The Qurʾān

Chapter 7: al-Aʿrāf — The Heights

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem Alif Lam Mim Sad
Yusuf Ali Alif, Lam, Mim, Sad.
W. Khan Alif Lam Mim Sad
M. Sarwar Lam. Mim. Sad.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem This Book has been sent down to you [Prophet]––let there be no anxiety in your heart because of it––so that you may use it to give warning and to remind the believers:
Yusuf Ali A Book revealed unto thee,- So let thy heart be oppressed no more by any difficulty on that account,- that with it thou mightest warn (the erring) and teach the Believers).
W. Khan This Book has been sent down to you—let there be no heaviness in your heart about it—so that you may warn by means of it and it is a reminder to the believers.
M. Sarwar A book has been revealed to you, (Muhammad). You should not hesitate to convey its warning and its good advice to the believers.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem ‘Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord; do not follow other masters beside Him. How seldom you take heed!’
Yusuf Ali Follow (O men!) the revelation given unto you from your Lord, and follow not, as friends or protectors, other than Him. Little it is ye remember of admonition.
W. Khan Follow what has been sent down to you by your Lord and do not follow any protector other than Him. How seldom you take heed.
M. Sarwar (People), follow whatever is revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other guardians besides Him. However, you pay very little attention (to Our words)

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem How many towns We have destroyed! Our punishment came to them by night or while they slept in the afternoon:
Yusuf Ali How many towns have We destroyed (for their sins)? Our punishment took them on a sudden by night or while they slept for their afternoon rest.
W. Khan How many towns We have destroyed. Our scourge fell upon them by night or at midday when they were resting:
M. Sarwar How many cities have We destroyed! Our wrath struck their people at night or during their midday siesta.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem their only cry when Our punishment came to them was, ‘How wrong we were!’
Yusuf Ali When (thus) Our punishment took them, no cry did they utter but this: "Indeed we did wrong."
W. Khan and when Our scourge fell upon them, their only cry was, ‘We were indeed wrongdoers!’
M. Sarwar When Our wrath struck them, they could do nothing but confess to their sins.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem We shall certainly question those to whom messengers were sent–– and We shall question the messengers themselves––
Yusuf Ali Then shall we question those to whom Our message was sent and those by whom We sent it.
W. Khan Then shall We question those to whom Our message was sent and those through whom We sent it
M. Sarwar We will certainly question the people and the Messengers sent to them.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem and, with full knowledge, for We were never far from them, We shall tell them what they did.
Yusuf Ali And verily, We shall recount their whole story with knowledge, for We were never absent (at any time or place).
W. Khan with full knowledge, We shall tell them what they did, for We have never been away from them.
M. Sarwar We will tell them with absolute certainty (what they had done) for We had never been absent from them (during their lifetime).

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem On that Day the weighing of deeds will be true and just: those whose good deeds are heavy on the scales will be the ones to prosper,
Yusuf Ali The balance that day will be true (to nicety): those whose scale (of good) will be heavy, will prosper:
W. Khan Truth alone will be of weight that Day. Those whose scales are heavy shall be successful,
M. Sarwar (Everyone's deeds) will certainly be weighed (and evaluated) on the Day of Judgment. Those whose good deeds weigh heavier than their bad deeds will have everlasting happiness.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem and those whose good deeds are light will be the ones who have lost their souls through their wrongful rejection of Our messages.
Yusuf Ali Those whose scale will be light, will be their souls in perdition, for that they wrongfully treated Our signs.
W. Khan and those whose good deeds are light [in the balance] will be the ones who have lost themselves because they wrongfully rejected Our signs.
M. Sarwar As for those whose bad deeds weigh heavier, they will lose their souls for their injustice to Our revelations.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem We established you [people] on the earth and provided you with a means of livelihood there––small thanks you give!
Yusuf Ali It is We Who have placed you with authority on earth, and provided you therein with means for the fulfilment of your life: small are the thanks that ye give!
W. Khan We established you in the land and provided you with a means of livelihood there: yet you are seldom thankful.
M. Sarwar We have made you inhabit the land and provided you with the means of sustenance. Only a few of you give thanks.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem We created you, We gave you shape, and then We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ and they did. But not Iblis: he was not one of those who bowed down.
Yusuf Ali It is We Who created you and gave you shape; then We bade the angels prostrate to Adam, and they prostrate; not so Iblis; He refused to be of those who prostrate.
W. Khan We created you, then We shaped you and then We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate yourselves before Adam,’ and they all prostrated themselves, except Satan. He was not among those who prostrated themselves.
M. Sarwar We created and shaped you, then told the angels to prostrate themselves before Adam. All the angels obeyed except Satan who did not.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem God said, ‘What prevented you from bowing down as I commanded you?’ and he said, ‘I am better than him: You created me from fire and him from clay.’
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "What prevented thee from prostrating when I commanded thee?" He said: "I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay."
W. Khan God asked, ‘What prevented you from prostrating yourself when I commanded you to?’ He replied, ‘I am better than he is; You created me from fire, while You created him from clay.’
M. Sarwar God asked, "What made you disobey Me?" Satan replied, "I am better than Adam, for You have created me out of fire and Adam out of clay."

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem God said, ‘Get down from here! This is no place for your arrogance. Get out! You are contemptible!’
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "Get thee down from this: it is not for thee to be arrogant here: get out, for thou art of the meanest (of creatures)."
W. Khan God said, ‘Get down from here! This is no place for your arrogance. Get out! You are contemptible!’
M. Sarwar The Lord ordered Satan to get out (of Paradise) saying, "This is no place for you to be proud. Get out of this place, for you are worthless".

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem but Iblis said, ‘Give me respite until the Day people are raised from the dead,’
Yusuf Ali He said: "Give me respite till the day they are raised up."
W. Khan Satan said, ‘Give me respite until the Day of Resurrection,’
M. Sarwar Satan asked the Lord to give him respite (keep him alive) until the Day of Resurrection.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem and God replied, ‘You have respite.’
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "Be thou among those who have respite."
W. Khan and God replied, ‘You are granted respite.’
M. Sarwar The Lord told him, "We will grant you this respite."

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem And then Iblis said, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lie in wait for them all on Your straight path:
Yusuf Ali He said: "Because thou hast thrown me out of the way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on thy straight way:
W. Khan Then Satan said, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lie in ambush for them on Your straight path:
M. Sarwar Then Satan said, "Because you have made me go astray, I shall certainly try to seduce people into straying from the right path.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem I will come at them- from their front and their back, from their right and their left- and You will find that most of them are ungrateful.’
Yusuf Ali "Then will I assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left: Nor wilt thou find, in most of them, gratitude (for thy mercies)."
W. Khan then I will surely come upon them from before them and from behind them and from their right and from their left, and then You will find most of them ungrateful.’
M. Sarwar I shall attack them from all directions and You will not find many of them giving You thanks".

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem God said, ‘Get out! You are disgraced and banished! I swear I shall fill Hell with you and all who follow you!
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "Get out from this, disgraced and expelled. If any of them follow thee,- Hell will I fill with you all.
W. Khan He said, ‘Get out of here, despised, and rejected! I shall fill Hell with all of those who follow you.’
M. Sarwar The Lord told Satan, "Get out of this garden, for you are banished and despised. Hell will be filled with all of those who follow you."

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem But you and your wife, Adam, live in the Garden. Both of you eat whatever you like, but do not go near this tree or you will become wrongdoers.’
Yusuf Ali "O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and enjoy (its good things) as ye wish: but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression."
W. Khan To Adam He said, ‘You and your wife, dwell in the Garden and eat and drink there from wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, lest you become wrongdoers.’
M. Sarwar Then the Lord said, "Adam, stay in the garden with your spouse and eat whatever you want therein, but do not go near this tree lest you transgress".

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem Satan whispered to them so as to expose their nakedness, which had been hidden from them: he said, ‘Your Lord only forbade you this tree to prevent you becoming angels or immortals,’
Yusuf Ali Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever."
W. Khan But Satan tempted them so that he might reveal to them their nakedness which had been hidden from them. He said, ‘Your Lord has forbidden you to approach this tree lest you should become angels or become of the immortals,’
M. Sarwar Satan tempted them to reveal that which was kept private from them and said, "Your Lord has not prohibited you (to eat the fruits of this tree) unless you want to be angels or immortal."

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem and he swore to them, ‘I am giving you sincere advice’-
Yusuf Ali And he swore to them both, that he was their sincere adviser.
W. Khan and he swore to them, ‘Surely, I am your well-wisher.’
M. Sarwar Satan swore before them that he was giving them good advice.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem he lured them with lies. Their nakedness became exposed to them when they had eaten from the tree: they began to put together leaves from the Garden to cover themselves. Their Lord called to them, ‘Did I not forbid you to approach that tree? Did I not warn you that Satan was your sworn enemy?’
Yusuf Ali So by deceit he brought about their fall: when they tasted of the tree, their shame became manifest to them, and they began to sew together the leaves of the garden over their bodies. And their Lord called unto them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an avowed enemy unto you?"
W. Khan Thus he cunningly seduced them. When they tasted the tree’s fruit, their nakedness became exposed to them and they started covering themselves with the leaves of the garden. Their Lord called out to them, ‘Did I not forbid you to approach that tree, and did I not say to you that Satan was surely your open enemy?’
M. Sarwar Thus, he deceitfully showed them (the tree). When they had tasted (fruits) from the tree, their private parts became revealed to them and they began to cover their private parts with leaves from the garden. Their Lord then called out to them saying, "Did I not forbid you to eat (fruits) from the tree and tell you that Satan was your sworn enemy?"

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem They replied, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged our souls: if You do not forgive us and have mercy, we shall be lost.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged our own souls: If thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Thy Mercy, we shall certainly be lost."
W. Khan They replied, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged our souls: if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall be among the lost.’
M. Sarwar They replied, "Lord, we have done injustice to our souls. If You will not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall certainly have incurred a great loss."

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘All of you get out! You are each other’s enemies. On earth you will have a place to stay and livelihood- for a time.’
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "Get ye down. With enmity between yourselves. On earth will be your dwelling-place and your means of livelihood,- for a time."
W. Khan He said, ‘Go down from here as enemies to each other. For a while, there is an abode for you and a provision on earth.
M. Sarwar The Lord told them to leave the garden as each other's enemies and go to earth to dwell and benefit from the means therein for an appointed time.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘There you will live; there you will die; from there you will be brought out.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "Therein shall ye live, and therein shall ye die; but from it shall ye be taken out (at last)."
W. Khan There you will live; there you will die; from there you will be raised up again.’
M. Sarwar He told them that, on earth, they would live, die, and be resurrected.

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem Children of Adam, We have given you garments to cover your nakedness and as adornment for you; the garment of God-consciousness is the best of all garments- this is one of God’s signs, so that people may take heed.
Yusuf Ali O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness,- that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition!
W. Khan O children of Adam! We have sent down to you clothes to cover your nakedness, and to be pleasing to the eye; but the raiment of righteousness is the best. That is one of the signs of God. So that people may take heed.
M. Sarwar Children of Adam, We have given you clothing to cover your private parts and for beauty, but the robe of piety is the best. Thus is the guidance of God so that you may take heed.

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem Children of Adam, do not let Satan seduce you, as he did your parents, causing them to leave the Garden, stripping them of their garments to expose their nakedness to them: he and his forces can see you from where you cannot see them: We have made evil ones allies to those who do not believe.
Yusuf Ali O ye Children of Adam! Let not Satan seduce you, in the same manner as He got your parents out of the Garden, stripping them of their raiment, to expose their shame: for he and his tribe watch you from a position where ye cannot see them: We made the evil ones friends (only) to those without faith.
W. Khan Children of Adam, do not let Satan seduce you, just as he turned your parents out of the Garden: he deprived them of their garment in order to make them aware of their nakedness. He and his forces watch you from where you do not see them! We have made the devils friends of those who do not believe.
M. Sarwar Children of Adam, do not let Satan seduce you, as he caused your parents to be expelled from the garden and made them take off their clothes in order to show them their private parts. Satan and those like him see you but you do not see them. We have made the Satans as friends for those who have no faith.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Yet when [these people] do something disgraceful, they say, ‘We found our forefathers doing this,’ and, ‘God has commanded us to do this.’ Say [Prophet], ‘God does not command disgraceful deeds. How can you say about God things that you do not know [to be true]?’
Yusuf Ali When they do aught that is shameful, they say: "We found our fathers doing so"; and "Allah commanded us thus": Say: "Nay, Allah never commands what is shameful: do ye say of Allah what ye know not?"
W. Khan And when they commit an indecency, they say, ‘This is what our fathers used to do and God has enjoined it on us.’ Say, ‘God does not enjoin what is indecent. Would you attribute to God something of which you have no knowledge?’
M. Sarwar When (The faithless) commit indecent acts they say, "We found our fathers doing this and God has commanded us to do the same." (Muhammad) tell them that God does not command anyone to commit indecency. Do you speak for God, saying things of which you have no knowledge?

Verse 29

Sahih Intl Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord has ordered justice and that you maintain yourselves [in worship of Him] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion." Just as He originated you, you will return [to life] -
Abdel Haleem Say, ‘My Lord commands righteousness. Direct your worship straight to Him wherever you pray; call on Him; devote your religion entirely to Him. Just as He first created you, so you will come back [to life] again.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "My Lord hath commanded justice; and that ye set your whole selves (to Him) at every time and place of prayer, and call upon Him, making your devotion sincere as in His sight: such as He created you in the beginning, so shall ye return."
W. Khan Say, ‘My Lord has commanded you to act justly. Turn your faces up toward Him at every time and place of worship, and call upon Him, making yourselves sincere towards Him in religion. As He brought you into being, so shall you return.’
M. Sarwar Say, "My Lord has ordered me to maintain justice. (People), pay due attention (when worshipping God). Pray to Him sincerely and be devoted in your religion. Just as He gave you life, He will bring you back to life again (after you die.)"

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem Some He has guided and some are doomed to stray: they have taken evil ones rather than God as their masters, thinking that they are rightly guided.
Yusuf Ali Some He hath guided: Others have (by their choice) deserved the loss of their way; in that they took the evil ones, in preference to Allah, for their friends and protectors, and think that they receive guidance.
W. Khan Some He has guided and some have earned misguidance: they have taken devils rather than God as their patrons, thinking that they are rightly guided.
M. Sarwar He has guided one group (of people) and the other group go is doomed to astray; the latter group took Satan as their guardian instead of God and thought that they were rightly guided.

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem Children of Adam, dress well whenever you are at worship, and eat and drink [as We have permitted] but do not be extravagant: God does not like extravagant people.
Yusuf Ali O Children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters.
W. Khan O Children of Adam, dress yourself properly whenever you are at worship: and eat and drink but do not be wasteful: God does not like wasteful people.
M. Sarwar Children of Adam, dress well when attending the mosques, eat and drink but do not be excessive for God does not love those who are excessive (in what they do).

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘Who has forbidden the adornment and the nourishment God has provided for His servants?’ Say, ‘They are [allowed] for those who believe during the life of this world: they will be theirs alone on the Day of Resurrection.’ This is how We make Our revelation clear for those who understand.
Yusuf Ali Say: Who hath forbidden the beautiful (gifts) of Allah, which He hath produced for His servants, and the things, clean and pure, (which He hath provided) for sustenance? Say: They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) purely for them on the Day of Judgment. Thus do We explain the signs in detail for those who understand.
W. Khan Say, ‘Who has forbidden the adornment of God, which He has brought forth for His servants and good things, clean and pure, which God has provided for His servants?’ Say, ‘They are [lawful] for the believers in the present life but they shall be exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.’ Thus We explain Our signs for a people who understand.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them, "Who has made it unlawful to maintain beauty and to eat the pure foods which God has created for His servants? They are made for the believers in this world and are exclusively for them in the life hereafter." Thus do We explain Our revelations to the people who have knowledge.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘My Lord only forbids disgraceful deeds- whether they be open or hidden- and sin and unjustified aggression, and that you, without His sanction, associate things with Him, and that you say things about Him without knowledge.’
Yusuf Ali Say: the things that my Lord hath indeed forbidden are: shameful deeds, whether open or secret; sins and trespasses against truth or reason; assigning of partners to Allah, for which He hath given no authority; and saying things about Allah of which ye have no knowledge.
W. Khan Say,‘My Lord has forbidden indecency, both open and hidden, sin and wrongful oppression and that, without His sanction, you associate things with Him, and that you say things about Him without knowledge.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "My Lord has only prohibited indecent acts committed in public or in secret, all sins, unjust rebellion, considering things equal to God without any heavenly authority, and speaking for God without having any knowledge (of what He has said)."

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem There is a time set for every people: they cannot hasten it, nor, when it comes, will they be able to delay it for a single moment.
Yusuf Ali To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance (it in anticipation).
W. Khan For all people a term has been set: and when [the end of] their term approaches, they can neither delay it by a single moment, nor can they advance it.
M. Sarwar All people can only live for an appointed time. When their term ends, they will not remain (alive) even for a single hour, nor will they die before the appointed time.

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem Children of Adam, when messengers come to you from among yourselves, reciting My revelations to you, for those who are conscious of God and live righteously, there will be no fear, nor will they grieve.
Yusuf Ali O ye Children of Adam! whenever there come to you messengers from amongst you, rehearsing My signs unto you,- those who are righteous and mend (their lives),- on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.
W. Khan Children of Adam! If messengers come to you from among yourselves, reciting My revelations to you, then those that take warning and mend their ways, on such shall come no fear nor shall they grieve.
M. Sarwar Children of Adam, when Messengers from among your own people come to you to preach My revelations, those who choose piety and reform themselves will have nothing to fear nor will they be grieved.

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem But those who reject Our revelations and arrogantly scorn them are the people of the Fire and there they will remain.
Yusuf Ali But those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance,- they are companions of the Fire, to dwell therein (for ever).
W. Khan But those who deny and scorn Our revelations shall be the inmates of Hell, where they shall remain forever.
M. Sarwar But those who have rejected Our revelations out of pride will be the dwellers of hell fire wherein they will live forever.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Who is more wrong than the person who invents lies against God or rejects His revelations? Such people will have their preordained share [in this world], but then, when Our angels arrive to take them back, saying, ‘Where are those you used to call on beside God?’ they will say, ‘They have deserted us.’ They will confess that they were disbelievers and
Yusuf Ali Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Signs? For such, their portion appointed must reach them from the Book (of decrees): until, when our messengers (of death) arrive and take their souls, they say: "Where are the things that ye used to invoke besides Allah?" They will reply, "They have left us in the lurch," And they will bear witness against themselves, that they had rejected Allah.
W. Khan Who does a greater wrong than he who invents lies against God or rejects His revelations? Such people will have what has been decreed for them. And when Our messengers come to them to take away their souls, they shall ask them, ‘Where are those you used to call upon besides God?’ They will answer, ‘They have deserted us;’ and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers?
M. Sarwar Who are more unjust than those who invent falsehoods against God and reject His revelations? These will have their share (of torment) which is ordained for them and when Our (angelic) Messengers come to them to cause them to die and ask them, "Where are those whom you had been worshipping besides God?" they will reply, "We had gone astray from the path of God." Thus, they will testify against their own souls by confessing their disbelief.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem God will say, ‘Join the crowds of jinn and humans who have gone before you into the Fire.’ Every crowd curses its fellow crowd as it enters, then, when they are all gathered inside, the last of them will say of the first, ‘Our Lord, it was they who led us astray: give them double punishment in the Fire’- God says, ‘Every one of you will have double punishment, though you do not know it’-
Yusuf Ali He will say: "Enter ye in the company of the peoples who passed away before you - men and jinns, - into the Fire." Every time a new people enters, it curses its sister-people (that went before), until they follow each other, all into the Fire. Saith the last about the first: "Our Lord! it is these that misled us: so give them a double penalty in the Fire." He will say: "Doubled for all" : but this ye do not understand.
W. Khan God will say, ‘Enter the Fire and join the bands of jinn and men that have gone before you.’ Every time a host enters [the fire], it will curse its fellow-host, then, when they are all gathered there, the last of them will say of the first, ‘Our Lord, it was they who led us astray: give them double punishment in the Fire,’—God will say, ‘Every one of you will have double punishment, though you do not know it’—
M. Sarwar (On the Day of Judgment) the Lord will say to them, "Join the group of jinn and people who lived before you, in hell." Each group, on entering hell, will curse the other dwellers, until all of them are brought together therein. The last group will accuse the first saying, "Lord, they made us go astray. Therefore, double their torment in the Fire." The Lord will reply, "For everyone of you there is a double torment, but you do not know it".

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem and the first of them will say to the last, ‘You were no better than us: taste the punishment you have earned.’
Yusuf Ali Then the first will say to the last: "See then! No advantage have ye over us; so taste ye of the penalty for all that ye did !"
W. Khan then the preceding one will say to the succeeding one: you are no better than us: so taste the punishment you have earned.’
M. Sarwar The first will then say, "You are no better than us; suffer the torment as the result of your deeds.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem The gates of Heaven will not be open to those who rejected Our revelations and arrogantly spurned them; even if a thick rope were to pass through the eye of a needle they would not enter the Garden. This is how We punish the guilty-
Yusuf Ali To those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, no opening will there be of the gates of heaven, nor will they enter the garden, until the camel can pass through the eye of the needle: Such is Our reward for those in sin.
W. Khan The gates of Heaven shall not be opened for those who rejected Our signs and arrogantly spurned them; nor shall they enter Paradise until a camel shall pass through the eye of a needle. That is how We repay the evildoers—
M. Sarwar For those who have rejected Our revelations out of pride, no door to the heavens will be opened, nor will they be admitted into Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a sewing needle. Thus do We recompense the criminals.

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem Hell will be their resting place and their covering, layer upon layer- this is how We punish those who do evil.
Yusuf Ali For them there is Hell, as a couch (below) and folds and folds of covering above: such is Our requital of those who do wrong.
W. Khan Hell shall be their bed, and over them will be coverings of fire—thus shall We reward the wrongdoers.
M. Sarwar For them, hell will be both a cradle and a blanket. Thus do We punish the unjust.

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem But those who believe and do good deeds- and We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear- are the people of the Garden and there they will remain.
Yusuf Ali But those who believe and work righteousness,- no burden do We place on any soul, but that which it can bear,- they will be Companions of the Garden, therein to dwell (for ever).
W. Khan But those who believed and did good deeds— and We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear— such are the heirs of the Garden and there they will remain forever.
M. Sarwar The righteously striving believers - We do not impose on any soul that which is beyond its ability - are the dwellers of Paradise wherein they will live forever.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem We shall have removed all ill feeling from their hearts; streams will flow at their feet. They will say, ‘Praise be to God, who guided us to this: had God not guided us, We would never have found the way. The messengers of our Lord brought the Truth.’ A voice will call out to them, ‘This is the Garden you have been given as your own on account of your deeds.’
Yusuf Ali And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury;- beneath them will be rivers flowing;- and they shall say: "Praise be to Allah, who hath guided us to this (felicity): never could we have found guidance, had it not been for the guidance of Allah: indeed it was the truth, that the messengers of our Lord brought unto us." And they shall hear the cry: "Behold! the garden before you! Ye have been made its inheritors, for your deeds (of righteousness)."
W. Khan And We shall remove whatever rancour may be in their hearts. At their feet shall flow rivers. And they shall say, ‘All praise belongs to God who has guided us to this. Had God not guided us, we would never have found the way. The messengers of our Lord brought the Truth.’A voice will call out to them, ‘This is the Garden which you have inherited by your labours.’
M. Sarwar We shall remove all grudges from their hearts. They will enjoy the flowing streams in the garden and will say, "God who guided us to this, deserves all praise. Had He not guided us, we would never have been able to find the right direction. The (angelic) Messengers of our Lord came to us with the Truth." They shall be told, 'This is the Paradise which you have inherited because of your good deeds."

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem The people of the Garden will cry out to the people of the Fire, ‘We have found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?’ and they will answer, ‘Yes’. A voice will proclaim from their midst, ‘God’s rejection [hangs] over the evildoers:
Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Garden will call out to the Companions of the Fire: "We have indeed found the promises of our Lord to us true: Have you also found Your Lord's promises true?" They shall say, "Yes"; but a crier shall proclaim between them: "The curse of Allah is on the wrong-doers;-
W. Khan The people of the Garden will call out to the people of the Fire, ‘We have found that what our Lord promised us is true. Have you, too, found that what your Lord promised you is true?’ They will say, ‘Yes, we have!’ Then a crier shall call out among them saying, ‘The curse of God is upon the wrongdoers—
M. Sarwar The people of Paradise will say to the dwellers of the fire, "We have found whatever our Lord promised has come true. Have you found whatever the Lord promised you to be true?" They will reply, "Yes, we have also found it to be true." Thereupon, someone will cry out, "God has condemned the unjust,

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem those who turned others away from God’s path and tried to make it crooked, those who denied the Hereafter.’
Yusuf Ali "Those who would hinder (men) from the path of Allah and would seek in it something crooked: they were those who denied the Hereafter."
W. Khan who turned people away from the path of God and sought to make it appear crooked, and who denied the Hereafter.’
M. Sarwar who prevented others from the way of God, sought to make (the path) appear crooked, and had no belief in the Day of Judgment."

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem A barrier divides the two groups with men on its heights recognizing each group by their marks: they will call out to the people of the Garden, ‘Peace be with you!’- they will not have entered, but they will be hoping,
Yusuf Ali Between them shall be a veil, and on the heights will be men who would know every one by his marks: they will call out to the Companions of the Garden, "peace on you": they will not have entered, but they will have an assurance (thereof).
W. Khan A barrier will divide the two groups, and on the heights there will be men who recognize each group by their marks. They will call out to the people of the Garden, ‘Peace be with you.’ They will not have yet entered, but they will be hoping [to do so],
M. Sarwar There will be a barrier between the people of Paradise and hell. There will be people on the heights who know everyone by their faces and who will say to the people of Paradise, "Peace be upon you." They hope to enter Paradise but are not yet therein.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem and when their glance falls upon the people of the Fire, they will say, ‘Our Lord, do not let us join the evildoers!’-
Yusuf Ali When their eyes shall be turned towards the Companions of the Fire, they will say: "Our Lord! send us not to the company of the wrong-doers."
W. Khan and when they turn their eyes towards the inmates of the Fire, they will say, ‘Our Lord, do not include us among the wrongdoers!’
M. Sarwar When their eyes turn to the dwellers of hell, they will pray, "Lord, do not place us among the unjust."

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem and the people of the heights will call out to certain men they recognize by their marks, ‘What use were your great numbers and your false pride?
Yusuf Ali The men on the heights will call to certain men whom they will know from their marks, saying: "Of what profit to you were your hoards and your arrogant ways?
W. Khan And the people of the heights will call out to men they recognize by their marks, ‘What use have your great numbers and your false pride been?
M. Sarwar The people of the Heights will say to those (in hell) whose faces they recognize, "Why did your supporters and your pride not help you?"

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem And are these the people you swore God would never bless? [Now these people are being told], “Enter the Garden! No fear for you, nor shall you grieve.”’
Yusuf Ali "Behold! are these not the men whom you swore that Allah with His Mercy would never bless? Enter ye the Garden: no fear shall be on you, nor shall ye grieve."
W. Khan See! are these not the people you swore would never earn God’s mercy? “Enter the Garden! No fear shall come upon you nor shall you grieve.”’
M. Sarwar They will also say, "Are these (the people of Paradise) the ones of whom you swore would receive no mercy from God?" They will continue, " People of Paradise, live therein without any fear or grief."

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem The people of the Fire will call to the people of Paradise, ‘Give us some water, or any of the sustenance God has granted you!’ and they will reply, ‘God has forbidden both to the disbelievers-
Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Fire will call to the Companions of the Garden: "Pour down to us water or anything that Allah doth provide for your sustenance." They will say: "Both these things hath Allah forbidden to those who rejected Him."
W. Khan The people of the Fire shall call out to the people of heaven, ‘Pour out some water on us, or give us something out of that which God has bestowed upon you.’ But the blessed will reply, ‘God has forbidden all that to those who denied the truth.
M. Sarwar The dwellers of the fire will ask the people of Paradise to give them some water or other things which God has granted to them. They will reply, "God has deprived the unbelievers of the blessings of Paradise."

Verse 51

Abdel Haleem those who took their religion for distraction, a mere game, and were deluded by worldly life.’ Today We shall ignore them, just as they have ignored their meeting with this Day and denied Our Revelations.
Yusuf Ali "Such as took their religion to be mere amusement and play, and were deceived by the life of the world." That day shall We forget them as they forgot the meeting of this day of theirs, and as they were wont to reject Our signs.
W. Khan Who treated religion as a pastime and an idle sport and whom the life of the world had beguiled.’ On that Day We shall forget them, as they forgot their meeting of that Day with Us, for they denied Our revelations.
M. Sarwar On that Day We will neglect those who were deceived by the worldly life and who treated their religion as a useless game, because they had forgotten such a day and rejected Our revelations.

Verse 52

Abdel Haleem We have brought people a Scripture- We have explained it on the basis of true knowledge- as guidance and mercy for those who believe.
Yusuf Ali For We had certainly sent unto them a Book, based on knowledge, which We explained in detail,- a guide and a mercy to all who believe.
W. Khan And surely We have brought them a Book which We have expounded with knowledge, a guide and a mercy for those who believe.
M. Sarwar We have revealed the Book of guidance and mercy to the believers and We know all of its details.

Verse 53

Abdel Haleem What are they waiting for but the fulfilment of its [final prophecy]? On the Day it is fulfilled, those who had ignored it will say, ‘Our Lord’s messenger spoke the truth. Is there anyone to intercede for us now? Or can we be sent back to behave differently from the way we behaved before?’ They will really have squandered their souls, and all [the idols] they invented will have deserted them.
Yusuf Ali Do they just wait for the final fulfilment of the event? On the day the event is finally fulfilled, those who disregarded it before will say: "The messengers of our Lord did indeed bring true (tidings). Have we no intercessors now to intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back? then should we behave differently from our behaviour in the past." In fact they will have lost their souls, and the things they invented will leave them in the lurch.
W. Khan Do they wait for the fulfillment of that of which it warns? On the Day when that fulfillment comes, those who had neglected it before will say, ‘The messengers of our Lord did indeed bring the truth. Have we then any intercessors who would intercede for us? Or, could we be sent back so that we might act differently from the way we used to?’ They have indeed ruined their souls and what they invented has forsaken them.
M. Sarwar (Despite the clear details of Our guidance in the Book) do they still wait for further interpretations? On the Day (of Judgment) when its interpretations will be revealed, those who had ignored its guidance will confess, saying, "The Messengers of our Lord had certainly come to us with the Truth. Will anyone intercede for us or send us back (to life) so that we would be able to act in a different manner to that which we had done before?" These people have certainly lost their souls and their evil inventions (which they had used for false excuses) will vanish.

Verse 54

Abdel Haleem Your Lord is God, who created the heavens and earth in six Days, then established Himself on the throne; He makes the night cover the day in swift pursuit; He created the sun, moon, and stars to be subservient to His command; all creation and command belong to Him. Exalted be God, Lord of all the worlds!
Yusuf Ali Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o'er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!
W. Khan Your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six Days [periods] and then settled Himself firmly on the throne. He throws the veil of night over the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession. It was He who created the sun, the moon and the stars, and made them subservient to His will. His is the creation, His the command. Blessed be God, Lord of the universe!
M. Sarwar Your Lord is God who established His dominion over the Throne (of the realm) after having created the heavens and the earth in six days. He made the night darken the day which it pursues at a (considerable) speed and He made the sun and the moon submissive to His command. Is it not He Who creates and governs all things? Blessed is God, the Cherisher of the Universe.

Verse 55

Abdel Haleem Call on your Lord humbly and privately- He does not like those who transgress His bounds:
Yusuf Ali Call on your Lord with humility and in private: for Allah loveth not those who trespass beyond bounds.
W. Khan Call on your Lord with humility and in secret—He does not love the transgressors:
M. Sarwar Pray to your Lord humbly and privately. God does not love the transgressors.

Verse 56

Abdel Haleem do not corrupt the earth after it has been set right- call on Him fearing and hoping. The mercy of God is close to those who do good.
Yusuf Ali Do no mischief on the earth, after it hath been set in order, but call on Him with fear and longing (in your hearts): for the Mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good.
W. Khan do not spread corruption on the earth after it has been set in order—pray to Him with fear and hope, God’s mercy is close to those who do good.
M. Sarwar Do not destroy the land after it has been well established but pray to God, have fear of Him, and hope to receive His mercy. God's mercy is close to the righteous people.

Verse 57

Abdel Haleem It is God who sends the winds, bearing good news of His coming grace, and when they have gathered up the heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land where We cause rain to fall, bringing out all kinds of crops, just as We shall bring out the dead. Will you not reflect?
Yusuf Ali It is He Who sendeth the winds like heralds of glad tidings, going before His mercy: when they have carried the heavy-laden clouds, We drive them to a land that is dead, make rain to descend thereon, and produce every kind of harvest therewith: thus shall We raise up the dead: perchance ye may remember.
W. Khan It is God who sends forth the winds as harbingers of His mercy, and when they have gathered up the heavy clouds, We drive them on to a dead land where We cause rain to fall, bringing out all kinds of fruit, just as We will raise the dead to life. Perhaps you will take heed.
M. Sarwar God sends the wind bearing the glad news of His mercy. When heavy clouds are formed, We drive them unto a barren country and rain down on it water to cause all kinds of fruits to grow. In the same way do We bring the dead to life again. Perhaps you would take heed.

Verse 58

Abdel Haleem Vegetation comes out of good land in abundance, by the will of its Lord, but out of bad land only scantily: We explain Our Revelations in various ways to those who give thanks.
Yusuf Ali From the land that is clean and good, by the will of its Cherisher, springs up produce, (rich) after its kind: but from the land that is bad, springs up nothing but that which is niggardly: thus do we explain the signs by various (symbols) to those who are grateful.
W. Khan Vegetation comes out of good land in abundance by the will of its Lord, but out of bad land only scantily. Thus We explain Our signs in diverse ways for those who give thanks.
M. Sarwar A good land produces plants, by the permission of its Lord, but a wicked land produces only miserable, bitter plants. Thus do We show a variety of evidence for those who give thanks.

Verse 59

W. Khan Do you find it so strange that a message should come from your Lord through a man from among yourselves, so that he may warn you and so that you may fear God and be shown mercy?’

W. Khan But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the Ark, and We drowned those who rejected Our signs. They were indeed a blind people.

Call in remembrance the benefits (ye have received) from Allah: that so ye may prosper."
W. Khan Do you find it strange that a Message should come from your Lord, through one of your own men, to warn you? Remember how He made you successors of Noah’s people, and increased you greatly in stature. Remember the favours of God, so that you may prosper.’
M. Sarwar Does it seem strange to you that a reminder from your Lord should be sent to a man among you so that He may warn you? W. Khan Do not lie in ambush on every pathway, threatening people, barring those who believe from the Way of God, seeking to make it appear crooked. Remember when you were few in number and He multiplied you. Consider the fate of those who used to spread corruption.

Yusuf Ali The leaders, the arrogant party among his people, said: "O Shu'aib! we shall certainly drive thee out of our city - (thee) and those who believe with thee; or else ye (thou and they) shall have to return to our ways and religion." He said: "What! even though we do detest (them)?
W. Khan The arrogant leaders of his people said, ‘Shu‘ayb, we will expel you and your fellow believers from our town unless you return to our faith.’ He said, ‘Even though we detest it?
M. Sarwar A proud group among Shu'ayb's people said, "We must expel you (Shu'ayb) and your followers from our town unless you give-up your faith and live as our own people." Shu'ayb asked them, "Will you use force against us?

Verse 89

Abdel Haleem If we were to return to your religion after God has saved us from it, we would be inventing lies about Him: there is no way we could return to it- unless by the will of God our Lord: in His knowledge He comprehends everything. We put our trust in God. Our Lord, expose the truth [and judge] between us and our people, for You are the best judge.’
Yusuf Ali "We should indeed invent a lie against Allah, if we returned to your ways after Allah hath rescued us therefrom; nor could we by any manner of means return thereto unless it be as in the will and plan of Allah, Our Lord. Our Lord can reach out to the utmost recesses of things by His knowledge. In the Allah is our trust. our Lord! decide Thou between us and our people in truth, for Thou art the best to decide."
W. Khan We would be inventing lies against God if we returned to your faith after God has delivered us from it. It is not for us to return to it unless God our Lord so willed. Our Lord encompasses all things in His knowledge. We have put our trust in God. Our Lord, expose the truth [and judge] between us and our people, You are the best judge.’
M. Sarwar We would certainly be inventing falsehoods against God if we were to accept your way of life, when God has already saved us from it. We do not have to accept it unless God, our Lord, wills it. Our Lord's knowledge covers all things. We trust in Him and ask Him to judge among us and our people, for He is the best Judge."

Verse 90

Abdel Haleem The disbelieving leaders among his people said, ‘You will certainly be losers if you follow Shuayb’-
Yusuf Ali The leaders, the unbelievers among his people, said: "If ye follow Shu'aib, be sure then ye are ruined!"
W. Khan The leading men of his people who were bent on denying the truth, said, ‘If you follow Shu‘ayb, you will certainly be the losers.’
M. Sarwar A group of the unbelievers among his people told the others, "If you follow Shu'ayb, you will certainly lose a great deal."

Verse 91

Abdel Haleem an earthquake seized them: by the next morning they were lying dead in their homes;
Yusuf Ali But the earthquake took them unawares, and they lay prostrate in their homes before the morning!
W. Khan Thereupon an earthquake overtook them and morning found them lying flattened in their homes;
M. Sarwar Suddenly, an earthquake struck them and left them motionless in their homes.

Verse 92

Abdel Haleem it was as if those who had rejected Shuayb had never lived there; it was those who had rejected Shuayb who were the losers-
Yusuf Ali The men who reject Shu'aib became as if they had never been in the homes where they had flourished: the men who rejected Shu'aib - it was they who were ruined!
W. Khan those who had denied Shu‘ayb became as though they had never lived there. Those who denied Shu‘ayb, were themselves the losers.
M. Sarwar Those who called Shu'ayb a liar were destroyed as though they never existed. They certainly were the ones to lose a great deal.

Verse 93

Abdel Haleem so he turned away from them, saying, ‘My people, I delivered my Lord’s messages to you and gave you sincere advice, so why should I grieve for people who refused to believe?’
Yusuf Ali So Shu'aib left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the messages for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but how shall I lament over a people who refuse to believe!"
W. Khan So he turned away from them, saying, ‘My people, I delivered my Lord’s messages to you and gave you sincere advice, so why should I grieve for people who refused to believe?’
M. Sarwar He turned away from them saying, "My people, I preached the Message of my Lord to you and gave you good advice. How could I be sorry for the unbelievers?"

Verse 94

Abdel Haleem Whenever We sent a prophet to a town, We afflicted its [disbelieving] people with suffering and hardships, so that they might humble themselves [before God],
Yusuf Ali Whenever We sent a prophet to a town, We took up its people in suffering and adversity, in order that they might learn humility.
W. Khan Whenever We sent a prophet to a town, We afflicted its people with suffering and adversity, so that they might humble themselves [before God],
M. Sarwar To every town that We sent a Prophet, We tested its inhabitants through distress and adversity so that perhaps they would submit themselves to Us.

Verse 95

Abdel Haleem and then We changed their hardship into prosperity, until they multiplied. But then they said, ‘Hardship and affluence also befell our forefathers,’ and so We took them suddenly, unawares.
Yusuf Ali Then We changed their suffering into prosperity, until they grew and multiplied, and began to say: "Our fathers (too) were touched by suffering and affluence" ... Behold! We called them to account of a sudden, while they realised not (their peril).
W. Khan and then We changed their hardship into ease until they grew affluent and said, ‘Our fathers had also experienced adversity and prosperity,’ then We seized them suddenly, unawares.
M. Sarwar We then replaced their misfortune with well-being until they were relieved and began saying, "Our fathers had also experienced good and bad days." Suddenly, We struck them (with torment) while they were all unaware (of what was happening).

Verse 96

Abdel Haleem If the people of those towns had believed and been mindful of God, We would have showered them with blessings from the heavens and earth, but they rejected the truth and so We punished them for their misdeeds.
Yusuf Ali If the people of the towns had but believed and feared Allah, We should indeed have opened out to them (All kinds of) blessings from heaven and earth; but they rejected (the truth), and We brought them to book for their misdeeds.
W. Khan Had the people of those towns believed in and feared God, We would have showered upon them blessings from heaven and earth, but they rejected the truth. So We seized them on account of their misdeeds.
M. Sarwar Had the people of the towns believed (in Our revelations) and maintained piety, We would have certainly showered on them Our blessings from the sky and the earth. But they called Our revelations lies, thus Our torment struck them for their evil deeds.

Verse 97

Abdel Haleem Do the people of these towns feel secure that Our punishment will not come upon them by night, while they are asleep?
Yusuf Ali Did the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of Our wrath by night while they were asleep?
W. Khan Do the people of these towns now feel secure against the coming of Our punishment upon them by night while they are asleep?
M. Sarwar Did the people of the towns think themselves secure from Our wrath that could strike them at night during their sleep

Verse 98

Abdel Haleem Do the people of these towns feel secure that Our punishment will not come upon them by day, while they are at play?
Yusuf Ali Or else did they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they played about (care-free)?
W. Khan Or, do they feel secure against the coming of Our punishment upon them in the forenoon while they are at play?
M. Sarwar or that which could seize them during their busy hours of the day?

Verse 99

Abdel Haleem Do they feel secure against God’s plan? Only the losers feel secure against God’s plan.
Yusuf Ali Did they then feel secure against the plan of Allah?- but no one can feel secure from the Plan of Allah, except those (doomed) to ruin!
W. Khan Do they feel secure against God’s devising? No one feels secure against God’s devising except for those doomed to ruin.
M. Sarwar Did they consider themselves secure from the retribution of God? No one can have such attitude except those who are lost.

Verse 100

Abdel Haleem Is it not clear to those who inherit the land from former generations that We can punish them too for their sins if We will? And seal up their hearts so that they cannot hear?
Yusuf Ali To those who inherit the earth in succession to its (previous) possessors, is it not a guiding, (lesson) that, if We so willed, We could punish them (too) for their sins, and seal up their hearts so that they could not hear?
W. Khan Does it not guide the people who inherit the land from former people that We can punish them for their sins if We will? And seal up their hearts so that they would not be able to lend an ear
M. Sarwar Is it not a lesson for the successors of the past generations that had We wanted, We could have punished them for their sins, sealed their hearts and deprived them of hearing?

Verse 101

Abdel Haleem We have told you [Prophet] the stories of those towns: messengers came to them, and clear signs, but they would not believe in what they had already rejected- in this way God seals the hearts of disbelievers.
Yusuf Ali Such were the towns whose story We (thus) relate unto thee: There came indeed to them their messengers with clear (signs): But they would not believe what they had rejected before. Thus doth Allah seal up the hearts of those who reject faith.
W. Khan We to words of guidance? have told you the stories of those towns: their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they were never going to believe in something they had already rejected. Thus God seals up the hearts of those who deny the truth.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), such were the stories of the people who lived in (different) towns in the past. We had sent Our Messengers to them with (certain) miracles but the people still did not believe in what they had rejected before. Such is how God seals the hearts of the unbelievers.

Verse 102

Abdel Haleem We found that most of them did not honour their commitments; We found that most of them were defiant.
Yusuf Ali Most of them We found not men (true) to their covenant: but most of them We found rebellious and disobedient.
W. Khan We found most of them untrue to their covenants, indeed We found most of them to be defiant.
M. Sarwar We did not find many among them keeping their promises. However, We did find many evil-doers among them.

Verse 103

Abdel Haleem After these, We sent Moses to Pharaoh and his leading supporters with Our signs, but they rejected them. See the fate of those who used to spread corruption.
Yusuf Ali Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them: So see what was the end of those who made mischief.
W. Khan After them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs. But they willfully rejected them. Consider the end of the evil-doers.
M. Sarwar After the time of those people, We sent Moses with Our miracles to Pharaoh and his people, but they too rejected Our miracles. Consider, how terrible the end of the evil-doers is!

Verse 104

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of all the Worlds,
Yusuf Ali Moses said: "O Pharaoh! I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds,-
W. Khan Moses said, ‘Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the Universe,
M. Sarwar Moses told the Pharaoh, "I am a Messengers from the Lord of the Universe.

Verse 105

Abdel Haleem duty-bound to say nothing about God but the truth, and I have brought you a clear sign from your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go with me.’
Yusuf Ali One for whom it is right to say nothing but truth about Allah. Now have I come unto you (people), from your Lord, with a clear (Sign): So let the Children of Israel depart along with me."
W. Khan duty-bound to say nothing about God but the truth, and I have brought you a clear sign from your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go with me.’
M. Sarwar I must only speak what is true about God. I have brought you miracles from your Lord; therefore, let the children of Israel go free".

Verse 106

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘Produce this sign you have brought, if you are telling the truth.’
Yusuf Ali (Pharaoh) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth,- if thou tellest the truth."
W. Khan [Pharaoh] said, ‘If you come with a sign, then produce it, if you are telling the truth.’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh asked Moses to show his miracles if he was telling the truth.

Verse 107

Abdel Haleem So Moses threw his staff and- lo and behold!- it was a snake, clear to all,
Yusuf Ali Then (Moses) threw his rod, and behold! it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!
W. Khan Then Moses threw down his staff and suddenly, unmistakably, it appeared as a serpent,
M. Sarwar So Moses threw down his staff and suddenly it turned into a real serpent.

Verse 108

Abdel Haleem and then he pulled out his hand and- lo and behold!- it was white for all to see.
Yusuf Ali And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white to all beholders!
W. Khan and he drew forth his hand, and it appeared [shining] white to the beholders.
M. Sarwar Then he uncovered his hand and it appeared sheer white to the onlookers.

Verse 109

Abdel Haleem The leaders among Pharaoh’s people said, ‘This man is a learned sorcerer!
Yusuf Ali Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed.
W. Khan The chiefs of Pharaoh’s people said, ‘This is most surely a skillful magician,
M. Sarwar Some of the Pharaoh's nobles considered him to be no more than a skillful magician

Verse 110

Abdel Haleem He means to drive you out of your land!’ Pharaoh said, ‘What do you suggest?’
Yusuf Ali "His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?"
W. Khan who seeks to drive you from your land!’ Pharaoh said, ‘What then do you advise?’
M. Sarwar and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter?

Verse 111

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘Delay him and his brother for a while, and send messengers to all the cities
Yusuf Ali They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect-
W. Khan They said, ‘Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send into the cities summoners,
M. Sarwar The others suggested holding Moses and his brother off and sending to all the cities

Verse 112

Abdel Haleem to summon every learned sorcerer to you.’
Yusuf Ali And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."
W. Khan who should bring to you every skillful magician.’
M. Sarwar to bring together at the Pharaohs court all the skillful magicians.

Verse 113

Abdel Haleem The sorcerers came to Pharaoh and said, ‘Shall we be rewarded if we win?’
Yusuf Ali So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!"
W. Khan And the magicians came to Pharaoh and asked, ‘Shall we have a reward, if we should prevail?’
M. Sarwar The magicians came to the Pharaoh and said, "We must have our reward if we are to gain a victory over him (Moses)".

Verse 114

Abdel Haleem and he replied, ‘Yes, and you will join my inner court.’
Yusuf Ali He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."
W. Khan Pharaoh replied, ‘Certainly, and you shall also become my courtiers.’
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter."

Verse 115

Abdel Haleem So they said, ‘Moses, will you throw first or shall we?’
Yusuf Ali They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?"
W. Khan They said, ‘Moses, will you first throw, or shall we?’
M. Sarwar The magicians asked Moses, "Will you throw your staff first or shall we?"

Verse 116

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘You throw,’ and they did, casting a spell on people’s eyes, striking fear into them, and bringing about great sorcery.
Yusuf Ali Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic.
W. Khan He said, ‘You throw [first]!’ When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic.
M. Sarwar He replied, "Throw yours first." Their great magic bewitched people's eyes and terrified them.

Verse 117

Abdel Haleem Then We inspired Moses, ‘Throw your staff,’ and- lo and behold!––it devoured their fakery.
Yusuf Ali We put it into Moses's mind by inspiration: "Throw (now) thy rod":and behold! it swallows up straight away all the falsehoods which they fake!
W. Khan Then We inspired Moses, saying, ‘Throw down your staff.’ And it immediately swallowed up their false devices.
M. Sarwar We inspired Moses to throw his staff, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented.

Verse 118

Abdel Haleem The truth was confirmed and what they had produced came to nothing:
Yusuf Ali Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect.
W. Khan Thus the truth prevailed and what they had produced came to nothing:
M. Sarwar Thus the Truth prevailed and their false art was banished.

Verse 119

Abdel Haleem they were defeated there and utterly humiliated.
Yusuf Ali So the (great ones) were vanquished there and then, and were made to look small.
W. Khan Pharaoh and his men were defeated and utterly humiliated.
M. Sarwar The magicians who were defeated on the spot and were proved to be worthless,

M. Sarwar threw themselves down in prostration

Verse 121

Abdel Haleem and said, ‘We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
Yusuf Ali Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,-
W. Khan and said, ‘We believe in the Lord of the Universe,
M. Sarwar saying, "We declare our belief in the Lord of the Universe,

Verse 122

Abdel Haleem the Lord of Moses and Aaron!’
Yusuf Ali "The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
W. Khan the Lord of Moses and Aaron!’
M. Sarwar the Lord of Moses and Aaron."

Verse 123

Abdel Haleem but Pharaoh said, ‘How dare you believe in Him before I have given you permission? This is a plot you have hatched to drive the people out of this city! Soon you will see:
Yusuf Ali Said Pharaoh: "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall ye know (the consequences).
W. Khan Pharaoh said, ‘You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences,
M. Sarwar The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know.

Verse 124

Abdel Haleem I will cut off your alternate hands and feet and then crucify you all!’
Yusuf Ali "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross."
W. Khan I will cut off your hands and feet on alternate sides and then crucify you all!’
M. Sarwar I will cut off your hands and feet on the alternate sides and crucify you all."

Verse 125

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘And so we shall return to our Lord-
Yusuf Ali They said: "For us, We are but sent back unto our Lord:
W. Khan They replied, ‘We shall surely return to our Lord.
M. Sarwar The magicians said, "We will certainly return to Our Lord.

Verse 126

Abdel Haleem Your only grievance against us is that we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour steadfastness upon us and let us die in devotion to You.’
Yusuf Ali "But thou dost wreak thy vengeance on us simply because we believed in the Signs of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims (who bow to thy will)!
W. Khan You would punish us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they were shown to us. Our Lord, pour patience upon us, and cause us to die in a state of submission to You.’
M. Sarwar You only take revenge on us because we believed in the Lord when we saw His miracles. Lord, grant us patience and let us die Muslims (submitted to God)."

Verse 127

Abdel Haleem The leaders among Pharaoh’s people said to him, ‘But are you going to leave Moses and his people to spread corruption in the land and forsake you and your gods?’ He replied, ‘We shall kill their male children, sparing only the females: We have complete power over them.’
Yusuf Ali Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people: "Wilt thou leave Moses and his people, to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon thee and thy gods?" He said: "Their male children will we slay; (only) their females will we save alive; and we have over them (power) irresistible."
W. Khan The chiefs of Pharaoh’s people said, ‘Will you allow Moses and his people to spread corruption in the land, and to forsake you and your gods?’ He replied, ‘We shall kill their male children and spare only the females. We have complete power over them.’
M. Sarwar Some of the Pharaohs people said, "Will you let Moses and his people destroy the land and disregard you and your gods?" The Pharaoh said, "We will kill their sons and leave their women alive; they are under our domination."

Verse 128

Abdel Haleem Moses said to his people, ‘Turn to God for help and be steadfast: the earth belongs to God- He gives it as their own to whichever of His servants He chooses- and the happy future belongs to those who are mindful of Him,’
Yusuf Ali Said Moses to his people: "Pray for help from Allah, and (wait) in patience and constancy: for the earth is Allah's, to give as a heritage to such of His servants as He pleaseth; and the end is (best) for the righteous.
W. Khan Moses said to his people, ‘Turn to God for help and be patient. The earth belongs to God. He gives it to those of His servants whom He chooses, and the future belongs to the God-fearing.’
M. Sarwar Moses told his people to seek help from God and exercise patience. The earth belongs to Him and He has made it the heritage of whichever of His servants He chooses. The final victory is for the pious ones.

Verse 129

Abdel Haleem and they replied, ‘We were being persecuted long before you came to us, and since then too.’ He said, ‘Your Lord may well destroy your enemy and make you successors to the land to see how you behave.’
Yusuf Ali They said: "We have had (nothing but) trouble, both before and after thou camest to us." He said: "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you inheritors in the earth; that so He may try you by your deeds."
W. Khan They replied, ‘We were being persecuted before you came to us, and we are still being persecuted.’ He said, ‘Your Lord may well destroy your enemy and make you successors to the land. Then He will see how you conduct yourselves.’
M. Sarwar His people said, "We suffered a great deal before you came and we are still suffering even after you have come." Moses (tried to encourage them) by saying, "There is hope that your Lord will destroy your enemies and make you (their) successors in the land. So consider how you act."

Verse 130

Abdel Haleem We inflicted years of drought and crop failure on Pharaoh’s people, so that they might take heed,
Yusuf Ali We punished the people of Pharaoh with years (of droughts) and shortness of crops; that they might receive admonition.
W. Khan We afflicted Pharaoh’s people with shortages of food and famine so that they might take heed,
M. Sarwar For years We afflicted Pharaoh's people with shortages in food so that perhaps they would take heed.

Verse 131

Abdel Haleem then, when something good came their way, they said, ‘This is our due!’. When something bad came, they ascribed it to the evil omen of Moses and those with him, but their ‘evil omen’ was really from God, though most of them did not realize it.
Yusuf Ali But when good (times) came, they said, "This is due to us;" When gripped by calamity, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Moses and those with him! Behold! in truth the omens of evil are theirs in Allah's sight, but most of them do not understand!
W. Khan then when something good came to them, they said, ‘It is our due!’—but when something bad came, they ascribed it as an ill-omen to Moses and those with him. Surely their [evil] fortune had been decreed by God, but most of them did not know this.
M. Sarwar But they would always ascribe their well-being to themselves and the misfortunes that they would experience to Moses and his people. Their fate is certainly in the hands of God but many of them do not know.

Verse 132

Abdel Haleem They said, ‘We will not believe in you, no matter what signs you produce to cast a spell on us,’
Yusuf Ali They said (to Moses): "Whatever be the Signs thou bringest, to work therewith thy sorcery on us, we shall never believe in thee.
W. Khan They said, ‘Whatever miracles you work to bewitch us, we will not believe in you.’
M. Sarwar They said to Moses, "No matter what miracle you show to bewitch us, we will not believe you."

Verse 133

Abdel Haleem and so We let loose on them the flood, locusts, lice, frogs, blood- all clear signs. They were arrogant, wicked people.
Yusuf Ali So We sent (plagues) on them: Wholesale death, Locusts, Lice, Frogs, And Blood: Signs openly self-explained: but they were steeped in arrogance,- a people given to sin.
W. Khan Then We afflicted them with storms, and locusts, and lice, and frogs, and blood: so many clear signs. But they were steeped in arrogance, for they were a people given to sin.
M. Sarwar We sent upon them widespread calamities: floods of locusts, lice, frogs, and blood. All were distinct miracles but these criminals all the time remained proud.

Verse 134

Abdel Haleem They would say, whenever a plague struck them, ‘Moses, pray to your Lord for us by virtue of the promise He has made to you: if you relieve us of the plague, we will believe you and let the Children of Israel go with you,’
Yusuf Ali Every time the penalty fell on them, they said: "O Moses! on your behalf call on thy Lord in virtue of his promise to thee: If thou wilt remove the penalty from us, we shall truly believe in thee, and we shall send away the Children of Israel with thee."
W. Khan Whenever a plague struck them, they would say, ‘Moses, pray to your Lord for us by virtue of the promise He has made to you: if you remove this plague from us, we will surely believe in you and let the Children of Israel go with you,’
M. Sarwar When the torment would strike them, they would ask Moses, "Pray for us to your Lord through your covenant with Him. If He saves us from the torment, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave".

Verse 135

Abdel Haleem but when We relieved them of the plague and gave them a fixed period [in which to fulfil their promise]- lo and behold!- they broke it.
Yusuf Ali But every time We removed the penalty from them according to a fixed term which they had to fulfil,- Behold! they broke their word!
W. Khan but whenever We removed the plague from them, giving them time to make good their promise, they would break their word.
M. Sarwar But when We relieved them from the torment for a given time, they again broke their promise.

Verse 136

Abdel Haleem And so, because they rejected Our signs and paid them no heed, We exacted retribution from them: We drowned them in the sea
Yusuf Ali So We exacted retribution from them: We drowned them in the sea, because they rejected Our Signs and failed to take warning from them.
W. Khan So We exacted retribution from them and drowned them in the sea, because they rejected Our signs and paid no heed to them;
M. Sarwar We took revenge on them for their rejecting Our miracles, by drowning them in the sea, but they were not aware of (reality).

Verse 137

Abdel Haleem and We made those who had been oppressed succeed to both the east and the west of the land that We had blessed. Your Lord’s good promise to the Children of Israel was fulfilled, because of their patience, and We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people were making and what they were building.
Yusuf Ali And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both east and west, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride).
W. Khan We made the people who were considered weak inheritors of the eastern parts and western parts of the land which We had blessed. Thus your Lord’s good promise to the Children of Israel was fulfilled, because of their patience, and We destroyed all that Pharaoh and his people had built and all that they had raised high.
M. Sarwar We gave the suppressed people the blessed eastern and western regions as their inheritance. Thus, the promises of your Lord to the children of Israel all came true because of the patience which they exercised. He destroyed all the establishments of the Pharaoh and his people.

Verse 138

Abdel Haleem We took the Children of Israel across the sea, but when they came upon a people who worshipped idols, they said, ‘Moses, make a god for us like theirs.’ He said, ‘You really are foolish people:
Yusuf Ali We took the Children of Israel (with safety) across the sea. They came upon a people devoted entirely to some idols they had. They said: "O Moses! fashion for us a god like unto the gods they have." He said: "Surely ye are a people without knowledge.
W. Khan We brought the children of Israel across the sea and they came upon a people who were devoted to their idols. They said, ‘Moses, give us a god just like the gods these people have.’ He said, ‘You are indeed an ignorant people:
M. Sarwar We helped the children of Israel to cross the sea. They came to a people who worshipped idols. The Israelites demanded Moses to make gods for them like those of the idol-worshippers. Moses told them, "You are an ignorant people.

Verse 139

Abdel Haleem [the cult] these people practise is doomed to destruction, and what they have been doing is useless.
Yusuf Ali "As to these folk,- the cult they are in is (but) a fragment of a ruin, and vain is the (worship) which they practise."
W. Khan what they are engaged in is doomed to destruction and all their works are in vain.’
M. Sarwar What these people worship is doomed to be destroyed and their deeds are based on falsehood.

Verse 140

Abdel Haleem Why should I seek any god other than God for you, when He has favoured you over all other people?’
Yusuf Ali He said: "Shall I seek for you a god other than the (true) Allah, when it is Allah Who hath endowed you with gifts above the nations?"
W. Khan He said, ‘Shall I seek a deity for you other than God, while it is He who has exalted you above all peoples?
M. Sarwar Should I choose for you a lord other than God who has favored you above all other people?

Verse 141

Abdel Haleem Remember how We saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were subjecting you to the worst of sufferings, killing your male children, sparing only your females- that was a mighty ordeal from your Lord.
Yusuf Ali And remember We rescued you from Pharaoh's people, who afflicted you with the worst of penalties, who slew your male children and saved alive your females: in that was a momentous trial from your Lord.
W. Khan We delivered you from Pharaoh’s people, who afflicted you with dreadful torment, slaying your male children and sparing only your daughters. That was surely a great trial for you by your Lord.’
M. Sarwar "Children of Israel, when I saved you from the Pharaoh and his people who made you suffer the worst kinds of torment, killing your sons and keeping your women alive, it was a great trial for you from your Lord."

Verse 142

Abdel Haleem We appointed thirty nights for Moses, then added ten more: the term set by his Lord was completed in forty nights. Moses said to his brother Aaron, ‘Take my place among my people: act rightly and do not follow the way of those who spread corruption.’
Yusuf Ali We appointed for Moses thirty nights, and completed (the period) with ten (more): thus was completed the term (of communion) with his Lord, forty nights. And Moses had charged his brother Aaron (before he went up): "Act for me amongst my people: Do right, and follow not the way of those who do mischief."
W. Khan We appointed thirty nights for Moses, then added ten more: the term set by his Lord was fulfilled in forty nights. Moses said to his brother Aaron, ‘Take my place among my people: act rightly and do not follow the way of those who spread corruption.’
M. Sarwar We told Moses to stay with Us for thirty nights (in the mountains) but added ten nights more so his appointment with his Lord came to an end after forty nights. Moses had appointed his brother Aaron as his deputy among his people during his absence saying, "Try to reform them and do not follow the way of the evil-doers."

Verse 143

Abdel Haleem When Moses came for the appointment, and his Lord spoke to him, he said, ‘My Lord, show Yourself to me: let me see You!’ He said, ‘You will never see Me, but look at that mountain: if it remains standing firm, you will see Me,’ and when his Lord revealed Himself to the mountain, He made it crumble: Moses fell down unconscious. When he recovered, he said, ‘Glory be to You! To You I turn in repentance! I am the first to believe!’
Yusuf Ali When Moses came to the place appointed by Us, and his Lord addressed him, He said: "O my Lord! show (Thyself) to me, that I may look upon thee." Allah said: "By no means canst thou see Me (direct); But look upon the mount; if it abide in its place, then shalt thou see Me." When his Lord manifested His glory on the Mount, He made it as dust. And Moses fell down in a swoon. When he recovered his senses he said: "Glory be to Thee! to Thee I turn in repentance, and I am the first to believe."
W. Khan And when Moses came at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, ‘My Lord, show Yourself to me so that I may look at You.’ He replied, ‘You cannot see Me, but look at the mountain; if it remains firmly in its place, then only will you see Me.’And when his Lord manifested Himself on the mountain, He broke it into pieces and Moses felt down unconscious. And when he recovered, he said, ‘Glory be to You, I turn towards You, and I am the first to believe.’
M. Sarwar During the appointment, the Lord spoke to Moses. He asked the Lord to show Himself so that he could look at Him. The Lord replied, "You can never see Me. But look at the mountain. If the mountain remains firm only then will you see Me." When the Lord manifested His Glory to the mountain, He turned it into dust and Moses fell down upon his face senseless. After regaining his senses, Moses said, "Lord, You are all Holy. I repent for what I asked you to do and I am the first to believe in You."

Verse 144

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘Moses, I have raised you above other people by [giving you] My messages and speaking to you: hold on to what I have given you; be one of those who give thanks.’
Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "O Moses! I have chosen thee above (other) men, by the mission I (have given thee) and the words I (have spoken to thee): take then the (revelation) which I give thee, and be of those who give thanks."
W. Khan He replied, ‘Moses, I have chosen you of all mankind for My messages and My Words. Hold fast to what I have given you, and be among the grateful!’
M. Sarwar The Lord said to Moses, "I have given you distinction above the people by speaking to you and giving you My Message. Receive what I have given to you and give Us thanks."

Verse 145

Abdel Haleem We inscribed everything for him in the Tablets which taught and explained everything, saying, ‘Hold on to them firmly and urge your people to hold fast to their excellent teachings. I will show you the end of those who rebel.
Yusuf Ali And We ordained laws for him in the tablets in all matters, both commanding and explaining all things, (and said): "Take and hold these with firmness, and enjoin thy people to hold fast by the best in the precepts: soon shall I show you the homes of the wicked,- (How they lie desolate)."
W. Khan And We wrote for him upon the Tablets an admonition and details of all things, then [bade him], ‘Hold fast to them; and command your people to follow them in their best sense. Soon I shall show you the home of the wicked.
M. Sarwar We wrote advice and laws for him on Tablets about all kinds of things, saying, "Follow them and command your people to follow the good advice therein, and I will show you the dwellings of the evil-doers."

Verse 146

Abdel Haleem I will keep distracted from My signs those who behave arrogantly on Earth without any right, and who, even if they see every sign, will not believe in them; they will not take the way of right guidance if they see it, but will take the way of error if they see that. This is because they denied Our signs and paid them no heed:
Yusuf Ali Those who behave arrogantly on the earth in defiance of right - them will I turn away from My signs: Even if they see all the signs, they will not believe in them; and if they see the way of right conduct, they will not adopt it as the way; but if they see the way of error, that is the way they will adopt. For they have rejected our signs, and failed to take warning from them.
W. Khan I will turn away from My signs all those who are arrogant in the land without any right, so that even if they see all the signs they will not believe in them. If they see the right path, they shall not walk upon it: but if they see the path of error, they shall choose it for their path, because they have given the lie to Our signs and paid no heed to them.
M. Sarwar We will deprive those who are wrongly proud in the land of the blessing of revelations. Even if they would see all kinds of miracles, they would not have faith, or even to see the right path, they would not follow it. They would follow the rebellious way if they were to find one; in their ignorance, they have called Our revelations mere lies.

Verse 147

Abdel Haleem the deeds of those who denied Our signs and the Meeting of the Hereafter will come to nothing- why should they be repaid for anything other than what they have done?’
Yusuf Ali Those who reject Our signs and the meeting in the Hereafter,- vain are their deeds: Can they expect to be rewarded except as they have wrought?
W. Khan The actions of those who denied Our signs and the Meeting of the Hereafter will come to nothing—they shall be requited only, according to their deeds.’
M. Sarwar The deeds of those who have called Our revelations and belief in the Day of Judgment mere lies, will be turned devoid of all virtue. Can they expect to receive a reward for their deeds other than that which is the result of their deeds?

Verse 148

Abdel Haleem In his absence, Moses’ people took to worshipping a mere shape that made sounds like a cow- a calf made from their jewellery. Could they not see that it did not speak to them or guide them in any way? Yet they took it for worship: they were evildoers.
Yusuf Ali The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong.
W. Khan In his absence, the people of Moses made a calf from their ornaments, an image which made a lowing sound. Could they not see that it did not speak to them or guide them in any way? Yet they took to worshipping it: they were evil-doers.
M. Sarwar In Moses' absence, his people manufactured a hollow sounding calf out of their ornaments. Could they not see that it could not speak to them or provide them with any guidance? They gained only evil by worshipping the calf.

Verse 149

Abdel Haleem When, with much wringing of hands, they perceived that they were doing wrong, they said, ‘If our Lord does not have mercy and forgive us, we shall be the losers.’
Yusuf Ali When they repented, and saw that they had erred, they said: "If our Lord have not mercy upon us and forgive us, we shall indeed be of those who perish."
W. Khan When they were afflicted with remorse, and realized that they had indeed gone astray, they said, ‘If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we shall be among the lost.’
M. Sarwar When they found that they had believed in the wrong thing, they regretfully said, "If our Lord will not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will certainly be lost."

Verse 150

Abdel Haleem On his return to his people, angry and aggrieved, Moses said, ‘How foul and evil is what you have done in my absence! Were you so keen to bring your Lord’s judgement forward?’ He threw the tablets down and seized his brother by the hair, pulling him towards him. Aaron said, ‘Son of my mother, these people overpowered me! They almost killed me! Do not give my enemies reason to rejoice! Do not include me with these evildoers!’
Yusuf Ali When Moses came back to his people, angry and grieved, he said: "Evil it is that ye have done in my place in my absence: did ye make haste to bring on the judgment of your Lord?" He put down the tablets, seized his brother by (the hair of) his head, and dragged him to him. Aaron said: "Son of my mother! the people did indeed reckon me as naught, and went near to slaying me! Make not the enemies rejoice over my misfortune, nor count thou me amongst the people of sin."
W. Khan When Moses returned to his people in anger and great sorrow, he said, ‘What an awful sin you have committed in my absence. Did you want to hasten your Lord’s command?’ He threw down the Tablets and seized his brother by the head, pulling him towards himself. Aaron said, ‘Son of my mother, the people oppressed me and almost killed me. Do not give my enemies cause to gloat over me. Do not number me among the wrongdoers.’
M. Sarwar When Moses returned to his people with anger and sorrow, he said, "What you have done in my absence is certainly evil. Why were you hasty about the commandments of your Lord?" He threw away the Tablets (which contained the commandments of God), grabbed his brother and started to pull him to himself. His brother begged him saying, "Son of my mother, the people suppressed me and almost killed me. Do not humiliate me before the enemies or call me unjust".

Verse 151

Abdel Haleem Moses said, ‘My Lord, forgive me and my brother; accept us into Your mercy: You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.
Yusuf Ali Moses prayed: "O my Lord! forgive me and my brother! admit us to Thy mercy! for Thou art the Most Merciful of those who show mercy!"
W. Khan He said, ‘My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us to Your mercy. You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’
M. Sarwar Moses prayed, "Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy; you are the most Merciful."

Verse 152

Abdel Haleem Those who took to worshipping the calf will be afflicted by their Lord’s wrath, and by disgrace in this life.’ This is the way We repay those who invent such falsehoods,
Yusuf Ali Those who took the calf (for worship) will indeed be overwhelmed with wrath from their Lord, and with shame in this life: thus do We recompense those who invent (falsehoods).
W. Khan Those who took to worshipping the calf will be afflicted by their Lord’s wrath, and be disgraced in the life of this world. This is the way We requite those who invent falsehoods.
M. Sarwar (The Lord said), "Those who worshipped the calf will be afflicted by the wrath of their Lord and disgraced in their worldly life. Thus, We will recompense those who invent falsehood.

Verse 153

Abdel Haleem but your Lord is most forgiving and most merciful towards those who do wrong, then repent afterwards and truly believe.
Yusuf Ali But those who do wrong but repent thereafter and (truly) believe,- verily thy Lord is thereafter Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan As for those who committed evils, and thereafter repented and believed, they shall find your Lord forgiving and merciful.
M. Sarwar To those who commit bad deeds, but, then, repent and believe (in God), Your Lord will certainly be All-forgiving and All-merciful."

Verse 154

Abdel Haleem When Moses’ anger abated, he picked up the Tablets, on which were inscribed guidance and mercy for those who stood in awe of their Lord.
Yusuf Ali When the anger of Moses was appeased, he took up the tablets: in the writing thereon was guidance and Mercy for such as fear their Lord.
W. Khan When his anger had subsided, Moses took up the Tablets upon which was inscribed a pledge of guidance and mercy for those who fear their Lord.
M. Sarwar When Moses' anger calmed down, he collected the Tablets. On one of them was written, "God's mercy and guidance are for those who have fear of Him."

Verse 155

Abdel Haleem Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment, and when they were seized by trembling, he prayed, ‘My Lord, if You had chosen to do so, You could have destroyed them long before this, and me too, so will You now destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is only a trial from You- through it, You cause whoever You will to stray and guide whoever You will- and You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best of those who forgive.
Yusuf Ali And Moses chose seventy of his people for Our place of meeting: when they were seized with violent quaking, he prayed: "O my Lord! if it had been Thy will Thou couldst have destroyed, long before, both them and me: wouldst Thou destroy us for the deeds of the foolish ones among us? this is no more than Thy trial: by it Thou causest whom Thou wilt to stray, and Thou leadest whom Thou wilt into the right path. Thou art our Protector: so forgive us and give us Thy mercy; for Thou art the best of those who forgive.
W. Khan And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment. When they were seized with violent quaking, he prayed, ‘O my Lord! If it had been Your will, You could have destroyed both them and me long ago. But would You destroy us for the deeds of the foolish ones among us? This is no more than Your trial: by it You cause whom You will to stray, and You lead whom You will to the right path. You are our Protector. Forgive us, therefore, and have mercy on us, for You are the best of those who forgive.
M. Sarwar Moses selected seventy men from his people to attend Our appointment. (In Our presence). When an earthquake jolted them to death, Moses said, "Lord, had You wanted to destroy them, why did You not destroy them and me before. Are You destroying us for what the fools among us have done? This (destruction) is only a trial through which You cause some to go astray and guide others. You are our Guardian. Forgive us and have mercy on us; You are the best of those who forgive.

Verse 156

Abdel Haleem Grant us good things in this world and in the life to come. We turn to You.’ God said, ‘I bring My punishment on whoever I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. ‘I shall ordain My mercy for those who are conscious of God and pay the prescribed alms; who believe in Our Revelations;
Yusuf Ali "And ordain for us that which is good, in this life and in the Hereafter: for we have turned unto Thee." He said: "With My punishment I visit whom I will; but My mercy extendeth to all things. That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who do right, and practise regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs;-
W. Khan Grant us good things, both in this life and in the hereafter. To You alone we turn.’ He replied, ‘As for My punishment, I smite with it anyone I will. But My mercy encompasses all things. I shall prescribe it for those who do their duty, pay the zakat and who believe in Our signs.
M. Sarwar "Grant us well-being in this life and in the life hereafter for we have turned ourselves to You." The Lord replied, "My torment only afflicts those whom I want to punish, but My mercy encompasses all things. I shall grant mercy to those who maintain piety, pay their religious tax, and those who have faith in Our revelations."

Verse 157

Abdel Haleem who follow the Messenger- the unlettered prophet they find described in the Torah that is with them, and in the Gospel- who commands them to do right and forbids them to do wrong, who makes good things lawful to them and bad things unlawful, and relieves them of their burdens, and the iron collars that were on them. So it is those who believe him, honour and help him, and who follow the light which has been sent down with him, who will succeed.’
Yusuf Ali "Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,- it is they who will prosper."
W. Khan Also for those who follow the Messenger—the unlettered prophet they find described in the Torah that is with them, and in the Gospel—who commands them to do right and forbids them to do wrong, who makes good things lawful to them and bad things unlawful, who will relieve them of their burdens and of the shackles that weigh upon them. Those that believe in him and honour him, those that aid him and follow the light sent down with him, shall surely triumph.’
M. Sarwar There are those who follow the Messengers, the illiterate Prophet (not conventionally educated), whose description they find written in the Torah and the Gospel. [He (the Messengers) enjoins them to do good and forbids them to do all that is unlawful, makes lawful for them all that is pure and unlawful all that is filthy, removes their burdens and the entanglements in which they are involved]. Those who believe in him, honor and help him, and follow the light which is sent down to him, will have everlasting happiness.

Verse 158

Abdel Haleem Say [Muhammad], ‘People, I am the Messenger of God to you all, from Him who has control over the heavens and the earth. There is no God but Him; He gives life and death, so believe in God and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet who believes in God and His words, and follow him so that you may find guidance.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "O men! I am sent unto you all, as the Messenger of Allah, to Whom belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth: there is no god but He: it is He That giveth both life and death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, who believeth in Allah and His words: follow him that (so) ye may be guided."
W. Khan Say, ‘People, I am God’s Messenger to you all, He has sovereignty over the heavens and the earth. There is no god but Him. He ordains life and death, so believe in God and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet who believes in God and His words. Follow him so that you may be rightly guided.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them, "People, I have come to you all as the Messengers of God, to whom the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs. There is no God but He. In His hands are life and death. Have faith in God and His Messengers, the unlettered Prophet who believes in God and His words. Follow him so that you will perhaps have guidance."

Verse 159

Abdel Haleem There is a group among the people of Moses who guide with truth, and who act justly according to it.
Yusuf Ali Of the people of Moses there is a section who guide and do justice in the light of truth.
W. Khan Yet there is a group among the people of Moses who guide with truth and act justly in accordance with it.
M. Sarwar Among the people of Moses are some whose guidance and Judgment are based on the Truth.

Verse 160

Abdel Haleem We divided them into twelve tribes [as distinct] communities, and, when his people asked him for water, inspired Moses to strike the rock with his staff [so that] twelve springs gushed out. Each tribe knew its own drinking place; We gave them the shade of clouds and sent down to them manna and quails [saying], ‘Eat the good things We have provided for you.’ They did not wrong Us; it was themselves they wronged.
Yusuf Ali We divided them into twelve tribes or nations. We directed Moses by inspiration, when his (thirsty) people asked him for water: "Strike the rock with thy staff": out of it there gushed forth twelve springs: Each group knew its own place for water. We gave them the shade of clouds, and sent down to them manna and quails, (saying): "Eat of the good things We have provided for you": (but they rebelled); to Us they did no harm, but they harmed their own souls.
W. Khan We divided them up into twelve tribes, each a whole community, and We revealed Our will to Moses, when his people asked for water, saying, ‘Strike the rock with your staff.’ Twelve springs gushed from it and each tribe knew its drinking place. We caused the clouds to draw their shadow over them and sent down for them manna and quails, saying, ‘Eat the good things We have given you.’ They did not wrong Us; rather it was themselves they wronged.
M. Sarwar We divided the descendants of Israel into twelve tribes and told Moses to strike the rock with his staff to let twelve fountains gush out therefrom; his people had asked him to supply them with water. The twelve flowing springs were divided among them (a spring for each tribe) and each tribe knew its drinking place well. We provided them with shade from the clouds, sent down manna and quails to them for food, and told them to eat the pure things which We had given them. They did not do injustice to Us but they wronged themselves.

Verse 161

Abdel Haleem When they were told, ‘Enter this town and eat freely there as you will, but say, “Relieve us!” and enter its gate humbly: then We shall forgive you your sins, and increase the reward of those who do good,’
Yusuf Ali And remember it was said to them: "Dwell in this town and eat therein as ye wish, but say the word of humility and enter the gate in a posture of humility: We shall forgive you your faults; We shall increase (the portion of) those who do good."
W. Khan When they were told, ‘Settle down in the town and eat wherever you wish in it, and pray for forgiveness and enter the gate in humility: We shall forgive you your sins and shall bestow further favours upon those who do good,’
M. Sarwar When they were told, "Settle down in this town, eat as you wish, seek forgiveness and enter the gate prostrating yourselves (in obedience to the Lord) and We will forgive you your sins and increase the reward of the righteous people,

Verse 162

Abdel Haleem the wrongdoers among them substituted another saying for that which had been given them, so We sent them a punishment from heaven for their wrongdoing.
Yusuf Ali But the transgressors among them changed the word from that which had been given them so we sent on them a plague from heaven. For that they repeatedly transgressed.
W. Khan the transgressors among them substituted something else for the word they had been given. So We sent them a punishment from heaven for their wrongdoing.
M. Sarwar the unjust among them changed the words which they were told to say (in the prayer). Therefore, We sent upon them torment from the sky for their wrong deeds.

Verse 163

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], ask them about the town by the sea; how its people broke the Sabbath when their fish surfaced for them only on that day, never on weekdays- We tested them in this way: because of their disobedience-
Yusuf Ali Ask them concerning the town standing close by the sea. Behold! they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. For on the day of their Sabbath their fish did come to them, openly holding up their heads, but on the day they had no Sabbath, they came not: thus did We make a trial of them, for they were given to transgression.
W. Khan Ask them about the town which was by the sea and what befell its people when they broke the Sabbath. On their Sabbath the fish came to them near the surface, but on week-days they never came near them—thus We tried them because of their disobedience.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), ask them about the (people of the) towns on the seashore. They had transgressed by catching fish on the Sabbath. Each Sabbath the fish came openly within their reach but not so on other days. Thus, We were testing them because of their evil deeds.

Verse 164

Abdel Haleem how, when some of them asked [their preachers], ‘Why do you bother preaching to people God will destroy, or at least punish severely?’ [the preachers] answered, ‘In order to be free from your Lord’s blame, and so that they may perhaps take heed.’
Yusuf Ali When some of them said: "Why do ye preach to a people whom Allah will destroy or visit with a terrible punishment?"- said the preachers:" To discharge our duty to your Lord, and perchance they may fear Him."
W. Khan When some of them asked, ‘Why do you admonish a people whom God is going to destroy or to afflict with a severe punishment?’ They answered, ‘In order to be free from blame before your Lord, and that they may perhaps fear Him.’
M. Sarwar When a group of them questioned another group saying, "Why do you preach to those whom God has decided to destroy or punish by a severe torment?" they replied, "We preach to them for we are responsible in the sight of your Lord and so that perhaps they may have fear of God."

Verse 165

Abdel Haleem When they ignored [the warning] they were given, We saved those who forbade evil, and punished the wrongdoers severely because of their disobedience.
Yusuf Ali When they disregarded the warnings that had been given them, We rescued those who forbade Evil; but We visited the wrong-doers with a grievous punishment because they were given to transgression.
W. Khan Therefore when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who had tried to prevent the doing of evil. And We meted out a severe punishment to the transgressors because they were rebellious.
M. Sarwar When they (the unjust people) forgot what was preached to them, We saved the preachers from evil and afflicted the unjust for their evil deeds, with a dreadful torment.

Verse 166

Abdel Haleem When, in their arrogance, they persisted in doing what they had been forbidden to do, We said to them, ‘Be like apes! Be outcasts!’
Yusuf Ali When in their insolence they transgressed (all) prohibitions, We said to them: "Be ye apes, despised and rejected."
W. Khan And then, when they disdainfully persisted in doing what they had been forbidden to do, We said to them, ‘Be as apes, despised!’
M. Sarwar When they crossed the limit of the prohibition, We made them turn into detested apes.

Verse 167

Abdel Haleem And then your Lord declared that, until the Day of Resurrection, He would send people against them to inflict terrible suffering on them. Your Lord is swift in punishment but He is most forgiving and merciful.
Yusuf Ali Behold! thy Lord did declare that He would send against them, to the Day of Judgment, those who would afflict them with grievous penalty. Thy Lord is quick in retribution, but He is also Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan Then your Lord declared that, until the Day of Resurrection, He would send others against them to inflict terrible suffering on them. Your Lord is swift in retribution; yet surely He is most forgiving and merciful.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), consider, when your Lord declared to the (Israelites) His decision to raise a people above them who would make them suffer the worst kinds of torments until the Day of Judgment. Certainly your Lord's retribution is swift. He is All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Verse 168

Abdel Haleem We dispersed them over the earth in separate communities- some are righteous and some less so: We tested them with blessings and misfortunes, so that they might all return [to righteousness]-
Yusuf Ali We broke them up into sections on this earth. There are among them some that are the righteous, and some that are the opposite. We have tried them with both prosperity and adversity: In order that they might turn (to us).
W. Khan We split them up into sections on the earth. Some of them are righteous while some of them are otherwise, and We tested them with blessings and misfortunes, so that they might return to the right path.
M. Sarwar We divided them into nations on the earth; some are righteous and others are not. We tested them with well-being and hardship so that they might return (to the right path).

Verse 169

Abdel Haleem and they were succeeded by generations who, although they inherited the Scripture, took the fleeting gains of this lower world, saying, ‘We shall be forgiven,’ and indeed taking them again if other such gains came their way. Was a pledge not taken from them, writ-ten in the Scripture, to say nothing but the truth about God? And they have studied its contents well. For those who are mindful of God, the Hereafter is better. ‘Why do you not use your reason?’
Yusuf Ali After them succeeded an (evil) generation: They inherited the Book, but they chose (for themselves) the vanities of this world, saying (for excuse): "(Everything) will be forgiven us." (Even so), if similar vanities came their way, they would (again) seize them. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them, that they would not ascribe to Allah anything but the truth? and they study what is in the Book. But best for the righteous is the home in the Hereafter. Will ye not understand?
W. Khan They were succeeded by generations who inherited the Scripture and took to the fleeting gains of this world, saying, ‘We shall certainly be forgiven.’ If there came to them similar fleeting gains again, they would take them. Was a pledge not taken from them, written in the Scripture, that they would not say anything but the truth about God? And they have studied whatever is in it. Surely the Home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Him. Will you not understand?
M. Sarwar Their descendants who inherited the Book gained (by bribery only) worthless things from the worldly life saying, "We shall be forgiven (for what we have done). They would have even doubled such gains if they could have received more. Did they not make a covenant (with God) in the Book not to speak any thing other than the Truth about God and to study its contents well? The life hereafter is much better for the pious ones. Will you not then think?

Verse 170

Abdel Haleem But as for those who hold fast to the Scripture and keep up the prayer, We do not deny righteous people their rewards.
Yusuf Ali As to those who hold fast by the Book and establish regular prayer,- never shall We suffer the reward of the righteous to perish.
W. Khan As for those who hold fast to the Book and are steadfast in prayer, We shall not deny the righteous their reward.
M. Sarwar Those who devote themselves to the teachings of the Book and are steadfast in prayer (should know that) the reward of those who reform themselves will not be lost.

Verse 171

Abdel Haleem When We made the mountain loom high above them like a shadow, and they thought it would fall on them, We said, ‘Hold fast to what We have given you, and remember what it contains, so that you may remain conscious of God.’
Yusuf Ali When We shook the Mount over them, as if it had been a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall on them (We said): "Hold firmly to what We have given you, and bring (ever) to remembrance what is therein; perchance ye may fear Allah."
W. Khan When We suspended the mountain over them as if it were a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall down on them, We said, ‘Hold on firmly to what We have given you and remember what is in it, so that you may remain conscious of God.’
M. Sarwar When We raised the mount above them as a shadow and made it speak to them, they thought that it would fall on them. We told them to devote themselves decisively to what was given to them and follow its guidance so that they would have fear of God.

Verse 172

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], when your Lord took out the offspring from the loins of the Children of Adam and made them bear witness about themselves, He said, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ and they replied, ‘Yes, we bear witness.’ So you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘We were not aware of this,’
Yusuf Ali When thy Lord drew forth from the Children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves, (saying): "Am I not your Lord (who cherishes and sustains you)?"- They said: "Yea! We do testify!" (This), lest ye should say on the Day of Judgment: "Of this we were never mindful":
W. Khan When your Lord brought forth offspring from the loins of the Children of Adam and made them bear witness about themselves, He said, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They replied, ‘We bear witness that You are.’ This He did, lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘We had no knowledge of that.’
M. Sarwar When your Lord asked all the offspring of Adam (before their birth), "Am I not your Lord?" All of them testified and bore witness to their testimony that on the Day of Judgment they would not say, "We were not aware of this (fact),"

Verse 173

Abdel Haleem or, ‘It was our forefathers who, before us, ascribed partners to God, and we are only the descendants who came after them: will you destroy us because of falsehoods they invented?’
Yusuf Ali Or lest ye should say: "Our fathers before us may have taken false gods, but we are (their) descendants after them: wilt Thou then destroy us because of the deeds of men who were futile?"
W. Khan Or lest you say, ‘Our forefathers associated others with God before our time, and we are only the descendants who came after them. So are You going to destroy us for what those inventors of falsehood did?’
M. Sarwar or say, "Our fathers worshipped idols before us and we as their descendants followed them. Would you then destroy us because of what the followers of falsehood have done?"

Verse 174

Abdel Haleem In this way We explain the messages, so that they may turn [to the right path].
Yusuf Ali Thus do We explain the signs in detail; and perchance they may turn (unto Us).
W. Khan We explain Our signs in detail thus, so that perhaps they may return to Us.
M. Sarwar Thus do We explain Our revelations so that they might return to (the right path).

Verse 175

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], tell them the story of the man to whom We gave Our messages: he sloughed them off, so Satan took him as his follower and he went astray-
Yusuf Ali Relate to them the story of the man to whom We sent Our signs, but he passed them by: so Satan followed him up, and he went astray.
W. Khan Recite to them the tale of the man to whom We gave Our signs, but who then cast them to one side and Satan overtook him. And he became one of those who went astray—
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), tell them the story of the person whom We inspired with Our guidance, but who detached himself from it and who was then pursued by Satan until he turned into a rebel.

Verse 176

Abdel Haleem if it had been Our will, We could have used these signs to raise him high, but instead he clung to the earth and followed his own desires- he was like a dog that pants with a lolling tongue whether you drive it away or leave it alone. Such is the image of those who reject Our signs. Tell them the story so that they may reflect.
Yusuf Ali If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires. His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.
W. Khan if it had been Our will, We could have used these signs to exalt him, but instead he clung to the earth and followed his own desires—he was like a dog that pants whether you chase it away or leave it alone. Such are those who reject Our signs. Tell them this story so that they may reflect.
M. Sarwar Had We wanted, We could have raised him to an exalted position but he clung to his earthly life and followed his own (evil) desires. Such person's bad habits are like those of a lazy dog (in a warm climate) who always has its tongue hanging out whether you chase it away or leave it alone. Such are the people who have called Our revelations mere lies. (Muhammad), tell them such stories so that perhaps they will think.

Verse 177

Abdel Haleem How foul is the image of those who reject Our signs! It is themselves they wrong:
Yusuf Ali Evil as an example are people who reject Our signs and wrong their own souls.
W. Khan How evil is the case of those who deny Our signs. They only wrong themselves:
M. Sarwar How terrible is the example of those who have rejected Our revelations and have done injustice only to themselves!

Verse 178

Abdel Haleem whoever God guides is truly guided, and whoever God allows to stray is a loser.
Yusuf Ali Whom Allah doth guide,- he is on the right path: whom He rejects from His guidance,- such are the persons who perish.
W. Khan anyone whom God guides has been rightly guided; while those He lets go astray will surely be the losers.
M. Sarwar Those whom God has guided have the true guidance, but those whom He has caused to go astray are certainly lost.

Verse 179

Abdel Haleem We have created many jinn and people who are destined for Hell, with hearts they do not use for comprehension, eyes they do not use for sight, ears they do not use for hearing. They are like cattle, no, even further astray: these are the ones who are entirely heedless.
Yusuf Ali Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).
W. Khan We created many of the jinn and mankind for hell. They have hearts they do not understand with; they have eyes they do not see with; and they have ears they do not hear with. Such people are like cattle—no, they are even more misguided. Such are the heedless.
M. Sarwar We have destined many men and jinn for hell. They have hearts but do not understand, eyes but do not see. They have ears but do not hear. They are worse than lost cattle. These are the heedless ones.

Verse 180

Abdel Haleem The Most Excellent Names belong to God: use them to call on Him, and keep away from those who abuse them- they will be requited for what they do.
Yusuf Ali The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited.
W. Khan God has the Most Excellent Names. Call on Him by His Names and keep away from those who distort them. They shall be requited for what they do.
M. Sarwar God has the most blessed Names. You should address Him in your worship by these Names and keep away from those who pervert them. They will be recompensed for their (evil) deeds.

Verse 181

Abdel Haleem Among those We created are a group of people who guide with truth and act justly according to it.
Yusuf Ali Of those We have created are people who direct (others) with truth. And dispense justice therewith.
W. Khan Of those We have created there are some who give true guidance and act justly.
M. Sarwar Among Our creatures are a group who guide and judge with the Truth.

Verse 182

Abdel Haleem But We lead on those who reject Our messages, step by step, without them realizing it:
Yusuf Ali Those who reject Our signs, We shall gradually visit with punishment, in ways they perceive not;
W. Khan We shall gradually seize those who reject Our signs from a place they do not recognize.
M. Sarwar We gradually lead those who have called Our revelations mere lies, to destruction. Their destruction will be such that they will not even notice how it seized them.

Verse 183

Abdel Haleem I will give them respite, but My plan is sure.
Yusuf Ali Respite will I grant unto them: for My scheme is strong (and unfailing).
W. Khan For though I give them rein for a while, My strategy is sure.
M. Sarwar Though I have given them a respite, My plan against them is well established.

Verse 184

Abdel Haleem Has it not occurred to them that their companion is not mad but is giving clear warning?
Yusuf Ali Do they not reflect? Their companion is not seized with madness: he is but a perspicuous warner.
W. Khan Have they not reflected that their companion is not mad? He is only a plain warner.
M. Sarwar Why will they not understand that their companion (Muhammad) is not possessed by jinn. (Muhammad) is only a (Divinely) authorized preacher.

Verse 185

Abdel Haleem Have they not contemplated the realm of the heavens and earth and all that God created, and that the end of their time might be near? What [other revelation] will they believe in if they do not believe in this?
Yusuf Ali Do they see nothing in the government of the heavens and the earth and all that Allah hath created? (Do they not see) that it may well be that their terms is nigh drawing to an end? In what message after this will they then believe?
W. Khan Have they not looked into the realms of the heavens and the earth and all that God created, and seen that the end of their time might be near? What will they believe in if they do not believe in this?
M. Sarwar Have they not considered the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything that God has created? Perhaps death approaches them. In what kind of guidance can they have faith besides that of the Quran?

Verse 186

Abdel Haleem No one can guide those God allows to stray: He leaves them blundering about in their insolence.
Yusuf Ali To such as Allah rejects from His guidance, there can be no guide: He will leave them in their trespasses, wandering in distraction.
W. Khan No one can guide those whom God lets go astray: He leaves them blundering about in their arrogance.
M. Sarwar No one can guide those whom God has caused to go astray and has left to continue blindly in their rebellion.

Verse 187

Abdel Haleem They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour, ‘When will it happen?’ Say, ‘My Lord alone has knowledge of it: He alone will reveal when its time will come, a time that is momentous in both the heavens and earth. All too suddenly it will come upon you.’ They ask you about it as if you were eager [to find out]. Say, ‘God alone has knowledge of [when it will come], though most people do not realize it.’
Yusuf Ali They ask thee about the (final) Hour - when will be its appointed time? Say: "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord (alone): None but He can reveal as to when it will occur. Heavy were its burden through the heavens and the earth. Only, all of a sudden will it come to you." They ask thee as if thou Wert eager in search thereof: Say: "The knowledge thereof is with Allah (alone), but most men know not."
W. Khan They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour of Doom, ‘When will it come?’ Say, ‘Knowledge about it rests only with my Lord; He alone will reveal when its time will come, it lies heavy on the heavens and the earth: it will suddenly overtake you.’ They will put questions to you as though you had full knowledge of it. Say, ‘Knowledge about it rests only with God, though most people do not realize it.’
M. Sarwar They ask you (Muhammad), "When will the Day of Judgment be?" Tell them, "My Lord knows best. It is He who has appointed its time. It will be a grave hour both in the heavens and the earth. It will only approach you suddenly." They say, "It seems that you know about the coming of the Day of Judgment." Tell them, "Only God knows about it and most people do not know."

Verse 188

Abdel Haleem Say [Prophet], ‘I have no control over benefit or harm, [even] to myself, except as God may please: if I had knowledge of what is hidden, I would have abundant good things and no harm could touch me. I am no more than a bearer of warning, and good news to those who believe.’
Yusuf Ali Say: "I have no power over any good or harm to myself except as Allah willeth. If I had knowledge of the unseen, I should have multiplied all good, and no evil should have touched me: I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings to those who have faith."
W. Khan Say, ‘I myself have no power to benefit or do harm, save as God pleases. If I had knowledge of the unseen, I would have availed myself of an abundance of good, and no harm would have touched me. I am but a warner and a bearer of good tidings for those who will believe.’
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), say, "I have no control over my benefits or sufferings, without the will of God. Had I known about the unseen, I would have gained much good and would have faced no suffering. I am only a warner and I preach the glad news to the believing people."

Verse 189

Abdel Haleem It is He who created you all from one soul, and from it made its mate so that he might find comfort in her: when one [of them] lies with his wife and she conceives a light burden, going about freely, then grows heavy, they both pray to God, their Lord, ‘If You give us a good child we shall certainly be grateful,’
Yusuf Ali It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her (in love). When they are united, she bears a light burden and carries it about (unnoticed). When she grows heavy, they both pray to Allah their Lord, (saying): "If Thou givest us a goodly child, we vow we shall (ever) be grateful."
W. Khan It was He who created you from a single soul, and from it made its mate so that he may find comfort in her. Once he has covered her, she conceives and goes about with a light burden. When it grows heavy, they both call to God, their Lord, ‘If You bestow on us a healthy child, we will surely be grateful,’
M. Sarwar It is God Who created you from a single soul and out of it made its spouse to bring it comfort. When he (man) engaged in carnal relations with her, she conceived a light burden which she had to carry. When the baby grew in her womb, they (husband and wife) both prayed to their Lord, "If You grant us a healthy son we shall certainly give you thanks."

Verse 190

Abdel Haleem and yet when He gives them a good child they ascribe some of what He has granted them to others.
Yusuf Ali But when He giveth them a goodly child, they ascribe to others a share in the gift they have received: but Allah is exalted high above the partners they ascribe to Him.
W. Khan yet when He grants them a healthy child, they begin to ascribe to others a share in the gift they have received. But God is far above what they associate with Him!
M. Sarwar When they were given a healthy son, they began to love him as much as they loved God. God is too exalted to be loved equally to anything else.

Verse 191

Abdel Haleem God is far above the partners they set up alongside Him! How can they set up with Him these partners that create nothing and are themselves created,
Yusuf Ali Do they indeed ascribe to Him as partners things that can create nothing, but are themselves created?
W. Khan Do they associate with Him those who create nothing and are themselves created?
M. Sarwar Do they (the pagans) consider things that do not create anything but are themselves created equal to God?

Verse 192

Abdel Haleem that cannot help them at all, or even help themselves?
Yusuf Ali No aid can they give them, nor can they aid themselves!
W. Khan They can give them no help, nor can they help themselves.
M. Sarwar The idols are things that are not able to help others or even themselves.

Verse 193

Abdel Haleem If you [believers] call such people to guidance, they do not fol-low you: it makes no difference whether you call them or remain silent.
Yusuf Ali If ye call them to guidance, they will not obey: For you it is the same whether ye call them or ye hold your peace!
W. Khan It makes no difference whether you call on them or remain silent. If you call them to the right path, they will not follow you.
M. Sarwar Believers, even if you invite them to true guidance, they will not follow you. It makes no difference whether you invite them or whether you keep quiet.

Verse 194

Abdel Haleem Those you [idolaters] call upon instead of God are created beings like you. Call upon them, then, and let them respond to you if what you say is true.
Yusuf Ali Verily those whom ye call upon besides Allah are servants like unto you: Call upon them, and let them listen to your prayer, if ye are (indeed) truthful!
W. Khan Those whom you call on besides God are but creatures like yourselves. Call upon them, then, and let them respond to you, if what you say is true.
M. Sarwar Those whom you (pagans) worship besides God, are themselves servants just like yourselves. If your claim was true, they should answer your prayers.

Verse 195

Abdel Haleem Do they have feet to walk, hands to strike, eyes to see, or ears to hear? Say [Prophet], ‘Call on your “partners”! Scheme against me! Do not spare me!
Yusuf Ali Have they feet to walk with? Or hands to lay hold with? Or eyes to see with? Or ears to hear with? Say: "Call your 'god-partners', scheme (your worst) against me, and give me no respite!
W. Khan Have they feet to walk with? Have they hands to hold with? Have they eyes to see with? Have they ears to hear with? Say, ‘Call upon those you associate with God as partners, then all of you contrive against me and give me no respite.
M. Sarwar Do they (the idols) have feet to walk, hands to hold things, eyes to see, and ears to hear? (Muhammad), tell them (the pagans) to call on their idols for help and to plan against Me without delay.

Verse 196

Abdel Haleem My protector is God: He has revealed the Scripture, and it is He who protects the righteous,
Yusuf Ali "For my Protector is Allah, Who revealed the Book (from time to time), and He will choose and befriend the righteous.
W. Khan My protector is God who sent down the Book, for it is He who protects the righteous.
M. Sarwar The (true) Guardian is certainly God who has revealed the Book and is the Guardian of the righteous ones.

Verse 197

Abdel Haleem but those you call on instead of Him cannot help you or even help themselves.’
Yusuf Ali "But those ye call upon besides Him, are unable to help you, and indeed to help themselves."
W. Khan Those whom you call on besides Him have no power to help you, nor can they help themselves.’
M. Sarwar The idols which you (the pagans) worship besides God can neither help you nor themselves.

Verse 198

Abdel Haleem If you [believers] call such people to guidance, they do not hear. You [Prophet] may observe them looking at you, but they can-not see.
Yusuf Ali If thou callest them to guidance, they hear not. Thou wilt see them looking at thee, but they see not.
W. Khan If you call them to the right path, they will not hear you. You find them looking towards you, but they do not see you.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), if you invite them to the right guidance, they will not listen to you. You will see them looking at you but they do not really see.

Verse 199

Abdel Haleem Be tolerant and command what is right: pay no attention to foolish people.
Yusuf Ali Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; But turn away from the ignorant.
W. Khan Be tolerant; enjoin what is right; and avoid the ignorant.
M. Sarwar Have forgiveness, preach the truth, and keep away from the ignorant ones.

Verse 200

Abdel Haleem If Satan should prompt you to do something, seek refuge with God- He is all hearing, all knowing-
Yusuf Ali If a suggestion from Satan assail thy (mind), seek refuge with Allah; for He heareth and knoweth (all things).
W. Khan If an evil impulse from Satan provokes you, seek refuge with God; He is all hearing, and all knowing.
M. Sarwar If Satan will try to seduce you, seek refuge from God. God is All-hearing and All-knowing.

Verse 201

Abdel Haleem those who are aware of God think of Him when Satan prompts them to do something and immediately they can see [straight];
Yusuf Ali Those who fear Allah, when a thought of evil from Satan assaults them, bring Allah to remembrance, when lo! they see (aright)!
W. Khan When any evil suggestion from Satan touches those who fear God, they are instantly alerted and become watchful;
M. Sarwar When a satanic thought starts to bother the pious ones, they understand and see the light

Verse 202

Abdel Haleem the followers of devils are led relentlessly into error by them and cannot stop.
Yusuf Ali But their brethren (the evil ones) plunge them deeper into error, and never relax (their efforts).
W. Khan but the followers of devils are led relentlessly into error by them. They never desist.
M. Sarwar while their brethren ceaselessly try to drag them into error.

Verse 203

Abdel Haleem When you do not bring them a fresh revelation, they say, ‘But can you not just ask for one?’ Say, ‘I merely repeat what is revealed to me from my Lord: this revelation brings you insights from your Lord, and guidance and mercy for those who believe,
Yusuf Ali If thou bring them not a revelation, they say: "Why hast thou not got it together?" Say: "I but follow what is revealed to me from my Lord: this is (nothing but) lights from your Lord, and Guidance, and mercy, for any who have faith."
W. Khan When you do not bring them a sign, they say, ‘Why do you not invent one?’ Say, ‘I follow only what is revealed to me by my Lord. This Book is an enlightenment from your Lord and a guide and mercy to true believers.
M. Sarwar If you , (Muhammad), do not show them a miracle, they will keep on insisting that you must show them one. Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This (Quran) contains wisdom for you from your Lord. It contains guidance and mercy for those who have faith.

Verse 204

Abdel Haleem so pay attention and listen quietly when the Quran is recited, so that you may be given mercy.’
Yusuf Ali When the Qur'an is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy.
W. Khan When the Quran is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace, so that you may receive mercy.
M. Sarwar Whenever the Quran is recited (to you), listen to it quietly so that you may receive mercy.

Verse 205

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], remember your Lord inwardly, in all humility and awe, without raising your voice, in the mornings and in the evenings- do not be one of the heedless-
Yusuf Ali And do thou (O reader!) Bring thy Lord to remembrance in thy (very) soul, with humility and in reverence, without loudness in words, in the mornings and evenings; and be not thou of those who are unheedful.
W. Khan Remember your Lord deep in your very soul, in all humility and awe, without raising your voice, morning and evening—do not be one of the heedless—
M. Sarwar Remember your Lord deep within yourselves, humbly and privately - instead of shouting out loud - (in prayer) in the mornings and evenings and do not be of the heedless ones.

Verse 206

Abdel Haleem [even] those who live in the presence of your Lord are not too proud to worship Him: they glorify Him and bow down before Him.
Yusuf Ali Those who are near to thy Lord, disdain not to do Him worship: They celebrate His praises, and prostrate before Him.
W. Khan [even] the ones [angels] who live in the presence of your Lord are not too proud to worship Him: they glorify Him and prostrate themselves before Him.
M. Sarwar Those who are near to your Lord do not disdain from worshipping Him. They glorify Him and prostrate themselves (in obedience to Him).
