The Qurʾān

Chapter 56

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem When that which is coming arrives,
Yusuf Ali When the Event inevitable cometh to pass,
W. Khan When the inevitable event takes place,
M. Sarwar When the inevitable event comes,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem no one will be able to deny it has come,
Yusuf Ali Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.
W. Khan and there can be no denying its happening,
M. Sarwar no soul will deny its coming.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem bringing low and raising high.
Yusuf Ali (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt;
W. Khan some shall be abased and others exalted.
M. Sarwar It will abase some and exalt others.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem When the earth is shaken violently
Yusuf Ali When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,
W. Khan When the earth is shaken violently,
M. Sarwar When the earth is violently shaken

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem and the mountains are ground to powder
Yusuf Ali And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,
W. Khan and the mountains are totally shattered and crumble to pieces
M. Sarwar and the mountains crumbled,

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem and turn to scattered dust,
Yusuf Ali Becoming dust scattered abroad,
W. Khan and become like scattered dust particles,
M. Sarwar they will become like dust scattered around.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem then you will be sorted into three classes.
Yusuf Ali And ye shall be sorted out into three classes.
W. Khan [on that Day] you shall be divided into three groups.[43]
M. Sarwar On that day, you (mankind) will be divided into three groups:

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem Those on the Right––what people they are!
Yusuf Ali Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand?
W. Khan Those on the Right—how blessed are those on the Right!
M. Sarwar The people of the right hand - those whose books of records will be placed in their right hands. How happy they will be!

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem Those on the Left––what people they are!
Yusuf Ali And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?
W. Khan Those on the Left—how unlucky are those on the Left!
M. Sarwar The people of the left hand - those whose books of records will be placed in their left hands. How miserable they will be!

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem And those in front––ahead indeed!
Yusuf Ali And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).
W. Khan The third to the fore shall be the foremost.
M. Sarwar The foremost ones (in faith and virtue) - the foremost ones in receiving their reward.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem For these will be the ones brought nearest to God
Yusuf Ali These will be those Nearest to Allah:
W. Khan They shall be the nearest to God.
M. Sarwar (The foremost ones) will be the nearest ones to God

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem in Gardens of Bliss:
Yusuf Ali In Gardens of Bliss:
W. Khan They will dwell in the Gardens of Bliss:
M. Sarwar in the beautiful Paradise.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem many from the past
Yusuf Ali A number of people from those of old,
W. Khan a large group of the early believers,
M. Sarwar Many of them will be from the ancient people

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem and a few from later generations.
Yusuf Ali And a few from those of later times.
W. Khan and a lesser number from the later generations.
M. Sarwar and only a few of them from the later generations.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem On couches of well-woven cloth
Yusuf Ali (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones),
W. Khan Seated on couches wrought in gold and encrusted with precious stones,
M. Sarwar They will recline on jewelled couches

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem they will sit facing each other;
Yusuf Ali Reclining on them, facing each other.
W. Khan reclining on them facing each other;
M. Sarwar facing one another.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem everlasting youths will go round among them
Yusuf Ali Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness),
W. Khan they will be waited on by ageless youths
M. Sarwar Immortal youths will serve them

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem with glasses, flagons, and cups of a pure drink
Yusuf Ali With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains:
W. Khan carrying goblets and ewers and cups filled with the purest wine,
M. Sarwar with goblets, jugs and cups of crystal clear wine

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem that causes no headache or intoxication;
Yusuf Ali No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:
W. Khan neither causing headaches, nor intoxication;
M. Sarwar which will not cause them any intoxication or illness.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem [there will be] any fruit they choose;
Yusuf Ali And with fruits, any that they may select:
W. Khan along with fruits of their choice;
M. Sarwar Also, they will be served with the fruits of their choice

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem the meat of any bird they like;
Yusuf Ali And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire.
W. Khan and the meat of any bird that they may desire;
M. Sarwar and the flesh of birds, as they desire.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem and beautiful companions
Yusuf Ali And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,-
W. Khan and fair maidens with large, lustrous eyes
M. Sarwar They will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes,

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem like hidden pearls:
Yusuf Ali Like unto Pearls well-guarded.
W. Khan like the pearls in their shells:
M. Sarwar like pearls preserved in their shells,

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem a reward for what they used to do.
Yusuf Ali A Reward for the deeds of their past (life).
W. Khan shall be their recompense for their deeds.
M. Sarwar as reward for their deeds.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem They will hear no idle or sinful talk there,
Yusuf Ali Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,-
W. Khan They will not hear therein any vain or sinful talk,
M. Sarwar They will not hear any unnecessary or sinful talk

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem only clean and wholesome speech.
Yusuf Ali Only the saying, "Peace! Peace".
W. Khan only the words of peace and tranquillity.
M. Sarwar except each other's greetings of, "Peace be with you".

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem Those on the Right, what people they are!
Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Right Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?
W. Khan Those on the Right, how fortunate are those on the Right!
M. Sarwar As for the people of the right hand, how happy they will be!

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem They will dwell amid thornless lote trees
Yusuf Ali (They will be) among Lote-trees without thorns,
W. Khan They shall recline on high amidst lote trees without thorns
M. Sarwar They will live amid the thornless lot trees

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem and clustered acacia
Yusuf Ali Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another,-
W. Khan and clustered bananas,
M. Sarwar and banana trees,

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem with spreading shade,
Yusuf Ali In shade long-extended,
W. Khan and spreading shade
M. Sarwar with fruits piled up one on the other,

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem constantly flowing water,
Yusuf Ali By water flowing constantly,
W. Khan and flowing water,
M. Sarwar and amid the extended shade

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem abundant fruits,
Yusuf Ali And fruit in abundance.
W. Khan and fruits in abundance,
M. Sarwar near to flowing water

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem unfailing, unforbidden,
Yusuf Ali Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden,
W. Khan never-ending and unrestricted,
M. Sarwar and abundant fruits,

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem with incomparable companions
Yusuf Ali And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high.
W. Khan on raised couches.
M. Sarwar undiminished and never denied

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem We have specially created––
Yusuf Ali We have created (their Companions) of special creation.
W. Khan We have created maidens perfectly
M. Sarwar and the noble maidens

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem virginal,
Yusuf Ali And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), -
W. Khan and made them virgins,
M. Sarwar that We have created (for the people of the right hand).

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem loving, of matching age––
Yusuf Ali Beloved (by nature), equal in age,-
W. Khan loving companions, matching in age,
M. Sarwar We have made them virgins,

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem for those on the Right,
Yusuf Ali For the Companions of the Right Hand.
W. Khan for those on the Right,
M. Sarwar loving and of equal age.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem many from the past
Yusuf Ali A (goodly) number from those of old,
W. Khan a large group of the earlier people
M. Sarwar These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem and many from later generations.
Yusuf Ali And a (goodly) number from those of later times.
W. Khan and a large group of those of later times.
M. Sarwar and many from the later generations.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem But those on the Left, what people they are!
Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?
W. Khan Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left!
M. Sarwar As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be!

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem They will dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water
Yusuf Ali (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water,
W. Khan They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water,
M. Sarwar They will live amid the scorching,

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem in the shadow of black smoke,
Yusuf Ali And in the shades of Black Smoke:
W. Khan and under the shadow of black smoke,
M. Sarwar scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke,

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem neither cool nor refreshing.
Yusuf Ali Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please:
W. Khan neither cool nor refreshing.
M. Sarwar neither cold nor graceful in shape.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem Before, they overindulged in luxury
Yusuf Ali For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury),
W. Khan They had been affluent before,
M. Sarwar They had lived in luxury before this

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem and persisted in great sin,
Yusuf Ali And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!
W. Khan and they persisted obstinately in awful sin,
M. Sarwar and persisted in heinous sins.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem always saying, ‘What? When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up?
Yusuf Ali And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?-
W. Khan and they used to say, ‘What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again?
M. Sarwar It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones?

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem And our earliest forefathers too?’
Yusuf Ali "(We) and our fathers of old?"
W. Khan And also our forefathers?’
M. Sarwar Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too?

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘The earliest and latest generations
Yusuf Ali Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times,
W. Khan Say, ‘Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem will all be gathered on a predetermined Day
Yusuf Ali "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known.
W. Khan will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day.
M. Sarwar will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day.

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem and you who have gone astray and denied the truth
Yusuf Ali "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!-
W. Khan Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth,
M. Sarwar Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem will eat from the bitter tree of Zaqqum,
Yusuf Ali "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.
W. Khan shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum,
M. Sarwar will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum,

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem filling your bellies with it,
Yusuf Ali "Then will ye fill your insides therewith,
W. Khan and fill your bellies with it,
M. Sarwar filling your bellies, with it

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem and drink scalding water,
Yusuf Ali "And drink Boiling Water on top of it:
W. Khan and shall drink boiling water on top of that.
M. Sarwar and on top of this you will drink boiling water

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem lapping it like thirsty camels.’
Yusuf Ali "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!"
W. Khan You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink.’
M. Sarwar like a thirsty camel".

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement.
Yusuf Ali Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!
W. Khan This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement.
M. Sarwar Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem It was We who created you: will you not believe?
Yusuf Ali It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth?
W. Khan We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth?
M. Sarwar It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth?

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem Consider [the semen] you eject-
Yusuf Ali Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,-
W. Khan Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge—
M. Sarwar Have you seen sperm?

Verse 59

Abdel Haleem do you create it yourselves or are We the Creator?
Yusuf Ali Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators?
W. Khan did you create it or did We?
M. Sarwar Did you create it or was it We who created it?

Verse 60

Abdel Haleem We ordained death to be among you. Nothing could stop Us
Yusuf Ali We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated
W. Khan It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented
M. Sarwar We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us

Verse 61

Abdel Haleem if We intended to change you and recreate you in a way unknown to you.
Yusuf Ali from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not.
W. Khan from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of.
M. Sarwar in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know.

Verse 62

Abdel Haleem You have learned how you were first created: will you not reflect?
Yusuf Ali And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises?
W. Khan You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed?
M. Sarwar You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed?

Verse 63

Abdel Haleem Consider the seeds you sow in the ground-
Yusuf Ali See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?
W. Khan Have you thought about what crops you plant?
M. Sarwar Have you seen what you sow?

Verse 64

Abdel Haleem is it you who make them grow or We?
Yusuf Ali Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause?
W. Khan Is it you who cause them to grow or do We?
M. Sarwar Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow?

Verse 65

Abdel Haleem If We wished, We could turn your harvest into chaff and leave you to wail,
Yusuf Ali Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment,
W. Khan If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting,
M. Sarwar Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament,

Verse 66

Abdel Haleem ‘We are burdened with debt;
Yusuf Ali (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing):
W. Khan ‘We are ruined,
M. Sarwar crying, "We have been left to suffer loss.

Verse 67

Abdel Haleem we are bereft.’
Yusuf Ali "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)"
W. Khan nay, we are deprived [altogether].’
M. Sarwar Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)".

Verse 68

Abdel Haleem Consider the water you drink-
Yusuf Ali See ye the water which ye drink?
W. Khan Have you considered the water that you drink?
M. Sarwar Have you seen the water which you drink?

Verse 69

Abdel Haleem was it you who brought it down from the rain-cloud or We?
Yusuf Ali Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We?
W. Khan Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We?
M. Sarwar Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down?

Verse 70

Abdel Haleem If We wanted, We could make it bitter: will you not be thankful?
Yusuf Ali Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks?
W. Khan If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful?
M. Sarwar Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks?

Verse 71

Abdel Haleem Consider the fire you kindle-
Yusuf Ali See ye the Fire which ye kindle?
W. Khan Have you thought about the fire that you kindle.
M. Sarwar Have you seen the fire which you kindle?

Verse 72

Abdel Haleem is it you who make the wood for it grow or We?
Yusuf Ali Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it?
W. Khan Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We?
M. Sarwar Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it?

Verse 73

Abdel Haleem We made it a reminder, and useful to those who kindle it,
Yusuf Ali We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts.
W. Khan We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers.
M. Sarwar It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people.

Verse 74

Abdel Haleem so [Prophet] glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.
Yusuf Ali Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme!
W. Khan So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One.

Verse 75

Abdel Haleem I swear by the positions of the stars-
Yusuf Ali Furthermore I call to witness the setting of the Stars,-
W. Khan Nay, I swear by the setting of the stars—
M. Sarwar I do not need to swear by the setting of the stars

Verse 76

Abdel Haleem a mighty oath, if you only knew-
Yusuf Ali And that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew,-
W. Khan and, indeed, that is a most mighty oath, if you only knew—
M. Sarwar - which is indeed a great oath if only you knew it -

Verse 77

Abdel Haleem that this is truly a noble Quran,
Yusuf Ali That this is indeed a qur'an Most Honourable,
W. Khan that this is indeed a noble Quran,
M. Sarwar that this is an honorable Quran

Verse 78

Abdel Haleem in a protected Record
Yusuf Ali In Book well-guarded,
W. Khan in a well-guarded preserved Book,
M. Sarwar preserved in a hidden Book which

Verse 79

Abdel Haleem that only the purified can touch,
Yusuf Ali Which none shall touch but those who are clean:
W. Khan which none can touch except the purified.
M. Sarwar no one can touch it except the purified ones.

Verse 80

Abdel Haleem sent down from the Lord of all being.
Yusuf Ali A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
W. Khan It is a revelation sent down from the Lord of the worlds.
M. Sarwar (This Quran) is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 81

Abdel Haleem How can you scorn this statement?
Yusuf Ali Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem?
W. Khan How can you regard this discourse with disdain?
M. Sarwar Would you say that this statement is a lie?

Verse 82

Abdel Haleem And how, in return for the livelihood you are given, can you deny it?
Yusuf Ali And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?
W. Khan Do you make its denial your means of livelihood?
M. Sarwar Would you reject the sustenance that you receive rather than give thanks?

Verse 83

Abdel Haleem When the soul of a dying man comes up to his throat
Yusuf Ali Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat,-
W. Khan Why, then, when the soul of the dying man reaches the throat,
M. Sarwar Why can you not help a soul dying

Verse 84

Abdel Haleem while you gaze on-
Yusuf Ali And ye the while (sit) looking on,-
W. Khan and you are [at that moment] looking on [helplessly]—
M. Sarwar right before your very eyes?

Verse 85

Abdel Haleem We are nearer to him than you, though you do not see Us-
Yusuf Ali But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,-
W. Khan and We are nearer to him than you, although you cannot see Us—
M. Sarwar We are closer to him than you, but you cannot see.

Verse 86

Abdel Haleem why, if you are not to be judged,
Yusuf Ali Then why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,-
W. Khan why, then, if you are not subject to Our command,
M. Sarwar If you are true to your claim that there is no Day of Judgment,

Verse 87

Abdel Haleem do you not restore his soul to him, if what you say is true?
Yusuf Ali Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)?
W. Khan do you not cause the soul to return to him if you are truthful in your claim?
M. Sarwar why can you not bring it (the soul) back (to life)?

Verse 88

Abdel Haleem If that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to God,
Yusuf Ali Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,
W. Khan But if he [the dying person] is one of those brought near to God,
M. Sarwar (If a dying soul) is of those near to God,

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem he will have rest, ease, and a Garden of Bliss;
Yusuf Ali (There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.
W. Khan then for him there shall be comfort and plenty and a Garden of Bliss;
M. Sarwar it will have rest, happiness, and a beautiful Paradise.

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem if he is one of those on the Right,
Yusuf Ali And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand,
W. Khan and if he is of those who are on the Right,
M. Sarwar If it is of the people of the right hand,

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem [he will hear], ‘Peace be on you,’ from his companions on the Right;
Yusuf Ali (For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand.
W. Khan he will be greeted with, ‘Peace be to you,’ by those on the Right.
M. Sarwar it will be with the people of the right hand, living in peace and security.

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem but if he is one of those who denied the truth and went astray,
Yusuf Ali And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong,
W. Khan But if he is one of those who rejected [the truth] and went astray,
M. Sarwar If it is of those who have rejected the Truth and have gone astray,

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem he will be welcomed with scalding water.
Yusuf Ali For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water.
W. Khan he will be welcomed with boiling water.
M. Sarwar its dwelling will be boiling water

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem He will burn in Hell.
Yusuf Ali And burning in Hell-Fire.
W. Khan He will burn in Hell.
M. Sarwar and the heat of hell fire.

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem This is the certain truth:
Yusuf Ali Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.
W. Khan This is indeed the indubitable truth.
M. Sarwar This is the absolute Truth and certainty.

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], glorify the name of your Lord the Supreme.
Yusuf Ali So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.
W. Khan So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.
M. Sarwar So glorify the name of your Lord, the Great One.
