The Qurʾān

Chapter 73: al-Muzzammil

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem You [Prophet], enfolded in your cloak!
Yusuf Ali O thou folded in garments!
W. Khan O you who are wrapped up in half the night or a little less than your mantle,
M. Sarwar You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem Stay up throughout the night, all but a small part of it,
Yusuf Ali Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,-
W. Khan stand up to pray that
M. Sarwar worship (God) for a few hours at night.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem half, or a little less,
Yusuf Ali Half of it,- or a little less,
W. Khan or a little more, but recite for much of the night.
M. Sarwar (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem or a little more; recite the Quran slowly and distinctly:
Yusuf Ali Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.
W. Khan It may be the Quran slowly and distinctly.
M. Sarwar and recite the Quran in a distinct tone;

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem We shall send a momentous message down to you.
Yusuf Ali Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message.
W. Khan For We are about to send down to you a message of considerable gravity.
M. Sarwar We are about to reveal to you a mighty word.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem Night prayer makes a deeper impression and sharpens words––
Yusuf Ali Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise).
W. Khan Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer].
M. Sarwar Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent.

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem you are kept busy for long periods of the day––
Yusuf Ali True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties:
W. Khan You have by day prolonged occupations [with Dawah work].
M. Sarwar During the day, you are preoccupied with many activities.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem so celebrate the name of your Lord and devote yourself wholeheart-edly to Him.
Yusuf Ali But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly.
W. Khan Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly.
M. Sarwar Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem He is Lord of the east and west, there is no god but Him, so take Him as your Protector,
Yusuf Ali (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs.
W. Khan He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian.
M. Sarwar He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem patiently endure what they say, ignore them politely,
Yusuf Ali And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity).
W. Khan Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely.
M. Sarwar Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem and leave to Me those who deny the truth and live in luxury. Bear with them for a little while;
Yusuf Ali And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while.
W. Khan Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer.
M. Sarwar Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while;

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem We have fetters, a blazing fire,
Yusuf Ali With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them),
W. Khan We have in store for them heavy fetters and a blazing Fire,
M. Sarwar We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire,

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem food that chokes, and agonizing torment in store for them
Yusuf Ali And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous.
W. Khan food that chokes and painful punishment
M. Sarwar food which chokes (them), and a painful torment.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem on the Day when the earth and the mountains will shake. The mountains will become a heap of loose sand.
Yusuf Ali One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down.
W. Khan on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes.
M. Sarwar On that day, the earth and the mountains will be violently shaken, and the mountains will be turned into heaps of moving sand.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem We have sent a messenger to you [people] to be your witness, just as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh,
Yusuf Ali We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh.
W. Khan We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you.
M. Sarwar We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem but Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger and so We inflicted a heavy punishment on him.
Yusuf Ali But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment.
W. Khan But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip.
M. Sarwar However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem So if you disbelieve, how can you guard yourselves against a Day that will turn children’s hair grey,
Yusuf Ali Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?-
W. Khan If you persist in denying the truth how will you escape the Day that will turn the children’s hair grey.
M. Sarwar If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed?

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem a Day when the sky will be torn apart? God’s promise will certainly be fulfilled.
Yusuf Ali Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished.
W. Khan The Day when the heavens will be rent asunder and God’s promise shall be fulfilled.
M. Sarwar On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem This is a reminder. Let whoever wishes take the way to his Lord.
Yusuf Ali Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord!
W. Khan This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord.
M. Sarwar This is a reminder. Let anyone who wants, seek guidance from his Lord.

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], your Lord is well aware that you sometimes spend nearly two-thirds of the night at prayer––sometimes half, sometimes a third––as do some of your followers. God determines the division of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to keep a measure of it and He has relented towards all of you, so recite as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that some of you will be sick, some of you travelling through the land seeking God’s bounty, some of you fighting in God’s way: recite as much as is easy for you, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and make God a good loan. Whatever good you store up for yourselves will be improved and increased for you. Ask God for His forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful.
Yusuf Ali Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah's bounty; yet others fighting in Allah's Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah's Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
W. Khan Your Lord knows that you stand up praying for nearly twothirds of the night, or one-half of it and sometimes one third of it, as do others among your followers. God determines the measure of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to do it, so He has turned to you in mercy. Recite, then, as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that there will be some among you who may be sick and others who will be travelling throughout the land seeking God’s bounty, and yet others who may be fighting for the cause of God. So, recite, then as much of it as you are able, and be constant in prayer, and spend in charity, and give to God a goodly loan. For whatever good deed you send on before you for your souls, you will find it with God. It will be improved and richly rewarded by Him. Seek God’s forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful.
M. Sarwar Your Lord knows that you and a group of those who are with you get up for prayer sometimes for less than two-thirds of the night, sometimes half and sometimes one-third of it. God determines the duration of the night and day. He knew that it would be hard for you to keep an exact account of the timing of the night prayers, so He turned to you with forgiveness. Thus, recite from the Quran as much as possible. He knew that some of you would be sick, others would travel in the land to seek God's favors, and still others would fight for the cause of God. Thus, recite from the Quran as much as possible, be steadfast in prayer, pay the zakat , and give virtuous loans to God. Whatever good deeds you save for the next life, you will certainly find them with God. This is the best investment, and for this you will find the greatest reward. Ask forgiveness from God. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful.
