The Qurʾān

Chapter 80

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem He frowned and turned away
Yusuf Ali (The Prophet) frowned and turned away,
W. Khan He frowned and turned away
M. Sarwar He frowned and then turned away

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem when the blind man came to him––
Yusuf Ali Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).
W. Khan when the blind man approached him,
M. Sarwar from a blind man who had come up to him.

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem for all you know, he might have grown in spirit,
Yusuf Ali But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-
W. Khan for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself,
M. Sarwar You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem or taken note of something useful to him.
Yusuf Ali Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?
W. Khan or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning?
M. Sarwar or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem For the self-satisfied one
Yusuf Ali As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,
W. Khan As for him who was indifferent,
M. Sarwar Yet you pay attention

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem you go out of your way––
Yusuf Ali To him dost thou attend;
W. Khan you eagerly attended to him—
M. Sarwar to a rich man,

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––
Yusuf Ali Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).
W. Khan though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself—
M. Sarwar though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem but from the one who has come to you full of eagerness
Yusuf Ali But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,
W. Khan but as for one who comes to you, eagerly
M. Sarwar As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance).

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem and awe
Yusuf Ali And with fear (in his heart),
W. Khan and in awe of God
M. Sarwar and who has fear of God,

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem you allow yourself to be distracted.
Yusuf Ali Of him wast thou unmindful.
W. Khan you pay him no heed.
M. Sarwar you ignore him.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem No indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson
Yusuf Ali By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:
W. Khan Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition.
M. Sarwar These verses are a reminder

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem from which those who wish to be taught should learn,
Yusuf Ali Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.
W. Khan Let him who will, pay heed to it.
M. Sarwar so let those who want to follow its guidance do so.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem [written] on honoured,
Yusuf Ali (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour,
W. Khan It is set down on honoured pages,
M. Sarwar (This Quran) is also recorded in honorable books,

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem exalted, pure pages,
Yusuf Ali Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy,
W. Khan exalted and purified,
M. Sarwar exalted, purified,

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem by the hands of
Yusuf Ali (Written) by the hands of scribes-
W. Khan by the hands of
M. Sarwar by the hands of the noble, virtuous,

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem noble and virtuous scribes.
Yusuf Ali Honourable and Pious and Just.
W. Khan noble and virtuous scribes.
M. Sarwar and angelic scribes.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem Woe to man! How ungrateful he is!
Yusuf Ali Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah;
W. Khan Woe to man! How ungrateful he is!
M. Sarwar May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve?

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem From what thing does God create him?
Yusuf Ali From what stuff hath He created him?
W. Khan Of what [stuff] has He created him?
M. Sarwar From what has God created him?

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him,
Yusuf Ali From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions;
W. Khan Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him,
M. Sarwar He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem He makes the way easy for him,
Yusuf Ali Then doth He make His path smooth for him;
W. Khan He makes his path easy for him.
M. Sarwar and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem then He causes him to die and be buried.
Yusuf Ali Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;
W. Khan Then He causes him to die and be buried.
M. Sarwar Then He caused him to die and be buried

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem When He wills, He will raise him up again.
Yusuf Ali Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).
W. Khan Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life.
M. Sarwar and He will resurrect him whenever He wants.

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem Yet mandoes not fulfil God’s commands.
Yusuf Ali By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.
W. Khan Yet man declines to do His bidding.
M. Sarwar Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands.

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem Let man consider the food he eats!
Yusuf Ali Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):
W. Khan Let man reflect on the food he eats.
M. Sarwar Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem We pour down abundant water
Yusuf Ali For that We pour forth water in abundance,
W. Khan We let the rain pour down in torrents
M. Sarwar We send down abundant water,

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem and cause the soil to split open.
Yusuf Ali And We split the earth in fragments,
W. Khan and then We cleaved the earth asunder.
M. Sarwar and let the earth to break open

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem We make grain grow,
Yusuf Ali And produce therein corn,
W. Khan We make the grain grow out of it,
M. Sarwar to yield therein corn,

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem and vines, fresh vegetation,
Yusuf Ali And Grapes and nutritious plants,
W. Khan and grape vines and vegetables,
M. Sarwar grapes, vegetables,

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem olive trees, date palms,
Yusuf Ali And Olives and Dates,
W. Khan and olive trees and date palms
M. Sarwar olives, dates,

Verse 30

Abdel Haleem luscious gardens,
Yusuf Ali And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,
W. Khan and burgeoning enclosed gardens
M. Sarwar thickly planted gardens,

Verse 31

Abdel Haleem fruits, and fodder:
Yusuf Ali And fruits and fodder,-
W. Khan and fruits and fodder
M. Sarwar fruits, and grass.

Verse 32

Abdel Haleem all for you and your livestock to enjoy.
Yusuf Ali For use and convenience to you and your cattle.
W. Khan as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy.
M. Sarwar (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle.

Verse 33

Abdel Haleem When the Deafening Blast comes––
Yusuf Ali At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-
W. Khan But when the deafening blast is sounded,
M. Sarwar When the trumpet sounds,

Verse 34

Abdel Haleem the Day man will flee from his own brother,
Yusuf Ali That Day shall a man flee from his own brother,
W. Khan on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother,
M. Sarwar it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother,

Verse 35

Abdel Haleem his mother, his father,
Yusuf Ali And from his mother and his father,
W. Khan his mother, his father,
M. Sarwar mother, father,

Verse 36

Abdel Haleem his wife, his children:
Yusuf Ali And from his wife and his children.
W. Khan his wife and his sons:
M. Sarwar wife and sons,

Verse 37

Abdel Haleem each of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day-
Yusuf Ali Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.
W. Khan on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own—
M. Sarwar for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns.

Verse 38

Abdel Haleem on that Day some faces will be beaming,
Yusuf Ali Some faces that Day will be beaming,
W. Khan on that Day some faces will be beaming,
M. Sarwar Some faces on that day will be radiant,

Verse 39

Abdel Haleem laughing, and rejoicing,
Yusuf Ali Laughing, rejoicing.
W. Khan laughing, and rejoicing,
M. Sarwar laughing and joyous

Verse 40

Abdel Haleem but some faces will be dust-stained
Yusuf Ali And other faces that Day will be dust-stained,
W. Khan but some faces will be covered with dust
M. Sarwar but others will be gloomy

Verse 41

Abdel Haleem and covered in darkness:
Yusuf Ali Blackness will cover them:
W. Khan and overcast with gloom:
M. Sarwar and covered by darkness.

Verse 42

Abdel Haleem those are the disbelievers, the licentious.
Yusuf Ali Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity.
W. Khan those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity.
M. Sarwar These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers.
