Chapter 77

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By the [winds] sent forth in swift succession,
Yusuf Ali By the (Winds) sent forth one after another (to man's profit);
W. Khan By the winds sent forth in swift succession,
M. Sarwar By (the angels) sent forth with the commands of God,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem violently storming,
Yusuf Ali Which then blow violently in tempestuous Gusts,
W. Khan and then storming on with a tempest’s force,
M. Sarwar by (the angels) as swift as blowing winds,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem scattering far and wide,
Yusuf Ali And scatter (things) far and wide;
W. Khan and the rain-spreading winds,
M. Sarwar by (the angels) spreading (the words of God) far and wide,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem separating forcefully,
Yusuf Ali Then separate them, one from another,
W. Khan separating one from another,
M. Sarwar by (the angels) who make a clear distinction between right and wrong

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem delivering a reminder,
Yusuf Ali Then spread abroad a Message,
W. Khan by those who bring down the reminder,
M. Sarwar and by those who reveal revelations (to the prophets)

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem as a proof or a warning:
Yusuf Ali Whether of Justification or of Warning;-
W. Khan to excuse some and warn others:
M. Sarwar to provide excuses for some and to give warnings to others:

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem what you are promised will come to pass.
Yusuf Ali Assuredly, what ye are promised must come to pass.
W. Khan that which you have been promised shall be fulfilled.
M. Sarwar that whatever with which you have been warned will inevitably come to pass.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem When the stars are dimmed
Yusuf Ali Then when the stars become dim;
W. Khan When the stars lose their light,
M. Sarwar Then the stars will lose their light.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem and the sky is torn apart,
Yusuf Ali When the heaven is cleft asunder;
W. Khan and when the sky is rent asunder,
M. Sarwar Heavens will rent asunder.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem when the mountains are turned to dust
Yusuf Ali When the mountains are scattered (to the winds) as dust;
W. Khan and when the mountains crumble into dust
M. Sarwar The mountains will be blown away as dust.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem and the messengers given their appointed time––
Yusuf Ali And when the messengers are (all) appointed a time (to collect);-
W. Khan and when the messengers are brought together at the appointed time—
M. Sarwar The Messengers will receive their appointments.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem for what Day has all this been set?
Yusuf Ali For what Day are these (portents) deferred?
W. Khan for what Day has this been appointed?
M. Sarwar If one asks, "To which day have such calamitous events been postponed?"

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem The Day of Decision.
Yusuf Ali For the Day of Sorting out.
W. Khan For the Day of Decision.
M. Sarwar one will be told,"To the Day of Distinction".

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem What will explain to you what the Day of Decision is?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what is the Day of Sorting out?
W. Khan What will explain to you what the Day of Judgement is?
M. Sarwar Would that you knew about the Day of Judgment!

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth.
M. Sarwar On that day, woe will be to those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Did We not destroy the first [of them]?
Yusuf Ali Did We not destroy the men of old (for their evil)?
W. Khan Did We not destroy the earlier peoples?
M. Sarwar Did We not destroy the ancient people

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem We shall make the last follow them:
Yusuf Ali So shall We make later (generations) follow them.
W. Khan We will now cause the later ones to follow them:
M. Sarwar and make others settle after them in their land?

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem this is how We deal with the guilty.
Yusuf Ali Thus do We deal with men of sin.
W. Khan thus do We deal with the culprits.
M. Sarwar Thus do We deal with the sinful ones.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem Did We not make you from an underrated fluid
Yusuf Ali Have We not created you from a fluid (held) despicable?-
W. Khan Did We not create you from a humble fluid,
M. Sarwar Did We not create you from an insignificant drop of fluid

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem which We housed in a safe lodging
Yusuf Ali The which We placed in a place of rest, firmly fixed,
W. Khan then placed it in a secure repository [the womb],
M. Sarwar and place it in a secure place

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem for a determined period?
Yusuf Ali For a period (of gestation), determined (according to need)?
W. Khan for an appointed term?
M. Sarwar for an appointed time?

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem We determine [it]: how excellently We determine!
Yusuf Ali For We do determine (according to need); for We are the best to determine (things).
W. Khan Thus We have determined the stages of development and Our power to determine is excellent indeed.
M. Sarwar Thus did We Plan and how excellent is Our planning!

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day! to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected the revelations of God!

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem Did We not make the earth a home
Yusuf Ali Have We not made the earth (as a place) to draw together.
W. Khan Have We not made the earth a receptacle,
M. Sarwar Did We not make the earth as a gathering place

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem for the living and the dead?
Yusuf Ali The living and the dead,
W. Khan for the living and the dead?
M. Sarwar for the living and the dead,

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem Did We not place firm, lofty mountains on it and provide you with sweet water?
Yusuf Ali And made therein mountains standing firm, lofty (in stature); and provided for you water sweet (and wholesome)?
W. Khan Have We not placed high mountains upon it and given you fresh water to drink?
M. Sarwar place on it high mountains and provide you with fresh water?

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that Day (of Judgment) woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem They will be told, ‘Go to that which you used to deny!
Yusuf Ali (It will be said:) "Depart ye to that which ye used to reject as false!
W. Khan Proceed to that which you denied.
M. Sarwar Proceed to that (the Day of Judgment) which you have rejected.

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem Go to a shadow of smoke!’ It rises in three columns;
Yusuf Ali "Depart ye to a Shadow (of smoke ascending) in three columns,
W. Khan Proceed to a shadow rising in three columns:
M. Sarwar Proceed to that shadow, rising in three columns

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem no shade does it give, nor relief from the flame;
Yusuf Ali "(Which yields) no shade of coolness, and is of no use against the fierce Blaze.
W. Khan affording neither shade, nor protection from the flames,
M. Sarwar which neither gives shade nor protects one from the flames.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem it shoots out sparks as large as treetrunks
Yusuf Ali "Indeed it throws about sparks (huge) as Forts,
W. Khan and throwing up sparks as huge as towers
M. Sarwar The fire will shoot out sparks as big as huge towers

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem and as bright as copper.
Yusuf Ali "As if there were (a string of) yellow camels (marching swiftly)."
W. Khan and as bright as a herd of yellow camels.
M. Sarwar and yellow camels.

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem On that Day they will be speechless,
Yusuf Ali That will be a Day when they shall not be able to speak.
W. Khan On that Day they will be speechless,
M. Sarwar On that day they will not be able to speak,

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem and they will be given no chance to offer any excuses.
Yusuf Ali Nor will it be open to them to put forth pleas.
W. Khan nor shall they be permitted to offer excuses.
M. Sarwar nor will they be permitted to offer any excuses.

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem [They will be told], ‘This is the Day of Decision: We have gathered you and earlier generations.
Yusuf Ali That will be a Day of Sorting out! We shall gather you together and those before (you)!
W. Khan This is the Day of Judgement. We have assembled you all together with past generations.
M. Sarwar That is the Day of Judgment. We will bring you together with all the ancient peoples.

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem If you have any plots against Me, try them now.’
Yusuf Ali Now, if ye have a trick (or plot), use it against Me!
W. Khan If now you have any strategy, use it against Me.
M. Sarwar If you have any plans, use them.

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem But those who took heed of God will enjoy cool shade, springs,
Yusuf Ali As to the Righteous, they shall be amidst (cool) shades and springs (of water).
W. Khan The righteous shall dwell amidst cool shades and fountains,
M. Sarwar The pious ones will rest amid the shade, springs,

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem and any fruit they desire;
Yusuf Ali And (they shall have) fruits,- all they desire.
W. Khan and shall have fruits such as they desire;
M. Sarwar and fruits of the kind which they desire.

Verse 43

Abdel Haleem [they will be told], ‘Eat and drink to your hearts’ content as a reward for your deeds:
Yusuf Ali "Eat ye and drink ye to your heart's content: for that ye worked (Righteousness).
W. Khan [They will be told], ‘Eat and drink with relish in return for what you did [in life]:
M. Sarwar (They will be told), "Eat and drink in good health as a reward for what you have done".

Verse 44

Abdel Haleem this is how We reward those who do good.’
Yusuf Ali Thus do We certainly reward the Doers of Good.
W. Khan this is how We reward those who do good.’
M. Sarwar Thus do We reward the righteous ones.

Verse 45

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan [But] woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 46

Abdel Haleem [You may] eat and enjoy yourselves for a short while, evildoers that you are.
Yusuf Ali (O ye unjust!) Eat ye and enjoy yourselves (but) a little while, for that ye are Sinners.
W. Khan Eat [your fill] and enjoy your life for a little while, O you who are lost in sin.
M. Sarwar (Disbelievers), eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while. You are certainly sinful ones.

Verse 47

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 48

Abdel Haleem When they are told, ‘Bow down in prayer,’ they do not do so.
Yusuf Ali And when it is said to them, "Prostrate yourselves!" they do not so.
W. Khan When they are bidden to bow down, they do not bow down.
M. Sarwar When they are told to say their prayers, they do not bow down (in prayer).

Verse 49

Abdel Haleem Woe, on that Day, to those who denied the truth!
Yusuf Ali Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!
W. Khan Woe on that Day to those who reject the truth!
M. Sarwar On that day, woe would be upon those who have rejected God's revelations!

Verse 50

Abdel Haleem In what revelation, after this, will they believe?
Yusuf Ali Then what Message, after that, will they believe in?
W. Khan In which word then, after this, will they believe?
M. Sarwar In which word other than the Quran will they believe?
