Chapter 44

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Ha Mim
Yusuf Ali Ha-Mim.
W. Khan Ha Mim
M. Sarwar Ha. Mim.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem By the Scripture that makes things clear,
Yusuf Ali By the Book that makes things clear;-
W. Khan By the Book that makes things clear,
M. Sarwar I swear by the illustrious Book.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem truly We sent it down on a blessed night––We have always sent warnings––
Yusuf Ali We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil).
W. Khan surely We sent it down on a blessed night—We have always sent warnings—
M. Sarwar that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem a night when every matter of wisdom was made distinct
Yusuf Ali In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom,
W. Khan on that night every wise decree is specified
M. Sarwar On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem at Our command––We have always sent messages to man––
Yusuf Ali By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations),
W. Khan by Our own command—We have been sending messages,
M. Sarwar The command that We have been sending

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem as a mercy [Prophet] from your Lord who sees and knows all,
Yusuf Ali As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things);
W. Khan as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all,
M. Sarwar as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between––if only you people were firm believers––
Yusuf Ali The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith.
W. Khan He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them—if only you would really believe—
M. Sarwar He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem there is no god but Him: He gives life and death––He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers––
Yusuf Ali There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors.
W. Khan there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death—He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers,
M. Sarwar There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem yet in [their state of] doubt they take nothing seriously.
Yusuf Ali Yet they play about in doubt.
W. Khan yet, they toy with their doubts.
M. Sarwar In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], watch out for the Day when the sky brings forth clouds of smoke for all to see.
Yusuf Ali Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible,
W. Khan [Prophet], watch out for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke.
M. Sarwar Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem It will envelop the people. They will cry, ‘This is a terrible torment!
Yusuf Ali Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous.
W. Khan That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment.
M. Sarwar which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem Lord relieve us from this torment! We believe!’
Yusuf Ali (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!"
W. Khan Then they will say, ‘Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You.’
M. Sarwar Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers".

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem How will this [sudden] faith benefit them? When a prophet came to warn them plainly,
Yusuf Ali How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,-
W. Khan How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly?
M. Sarwar How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them,

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem they turned their backs on him, saying, ‘He is tutored! He is possessed!’
Yusuf Ali Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!"
W. Khan Then they turned away from him and said, ‘He is a madman, taught by others!’
M. Sarwar and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person".

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem We shall hold the torment back for a while ––you are sure to return [to Us]––
Yusuf Ali We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways).
W. Khan Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth.
M. Sarwar We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem and on the Day We seize [them] mightily We shall exact retribution.
Yusuf Ali One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution!
W. Khan On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution.
M. Sarwar However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem We tested the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them,
Yusuf Ali We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable,
W. Khan We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them,
M. Sarwar We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying,

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem saying, ‘Hand the servants of God over to me! I am a faithful messenger who has been sent to you.
Yusuf Ali Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust;
W. Khan saying, ‘Hand over God’s servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you.
M. Sarwar "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Do not consider yourselves to be above God! I come to you with clear authority.
Yusuf Ali "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest.
W. Khan Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority.
M. Sarwar Do not consider yourselves above God? I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness).

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem I seek refuge in my Lord and yours against your insults!
Yusuf Ali "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me.
W. Khan I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death].
M. Sarwar I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem If you do not believe me, just let me be.’
Yusuf Ali "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me."
W. Khan If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me.’
M. Sarwar If you do not want to believe, leave me alone".

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem [Moses] cried to his Lord, ‘These people are evildoers!’
Yusuf Ali (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin."
W. Khan Then he cried out to his Lord, ‘These are sinful people.’
M. Sarwar Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners".

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem [God replied], ‘Escape in the night with My servants, for you are sure to be pursued.
Yusuf Ali (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued.
W. Khan God said, ‘Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued.
M. Sarwar We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem Leave the sea behind you parted and their army will be drowned.’
Yusuf Ali "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned."
W. Khan Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned.’
M. Sarwar Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem Many a garden and spring they left behind,
Yusuf Ali How many were the gardens and springs they left behind,
W. Khan How many gardens and fountains they left behind them,
M. Sarwar How many were the gardens, springs,

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem many a cornfield and noble building,
Yusuf Ali And corn-fields and noble buildings,
W. Khan and cornfields and splendid buildings,
M. Sarwar corn-fields, gracious mansions,

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem many a thing in which they had delighted:
Yusuf Ali And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight!
W. Khan and pleasant things in which they delighted!
M. Sarwar and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind!

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem We gave these to another people to inherit.
Yusuf Ali Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)!
W. Khan Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit.
M. Sarwar We gave these as an inheritance to other people.

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem Neither heavens nor earth shed a tear for them, nor were they given any time.
Yusuf Ali And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again).
W. Khan Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite.
M. Sarwar The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem We saved the Children of Israel from their degrading suffering
Yusuf Ali We did deliver aforetime the Children of Israel from humiliating Punishment,
W. Khan We saved the Children of Israel from their humiliating torment
M. Sarwar We rescued the Israelites from the humiliating torment

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem at the hands of Pharaoh: he was a tyrant who exceeded all bounds.
Yusuf Ali Inflicted by Pharaoh, for he was arrogant (even) among inordinate transgressors.
W. Khan at the hands of Pharaoh: he was a tyrant who exceeded all bounds.
M. Sarwar and from the Pharaoh. He was the chief of the transgressors.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem We chose them knowingly above others:
Yusuf Ali And We chose them aforetime above the nations, knowingly,
W. Khan We knowingly chose them above all other people
M. Sarwar We gave preference to the Israelites over the other people with Our knowledge

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem We gave them revelations in which there was a clear test.
Yusuf Ali And granted them Signs in which there was a manifest trial
W. Khan and showed them signs in which there was a clear test.
M. Sarwar and sent them revelations of which some were a clear trial for them.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem These people here assert,
Yusuf Ali As to these (Quraish), they say forsooth:
W. Khan Yet those who deny the truth say,
M. Sarwar These people say,

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem ‘There is nothing beyond our one death: we will not be resurrected.
Yusuf Ali "There is nothing beyond our first death, and we shall not be raised again.
W. Khan there is nothing beyond our first death; we shall not be raised again.
M. Sarwar "After we die, we shall never be raised to life again.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem Bring back our forefathers, if what you say is true.’
Yusuf Ali "Then bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!"
W. Khan So bring our fathers [back], if what you say is true.
M. Sarwar Bring back to life our fathers if what you say is true".

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Are they better than the people of Tubbaand those who flourished before them? We destroyed them all- they were guilty.
Yusuf Ali What! Are they better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them? We destroyed them because they were guilty of sin.
W. Khan Are they better than the people of Tubba‘ and those who came before them? We destroyed them, because they were guilty of sin.
M. Sarwar Are they better than the tribe of Tubba (name of a Yemenite tribal chief) and those who lived before them? We destroyed them. They were criminals.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem We were not playing a pointless game when We created the heavens and earth and everything in between;
Yusuf Ali We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, merely in (idle) sport:
W. Khan We did not idly create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them;
M. Sarwar We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them for Our own amusement.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem We created them for a true purpose, but most people do not comprehend.
Yusuf Ali We created them not except for just ends: but most of them do not understand.
W. Khan We did not create them save with a purpose, yet most people have no knowledge of this.
M. Sarwar We have created them for a genuine purpose, but most people do not know.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem The Day of Decision is the time appointed for all;
Yusuf Ali Verily the Day of sorting out is the time appointed for all of them,-
W. Khan Truly, the Day of Decision is the appointed time for all of them,
M. Sarwar The appointed time for all of them will be the Day of Judgment

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem a Day when no friend can take another’s place.
Yusuf Ali The Day when no protector can avail his client in aught, and no help can they receive,
W. Khan the Day when no friend shall be of the least avail to another, nor shall any be helped,
M. Sarwar (when wrong will be distinguished from right). On this day friends will be of no benefit to one another, nor will they receive any help

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem No one will receive any help except for those to whom God shows mercy: He is the Mighty, the Merciful Lord.
Yusuf Ali Except such as receive Allah's Mercy: for He is Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
W. Khan save those to whom God shows mercy. Surely, He is the Mighty, the Merciful One.[38]
M. Sarwar except for those to whom God grants mercy. He is Majestic and All-merciful.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem The tree of Zaqqum
Yusuf Ali Verily the tree of Zaqqum
W. Khan Surely the fruit of the Zaqqum tree
M. Sarwar The tree of Zaqqum

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem will be food for the sinners:
Yusuf Ali Will be the food of the Sinful,-
W. Khan shall be food for the sinners:
M. Sarwar is food for the sinner.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem [hot] as molten metal, it boils in their bellies
Yusuf Ali Like molten brass; it will boil in their insides.
W. Khan like the dregs of oil, it shall boil in their bellies,
M. Sarwar It will be like molted brass which will boil in the bellies

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem like seething water.
Yusuf Ali Like the boiling of scalding water.
W. Khan like the boiling of hot water.
M. Sarwar like water.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem ‘Take him! Thrust him into the depths of Hell!
Yusuf Ali (A voice will cry: "Seize ye him and drag him into the midst of the Blazing Fire!
W. Khan [A voice will cry], ‘Seize him and drag him into the midst of Hell.
M. Sarwar (It will be said of such sinners), "Seize them and drag them into the middle of hell.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem Pour scalding water over his head as punishment!’
Yusuf Ali "Then pour over his head the Penalty of Boiling Water,
W. Khan Then pour boiling water over his head as punishment.
M. Sarwar Then pour unto their heads the boiling water to torment them".

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem ‘Taste this, you powerful, respected man!
Yusuf Ali "Taste thou (this)! Truly wast thou mighty, full of honour!
W. Khan Taste this; you who considered yourself the mighty, the honourable!
M. Sarwar They will be told, "Suffer the torment. You had thought yourselves to be majestic and honorable.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem This is what you doubted.’
Yusuf Ali "Truly this is what ye used to doubt!"
W. Khan This is what you doubted?’
M. Sarwar This is the torment that you persistently doubted".

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem But those mindful of God will be in a safe place
Yusuf Ali As to the Righteous (they will be) in a position of Security,
W. Khan But those mindful of God will be in a safe place,
M. Sarwar The pious ones will be in a secure place

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem amid Gardens and springs,
Yusuf Ali Among Gardens and Springs;
W. Khan among gardens and springs,
M. Sarwar amid gardens and springs,

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem clothed in silk and fine brocade, facing one another:
Yusuf Ali Dressed in fine silk and in rich brocade, they will face each other;
W. Khan dressed in fine silk and in rich brocade, and they will face each other:
M. Sarwar clothed in fine silk and rich brocade, sitting face to face with one another.

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem so it will be. We shall wed them to maidens with large, dark eyes.
Yusuf Ali So; and We shall join them to fair women with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes.
W. Khan so it will be. We shall wed them to maidens with large, dark eyes.
M. Sarwar We shall unite them to maidens with big black and white lovely eyes.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem Secure and contented, they will call for every kind of fruit.
Yusuf Ali There can they call for every kind of fruit in peace and security;
W. Khan They will call therein for every kind of fruit, in peace and security.
M. Sarwar They will be offered all kinds of fruits, in peace and security.

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem After the one death they will taste death no more. God will guard them from the torment of Hell,
Yusuf Ali Nor will they there taste Death, except the first death; and He will preserve them from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire,-
W. Khan They will not taste death therein, save the first death. God will save them from the torment of Hell
M. Sarwar They will not experience any death other than that which they have already been through.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem a bounty from your Lord. That is the supreme triumph.
Yusuf Ali As a Bounty from thy Lord! that will be the supreme achievement!
W. Khan as an act of grace. That will be the supreme triumph.
M. Sarwar God will protect them from the torment of hell as a favor from your Lord. (Muhammad), this is certainly the greatest triumph.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem We have made this Quran easy to understand- in your own language [Prophet]- so that they may take heed.
Yusuf Ali Verily, We have made this (Qur'an) easy, in thy tongue, in order that they may give heed.
W. Khan We have made this Quran easy to understand—in your own language—so that they may take heed.
M. Sarwar We have made the Quran easy for you to recite so that perhaps they may take heed.

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem So wait; the disbelievers too are waiting.
Yusuf Ali So wait thou and watch; for they (too) are waiting.
W. Khan Wait then; they too are waiting.
M. Sarwar Wait (for God's decree) and they too will be waiting.
