Verse 2

Abdel Haleem This Scripture is sent down from God, the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali The revelation of the Book is from Allah the Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom.
W. Khan This Scripture is sent down from God, the Mighty and Wise One.
M. Sarwar This Book is revealed from God, the Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem There are signs in the heavens and the earth for those who believe:
Yusuf Ali Verily in the heavens and the earth, are Signs for those who believe.
W. Khan There are signs in the heavens and the earth for those who believe:
M. Sarwar In the heavens and the earth there is evidence (of the Truth) for the believers.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem in the creation of you, in the creatures God scattered on earth, there are signs for people of sure faith;
Yusuf Ali And in the creation of yourselves and the fact that animals are scattered (through the earth), are Signs for those of assured Faith.
W. Khan in your own creation and all the creatures He has spread about, there are signs for people of sure faith;
M. Sarwar In your creation and in that of the beasts living on earth there is evidence of the Truth for the people who have strong faith.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem in the alternation of night and day, in the rain God provides, sending it down from the sky and reviving the dead earth with it, and in His shifting of the winds there are signs for those who use their reason.
Yusuf Ali And in the alternation of Night and Day, and the fact that Allah sends down Sustenance from the sky, and revives therewith the earth after its death, and in the change of the winds,- are Signs for those that are wise.
W. Khan and in the succession of night and day, and in the means of subsistence which God sends down from the skies, giving life thereby to the earth after it had been lifeless, and in the circulation of the winds: [in all this] there are signs for people who use their reason.
M. Sarwar In the alternation of the night and the day, the sustenance which God has sent down from the sky to revive the barren earth, and in the changing of the direction of the winds there is evidence of the truth for the people of understanding.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem These are God’s signs that We recount to you [Prophet, to show] the Truth. If they deny God and His revelations, what message will they believe in?
Yusuf Ali Such are the Signs of Allah, which We rehearse to thee in Truth; then in what exposition will they believe after (rejecting) Allah and His Signs?
W. Khan These are God’s revelations, which We recite to you in all truth. But if they deny God and His revelations, in what message will they believe?
M. Sarwar These are the revelations of God which We recite to you for a genuine purpose. In what statements other than God's and His revelations will they then believe?

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Woe to every lying sinful person
Yusuf Ali Woe to each sinful dealer in Falsehoods:
W. Khan Woe to every sinful liar!
M. Sarwar Woe to every sinful liar!

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem who hears God’s revelations being recited to him, yet persists in his arrogance as if he had never heard them––[Prophet] bring him news of a painful torment!––
Yusuf Ali He hears the Signs of Allah rehearsed to him, yet is obstinate and lofty, as if he had not heard them: then announce to him a Penalty Grievous!
W. Khan He hears God’s revelations being recited to him, yet persists in his arrogance as if he had never heard them. Forewarn him of a painful punishment.
M. Sarwar He hears the revelations of God which are recited to him, then persists in his arrogance as if he had not even heard them. Tell him that he will suffer a painful torment.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem who, if he knows anything about Our revelations, ridicules it! Such people will have a humiliating torment:
Yusuf Ali And when he learns something of Our Signs, he takes them in jest: for such there will be a humiliating Penalty.
W. Khan When he learns something of Our revelations, he derides them: for such there will be humiliating torment.
M. Sarwar When he learns about some of Our revelations, he mocks them. Such people will suffer a humiliating torment.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Hell lurks behind them and their gains will not benefit them, nor will those beings they took as protectors beside God––a tremendous torment awaits them.
Yusuf Ali In front of them is Hell: and of no profit to them is anything they may have earned, nor any protectors they may have taken to themselves besides Allah: for them is a tremendous Penalty.
W. Khan In front of them is Hell; and of no profit to them is anything they may have earned, nor any protectors they may have taken to themselves besides God: for them there shall be a terrible punishment.
M. Sarwar Hell is awaiting them and none of their deeds will be of any benefit to them, nor will any guardian whom they have chosen besides God. They will suffer a great torment.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem This is true guidance; those who reject their Lord’s revelations will have a woeful torment.
Yusuf Ali This is (true) Guidance and for those who reject the Signs of their Lord, is a grievous Penalty of abomination.
W. Khan Such is Our guidance; those who reject their Lord’s revelations shall suffer a woeful punishment.
M. Sarwar This (Quran) is a guidance. Those who reject the revelations of their Lord will suffer the most painful punishment.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem It is God who subjected the sea for you––ships sail on it by His command so that you can seek His bounty and give Him thanks––
Yusuf Ali It is Allah Who has subjected the sea to you, that ships may sail through it by His command, that ye may seek of his Bounty, and that ye may be grateful.
W. Khan It is God who has subjected the sea to you so that you may sail thereon by His command, and so that you may seek His bounty, and so that you may be grateful.
M. Sarwar God has made the sea subservient to you so that ships sail on by His command and you seek His favors. Perhaps you will be grateful.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem He has subjected all that is in the heavens and the earth for your benefit, as a gift from Him. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect.
Yusuf Ali And He has subjected to you, as from Him, all that is in the heavens and on earth: Behold, in that are Signs indeed for those who reflect.
W. Khan He has subjected whatever is in heaven and on the earth to you; it is all from Him. In that are signs for those who ponder.
M. Sarwar He has also made subservient to you all that is in the heavens and the earth. In this there is evidence (of the Truth) for those who use their minds.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem Tell the believers to forgive those who do not fear God’s days [of punishment]––He will requite people for what they have done.
Yusuf Ali Tell those who believe, to forgive those who do not look forward to the Days of Allah: It is for Him to recompense (for good or ill) each People according to what they have earned.
W. Khan Tell the believers to ignore those who do not believe in the coming of the days of God. He will requite people for what they have done.
M. Sarwar Tell the believers to forgive those who do not have faith in the days of God (Day of Judgment) and Resurrection. God will give due recompense to all the people for their deeds.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem Whoever does good benefits himself, and whoever does evil harms himself: you will all be returned to your Lord.
Yusuf Ali If any one does a righteous deed, it ensures to the benefit of his own soul; if he does evil, it works against (his own soul). In the end will ye (all) be brought back to your Lord.
W. Khan Whoever does what is just and right, does so for his own good; and whoever does evil, does so to his own detriment, and you shall all return to your Lord.
M. Sarwar One who acts righteously does so for his own benefit and one who commits evil does so against his own soul. To your Lord you will all return.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem We gave scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to the Children of Israel; We provided them with good things and favoured them above others;
Yusuf Ali We did aforetime grant to the Children of Israel the Book the Power of Command, and Prophethood; We gave them, for Sustenance, things good and pure; and We favoured them above the nations.
W. Khan We gave Scriptures, wisdom and prophethood to the Children of Israel, and provided them with good things and favoured them over all other people.
M. Sarwar We gave the Book to the Israelites, the commandments, and prophethood, granted them pure sustenance, and gave them preference above all people.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem We gave them clear proof in matters [of religion]. They differed among themselves out of mutual rivalry, only after knowledge came to them: on the Day of Resurrection your Lord will judge between them regarding their differences.
Yusuf Ali And We granted them Clear Signs in affairs (of Religion): it was only after knowledge had been granted to them that they fell into schisms, through insolent envy among themselves. Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment as to those matters in which they set up differences.
W. Khan We gave them clear arguments in matters [of religion]. It was only after knowledge came to them that they differed among themselves out of mutual rivalry. On the Day of Resurrection your Lord will judge between them regarding their differences.
M. Sarwar We also gave them clear evidence in support of the true religion. Only after having received knowledge did they create differences among themselves because of their rebelliousness. Your Lord will issue His decree concerning their differences on the Day of Judgment.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Now We have set you [Muhammad] on a clear religious path, so follow it. Do not follow the desires of those who lack [true] knowledge-
Yusuf Ali Then We put thee on the (right) Way of Religion: so follow thou that (Way), and follow not the desires of those who know not.
W. Khan Then We set you on a clear path [of religion]: so follow it, and do not yield to the desires of those who have no knowledge.
M. Sarwar We have established for you a code of conduct and a religion. Follow it and do not follow the desires of the ignorant people.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem they cannot help you against God in any way. Wrongdoers only have each other to protect them; the righteous have God Himself as their protector.
Yusuf Ali They will be of no use to thee in the sight of Allah: it is only Wrong-doers (that stand as) protectors, one to another: but Allah is the Protector of the Righteous.
W. Khan They can be of no avail to you against God. The wrongdoers are friends of one another, while the friend of the righteous is God.
M. Sarwar They will never be sufficient (protection) for you in place of God. The unjust are each other's friends, but God is the guardian of the pious ones.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem This [revelation] is a means of insight for people, a source of guidance and mercy for those of sure faith.
Yusuf Ali These are clear evidences to men and a Guidance and Mercy to those of assured Faith.
W. Khan This [Book] brings enlightenment and guidance to mankind, and is a blessing for those who have firm faith.
M. Sarwar This (Quran) is an enlightenment for the people and a guide and mercy for the people who have strong faith.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem Do those who commit evil deeds really think that We will deal with them in the same way as those who believe and do righteous deeds, that they will be alike in their living and their dying? How badly they judge!
Yusuf Ali What! Do those who seek after evil ways think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe and do righteous deeds,- that equal will be their life and their death? Ill is the judgment that they make.
W. Khan Do those who commit evil deeds imagine that We shall deal with them in the same way as We deal with those who have attained to faith and do righteous deeds, that they will be alike in their living and their dying? How badly they judge!
M. Sarwar Do the people who commit evil think that We shall make their life and death like that of the righteously striving believers? How terrible is their Judgment!

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem God created the heavens and earth for a true purpose: to reward each soul according to its deeds. They will not be wronged.
Yusuf Ali Allah created the heavens and the earth for just ends, and in order that each soul may find the recompense of what it has earned, and none of them be wronged.
W. Khan God has created the heavens and the earth for a true purpose, so that every soul may be rewarded for whatever it has earned, and no one will be wronged.
M. Sarwar God has created the heavens and the earth for a genuine purpose so that every soul will be duly recompensed for its deeds without being wronged.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], consider the one who has taken his own desire as a god, whom God allows to stray in the face of knowledge, sealing his ears and heart and covering his eyes- who can guide such a person after God [has done this]? Will you [people] not take heed?
Yusuf Ali Then seest thou such a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart (and understanding), and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition?
W. Khan [Prophet], consider the one who has taken his own desire as a deity, whom God allows to stray in the face of knowledge, sealing his ears and heart and covering his eyes—who can guide such a person after God [has abandoned him]? Will you not take heed?
M. Sarwar Have you seen the one who has chosen his desires as his lord? God has knowingly caused him to go astray, sealed his ears and heart and veiled his vision. Who besides God can guide him? Will they, then, not take heed?

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem They say, ‘There is only our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time destroys us.’ They have no knowledge of this; they only follow guesswork. Their only argument,
Yusuf Ali And they say: "What is there but our life in this world? We shall die and we live, and nothing but time can destroy us." But of that they have no knowledge: they merely conjecture:
W. Khan They say, ‘There is nothing but our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time destroys us.’ They have no knowledge of this; they only follow conjecture.
M. Sarwar They have said, "The only life is this worldly life and here we shall live and die. It is only time which will destroy us" They have no knowledge about this. It is only their guesswork.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem when Our clear revelations are recited to them, is to say, ‘Bring back our forefathers if what you say is true.’
Yusuf Ali And when Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them their argument is nothing but this: They say, "Bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!"
W. Khan Whenever Our clear revelations are recited to them, their only argument is to say, ‘Bring back to us our forefathers, if what you say be true.’
M. Sarwar When Our enlightening revelations are recited to them, their only argument against it is, "Bring our forefathers back to life if what you say is true".

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], say, ‘It is God who gives you life, then causes you to die, and then He gathers you all to the Day of Resurrection of which there is no doubt, though most people do not comprehend.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "It is Allah Who gives you life, then gives you death; then He will gather you together for the Day of Judgment about which there is no doubt": But most men do not understand.
W. Khan Say, ‘God gives you life, then causes you to die, and then will gather you together for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know it.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "It is God who gives you life and causes you to die. He will bring you together on the inevitable Day of Judgment," but most people do not know.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem Control of everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God. When the Hour comes, those who follow falsehood will be the losers on that Day.
Yusuf Ali To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and the Day that the Hour of Judgment is established,- that Day will the dealers in Falsehood perish!
W. Khan To God belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; on the Day when the Hour comes, those who follow falsehood will be the losers.
M. Sarwar To God belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. On the day when the Hour of Doom arrives, the followers of falsehood will be lost.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem You will see every community kneeling. Every community will be summoned to its record: ‘Today you will be repaid for what you did.
Yusuf Ali And thou wilt see every sect bowing the knee: Every sect will be called to its Record: "This Day shall ye be recompensed for all that ye did!
W. Khan You will see every people on their knees, every people shall be summoned to its Record [and a voice will say], ‘Today you will be requited for your deeds.
M. Sarwar You will see all the people kneeling down. Everyone will be summoned to the Book (containing the record of their deeds). They will be told, "On this day you will be recompensed for what you have done".

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem Here is Our record that tells the truth about you: We have been recording everything you do.’
Yusuf Ali "This Our Record speaks about you with truth: For We were wont to put on Record all that ye did."
W. Khan This record of ours will declare the truth about you: We have been recording whatever you have been doing.’
M. Sarwar This is Our Book. It will tell you the truth. We have made a copy of all that you have done.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem Those who believed and did good deeds will be admitted by their Lord into His mercy- that is the clearest triumph-
Yusuf Ali Then, as to those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them to His Mercy that will be the achievement for all to see.
W. Khan Those who believed and did good deeds will be admitted by their Lord into His mercy—that shall be the manifest triumph.
M. Sarwar The Lord will admit the righteously striving, believing people into His mercy. This is certainly a clear victory.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem but those who disbelieved [will be asked]: ‘When My revelations were recited to you, were you not arrogant and persistent in wicked deeds?
Yusuf Ali But as to those who rejected Allah, (to them will be said): "Were not Our Signs rehearsed to you? But ye were arrogant, and were a people given to sin!
W. Khan But those who rejected the truth [will be asked], ‘When My revelations were recited to you, were you not arrogant and did you not persist in wicked deeds?
M. Sarwar To the unbelievers the Lord will say, "Were not Our revelations recited to you and did not you arrogantly reject them? You were a sinful people".

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem When it was said to you, “God’s promise is true: there is no doubt about the Hour,” did you not reply, “We know nothing of the Hour. This is only conjecture in our opinion. We are not convinced”?’
Yusuf Ali "And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour- there was no doubt about its (coming), ye used to say, 'We know not what is the hour: we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'"
W. Khan When it was said to you, “God’s promise is true: there is no doubt about the Hour,” did you not reply, “We do not know what the Hour is. We think it to be nothing but a conjecture, and we are not convinced”?’
M. Sarwar When it was said that the promise of God is true and that the Hour would inevitably come, you said, "We do not know what the Hour of Doom is, we are suspicious about it and we are not convinced".

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem The evil of their actions will [then] become clear to them. The punishment they mocked will engulf them.
Yusuf Ali Then will appear to them the evil (fruits) of what they did, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!
W. Khan The evil of their actions will then become clear to them. The punishment they mocked will engulf them.
M. Sarwar Their evil deeds will be revealed to them and (the torment) which they had mocked will surround them.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem It will be said, ‘Today We shall ignore you just as you ignored your appointment with this Day. The Fire will be your home and no one will help you,
Yusuf Ali It will also be said: "This Day We will forget you as ye forgot the meeting of this Day of yours! and your abode is the Fire, and no helpers have ye!
W. Khan It will be said to them, ‘This Day We shall forget you, as you yourselves forgot that you would meet this Day. Your abode shall be the Fire, and you shall have no helpers.
M. Sarwar They will be told, "On this day We shall forget you in the same way that you had forgotten your coming into Our presence. Your dwelling will be hell fire and no one will help you.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem because you received God’s revelations with ridicule and were deceived by worldly life.’ They will not be brought out of the Fire on that Day, nor will they be given the chance to make amends.
Yusuf Ali "This, because ye used to take the Signs of Allah in jest, and the life of the world deceived you:" (From) that Day, therefore, they shall not be taken out thence, nor shall they be received into Grace.
W. Khan That is because you made a mockery of God’s revelations and were deluded by the life of this world.’Therefore, today they will not be brought out of the Fire, nor will they be allowed to make amends.
M. Sarwar This is only because you had mocked the revelations of God and the worldly life had deceived you. On this day they will not be taken out of hell, nor will they be granted any favors.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem So praise be to God, Lord of the heavens and earth, Lord of the worlds.
Yusuf Ali Then Praise be to Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth,- Lord and Cherisher of all the Worlds!
W. Khan Praise, then, be to God, Lord of the heavens, and Lord of the earth, the Lord of all the worlds.
M. Sarwar It is only God, Lord of the heavens and the earth and Lord of the Universe who deserves all praise.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem True greatness in the heavens and the earth is rightfully His: He is the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali To Him be glory throughout the heavens and the earth: and He is Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom!
W. Khan All greatness belongs to Him in the heavens and earth. He is the Almighty, the All Wise.
M. Sarwar It is His greatness that dominates the heavens and the earth. He is the Majestic and All-wise.
