The Qurʾān

Chapter 51

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By those [winds] that scatter far and wide,
Yusuf Ali By the (Winds) that scatter broadcast;
W. Khan By the winds that scatter the dust,
M. Sarwar By the winds which carry dust particles,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem and those that are heavily laden,
Yusuf Ali And those that lift and bear away heavy weights;
W. Khan and those that bear the burden [of the rain],
M. Sarwar by the clouds which are heavily loaded with water,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem that speed freely,
Yusuf Ali And those that flow with ease and gentleness;
W. Khan and those speeding along with ease,
M. Sarwar by the ships which smoothly sail on the oceans,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem that distribute [rain] as ordained!
Yusuf Ali And those that distribute and apportion by Command;-
W. Khan and distributing the command of God at His behest!
M. Sarwar by the angels which distribute the affairs,

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem What you [people] are promised is true:
Yusuf Ali Verily that which ye are promised is true;
W. Khan What you are promised is certainly true:
M. Sarwar that what you are promised is certainly true

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem the Judgement will come––
Yusuf Ali And verily Judgment and Justice must indeed come to pass.
W. Khan the Judgement will surely come to pass—
M. Sarwar and the Day of Judgment will inevitably take place.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem by the sky with its pathways,
Yusuf Ali By the Sky with (its) numerous Paths,
W. Khan by the heaven full of tracks,
M. Sarwar By the beautiful heavens,

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem you differ in what you say––
Yusuf Ali Truly ye are in a doctrine discordant,
W. Khan surely you are deeply at variance [as to what to believe]—
M. Sarwar your ideas are confused.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem those who turn away from it are [truly] deceived.
Yusuf Ali Through which are deluded (away from the Truth) such as would be deluded.
W. Khan he is turned away from [the truth] who is destined to be so turned away.
M. Sarwar Let whoever wishes, turn away from Our Quran.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Perish the liars,
Yusuf Ali Woe to the falsehood-mongers,-
W. Khan May the conjecturers perish,
M. Sarwar Death to those whose opinions are merely baseless conjectures.

Verse 11

Sahih Intl Who are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.
Y. Emerick and those whose (thoughts) are dazed.
Yusuf Ali Those who (flounder) heedless in a flood of confusion:
W. Khan who flounder in the depths of ignorance.
M. Sarwar and who wander in the abyss of confusion.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem They ask, ‘When is this Judgement Day coming?’
Yusuf Ali They ask, "When will be the Day of Judgment and Justice?"
W. Khan They ask, ‘When will the Day of Judgement come?’
M. Sarwar They ask, "When it will be the Day of Judgment?"

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem On a Day when they will be punished by the Fire,
Yusuf Ali (It will be) a Day when they will be tried (and tested) over the Fire!
W. Khan It will be the Day when they are tormented at the Fire.
M. Sarwar On the Day of Judgment they will be punished by the fire

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem ‘Taste the punishment! This is what you wished to hasten.’
Yusuf Ali "Taste ye your trial! This is what ye used to ask to be hastened!"
W. Khan ‘Taste your trial. This is what you sought to hasten.’
M. Sarwar and will be told, "Suffer the torment which you wanted to experience immediately".

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem The righteous will be in Gardens with [flowing] springs.
Yusuf Ali As to the Righteous, they will be in the midst of Gardens and Springs,
W. Khan Surely the God-fearing will find themselves in the midst of gardens and springs.
M. Sarwar The pious ones will live amidst gardens and springs,

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem They will receive their Lord’s gifts because of the good they did before:
Yusuf Ali Taking joy in the things which their Lord gives them, because, before then, they lived a good life.
W. Khan They shall receive what their Lord will bestow on them. They have done good works in the past,
M. Sarwar receiving their reward from their Lord. They had been righteous people before the Day of Judgment.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem sleeping only little at night,
Yusuf Ali They were in the habit of sleeping but little by night,
W. Khan sleeping little in the night-time,
M. Sarwar They slept very little during the night

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem praying at dawn for God’s forgiveness,
Yusuf Ali And in the hour of early dawn, they (were found) praying for Forgiveness;
W. Khan praying at dawn for God’s pardon,
M. Sarwar and asked for forgiveness in the early morning.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem giving a rightful share of their wealth to the beggar and the deprived.
Yusuf Ali And in their wealth and possessions (was remembered) the right of the (needy,) him who asked, and him who (for some reason) was prevented (from asking).
W. Khan and sharing their possessions with the beggars and the deprived.
M. Sarwar They assigned a share of their property for the needy and the destitute.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem On earth there are signs for those with sure faith––
Yusuf Ali On the earth are signs for those of assured Faith,
W. Khan On the earth, and in yourselves,
M. Sarwar In the earth there is evidence (of the Truth) for those who have strong faith.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem and in yourselves too, do you not see?––
Yusuf Ali As also in your own selves: Will ye not then see?
W. Khan there are signs for firm believers. Do you not see then?
M. Sarwar There is also evidence of the Truth within your own selves. Will you then not see?

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem in the sky is your sustenance and all that you are promised.
Yusuf Ali And in heaven is your Sustenance, as (also) that which ye are promised.
W. Khan In heaven is your sustenance, and also that which you are promised.
M. Sarwar In the heavens there is your sustenance and that which you were promised (Paradise).

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem By the Lord of the heavens and earth! All this is as real as your speaking.
Yusuf Ali Then, by the Lord of heaven and earth, this is the very Truth, as much as the fact that ye can speak intelligently to each other.
W. Khan By the Lord of the heaven and the earth, it is certainly the truth. It is as true as your ability to speak.
M. Sarwar This, by the Lord of the heavens and the earth is as certain as your ability to speak.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem [Muhammad], have you heard the story of the honoured guests of Abraham?
Yusuf Ali Has the story reached thee, of the honoured guests of Abraham?
W. Khan Have you heard the story of Abraham’s honoured guests?
M. Sarwar Have you heard the story of the honorable guests of Abraham?

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem They went in to see him and said, ‘Peace.’ ‘Peace,’ he said, [adding to himself] ‘These people are strangers.’
Yusuf Ali Behold, they entered his presence, and said: "Peace!" He said, "Peace!" (and thought, "These seem) unusual people."
W. Khan When they came to him they said, ‘Peace!’ He answered, ‘Peace!’ [saying to himself]. ‘They are strangers.’
M. Sarwar When they came to him saying, "Peace be with you," he replied to their greeting in the same manner and said to himself, "These are a strange people".

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem He turned quickly to his household, brought out a fat calf,
Yusuf Ali Then he turned quickly to his household, brought out a fatted calf,
W. Khan Then he turned quickly to his household, and brought a fatted calf,
M. Sarwar He went quietly to his wife and returned to his guests with a fat, roasted calf.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem and placed it before them. ‘Will you not eat?’ he said,
Yusuf Ali And placed it before them.. he said, "Will ye not eat?"
W. Khan and placed it before them. ‘Will you not eat?’ he said,
M. Sarwar He placed it before them. Then he said, "Why are you not eating?"

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem beginning to be afraid of them, but they said, ‘Do not be afraid.’ They gave him good news of a son who would be gifted with knowledge.
Yusuf Ali (When they did not eat), He conceived a fear of them. They said, "Fear not," and they gave him glad tidings of a son endowed with knowledge.
W. Khan beginning to be afraid of them. But they said, ‘Don’t be afraid’; and they gave him the good news of a son who would be endowed with knowledge.
M. Sarwar He began to feel afraid. They said, "Do not be afraid," and then gave him the glad news of the birth of a knowledgeable son.

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem His wife then entered with a loud cry, struck her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman?’
Yusuf Ali But his wife came forward (laughing) aloud: she smote her forehead and said: "A barren old woman!"
W. Khan Then his wife came forward, crying and beating her brow. She said, ‘I am surely a barren, old woman.’
M. Sarwar His wife came forward, crying and beating her face, saying, "I am an old barren woman!"

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem but they said, ‘It will be so. This is what your Lord said, and He is the Wise, the All Knowing.’
Yusuf Ali They said, "Even so has thy Lord spoken: and He is full of Wisdom and Knowledge."
W. Khan ‘Such is the will of your Lord,’ they replied. ‘He is the Wise, the All Knowing.’
M. Sarwar They said, "This is true but your Lord has said, (that you will have a son); He is All-wise and All-knowing".

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Abraham said, ‘What is your errand, messengers?’
Yusuf Ali (Abraham) said: "And what, O ye Messengers, is your errand (now)?"
W. Khan Abraham asked, ‘What is your errand, O messengers?’
M. Sarwar Abraham asked, "Messengers, what is your task?"

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘We are sent to a people lost in sin,
Yusuf Ali They said, "We have been sent to a people (deep) in sin;-
W. Khan They replied, ‘We have been sent to a sinful people,
M. Sarwar They replied, "We have been sent to a sinful people

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem to bring down rocks of clay,
Yusuf Ali "To bring on, on them, (a shower of) stones of clay (brimstone),
W. Khan so that we may bring down upon them a shower of stones of clay,
M. Sarwar to bring down upon them showers of marked lumps of clayy.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem marked by your Lord for those who exceed all bounds.’
Yusuf Ali "Marked as from thy Lord for those who trespass beyond bounds."
W. Khan which are marked by your Lord for the punishment of those guilty of excesses.’
M. Sarwar They are transgressors in the presence of your Lord".

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem We brought out such believers as were there-
Yusuf Ali Then We evacuated those of the Believers who were there,
W. Khan We saved all the faithful in the town.
M. Sarwar We saved the believers among them,

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem We found only one household devoted to God-
Yusuf Ali But We found not there any just (Muslim) persons except in one house:
W. Khan We found in it only one household of true believers—
M. Sarwar but We found only one Muslim house.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem and left the town to be a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
Yusuf Ali And We left there a Sign for such as fear the Grievous Penalty.
W. Khan and We left therein a sign for those who fear a painful punishment.
M. Sarwar We left therein evidence for those who fear the painful torment.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem There is another sign in Moses: We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
Yusuf Ali And in Moses (was another Sign): Behold, We sent him to Pharaoh, with authority manifest.
W. Khan There is another sign in Moses: We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
M. Sarwar There is also evidence (of the Truth) in the story of Moses when We sent him to the Pharaoh with clear authority.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem Pharaoh turned away with his supporters, saying, ‘This is a sorcerer, or maybe a madman,’
Yusuf Ali But (Pharaoh) turned back with his Chiefs, and said, "A sorcerer, or one possessed!"
W. Khan But he turned his back, he and his courtiers, and said, ‘This is a sorcerer or a madman.’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh and his forces turned away from him, saying, "He is either a magician or an insane person".

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem so We seized him and his forces and threw them into the sea: he was to blame.
Yusuf Ali So We took him and his forces, and threw them into the sea; and his was the blame.
W. Khan Then We seized him and his army and cast them all into the sea: he himself [Pharaoh] was to blame.
M. Sarwar We seized him and his army and threw them into the sea. He himself was to be blamed.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem There is another sign in the Ad: We sent the life-destroying wind against them
Yusuf Ali And in the 'Ad (people) (was another Sign): Behold, We sent against them the devastating Wind:
W. Khan There is another sign in the [tribe of] ‘Ad, when We sent against them a life-destroying wind
M. Sarwar There is also evidence of the Truth in the story of Ad whom We struck with a violent wind

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem and it reduced everything it came up against to shreds.
Yusuf Ali It left nothing whatever that it came up against, but reduced it to ruin and rottenness.
W. Khan and it destroyed everything over which it passed and reduced it to dust.
M. Sarwar which turned everything it approached into dust.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem And also in the Thamud: it was said to them, ‘Make the most of your lives for a while,’
Yusuf Ali And in the Thamud (was another Sign): Behold, they were told, "Enjoy (your brief day) for a little while!"
W. Khan In the Thamud [there was another sign], when they were told, ‘Make the most of your lives for a while.’
M. Sarwar There is also evidence (of the Truth) in the story of the Thamud, who were told to enjoy themselves for an appointed time.

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem but they rebelled against their Lord’s command, so the blast took them. They looked on helplessly:
Yusuf Ali But they insolently defied the Command of their Lord: So the stunning noise (of an earthquake) seized them, even while they were looking on.
W. Khan But they rebelled against the command of their Lord. So the thunderbolt overtook them while they looked on:
M. Sarwar They transgressed against the command of their Lord. So a blast of sound struck them and they were unable to do anything but stare.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem they could not even remain standing, let alone defend themselves.
Yusuf Ali Then they could not even stand (on their feet), nor could they help themselves.
W. Khan they could not stand up again, nor could they defend themselves.
M. Sarwar They were unable to stand up, nor were they helped.

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem Before that We destroyed the people of Noah. They were a truly sinful people!
Yusuf Ali So were the People of Noah before them for they wickedly transgressed.
W. Khan [We destroyed] the people of Noah before them. They were certainly a sinful people.
M. Sarwar The people of Noah who lived before them were also evil doing people.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem We built the heavens with Our power and made them vast,
Yusuf Ali With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of pace.
W. Khan We built the universe with Our might, giving it its vast expanse.
M. Sarwar We have made the heavens with Our own hands and We expanded it.

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem We spread out the earth- how well We smoothed it out!-
Yusuf Ali And We have spread out the (spacious) earth: How excellently We do spread out!
W. Khan We have spread out the earth—how well We have spread it out—
M. Sarwar We have spread out the earth and how brilliantly it is spread!

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem and We created pairs of all things so that you [people] might take note.
Yusuf Ali And of every thing We have created pairs: That ye may receive instruction.
W. Khan and We created pairs of all things so that you might reflect.
M. Sarwar We have created everything in pairs so that perhaps you may take heed.

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem [So, say to them, Prophet], ‘Quickly, turn to God- I am sent by Him to give you clear warning-
Yusuf Ali Hasten ye then (at once) to Allah: I am from Him a Warner to you, clear and open!
W. Khan Therefore hasten to God; truly, I am sent by Him to give you clear warning.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them,"Seek refuge in God. I have been sent from Him to plainly warn you.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem and do not set up any other god alongside Him. I am sent by Him to give you clear warning!’
Yusuf Ali And make not another an object of worship with Allah: I am from Him a Warner to you, clear and open!
W. Khan Do not set up another god, along with God. I come from Him to warn you plainly.
M. Sarwar Do not choose other gods besides Him. I have been sent from Him to plainly warn you".

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem Every previous people to whom a messenger was sent also said, ‘A sor-cerer, or maybe a madman!’
Yusuf Ali Similarly, no messenger came to the Peoples before them, but they said (of him) in like manner, "A sorcerer, or one possessed"!
W. Khan Likewise, there came no messenger to those before them, but they said, ‘He is a sorcerer or a madman.’
M. Sarwar In the same way no Messenger came to those who lived before them without his people calling him a magician or an insane person.

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem Did they tell one another to do this? No! They are a people who exceed all bounds,
Yusuf Ali Is this the legacy they have transmitted, one to another? Nay, they are themselves a people transgressing beyond bounds!
W. Khan Have they handed this down to one another? They are certainly a people who exceed all bounds,
M. Sarwar Have they inherited such dealings with the Prophets from their predecessors or are they a rebellious people?

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem so ignore them [Prophet]- you are not to blame-
Yusuf Ali So turn away from them: not thine is the blame.
W. Khan so ignore them— you are not to blame—
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), leave them alone and you will not be blamed.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem and go on reminding [people], it is good for those who believe to be reminded.
Yusuf Ali But teach (thy Message) for teaching benefits the Believers.
W. Khan but keep on exhorting them, for exhortation benefits the believers.
M. Sarwar Keep on reminding them. This benefits the believers.

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem I created jinn and mankind only to worship Me:
Yusuf Ali I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me.
W. Khan I created the jinn and mankind only so that they might worship Me:
M. Sarwar We have created jinn and human beings only that they might worship Me.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me-
Yusuf Ali No Sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed Me.
W. Khan I seek no sustenance from them, nor do I want them to feed Me—
M. Sarwar I do not expect to receive any sustenance from them or that they should feed Me.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem God is the Provider, the Lord of Power, the Ever Mighty.
Yusuf Ali For Allah is He Who gives (all) Sustenance,- Lord of Power,- Steadfast (for ever).
W. Khan it is God who is the great Sustainer, the Mighty One, the Invincible.
M. Sarwar It is God Who is the Sustainer and the Lord of invincible strength.

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem The evildoers, like their predecessors, will have a share of punishment- they need not ask Me to hasten it-
Yusuf Ali For the Wrong-doers, their portion is like unto the portion of their fellows (of earlier generations): then let them not ask Me to hasten (that portion)!
W. Khan The wrongdoers will meet the same fate as their predecessors— let them not ask Me to hasten on [the punishment]—
M. Sarwar The unjust will bear a burden like that of their unjust predecessors. Let them not make Me bring immediate punishment upon them.

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem and woe betide those who deny the truth on the Day they have been promised.
Yusuf Ali Woe, then, to the Unbelievers, on account of that Day of theirs which they have been promised!
W. Khan woe, then, to those who are bent on denying the truth, when the Day arrives which they have been promised.
M. Sarwar Woe to the disbelievers when the day with which they have been threatened comes!
