The Qurʾān

Chapter 71

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem We sent Noah to his people: ‘Warn your people, before a painful punishment comes to them.’
Yusuf Ali We sent Noah to his People (with the Command): "Do thou warn thy People before there comes to them a grievous Penalty."
W. Khan We sent Noah forth to his people, saying, ‘Warn your people before there comes upon them a grievous punishment.’
M. Sarwar We sent Noah to his people telling him, "Warn your people before a painful torment approaches them".

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem And so he said, ‘My people, I am here to warn you plainly.
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my People! I am to you a Warner, clear and open:
W. Khan [Noah] said, ‘My people! I am but a plain warner to you,
M. Sarwar Noah said, "My people, I am warning you plainly.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem Serve God, be mindful of Him and obey me.
Yusuf Ali "That ye should worship Allah, fear Him and obey me:
W. Khan that you should worship God [alone] and be conscious of Him. Pay heed to me.
M. Sarwar Worship God, have fear of Him and obey me.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem He will forgive you your sins and spare you until your appointed time––when God’s appointed time arrives it cannot be postponed. If only you understood!’
Yusuf Ali "So He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a stated Term: for when the Term given by Allah is accomplished, it cannot be put forward: if ye only knew."
W. Khan He will forgive your sins and will grant you respite till an appointed time. When the time appointed by God arrives, it cannot be postponed, if you only knew.’
M. Sarwar He will forgive your sins and give you a respite for an appointed time. When the time which God has appointed arrives, none will be able to postpone it. Would that you knew this!"

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem He said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day,
Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! I have called to my People night and day:
W. Khan He said, ‘My Lord! I have called my people night and day
M. Sarwar Noah said, "My Lord, I have been preaching to my people, night and day,

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem but the more I call them, the further they run away:
Yusuf Ali "But my call only increases (their) flight (from the Right).
W. Khan but my pleas have only increased their aversion.
M. Sarwar but it has had no effect on them except to make them run away.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem every time I call them, so that You may forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, cover their heads with their garments, persist in their rejection, and grow more insolent and arrogant.
Yusuf Ali "And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them, they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance.
W. Khan Every time I have called to them, so that You might forgive them, they have only thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance.
M. Sarwar Evert time I invite them to Your (guidance) so that You can forgive them, they put their fingers into their ears, cover their heads with their clothes, persist in their disbelief and display extreme arrogance.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem I have tried calling them openly.
Yusuf Ali "So I have called to them aloud;
W. Khan Then I called them openly,
M. Sarwar "I preached to them aloud, in public.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem I have tried preaching to them in public and speaking to them in private.
Yusuf Ali "Further I have spoken to them in public and secretly in private,
W. Khan and spoke to them in public and in private.’
M. Sarwar Then I conveyed the message to them, again, both in public and in private,

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord: He is ever forgiving.
Yusuf Ali "Saying, 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving;
W. Khan Then I said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Surely He is the most forgiving.
M. Sarwar and told them, "Ask forgiveness from your Lord; He is All-forgiving".

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem He will send down abundant rain from the sky for you;
Yusuf Ali "'He will send rain to you in abundance;
W. Khan He will send down abundant rain from the sky for you,
M. Sarwar He will send you abundant

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem He will give you wealth and sons; He will provide you with gardens and rivers.
Yusuf Ali "'Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water).
W. Khan increase your wealth and sons; and grant you gardens and waterways.
M. Sarwar rain from the sky,

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem What is the matter with you? Why will you not fear God’s majesty,
Yusuf Ali "'What is the matter with you, that ye place not your hope for kindness and long-suffering in Allah,-
W. Khan What is the matter with you that you deny the greatness of God,
M. Sarwar strengthen you by (providing) you wealth and children, and make gardens and streams for you. What is the matter with you that you are not afraid of the greatness of God

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem when He has created you stage by stage?
Yusuf Ali "'Seeing that it is He that has created you in diverse stages?
W. Khan when He has created you through different stages of existence?
M. Sarwar who has created you in several stages?

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem Have you ever wondered how God created seven heavens, one above the other,
Yusuf Ali "'See ye not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another,
W. Khan Do you not see how God has created the seven heavens one above another,
M. Sarwar "Have you not seen that God has created the seven heavens one above the other

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem placed the moon as a light in them and the sun as a lamp,
Yusuf Ali "'And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious) Lamp?
W. Khan and made the moon therein a light, and made the sun a lamp,
M. Sarwar and placed therein the moon as a light

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem how God made you spring forth from the earth like a plant,
Yusuf Ali "'And Allah has produced you from the earth growing (gradually),
W. Khan how God has produced you from the earth and caused you to grow,
M. Sarwar and the sun as a torch.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem how He will return you into it and then bring you out again,
Yusuf Ali "'And in the End He will return you into the (earth), and raise you forth (again at the Resurrection)?
W. Khan how He will then return you to it and bring you forth again,
M. Sarwar God made you grow from the earth.* He will make you return to it and then take you out of it again.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem and how He has spread the Earth out for you
Yusuf Ali "'And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out),
W. Khan how God has spread the earth out for you
M. Sarwar God has spread out the earth

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem to walk along its spacious paths?” ’
Yusuf Ali "'That ye may go about therein, in spacious roads.'"
W. Khan so that you may walk along its spacious paths?’
M. Sarwar for you, so that you may walk along its wide roads".

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem Noah said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose riches and children only increase their ruin;
Yusuf Ali Noah said: "O my Lord! They have disobeyed me, but they follow (men) whose wealth and children give them no increase but only Loss.
W. Khan Noah supplicated, ‘Lord, they have disobeyed me, and followed those whose wealth and children have only added to their ruin;
M. Sarwar Noah said, "Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose wealth and children will only bring about destruction for them.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem who have made a grand plan,
Yusuf Ali "And they have devised a tremendous Plot.
W. Khan and they have hatched a mighty plot,
M. Sarwar They have arrogantly plotted evil plans against me,

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem saying, “Do not renounce your gods!
Yusuf Ali "And they have said (to each other), 'Abandon not your gods: Abandon neither Wadd nor Suwa', neither Yaguth nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr';-
W. Khan and they said [to their followers], “Do not ever abandon your deities: abandon neither Wadd, nor Suwa‘, and neither Yaghuth, nor Yauq nor Nasr!”
M. Sarwar and have said to each other, 'Do not give-up your idols. Do not renounce Wadd, Suwa`, Yaghuth, Ya`uq and Nasr (names of certain idols).

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem Do not renounce Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Yauq, or Nasr!” They have led many astray. Lord, bring nothing but destruction down on the evildoers!’
Yusuf Ali "They have already misled many; and grant Thou no increase to the wrong-doers but in straying (from their mark)."
W. Khan They have led many astray; so lead the wrongdoers to further error.’
M. Sarwar They have misled many and the unjust will achieve nothing but more error".

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem They were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings: they found no one to help them against God.
Yusuf Ali Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found- in lieu of Allah- none to help them.
W. Khan They were drowned and sent to Hell for their misdeeds; they found no one to help them against God.
M. Sarwar Because of their sins, they were drowned and made to enter hell. They could find no one to help them besides God.

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem And Noah said, ‘Lord, do not leave any of the disbelievers on the earth-
Yusuf Ali And Noah, said: "O my Lord! Leave not of the Unbelievers, a single one on earth!
W. Khan Noah prayed, ‘O my Lord! Do not leave on earth a single one of those who deny the truth—
M. Sarwar Noah said, "Lord, do not leave a single disbeliever on earth;

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem if you leave them they will lead Your servants astray and beget only sinners and disbelievers-
Yusuf Ali "For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy devotees, and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones.
W. Khan if You leave any, they will misguide Your servants, and they will beget none but sinners and deniers of truth—
M. Sarwar if You do, they will mislead Your servants and will only give birth to ungrateful sinners.

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Lord, forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer. Forgive believing men and women but bring nothing but ruin down on the evildoers!’
Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in Faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrong-doers grant Thou no increase but in perdition!"
W. Khan Lord! Forgive me and my parents and every true believer who enters my house, forgive all the believing men and believing upon the wrongdoers except in women; and bestow no increase ruin?
M. Sarwar Lord, forgive me, my parents, the believers who have entered my home and all believing men and women. Give nothing to the unjust but destruction.
