The Qurʾān

Chapter 61: al-Ṣaff — the Ranks

Verse 1

original سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
ALA-LC Sabbaḥa Allāhi mā fī al-samāwāt wa-mā fī al-arḍ(i). Wa-huwa al-ʿazīzu al-ḥakīm.
Abdel Haleem Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies God––He is the Almighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, let it declare the Praises and Glory of Allah: for He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
W. Khan Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies God—He is the Almighty, the Wise.
M. Sarwar All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify God. He is the Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 2

original يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ
ALA-LC Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanu(wa )lima taqūlūna mā lā tafʿalūn
Abdel Haleem You who believe, why do you say things and then do not do them?
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Why say ye that which ye do not?
W. Khan Believers! Why do you say one thing and do another.
M. Sarwar Believers, why do you preach what you do not practice?

Verse 3

original كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ اللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُوا مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ
ALA-LC Kabura maqtan ʿinda Allāhi an taqūlū mā lā tafʿalūn
Abdel Haleem It is most hateful to God that you say things and then do not do them;
Yusuf Ali Grievously odious is it in the sight of Allah that ye say that which ye do not.
W. Khan It is most hateful to God that you do not practise what you preach;
M. Sarwar It is most hateful in the sight of God if you say something and do not practice it.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem God truly loves those who fight in solid lines for His cause, like a well-compacted wall.
Yusuf Ali Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure.
W. Khan surely, God loves those who fight for His cause in ranks, as if they were a solid cemented structure.[45]
M. Sarwar God loves those who fight for His cause in battlefield formations firm as an unbreakable concrete wall.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Moses said to his people, ‘My people, why do you hurt me when you know that I am sent to you by God?’ When they went astray, God left their hearts to stray: God does not guide rebellious people.
Yusuf Ali And remember, Moses said to his people: "O my people! why do ye vex and insult me, though ye know that I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you?" Then when they went wrong, Allah let their hearts go wrong. For Allah guides not those who are rebellious transgressors.
W. Khan Remember when Moses said to his people, ‘O my people, why do you cause me grief when you know that I am God’s Messenger to you?’ When they wavered, God let their hearts waver too. God does not guide transgressors.
M. Sarwar Moses said to his people, "Why do you create difficulties for me when you know that I am God's Messenger to you?" When they deviated (from the right path), God led their hearts astray. God does not guide the evil-doing people.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘Children of Israel, I am sent to you by God, confirming the Torah that came before me and bringing good news of a messenger to follow me whose name will be Ahmad.’ Yet when he came to them with clear signs, they said, ‘This is obviously sorcery.’
Yusuf Ali And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel! I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving Glad Tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad." But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, "this is evident sorcery!"
W. Khan Remember when Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘O Children of Israel, I am sent to you by God, confirming the Torah that came before me and bringing good news of a messenger to follow me, whose name will be Ahmad.’ Yet when he came to them with clear signs, they said, ‘This is merely sorcery.’
M. Sarwar Jesus, son of Mary, said to the Israelites, "I am the Messenger of God sent to you. I confirm the Torah which is in existence and give you the glad news of the coming of a Messenger who will come after me named Ahmad." When this Messenger came to them with all the proofs (to support his truthfulness), they said, "He is simply a magician".

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Who could be more wrong than someone who invents lies against God when called to submit to Him? God does not guide the wrongdoers:
Yusuf Ali Who doth greater wrong than one who invents falsehood against Allah, even as he is being invited to Islam? And Allah guides not those who do wrong.
W. Khan Who could be more wicked than one who invents lies about God when called to submit to Him? God does not guide the wrongdoers:
M. Sarwar Who is more unjust than one who creates falsehood against God when he has already been invited to Islam? God does not guide the unjust people.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem they wish to put His light out with their mouths. But He will perfect His light, even though the disbelievers hate it;
Yusuf Ali Their intention is to extinguish Allah's Light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete (the revelation of) His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).
W. Khan they wish to put His light out with their mouths. But He will perfect His light, much as those who deny the truth may dislike it;
M. Sarwar They want to put out the light of God with their mouths, but God will certainly make His light shine forever - even though the disbelievers may dislike this.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem it is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to show that it is above all [other] religions, even though the idolaters hate it.
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has sent His Messenger with Guidance and the Religion of Truth, that he may proclaim it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it).
W. Khan it is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion, so that He may cause it to prevail over all religions, however much the polytheists may dislike it.
M. Sarwar It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion to stand supreme over all religions, even though the pagans may dislike it.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem You who believe, shall I show you a bargain that will save you from painful torment?
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from a grievous Penalty?-
W. Khan Believers! Shall I guide you to a profitable course that will save you from a painful punishment?
M. Sarwar Believers, shall I show you a bargain which will save you from the painful torment?

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem Have faith in God and His Messenger and struggle for His cause with your possessions and your persons––that is better for you, if only you knew-
Yusuf Ali That ye believe in Allah and His Messenger, and that ye strive (your utmost) in the Cause of Allah, with your property and your persons: That will be best for you, if ye but knew!
W. Khan You should believe in God and His Messenger, and strive for God’s cause with your possessions and your lives. That will be better for you, if you only knew—
M. Sarwar Have faith in God and His Messenger and strive hard for His cause with your wealth and in persons. This is better for you if only you knew it.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem and He will forgive your sins, admit you into Gardens graced with flowing streams, into pleasant dwellings in the Gardens of Eternity. That is the supreme triumph.
Yusuf Ali He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, and to beautiful mansions in Gardens of Eternity: that is indeed the Supreme Achievement.
W. Khan and He will forgive you your sins and admit you into Gardens with rivers flowing under them. He will lodge you in fine dwellings in the Gardens of Eternity; that is indeed the supreme achievement.
M. Sarwar God will forgive your sins and admit you into Paradise wherein streams flow, and you live in the lofty mansions of the garden of Eden. This is indeed the greatest triumph.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem And He will give you something else that will really please you: His help and an imminent breakthrough. [Prophet], give the faithful the good news.
Yusuf Ali And another (favour will He bestow,) which ye do love,- help from Allah and a speedy victory. So give the Glad Tidings to the Believers.
W. Khan He will give you another blessing which you desire: help from God and imminent victory. Give good tidings [O Muhammad] to believers!
M. Sarwar (Besides forgiveness) you will receive other favors which you will love: help from God and an immediate victory (Muhammad), give such glad news to the believers.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem You who believe, be God’s helpers. As Jesus, son of Mary, said to the disciples, ‘Who will come with me to help God?’ The disciples said, ‘We shall be God’s helpers.’ Some of the Children of Israel believed and some disbelieved: We supported the believers against their enemy and they were the ones who came out on top.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Be ye helpers of Allah: As said Jesus the son of Mary to the Disciples, "Who will be my helpers to (the work of) Allah?" Said the disciples, "We are Allah's helpers!" then a portion of the Children of Israel believed, and a portion disbelieved: But We gave power to those who believed, against their enemies, and they became the ones that prevailed.
W. Khan Believers, be God’s helpers, as Jesus, son of Mary, said to the disciples, ‘Who will be my helpers in the cause of God?’ The disciples said, ‘We shall be God’s helpers.’ Some of the Children of Israel believed in him and some denied the truth; We supported the believers against their enemies and they triumphed over them.
M. Sarwar Believers, be the helpers of God just as when Jesus, the son of Mary, asked the disciples, "Who will be my helpers for the cause of God?" and the disciples replied, "We are the helpers of God." A group of the Israelites believed in him and others rejected him. We helped the believers against their enemies and they became victorious.
