Chapter 55: al-Raḥmān — The Most Clement

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem It is the Lord of Mercy
Yusuf Ali (Allah) Most Gracious!
W. Khan The Merciful
M. Sarwar The Beneficent (God)

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem who taught the Quran.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has taught the Qur'an.
W. Khan who taught the Quran—
M. Sarwar has taught the Quran to (Muhammad).

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem He created man
Yusuf Ali He has created man:
W. Khan He created man
M. Sarwar He created the human being

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem and taught him to communicate.
Yusuf Ali He has taught him speech (and intelligence).
W. Khan and He taught him speech.
M. Sarwar and has taught him intelligible speech.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem The sun and the moon follow their calculated courses;
Yusuf Ali The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;
W. Khan The sun and the moon move according to a fixed reckoning;
M. Sarwar The sun and moon rotate in a predestined orbit.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem the plants and the trees submit to His designs;
Yusuf Ali And the herbs and the trees - both (alike) prostrate in adoration.
W. Khan the stars and the trees bend in prostration.
M. Sarwar The plants and trees prostrate before Him.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem He has raised up the sky. He has set the balance
Yusuf Ali And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the Balance (of Justice),
W. Khan He raised the heavens and set up the measure,
M. Sarwar He raised the heavens and set up everything in balance,

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem so that you may not exceed in the balance:
Yusuf Ali In order that ye may not transgress (due) balance.
W. Khan so that you should not transgress the measure.
M. Sarwar so that you would maintain justice.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem weigh with justice and do not fall short in the balance.
Yusuf Ali So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.
W. Khan Always measure with justice and do not give short measure.
M. Sarwar Therefore, maintain just measure and do not transgress against the Balance.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem He set down the Earth for His creatures,
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures:
W. Khan He has laid out the earth for His creatures.
M. Sarwar He spread out the earth for the people.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem with its fruits, its palm trees with sheathed clusters,
Yusuf Ali Therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates);
W. Khan On it are fruits and palm-trees with sheathed clusters [of dates],
M. Sarwar There exists all kinds of fruits, palm-trees with sheathed blossoms,

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem its husked grain, its fragrant plants.
Yusuf Ali Also corn, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-smelling plants.
W. Khan and grains with their husk and fragrant plants.
M. Sarwar grain with its husk and aromatic herbs.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you deny?

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem He created mankind out of dried clay, like pottery,
Yusuf Ali He created man from sounding clay like unto pottery,
W. Khan He has created man, from dry ringing clay, like the potter’s,
M. Sarwar He created the human being from clay like that used for pottery

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem the jinn out of smokeless fire.
Yusuf Ali And He created Jinns from fire free of smoke:
W. Khan and He created the jinns from a flame of fire.
M. Sarwar and jinn from the many colored flames of fire.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you deny?

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem He is Lord of the two risings and Lord of the two settings.
Yusuf Ali (He is) Lord of the two Easts and Lord of the two Wests:
W. Khan He is the Lord of the two easts and the Lord of the two wests.
M. Sarwar He is the Lord of the East and West through all seasons.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem He released the two bodies of [fresh and salt] water. They meet,
Yusuf Ali He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together:
W. Khan He has set the two oceans in motion, converging together.
M. Sarwar He has made the two oceans meet each other,

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem yet there is a barrier between them they do not cross.
Yusuf Ali Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress:
W. Khan Between them is a barrier, which they do not overrun.
M. Sarwar but has created a barrier between them so that they will not merge totally.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem Pearls come forth from them: large ones, and small, brilliant ones.
Yusuf Ali Out of them come Pearls and Coral:
W. Khan Pearls and corals come forth from both of them.
M. Sarwar From the two oceans comes pearls and coral.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which, of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem His are the moving ships that float, high as mountains, on the sea.
Yusuf Ali And His are the Ships sailing smoothly through the seas, lofty as mountains:
W. Khan His are the lofty ships, that rear aloft on the sea like mountains.
M. Sarwar By His command, the ships with raised masts sail on the sea like mountains.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Everyone on earth perishes;
Yusuf Ali All that is on earth will perish:
W. Khan All that is on the earth is doomed to perish,
M. Sarwar Everyone on earth is destined to die.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem all that remains is the Face of your Lord, full of majesty, bestowing honour.
Yusuf Ali But will abide (for ever) the Face of thy Lord,- full of Majesty, Bounty and Honour.
W. Khan while your Lord’s own Self will remain full of majesty and glory.
M. Sarwar Only the Supreme Essence of your Glorious and Gracious Lord will remain forever.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 29

Sahih Intl Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is bringing about a matter.
Abdel Haleem Everyone in heaven and earth entreats Him; every day He is at work.
Yusuf Ali Of Him seeks (its need) every creature in the heavens and on earth: every day in (new) Splendour doth He (shine)!
W. Khan Everyone in the heavens and on the earth entreats Him. Every day He manifests Himself in a new state.
Y. Emerick Every creature in the heavens and the earth gets what it needs from Him, and He’s active every day.
M. Sarwar Everyone in the heavens and the earth depends on Him. His task in preserving His creation is continuous.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem We shall attend to you two huge armies [of jinn and mankind].
Yusuf Ali Soon shall We settle your affairs, O both ye worlds!
W. Khan Soon We shall attend to you—two big groups [of jinn and mankind].
M. Sarwar Jinn and mankind, We shall certainly settle your accounts.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem Jinn and mankind, if you can pass beyond the regions of heaven and earth, then do so: you will not pass without Our authority.
Yusuf Ali O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass!
W. Khan O company of jinn and men! If you have the power to go beyond the realms of the heavens and the earth, pass beyond them: you cannot pass out but with [Our] authority.
M. Sarwar Jinn and mankind, if you can penetrate the diameters of the heavens and the earth, do so, but you cannot do so without power and authority.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem A flash of fire and smoke will be released upon you and no one will come to your aid.
Yusuf Ali On you will be sent (O ye evil ones twain!) a flame of fire (to burn) and a smoke (to choke): no defence will ye have:
W. Khan Flames of fire and molten brass shall be sent against both of you, and you will not be able to defend yourselves.[42]
M. Sarwar Flames of fire and molten brass will be released against you and you will not be able to protect yourselves.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem When the sky is torn apart and turns crimson, like red hide.
Yusuf Ali When the sky is rent asunder, and it becomes red like ointment:
W. Khan When the sky is rent asunder, and becomes red like red leather,
M. Sarwar (On the Day of Judgment) when the heavens are rent asunder they will have a flowery color and flow like oil.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem On that Day neither mankind nor jinn will be asked about their sins.
Yusuf Ali On that Day no question will be asked of man or Jinn as to his sin.
W. Khan For, on that Day, neither man nor jinn will be questioned about his sins.
M. Sarwar On that day there will be no need to ask mankind or jinn about his sin

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem The guilty will be known by their mark and will be seized by their foreheads and their feet.
Yusuf Ali (For) the sinners will be known by their marks: and they will be seized by their forelocks and their feet.
W. Khan The guilty shall be recognized by their marks so they shall be seized by their forelocks and their feet.
M. Sarwar The guilty ones will be recognized by their faces and will be seized by their forelocks and feet.

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord do you then deny?

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem This is the Hell the guilty deny,
Yusuf Ali This is the Hell which the Sinners deny:
W. Khan This is the Hell which the guilty called a lie.
M. Sarwar (The guilty ones will be told), "This is hell which the sinful ones denied".

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem but they will go round between its flames and scalding water.
Yusuf Ali In its midst and in the midst of boiling hot water will they wander round!
W. Khan They will go round between its flames and boiling water.
M. Sarwar They will run around in blazing fire and boiling water.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem For those who fear [the time when they will] stand before their Lord there are two gardens.
Yusuf Ali But for such as fear the time when they will stand before (the Judgment Seat of) their Lord, there will be two Gardens-
W. Khan There are two gardens for one who fears standing before his Lord.
M. Sarwar Those who fear their Lord will have two gardens

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem With shading branches.
Yusuf Ali Containing all kinds (of trees and delights);-
W. Khan [There will be two gardens with] spreading branches.
M. Sarwar full of various trees.

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem With a pair of flowing springs.
Yusuf Ali In them (each) will be two Springs flowing (free);
W. Khan In both of them, there are two springs flowing.
M. Sarwar In the two gardens there will be two flowing springs.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors would you then deny?

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem With every kind of fruit in pairs.
Yusuf Ali In them will be Fruits of every kind, two and two.
W. Khan In both of them, there will be two kinds of every fruit.
M. Sarwar In them there are pairs of each kind of fruit.

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem They will sit on couches upholstered with brocade, the fruit of both gardens within easy reach.
Yusuf Ali They will recline on Carpets, whose inner linings will be of rich brocade: the Fruit of the Gardens will be near (and easy of reach).
W. Khan They will recline upon carpets lined with rich brocade; and the fruits of both these gardens will be within easy reach.
M. Sarwar (The dwellers of Paradise) will recline on couches lined with silk brocade and it will be easy to reach the ripe fruits from the two gardens.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem There will be maidens restraining their glances, untouched beforehand by man or jinn.
Yusuf Ali In them will be (Maidens), chaste, restraining their glances, whom no man or Jinn before them has touched;-
W. Khan Therein are maidens of modest gaze, whom neither a man nor a jinn had ever touched before them.
M. Sarwar There will be bashful maidens untouched by mankind or jinn before.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar jinn and mankindiwhich of the favors of your Lord would you then deny

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem Like rubies and brilliant pearls.
Yusuf Ali Like unto Rubies and coral.
W. Khan [There will be] maidens as fair as corals and rubies.
M. Sarwar who are as beautiful as rubies and pearls.

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem Shall the reward of good be anything but good?
Yusuf Ali Is there any Reward for Good - other than Good?
W. Khan The reward of goodness shall be nothing but goodness.
M. Sarwar Can any thing else be a response to a favor but a favor?

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem There are two other gardens below these two.
Yusuf Ali And besides these two, there are two other Gardens,-
W. Khan Besides those two there shall be two other gardens.
M. Sarwar Besides this, there will be two other gardens.

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar - jinn and mankind - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem Both of deepest green.
Yusuf Ali Dark-green in colour (from plentiful watering).
W. Khan Both [gardens] of the darkest green.
M. Sarwar - dark green in color.

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem With a pair of gushing springs.
Yusuf Ali In them (each) will be two Springs pouring forth water in continuous abundance:
W. Khan In both of them live springs gush forth.
M. Sarwar In these there will also be two springs gushing forth.

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem With fruits- date palms and pomegranate trees.
Yusuf Ali In them will be Fruits, and dates and pomegranates:
W. Khan In both of them there will be fruit trees and date-palms and pomegranates.
M. Sarwar In both gardens there will be fruits, palm-trees, and pomegranates

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem There are good-natured, beautiful maidens.
Yusuf Ali In them will be fair (Companions), good, beautiful;-
W. Khan Therein will be maidens chaste and beautiful.
M. Sarwar There will be well-disciplined, beautiful maidens.

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar - jinn and mankind - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem Dark-eyed, sheltered in pavilions.
Yusuf Ali Companions restrained (as to their glances), in (goodly) pavilions;-
W. Khan [There the blessed will live with their] pure companions sheltered in pavilions.
M. Sarwar - with big, black and white beautiful eyes, dwelling in tents.

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar - jinn and mankind - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem Untouched beforehand by man or jinn.
Yusuf Ali Whom no man or Jinn before them has touched;-
W. Khan Whom neither a man or jinn had ever touched before them.
M. Sarwar - untouched by jinn or mankind before.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem They will all sit on green cushions and fine carpets.
Yusuf Ali Reclining on green Cushions and rich Carpets of beauty.
W. Khan [They will live in such a paradise] reclining upon green cushions and the finest carpets.
M. Sarwar They will be reclining on plain green and beautifully printed cushions

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
Yusuf Ali Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
W. Khan Which of your Lord’s wonders would you deny?
M. Sarwar (Jinn and mankind) - which of the favors of your Lord would you then deny?

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem Blessed is the name of your Lord, full of majesty, bestowing honour.
Yusuf Ali Blessed be the name of thy Lord, full of Majesty, Bounty and Honour.
W. Khan Blessed be your Lord’s name, full of glory and majesty!
M. Sarwar Blessed is the Name of your Lord, the Lord of Glory and Grace.
