The Qurʾān

Chapter 37

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By those [angels] ranged in rows,
Yusuf Ali By those who range themselves in ranks,
W. Khan By those [angels] who range themselves in close ranks
M. Sarwar I swear by (the angels) who stand in ranks,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem who rebuke reproachfully
Yusuf Ali And so are strong in repelling (evil),
W. Khan and those who drive away [the wicked] with reproof
M. Sarwar by those who drive away the devil (to protect Our revelation),

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem and recite God’s word,
Yusuf Ali And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!
W. Khan and by the reciters of the Reminder:
M. Sarwar and those who recite Our revelations,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem truly your God is One,
Yusuf Ali Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-
W. Khan your God is One,
M. Sarwar that your Lord is the only Lord.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between them, Lord of every sunrise.
Yusuf Ali Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!
W. Khan Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them; Lord of the Easts.
M. Sarwar He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Lord of the Eastern regions.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem We have adorned the lowest heaven with stars,
Yusuf Ali We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-
W. Khan We have adorned the lowest heaven with the beauty of the planets;
M. Sarwar We have decked the lower heavens with stars

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem and made them a safeguard against every rebellious devil:
Yusuf Ali (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,
W. Khan and guarded it against all rebellious devils:
M. Sarwar to protect them from the rebellious satan.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem they cannot eavesdrop on the Higher Assembly––pelted from every side,
Yusuf Ali (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,
W. Khan they cannot overhear the Higher Assembly for they are pelted from every side,
M. Sarwar The devils cannot hear those high above. They would be struck from all sides

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem driven away, they will have perpetual torment––
Yusuf Ali Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,
W. Khan driven away, and will suffer eternal punishment.
M. Sarwar and driven away to suffer the necessary torment.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem if any [of them] stealthily snatches away a fragment, he will be pursued by a piercing flame.
Yusuf Ali Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.
W. Khan But if anyone does succeed in snatching a glimpse [of such knowledge], he shall be pursued by a piercing flame.
M. Sarwar Some of them who stealthily steal words from the heavens are pursued by a glistening flame.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem So [Prophet], ask the disbelievers: is it harder to create them than other beings We have created? We created them from sticky clay.
Yusuf Ali Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
W. Khan So, ask those who deny the truth if it was harder to create them than all the other things We have created? We created them from sticky clay.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them, "Have they (people) been created stronger than what We have created?" We have created them from moist clay.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem You marvel as they scoff,
Yusuf Ali Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,
W. Khan No wonder you are surprised as they laugh with scorn.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), you will be surprised that they still mock (God's revelations).

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem take no heed when they are warned,
Yusuf Ali And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-
W. Khan When they are reminded, they do not pay heed,
M. Sarwar They pay no attention when they are reminded

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem and resort to ridicule when they see a sign,
Yusuf Ali And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,
W. Khan and whenever they see some sign, they ridicule it,
M. Sarwar and when they see a miracle, they mock

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem saying, ‘This is no more than blatant sorcery.’
Yusuf Ali And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!
W. Khan saying, ‘This is plain sorcery!’
M. Sarwar it and say, "It is only plain magic".

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem ‘What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we really be raised up again,
Yusuf Ali "What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)
W. Khan ‘What! When we have died and become dust and bones, will we be brought back to life again,
M. Sarwar They say, "Shall we be brought to life again after we die and turn into dust and bones?

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem along with our forefathers?’
Yusuf Ali "And also our fathers of old?"
W. Khan along with our forefathers?’
M. Sarwar Will our forefathers also be brought to life again?"

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Say, ‘Yes indeed, and you will be humiliated.’
Yusuf Ali Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."
W. Khan Say, ‘Yes indeed, and you will be brought low.’
M. Sarwar Say, "You will certainly be brought back to life in disgrace".

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Just one blast and––lo and behold!––they will look
Yusuf Ali Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!
W. Khan There will be but a single blast and then their eyes will open.
M. Sarwar The Day of Judgment will come within a single roar and they will remain gazing at it.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem and say, ‘Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgement.’
Yusuf Ali They will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"
W. Khan They will say, ‘Woe to us! This is the Day of Reckoning.’
M. Sarwar They will say, "Woe to us!" (They will be told), "This is the day of receiving recompense".

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem [It will be said], ‘This is the Day of Decision, which you used to deny.
Yusuf Ali (A voice will say,) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"
W. Khan [It will be said], ‘This is the Day of Judgement which you have been denying.’
M. Sarwar This is the Day of Judgment in which you disbelieved.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem [Angels], gather together those who did wrong, and others like them, as well as whatever they worshipped
Yusuf Ali "Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-
W. Khan But We shall say, ‘Assemble those who did wrong together with their associates and what they worshipped
M. Sarwar (God will command the angels), "Gather together the unjust, their spouses, and what they had worshipped

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem beside God, lead them all to the path of Hell,
Yusuf Ali "Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!
W. Khan besides God, and lead them to the path of the Fire;
M. Sarwar besides God, and show them the way of hell.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem and halt them for questioning:
Yusuf Ali "But stop them, for they must be asked:
W. Khan and stop them there for questioning:
M. Sarwar Stop them. They must be questioned."

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem “Why do you not support each other now?” ’––
Yusuf Ali "'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"
W. Khan “But what is the matter with you that you cannot help one another?”’—
M. Sarwar They will be asked, "Why do you not help each other?"

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem no indeed! They will be in complete submission on that Day––
Yusuf Ali Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);
W. Khan indeed, on that Day they will surrender themselves.
M. Sarwar In fact, on that day they will be submissive.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem and they will turn on one another accusingly.
Yusuf Ali And they will turn to one another, and question one another.
W. Khan They will turn upon one another, and question one another.
M. Sarwar They will turn to each other saying,

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem They will say, ‘You came to us from a position of power.’
Yusuf Ali They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"
W. Khan They will say, ‘You used to come at us from the right.’
M. Sarwar "It was you who tried to mislead us from righteousness".

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem They will say, ‘No! It was you who would not believe-
Yusuf Ali They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!
W. Khan They will say, ‘No! It was you who would not believe—
M. Sarwar Others will respond, "It was you who did not want to have any faith.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem we had no power over you- and you were already exceeding all limits.
Yusuf Ali "Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
W. Khan we had no power over you; but you yourselves were a rebellious people.
M. Sarwar We had no authority over you, in fact, you were a rebellious people.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Our Lord’s sentence on us is just and we must all taste the punishment.
Yusuf Ali "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).
W. Khan But now our Lord’s word has come true against us: truly, we are bound to taste [the punishment].
M. Sarwar Thus, the words of Our Lord about us have come true and now we are suffering the torment.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem We led you astray as we ourselves were astray.’
Yusuf Ali "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."
W. Khan We led you astray as we were ourselves astray.’
M. Sarwar We mislead you and we ourselves had also gone astray."

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem On that Day they will all share the torment:
Yusuf Ali Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.
W. Khan On that Day they will all share the punishment:
M. Sarwar On that day they will all share the torment.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem this is how We deal with the guilty.
Yusuf Ali Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.
W. Khan that is how We deal with evil-doers.
M. Sarwar This is how We deal with the criminals.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem Whenever it was said to them, ‘There is no deity but God,’ they became arrogant,
Yusuf Ali For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,
W. Khan When they were told, ‘There is no deity but God,’ they turned away with disdain,
M. Sarwar They were the ones, who on being told, "God is only One," become puffed-up with pride

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem and said, ‘Are we to forsake our gods for a mad poet?’
Yusuf Ali And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"
W. Khan and replied, ‘Shall we then give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?’
M. Sarwar and said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet".

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem ‘No: he brought the truth and confirmed the earlier messengers;
Yusuf Ali Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).
W. Khan ‘Surely, he has brought the truth, confirming those who were sent before;
M. Sarwar In fact, he had brought them the truth and had acknowledged the Messengers (who were sent before him).

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem you will taste the painful torment,
Yusuf Ali Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-
W. Khan you shall surely taste the painful punishment,
M. Sarwar (They will be told), "You will certainly suffer the painful torment

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem and be repaid only according to your deeds.’
Yusuf Ali But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-
W. Khan and be rewarded only according to your deeds.’
M. Sarwar and will be recompensed only for what you deserve.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem Not so God’s true servants.
Yusuf Ali But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,-
W. Khan But the chosen servants of God;
M. Sarwar But the sincere servants of God

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem They will have familiar provisions––
Yusuf Ali For them is a Sustenance determined,
W. Khan shall have a known provision—
M. Sarwar will have their determined sustenance

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem fruits- and will be honoured
Yusuf Ali Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,
W. Khan fruits of various kinds; and they shall be honoured,
M. Sarwar and fruits while they are honored.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem in gardens of delight;
Yusuf Ali In Gardens of Felicity,
W. Khan in the Gardens of Bliss,
M. Sarwar (They will live) in the bountiful gardens,

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem seated on couches, facing one another.
Yusuf Ali Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):
W. Khan seated on couches, facing one another.
M. Sarwar on couches facing each other.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem A drink will be passed round among them from a flowing spring:
Yusuf Ali Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,
W. Khan A drink will be passed round among them from a flowing spring:
M. Sarwar They will be served with a cup full of crystal clear wine,

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem white, delicious to those who taste it,
Yusuf Ali Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),
W. Khan white and delicious to those who drink it,
M. Sarwar delicious to those who drink it

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem causing no headiness or intoxication.
Yusuf Ali Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.
W. Khan causing no headiness or intoxication.
M. Sarwar but not harmful or intoxicating.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem With them will be spouses- modest of gaze and beautiful of eye-
Yusuf Ali And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).
W. Khan With them will be spouses—modest of gaze and beautiful of eye—
M. Sarwar They will have with them loving wives with big black and white eyes

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem like protected eggs.
Yusuf Ali As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.
W. Khan like closely guarded pearls.
M. Sarwar who are as chaste as sheltered eggs.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem They will turn to one another with questions:
Yusuf Ali Then they will turn to one another and question one another.
W. Khan They will turn to one another with questions:
M. Sarwar They will turn to each other and ask questions.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem one will say, ‘I had a close companion on earth
Yusuf Ali One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),
W. Khan one of them will say, ‘I had a friend,
M. Sarwar One of them will say, "I had a companion who asked me,

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem who used to ask me, “Do you really believe that
Yusuf Ali "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?
W. Khan who used to ask, “Do you really believe that
M. Sarwar 'Do you believe in the Day of Judgment?

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem after we die and become dust and bone, we shall be brought for judgement?”’
Yusuf Ali "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"
W. Khan after we die and become dust and bones, we shall be brought to judgement?’’’
M. Sarwar Shall we be recompensed for our deeds after we die and become bones and dust?

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem Then he will say, ‘Shall we look for him?’
Yusuf Ali (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"
W. Khan Then he will say, ‘Shall we look for him?’
M. Sarwar Do you want to see him?' "

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem He will look down and see him in the midst of the Fire,
Yusuf Ali He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
W. Khan Then he will look and see him in the midst of the Fire.
M. Sarwar He will look down and see him in hell.

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem and say to him, ‘By God, you almost brought me to ruin!
Yusuf Ali He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!
W. Khan He will say, ‘By God! You almost brought me to ruin!
M. Sarwar He will say to his friend in hell, "By God, you almost destroyed me.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem Had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I too would have been taken to Hell.’
Yusuf Ali "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!
W. Khan If it had not been for the blessing of my Lord, I would also have been taken to Hell.’
M. Sarwar Had I not the guidance of my Lord, I would certainly have been brought into torment".

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem Then he will say [to his blessed companions], ‘Are we never to die again after our earlier death?
Yusuf Ali "Is it (the case) that we shall not die,
W. Khan Then he will say [to his blessed companions], ‘Are we not going to die,
M. Sarwar He will ask his companion, "Did you not say that there would only be one death

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem Shall we never suffer?
Yusuf Ali "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"
W. Khan except for our first death? Are we not going to be punished?
M. Sarwar and that we would not be punished?"

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem This truly is the supreme triumph!’
Yusuf Ali Verily this is the supreme achievement!
W. Khan Truly, this is a great victory!’
M. Sarwar This is certainly the greatest triumph

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem Everyone should strive to attain this.
Yusuf Ali For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.
W. Khan It is for the like of this that all should strive.
M. Sarwar for which one must strive hard.

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem Is this the better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum,
Yusuf Ali Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?
W. Khan Is that better by way of hospitality or the Zaqqum tree,
M. Sarwar Is this not a better reward than the tree of Zaqqum

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem which we have made a test for the evildoers?
Yusuf Ali For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.
W. Khan which We have made as a test for the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar which We have made as a torment for the unjust?

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem This tree grows in the heart of the blazing Fire,
Yusuf Ali For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:
W. Khan For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hellfire:
M. Sarwar (Zaqqum) is a tree which grows from the deepest part of hell,

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem and its fruits are like devils’ heads.
Yusuf Ali The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:
W. Khan and its fruits are like devils’ heads.
M. Sarwar and its fruits are like the heads of devils.

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem They will fill their bellies eating from it;
Yusuf Ali Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
W. Khan They will eat from it and fill their bellies with it;
M. Sarwar The dwellers of hell will eat that fruit and fill-up their bellies.

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem then drink scalding water on top of it;
Yusuf Ali Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.
W. Khan then in addition to it they shall have a draught of boiling water to drink;
M. Sarwar Then they will have on top of it a mixture of boiling water.

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem then return to the blazing Fire.
Yusuf Ali Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.
W. Khan then surely they shall return to Hell.
M. Sarwar They can only return to hell.

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem They found their forefathers astray,
Yusuf Ali Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;
W. Khan They found their fathers had gone astray;
M. Sarwar They found their father going astray

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem and rushed to follow in their footsteps- before the disbelievers [of Mecca],
Yusuf Ali So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!
W. Khan so they are rushing to follow in their footsteps.
M. Sarwar and rushed to follow them.

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem most men in the past went astray,
Yusuf Ali And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray;-
W. Khan And assuredly many of the ancients went astray before them,
M. Sarwar Most of the ancient people had also gone astray.

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem even though We sent messengers to warn them.
Yusuf Ali But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-
W. Khan though We had sent warners among them.
M. Sarwar We had certainly sent warners to them.

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem See how those who were warned met their end!
Yusuf Ali Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-
W. Khan See how those who were warned met their end!
M. Sarwar See how terrible was the end of those who were warned.

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem Not so the true servants of God.
Yusuf Ali Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah.
W. Khan Not so the chosen servants of God.
M. Sarwar Only Our sincere servants were saved.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem Noah cried to Us, and how excellent was Our response!
Yusuf Ali (In the days of old), Noah cried to Us, and We are the best to hear prayer.
W. Khan Noah cried to Us, and how excellent was Our response!
M. Sarwar Noah called for help. How blessed was the answer which he received.

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem We saved him and his people from great distress,
Yusuf Ali And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity,
W. Khan We saved him and his people from great distress,
M. Sarwar We rescued him and his people from the greatest affliction

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem We let his offspring remain on the earth,
Yusuf Ali And made his progeny to endure (on this earth);
W. Khan and We made his offspring the only survivors.
M. Sarwar and We made his offspring the only survivors.

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem We let him be praised by later generations:
Yusuf Ali And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times:
W. Khan We left mention of him among later generations.
M. Sarwar We perpetuated his praise in later generations.

Verse 79

Abdel Haleem ‘Peace be upon Noah among all the nations!’
Yusuf Ali "Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!"
W. Khan Peace be upon Noah among all the peoples!
M. Sarwar Peace be with Noah among all men in the worlds.

Verse 80

Abdel Haleem This is how We reward those who do good:
Yusuf Ali Thus indeed do we reward those who do right.
W. Khan That is how We recompense the righteous:
M. Sarwar Thus do We reward the righteous ones.

Verse 81

Abdel Haleem he was truly one of Our faithful servants.
Yusuf Ali For he was one of our believing Servants.
W. Khan he was truly one of Our faithful servants.
M. Sarwar He was one of Our believing servants.

Verse 82

Abdel Haleem We drowned the rest.
Yusuf Ali Then the rest we overwhelmed in the Flood.
W. Khan We drowned the rest.
M. Sarwar We drowned all the others (besides Noah and his people).

Verse 83

Abdel Haleem Abraham was of the same faith:
Yusuf Ali Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham.
W. Khan Abraham was of the same faith:
M. Sarwar Abraham was one of his followers.

Verse 84

Abdel Haleem he came to his Lord with a devoted heart.
Yusuf Ali Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.
W. Khan he came to his Lord with a sound heart.
M. Sarwar He turned to his Lord with a sound heart

Verse 85

Abdel Haleem He said to his father and his people, ‘What are you worshipping?
Yusuf Ali Behold! he said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship?
W. Khan ‘Behold!’ he said to his father and to his people, ‘What are these that you worship?
M. Sarwar and asked his father and his people, "What is that you worship?

Verse 86

Abdel Haleem How can you choose false gods instead of the true God?
Yusuf Ali "Is it a falsehood- gods other than Allah- that ye desire?
W. Khan Would you serve false deities instead of God?
M. Sarwar Do you want to worship false idols as your lords besides God?

Verse 87

Abdel Haleem So what is your opinion about the Lord of all the Worlds?’
Yusuf Ali "Then what is your idea about the Lord of the worlds?"
W. Khan What do you think of the Lord of the Worlds?’
M. Sarwar What do you think about the Lord of the Universe?"

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem then he looked up to the stars.
Yusuf Ali Then did he cast a glance at the Stars.
W. Khan He looked up at the stars.
M. Sarwar The people invited him to attend their feast). Then he looked at the stars

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘I am sick,’
Yusuf Ali And he said, "I am indeed sick (at heart)!"
W. Khan And said, ‘I am sick,’
M. Sarwar and said, "I am sick!"

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem so [his people] turned away from him and left.
Yusuf Ali So they turned away from him, and departed.
W. Khan so they turned their backs on him and went off.
M. Sarwar All the people turned away from him

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem He turned to their gods and said,
Yusuf Ali Then did he turn to their gods and said, "will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)?...
W. Khan He turned to their gods and said, ‘Do you not eat?
M. Sarwar and he turned to their idols and asked them, "Do you eat?

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem ‘Do you not eat? Why do you not speak?’
Yusuf Ali "What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?"
W. Khan What is the matter with you that you do not speak?’
M. Sarwar Why do you not speak?"

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem then he turned and struck them with his right arm.
Yusuf Ali Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.
W. Khan then he turned on them, striking them down with his right hand.
M. Sarwar He struck them with his right hand.

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem His people hurried towards him,
Yusuf Ali Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).
W. Khan His people came rushing towards him,
M. Sarwar Thereupon the people came running to him.

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem but he said, ‘How can you worship things you carve with your own hands,
Yusuf Ali He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?
W. Khan but he said, ‘How can you worship things you carve with your own hands,
M. Sarwar He said, "How can you worship what you yourselves have carved

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem when it is God who has created you and all your handiwork?’
Yusuf Ali "But Allah has created you and your handwork!"
W. Khan when it is God who has created you and all your handiwork?’
M. Sarwar even though God created both you and that which you have made?"

Verse 97

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Build a pyre and throw him into the blazing fire.’
Yusuf Ali They said, "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!"
W. Khan They said, ‘Build a pyre for him and throw him into the blaze!’
M. Sarwar They said, "Let us build a fire and throw him into the flames".

Verse 98

Abdel Haleem They wanted to harm him, but We humiliated them.
Yusuf Ali (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!
W. Khan They wanted to harm him, but We humiliated them all.
M. Sarwar They plotted against him, but We brought humiliation upon them.

Verse 99

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘I will go to my Lord: He is sure to guide me.
Yusuf Ali He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!
W. Khan He said, ‘I will go to my Lord: He is sure to guide me.
M. Sarwar (Abraham) said, "I will go to my Lord who will guide me".

Verse 100

Abdel Haleem Lord, grant me a righteous son,’
Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"
W. Khan Lord, grant me a righteous son.’
M. Sarwar Abraham prayed, "Lord, grant me a righteous son".

Verse 101

Abdel Haleem so We gave him the good news that he would have a patient son.
Yusuf Ali So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.
W. Khan We gave him the good news that he would have a patient, forbearing son.
M. Sarwar We gave him the glad news of the birth of a forbearing son.

Verse 102

Abdel Haleem When the boy was old enough to work with his father, Abraham said, ‘My son, I have seen myself sacrificing you in a dream. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Father, do as you are commanded and, God willing, you will find me steadfast.’
Yusuf Ali Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"
W. Khan And when he reached the age when he could work with him, he said, ‘O my son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. So tell me what you think of it!’ He replied, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded; and God willing, you will find me steadfast.’
M. Sarwar When his son was old enough to work with him, he said, "My son, I have had a dream that I must sacrifice you. What do you think of this?" He replied, "Father, fulfill whatever you are commanded to do and you will find me patient, by the will of God".

Verse 103

Abdel Haleem When they had both submitted to God, and he had laid his son down on the side of his face,
Yusuf Ali So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),
W. Khan When they had both submitted to God, and he had laid his son down on his face,
M. Sarwar When they both agreed and Abraham had lain down his son on the side of his face (for slaughtering),

Verse 104

Abdel Haleem We called out to him, ‘Abraham,
Yusuf Ali We called out to him "O Abraham!
W. Khan We called out to him, ‘Abraham,
M. Sarwar We called to him, "Abraham,

Verse 105

Abdel Haleem you have fulfilled the dream.’ This is how We reward those who do good-
Yusuf Ali "Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
W. Khan you have fulfilled the dream.’ It is thus indeed that We reward those who do good—
M. Sarwar you have fulfilled what you were commanded to do in your dream." Thus do We reward the righteous ones.

Verse 106

Abdel Haleem it was a test to prove [their true characters]-
Yusuf Ali For this was obviously a trial-
W. Khan that surely was a manifest trial—
M. Sarwar It was certainly an open trial.

Verse 107

Abdel Haleem We ransomed his son with a momentous sacrifice,
Yusuf Ali And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:
W. Khan We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,
M. Sarwar We ransomed his son with a great sacrifice

Verse 108

Abdel Haleem and We let him be praised by succeeding generations:
Yusuf Ali And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
W. Khan and left him thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among later generations:
M. Sarwar and perpetuated his praise in later generations.

Verse 109

Abdel Haleem ‘Peace be upon Abraham!’
Yusuf Ali "Peace and salutation to Abraham!"
W. Khan ‘Peace and salutation to Abraham!’
M. Sarwar Peace be with Abraham.

Verse 110

Abdel Haleem This is how We reward those who do good:
Yusuf Ali Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
W. Khan That is how We recompense the righteous:
M. Sarwar Thus, do We reward the righteous ones.

Verse 111

Abdel Haleem truly he was one of Our faithful servants.
Yusuf Ali For he was one of our believing Servants.
W. Khan truly, he was one of Our faithful servants.
M. Sarwar He was one of Our believing servants.

Verse 112

Abdel Haleem We gave Abraham the good news of Isaac- a prophet and a righteous man-
Yusuf Ali And We gave him the good news of Isaac - a prophet,- one of the Righteous.
W. Khan We gave Abraham the good news of Isaac—a prophet and a righteous man—
M. Sarwar We gave him the glad news of the birth of Isaac, one of the righteous Prophets.

Verse 113

Abdel Haleem and blessed him and Isaac too: some of their offspring were good, but some clearly wronged themselves.
Yusuf Ali We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.
W. Khan and blessed him and Isaac too: some of their offspring were good, but some clearly sinned against their souls.
M. Sarwar We had blessed him and Isaac. Some of their offspring were righteous and others were openly unjust to themselves.

Verse 114

Abdel Haleem We also bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron:
Yusuf Ali Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron,
W. Khan We also bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron:
M. Sarwar We certainly bestowed Our favor upon Moses and Aaron

Verse 115

Abdel Haleem We saved them and their people from great distress;
Yusuf Ali And We delivered them and their people from (their) Great Calamity;
W. Khan We saved them and their people from great distress;
M. Sarwar and saved them and their people from great distress.

Verse 116

Abdel Haleem We helped them, so they were the ones to succeed;
Yusuf Ali And We helped them, so they overcame (their troubles);
W. Khan and We helped them, so that they were victorious;
M. Sarwar We helped them and they were victorious.

Verse 117

Abdel Haleem We gave them the Scripture that makes things clear;
Yusuf Ali And We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;
W. Khan and We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;
M. Sarwar We gave them the enlightening Book,

Verse 118

Abdel Haleem We guided them to the right path;
Yusuf Ali And We guided them to the Straight Way.
W. Khan and guided them to the straight path;
M. Sarwar guided them to the right path,

Verse 119

Abdel Haleem We let them be praised by succeeding generations:
Yusuf Ali And We left (this blessing) for them among generations (to come) in later times:
W. Khan and We left them thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among later generations:
M. Sarwar and perpetuated their praise in later generations.

Verse 120

Abdel Haleem ‘Peace be upon Moses and Aaron!’
Yusuf Ali "Peace and salutation to Moses and Aaron!"
W. Khan ‘Peace be upon Moses and Aaron!’
M. Sarwar Peace be with Moses and Aaron.

Verse 121

Abdel Haleem This is how We reward those who do good:
Yusuf Ali Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
W. Khan This is how We reward those who do good:
M. Sarwar Thus do We reward the righteous ones.

Verse 122

Abdel Haleem truly they were among Our faithful servants.
Yusuf Ali For they were two of our believing Servants.
W. Khan truly they were among Our faithful servants.
M. Sarwar They were two of Our believing servants.

Verse 123

Abdel Haleem Elijah too was one of the messengers.
Yusuf Ali So also was Elias among those sent (by Us).
W. Khan Elijah too was one of the messengers.
M. Sarwar Elias was certainly a Messenger.

Verse 124

Abdel Haleem He said to his people, ‘Have you no fear of God?
Yusuf Ali Behold, he said to his people, "Will ye not fear (Allah)?
W. Khan He said to his people, ‘Have you no fear [of God?]
M. Sarwar He told his people, "Why do you not have fear of God?

Verse 125

Abdel Haleem How can you invoke Baal and forsake the Most Gracious Creator,
Yusuf Ali "Will ye call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators,-
W. Khan Do you call on Baal and abandon the Best of Creators,
M. Sarwar Do you worship Ba`al and abandon the Best Creator.

Verse 126

Abdel Haleem God, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?’
Yusuf Ali "Allah, your Lord and Cherisher and the Lord and Cherisher of your fathers of old?"
W. Khan God your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?’
M. Sarwar who is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?"

Verse 127

Abdel Haleem but they rejected him. They will be brought to punishment as a consequence;
Yusuf Ali But they rejected him, and they will certainly be called up (for punishment),-
W. Khan but they rejected him, and thus will certainly be called to account;
M. Sarwar They called him a liar. Thus, all of them will suffer torment

Verse 128

Abdel Haleem not so the true servants of God.
Yusuf Ali Except the sincere and devoted Servants of Allah (among them).
W. Khan except the chosen servants of God.
M. Sarwar except the sincere servants of God.

Verse 129

Abdel Haleem We let him be praised by succeeding generations:
Yusuf Ali And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
W. Khan We left him thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among the following generations—
M. Sarwar We perpetuated his praise in the later generations.

Verse 130

Abdel Haleem ‘Peace be to Elijah!’
Yusuf Ali "Peace and salutation to such as Elias!"
W. Khan ‘Peace be on Elijah and his people!’
M. Sarwar Peace be with the followers of Elias.

Verse 131

Abdel Haleem This is how We reward those who do good:
Yusuf Ali Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
W. Khan It is thus indeed that We reward those who do good:
M. Sarwar In this way do We reward the righteous ones.

Verse 132

Abdel Haleem truly he was one of Our faithful servants.
Yusuf Ali For he was one of our believing Servants.
W. Khan surely he was one of Our believing servants.
M. Sarwar He was one of Our believing servants.

Verse 133

Abdel Haleem Lot was also one of the messengers.
Yusuf Ali So also was Lut among those sent (by Us).
W. Khan Lot was also one of the messengers.
M. Sarwar Lot was certainly a Messenger.

Verse 134

Abdel Haleem We saved him and all his family-
Yusuf Ali Behold, We delivered him and his adherents, all
W. Khan We saved him and all his people—
M. Sarwar We rescued him and his whole family,

Verse 135

Abdel Haleem except for an old woman who stayed behind-
Yusuf Ali Except an old woman who was among those who lagged behind:
W. Khan except for an old woman who stayed behind—
M. Sarwar except for an old woman who remained behind.

Verse 136

Abdel Haleem and We destroyed the rest.
Yusuf Ali Then We destroyed the rest.
W. Khan and We destroyed the rest.
M. Sarwar Then We totally destroyed the others.

Verse 137

Abdel Haleem You [people] pass by their ruins morning
Yusuf Ali Verily, ye pass by their (sites), by day-
W. Khan You pass by their ruins morning
M. Sarwar You pass by (their ruined town) in the morning and at night.

Verse 138

Abdel Haleem and night: will you not take heed?
Yusuf Ali And by night: will ye not understand?
W. Khan and night: will you not take heed?
M. Sarwar Will you then not understand?

Verse 139

Abdel Haleem Jonah too was one of the messengers.
Yusuf Ali So also was Jonah among those sent (by Us).
W. Khan Jonah too was one of the messengers.
M. Sarwar Jonah was certainly a Messenger.

Verse 140

Abdel Haleem He fled to the overloaded ship.
Yusuf Ali When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden,
W. Khan He fled to the overloaded ship.
M. Sarwar He abandoned his people

Verse 141

Abdel Haleem They cast lots, he suffered defeat,
Yusuf Ali He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:
W. Khan And then they cast lots and he was the one who lost,
M. Sarwar and sailed away in a laden ship, wherein people cast lots. Because he lost, he was thrown into the water.

Verse 142

Abdel Haleem and a great fish swallowed him, for he had committed blameworthy acts.
Yusuf Ali Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.
W. Khan and the fish swallowed him while he was blaming himself.
M. Sarwar The fish swallowed him up and he deserved (all this).

Verse 143

Abdel Haleem If he had not been one of those who glorified God,
Yusuf Ali Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,
W. Khan Had he not been one of those who acknowledge the glory of God,
M. Sarwar Had he not glorified God,

Verse 144

Abdel Haleem he would have stayed in its belly until the Day when all are raised up,
Yusuf Ali He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection.
W. Khan he would certainly have remained inside the fish till the Day of Resurrection.
M. Sarwar he would certainly have remained inside the fish until the Day of Resurrection.

Verse 145

Abdel Haleem but We cast him out, sick, on to a barren shore,
Yusuf Ali But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,
W. Khan But We caused him to be cast forth on to the beach, sick as he was,
M. Sarwar We cast him out of the fish unto dry land and he was sick.

Verse 146

Abdel Haleem and made a gourd tree grow above him.
Yusuf Ali And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.
W. Khan and We caused a gourd tree to grow over him.
M. Sarwar We made a plant of gourd grow up for him.

Verse 147

Abdel Haleem We sent him to a hundred thousand people or more.
Yusuf Ali And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.
W. Khan We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more,
M. Sarwar We sent him to a hundred thousand or more people.

Verse 148

Abdel Haleem They believed, so We let them live out their lives.
Yusuf Ali And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.
W. Khan and they believed in him: so We let them live in ease for a while.
M. Sarwar They believed in him so We granted them enjoyment for an appointed time.

Verse 149

Abdel Haleem Now [Muhammad], ask the disbelievers: is it true that your Lord has daughters, while they choose sons for themselves?
Yusuf Ali Now ask them their opinion: Is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?-
W. Khan Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them, "Do daughters belong to your Lord and sons to them?

Verse 150

Abdel Haleem Did We create the angels as females while they were watching?
Yusuf Ali Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?
W. Khan Did We create the angels females, to which they were witnesses?
M. Sarwar Have We created the angels as females before their very eyes?

Verse 151

Abdel Haleem No indeed! It is one of their lies when they say,
Yusuf Ali Is it not that they say, from their own invention,
W. Khan No indeed! It is one of their fabrications when they say:
M. Sarwar It is only because of their false invention that they say,

Verse 152

Abdel Haleem ‘God has begotten.’ How they lie!
Yusuf Ali "Allah has begotten children"? but they are liars!
W. Khan ‘God has begotten children.’They are truly liars.
M. Sarwar 'God has begotten a son.' They are certainly liars.

Verse 153

Abdel Haleem Did He truly choose daughters in preference to sons?
Yusuf Ali Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons?
W. Khan Has He chosen daughters over sons?
M. Sarwar Has He chosen daughters in preference to sons?

Verse 154

Abdel Haleem What is the matter with you? How do you form your judgements?
Yusuf Ali What is the matter with you? How judge ye?
W. Khan What is the matter with you? How do you form your judgement?
M. Sarwar Woe to you! How terrible is your Judgment.

Verse 155

Abdel Haleem Do you not reflect?
Yusuf Ali Will ye not then receive admonition?
W. Khan Will you not then reflect?
M. Sarwar Do you not understand?

Verse 156

Abdel Haleem Do you perhaps have clear authority?
Yusuf Ali Or have ye an authority manifest?
W. Khan Or have you clear evidence?
M. Sarwar Do you have clear authority?

Verse 157

Abdel Haleem Bring your scriptures, if you are telling the truth.
Yusuf Ali Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful!
W. Khan Then produce your scriptures, if you are telling the truth.
M. Sarwar Bring your book if what you say is true.

Verse 158

Abdel Haleem They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be brought before Him.
Yusuf Ali And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his Judgment-Seat)!
W. Khan They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be produced before Him [for judgement].
M. Sarwar They have said that there is a relationship between Him and the jinn. The jinn certainly know that they will all be brought to suffer torment.

Verse 159

Abdel Haleem God is far above what they attribute to Him-
Yusuf Ali Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)!
W. Khan God is far above what they attribute to Him—
M. Sarwar God is too glorious to be described as they describe Him

Verse 160

Abdel Haleem the true servants of God do not do such things-
Yusuf Ali Not (so do) the Servants of Allah, sincere and devoted.
W. Khan but not so the true servants of God—
M. Sarwar except the servants of God, sincere and devoted.

Verse 161

Abdel Haleem and neither you nor what you worship
Yusuf Ali For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship-
W. Khan neither you nor what you worship
M. Sarwar You and whatever you worship

Verse 162

Abdel Haleem can lure away from God any
Yusuf Ali Can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah,
W. Khan can lure away from God any
M. Sarwar cannot mislead anyone

Verse 163

Abdel Haleem except those who will burn in Hell.
Yusuf Ali Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire!
W. Khan except those who will burn in Hell.
M. Sarwar except those who are doomed to enter hell.

Verse 164

Abdel Haleem [The angels say], ‘Every single one of us has his appointed place:
Yusuf Ali (Those ranged in ranks say): "Not one of us but has a place appointed;
W. Khan [The angels say], ‘Every single one of us has his place assigned:
M. Sarwar The angels say, "Each of us has an appointed place.

Verse 165

Abdel Haleem we are ranged in ranks.
Yusuf Ali "And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service);
W. Khan we are those who stand ranged in ranks.
M. Sarwar We stand in ranks (for prayer)

Verse 166

Abdel Haleem We glorify God.’
Yusuf Ali "And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!"
W. Khan We glorify God.’
M. Sarwar and we glorify God".

Verse 167

Abdel Haleem [The disbelievers] used to say,
Yusuf Ali And there were those who said,
W. Khan They say,
M. Sarwar Even though they (unbelievers) say,

Verse 168

Abdel Haleem ‘If only we had a scripture like previous people,
Yusuf Ali "If only we had had before us a Message from those of old,
W. Khan ‘If we had had with us a Book like that of the people of old,
M. Sarwar "Had we received guidance from the people living before us,

Verse 169

Abdel Haleem we would be true servants of God,’
Yusuf Ali "We should certainly have been Servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!"
W. Khan we would surely have been God’s chosen servants,’
M. Sarwar we would have certainly been sincere servants of God".

Verse 170

Abdel Haleem yet now they reject [the Quran]. They will soon realize.
Yusuf Ali But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know!
W. Khan but they have rejected it, [the Quran] and they shall soon learn!
M. Sarwar They have rejected the Quran. They will soon know the consequences (of their disbelief).

Verse 171

Abdel Haleem Our word has already been given to Our servants the messengers:
Yusuf Ali Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to our Servants sent (by Us),
W. Khan And surely Our word has gone forth respecting Our servants, the messengers:
M. Sarwar We decreed that Our Messenger servants

Verse 172

Abdel Haleem it is they who will be helped,
Yusuf Ali That they would certainly be assisted,
W. Khan that it is certainly they who will be helped;
M. Sarwar will certainly be victorious

Verse 173

Abdel Haleem and the ones who support Our cause will be the winners.
Yusuf Ali And that Our forces,- they surely must conquer.
W. Khan and that it is Our host that would certainly triumph.
M. Sarwar and that Our army will be triumphant.

Verse 174

Abdel Haleem So [Prophet] turn away from the disbelievers for a while.
Yusuf Ali So turn thou away from them for a little while,
W. Khan So turn away from them for a while.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), stay away from them for a while

Verse 175

Abdel Haleem Watch them: they will soon see.
Yusuf Ali And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!
W. Khan Watch them: they will soon see.
M. Sarwar and watch them. They, too, will watch.

Verse 176

Abdel Haleem Do they really wish to hasten Our punishment?
Yusuf Ali Do they wish (indeed) to hurry on our Punishment?
W. Khan Do they really wish to hasten Our punishment?
M. Sarwar Do they want to suffer Our torment immediately?

Verse 177

Abdel Haleem When it descends on their courtyards, how ter-rible that morning will be for those who were warned!
Yusuf Ali But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)!
W. Khan When it descends on their courtyards, how terrible that morning will be for those who were warned!
M. Sarwar When it descends into their courtyard, it will be terrible for those who have already been warned.

Verse 178

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], turn away from the disbelievers for a while.
Yusuf Ali So turn thou away from them for a little while,
W. Khan So turn away from them for a while.
M. Sarwar Stay away from them for a while

Verse 179

Abdel Haleem Watch them: they will soon see.
Yusuf Ali And watch (how they fare) and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!
W. Khan And watch, for they will soon see.
M. Sarwar and watch. They, too, will watch.

Verse 180

Abdel Haleem Your Lord, the Lord of Glory, is far above what they attribute to Him.
Yusuf Ali Glory to thy Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)!
W. Khan Glory be to your Lord: the Lord of Glory is far above what they attribute to Him.
M. Sarwar Your Lord, the Lord of Honor, is too exalted to be considered as they describe Him.

Verse 181

Abdel Haleem Peace be upon the messengers
Yusuf Ali And Peace on the messengers!
W. Khan Peace be upon the Messengers
M. Sarwar Peace be with the Messengers (of God).

Verse 182

Abdel Haleem and praise be to God the Lord of all the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali And Praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.
W. Khan and praise be to God, the Lord of all the Worlds.
M. Sarwar It is only God, the Lord of the Universe, who deserves all praise.
