink,] still God’s words would not run out: God is almighty and all wise.
Yusuf Ali And if all the trees on earth were pens and the ocean (were ink), with seven oceans behind it to add to its (supply), yet would not the words of Allah be exhausted (in the writing): for Allah is Exalted in Power, full of Wisdom.
W. Khan If all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea [were] ink, with seven [more] seas added to it, the words of God would not be exhausted: for, truly, God is Almighty and Wise.
M. Sarwar If all the trees in the earth were pens and the ocean, with seven more oceans, were ink still these could not suffice to record all the Words of God. God is Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Creating and resurrecting all of you is only like creating or resurrecting a single soul: God is all hearing and all seeing.
Yusuf Ali And your creation or your resurrection is in no wise but as an individual soul: for Allah is He Who hears and sees (all things).
W. Khan Creating and resurrecting all of you is just like creating and resurrecting a single soul. Truly, God hears all and observes all.
M. Sarwar For God your creation and your resurrection are only like the creation and resurrection of one soul. God is All-hearing and All-seeing.

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do you not see that God causes the night to merge into day and the day to merge into night; that He has subjected the sun and the moon, each to run its course for a stated term; that He is aware of everything you [people] do?
Yusuf Ali Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and he merges Day into Night; that He has subjected the sun, and the moon (to his Law), each running its course for a term appointed; and that Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do?
W. Khan Have you not seen that God makes the night pass into the day, and makes the day pass into the night, and that He has pressed the sun and the moon into His service, each pursuing its course for an appointed term, and that God is well aware of what you do?
M. Sarwar Have you not seen that God causes the night to enter into the day and the day into the night. He has made the sun and moon subservient (to Himself). Each moves (in an orbit) for an appointed time. God is certainly All-aware of what you do.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem This is because God is the Truth, and what they invoke beside Him is false. He is the Most High, Most Great.
Yusuf Ali That is because Allah is the (only) Reality, and because whatever else they invoke besides Him is Falsehood; and because Allah,- He is the Most High, Most Great.
W. Khan That is because God is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood. God is the Most High, the Supreme One.
M. Sarwar This is because God is the supreme Truth and whatever they worship besides Him is falsehood. God is the Most High and the Most Great.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], do you not see that ships sail through the sea, by the grace of God, to show you [people] some of His wonders? Truly there are signs in this for every steadfast, thankful person.
Yusuf Ali Seest thou not that the ships sail through the ocean by the Grace of Allah?- that He may show you of His Signs? Verily in this are Signs for all who constantly persevere and give thanks.
W. Khan Have you not seen how the ships sail on the sea by God’s grace so that He may show you some of His signs? Surely therein are signs for every steadfast, thankful person.
M. Sarwar Have you not seen that the ships sail in the ocean through the bounty of God so that He may show you the evidence (of His existence). There is evidence (of the truth) in this for every forbearing and grateful one.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem When the waves loom over those on board like giant shadows they call out to God, devoting their religion entirely to Him. But, when He has delivered them safely to land, some of them waver- only a treacherous, thankless person refuses to acknowledge Our signs.
Yusuf Ali When a wave covers them like the canopy (of clouds), they call to Allah, offering Him sincere devotion. But when He has delivered them safely to land, there are among them those that halt between (right and wrong). But none reject Our Signs except only a perfidious ungrateful (wretch)!
W. Khan When the waves engulf them like shadows [of death], they call to God, sincere [at that moment] in their faith in Him alone: but as soon as He has brought them safe ashore, only some of them take the right course. And none denies Our signs save the perfidious and ungrateful person.
M. Sarwar When the waves cover them like shadows, they pray to God with sincerity in their religion, but when We bring them safely to land, only some of them follow the right path. No one rejects Our revelations except the treacherous ungrateful ones.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem People, be mindful of your Lord and fear a day when no parent will take the place of their child, nor a child take the place of their parent, in any way. God’s promise is true, so do not let the present life delude you, nor let the Deceiver delude you about God.
Yusuf Ali O mankind! do your duty to your Lord, and fear (the coming of) a Day when no father can avail aught for his son, nor a son avail aught for his father. Verily, the promise of Allah is true: let not then this present life deceive you, nor let the chief Deceiver deceive you about Allah.
W. Khan O men, seek protection with your Lord and fear the Day when neither will the father be of any avail to his son, nor will the son be of any avail to his father. God’s promise is surely true. So let not worldly life beguile you, nor let the Deceiver deceive you concerning God.
M. Sarwar Mankind, have fear of your Lord and the day when a father will be of no avail to his son, nor will a son carry any part of the burden of his father. The promise of God is true. Do not let the worldly life deceive you nor let your pride deceive you about God.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem Knowledge of the Hour [of Resurrection] belongs to God; it is He who sends down the relieving rain and He who knows what is hidden in the womb. No soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die; it is God who is all knowing and all aware.
Yusuf Ali Verily the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone). It is He Who sends down rain, and He Who knows what is in the wombs. Nor does any one know what it is that he will earn on the morrow: Nor does any one know in what land he is to die. Verily with Allah is full knowledge and He is acquainted (with all things).
W. Khan Truly, God alone has knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Surely, God is all knowing, all-aware.
M. Sarwar Only God has the knowledge of the coming of the Hour of Doom. He sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. No soul is aware of what it will achieve tomorrow and no soul knows in which land it will die. God is All-knowing and All-aware.
