The Qurʾān

Chapter 62

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies God, the Controller, the Holy One, the Almighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare the Praises and Glory of Allah,- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
W. Khan Whatever is in the heavens and on the earth glorifies God, the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One, the Mighty, the Wise.
M. Sarwar All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify God, the King, the Holy, the Majestic and the All-wise.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem It is He who raised a mes-senger, among the people who had no Scripture, to recite His revelations to them, to make them grow spiritually and teach them the Scripture and wisdom––before that they were clearly astray––
Yusuf Ali It is He Who has sent amongst the Unlettered a messenger from among themselves, to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and to instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom,- although they had been, before, in manifest error;-
W. Khan It is He who has raised among the unlettered people a messenger from among themselves who recites His revelations to them, and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom, for they had formerly been clearly misguided—
M. Sarwar It is He who has sent to the illiterate a Messenger from among their own people to recite to them His revelations and purify them. He will teach the Book to them

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem to them and others yet to join them. He is the Almighty, the Wise:
Yusuf Ali As well as (to confer all these benefits upon) others of them, who have not already joined them: And He is exalted in Might, Wise.
W. Khan and to others also, from among them, who have not yet joined them. He is the Mighty, the Wise One.
M. Sarwar and others who have not yet joined, and He will give them wisdom. Before this they had been in plain error. God is Majestic and All-wise.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem such is God’s favour that He grants it to whoever He will; God’s favour is immense.
Yusuf Ali Such is the Bounty of Allah, which He bestows on whom He will: and Allah is the Lord of the highest bounty.
W. Khan That is God’s grace; He bestows it on whom He pleases; for God is limitless in His grace.
M. Sarwar Such is the favor of God which He grants to whomever He wants. God's favor is great.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Those who have been charged to obey the Torah, but do not do so, are like asses carrying books: how base such people are who disobey God’s revelations! God does not guide people who do wrong.
Yusuf Ali The similitude of those who were charged with the (obligations of the) Mosaic Law, but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is that of a donkey which carries huge tomes (but understands them not). Evil is the similitude of people who falsify the Signs of Allah: and Allah guides not people who do wrong.
W. Khan Those who were charged with bearing the Torah, but did not do so are like an ass carrying a load of books. How unfortunate are those who belie the sign of God. God does not guide the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar Those who were to carry the responsibility of the Torah but ignored, are like donkeys laden with books. How terrible is the example of the people who reject the revelations of God. God does not guide the unjust.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘You who follow the Jewish faith, if you truly claim that out of all people you alone are friends of God, then you should be hoping for death.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O ye that stand on Judaism! If ye think that ye are friends to Allah, to the exclusion of (other) men, then express your desire for Death, if ye are truthful!"
W. Khan Say, ‘You who are Jews, if you claim that you are favoured by God out of all people, then long for death, if you are truthful.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask the Jews, "If you believe that you are the chosen people of God to the exclusion of all other people, wish for death if you are truthful".

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem But because of what they have stored up for themselves with their own hands they would never hope for death––God knows the wrongdoers very well––
Yusuf Ali But never will they express their desire (for Death), because of the (deeds) their hands have sent on before them! and Allah knows well those that do wrong!
W. Khan They will never wish for it, because of what their hands have sent forward. God has full knowledge of evil-doers.
M. Sarwar They will never wish for death because of what they have done! God knows best about the unjust people.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem so say, ‘The death you run away from will come to meet you and you will be returned to the One who knows the unseen as well as the seen: He will tell you everything you have done.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "The Death from which ye flee will truly overtake you: then will ye be sent back to the Knower of things secret and open: and He will tell you (the truth of) the things that ye did!"
W. Khan So say, ‘The death you run away from will certainly meet you, and thereafter you will be brought back to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will declare to you what you have done.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "The death from which you run away will certainly approach you. Then you will be returned to the One who knows the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you have done".

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem Believers! When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hurry towards the reminder of God and leave off your trading––that is better for you, if only you knew––
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew!
W. Khan Believers! When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hasten to the remembrance of God, and leave all worldly commerce: this is for your own good, if you but knew it.
M. Sarwar Believers, on Friday when the call for prayer is made, try to attend prayer (remembering God) and leave off all business. This would be better for you if only you knew it.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem then when the prayer has ended, disperse in the land and seek out God’s bounty. Remember God often so that you may prosper.
Yusuf Ali And when the Prayer is finished, then may ye disperse through the land, and seek of the Bounty of Allah: and celebrate the Praises of Allah often (and without stint): that ye may prosper.
W. Khan When the prayer is ended, disperse in the land and seek to obtain [something] of God’s bounty; and remember God much, so that you may prosper.
M. Sarwar When the prayer ends, disperse through the land and seek the favor of God. Remember Him often so that perhaps you will have everlasting happiness.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem Yet they scatter towards trade or entertainment whenever they observe it, and leave you [Prophet] standing there. Say, ‘God’s gift is better than any entertainment or trade: God is the best provider.’
Yusuf Ali But when they see some bargain or some amusement, they disperse headlong to it, and leave thee standing. Say: "The (blessing) from the Presence of Allah is better than any amusement or bargain! and Allah is the Best to provide (for all needs)."
W. Khan Yet when they see some merchandise or entertainment, they break away to go to it and leave you standing. Say, ‘That which God has in store is far entertainment.’ God is the most better than any merchandise or munificent Giver.
M. Sarwar When they see some merchandise or some sport, they rush towards it and leave you alone standing. Say, "(God's rewards for good deeds) are better than merriment or merchandise; God is the best Sustainer".
