Chapter 81: al-Takwīr — Implosion

[We begin] with the name of Allāh, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful.

  1. When the Sun has been collapsed,
  2. When the stars have been blurred, rendered fall stale, dull, dimmed
  3. When the mountains have been made to float around,
  4. When pregnant investments have been left behind,
  5. When fierce animals have been squeezed into herds,
  6. When the oceans have been made to sizzle,
  7. When all souls have been sorted off,
  8. When the baby girl buried alive has been asked
  9. Whatever did she do to deserve this,
  10. When the logs of everyone’s actions have been published,
  11. When the sky has been skinned open ‘s] skin is peeled off/open [stripped, the skin of the sky is peeled, frayed ],
  12. When the Inferno has been flared up,
  13. When the Lush Garden has been made ready brought near [is just around the corner, close out of honour, awarded] ,
  14. Then each soul knows full well what it has to show for itself.
  15. So where are you all going?

إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ

2. Wa-idha al-nujūmu inkadarat wæ ɪð ænnʊˈdʒuum ʊnˈkædærɑt
3. Wa-idha al-jibālu suyyirat wæ ɪð æddʒɪˈbæælʊ ˈsʊjjɪrɑt
  1. Wa-idha al-ʿishāru ʿuṭṭilat
  2. Wa-idha al-wuḥūshu ḥushirat
  3. Wa-idha al-biḥāru sujjirat
  4. Wa-itha annufoosu zuwwijat
  5. Wa-itha almawoodatu su-ilat
  6. Bi-ayyi thanbin qutilat
  7. Wa-itha assuhufunushirat
  8. Wa-itha assamao kushitat
  9. Wa-itha aljaheemu suAAAAirat
  10. Wa-itha aljannatu ozlifat
  11. AAalimat nafsun ma ahdarat
  12. Fala oqsimu bilkhunnas
  13. Aljawari alkunnas
  14. Wallayli itha AAasAAas
  15. Wassubhi ithatanaffas
  16. Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareem
  17. Thee quwwatin AAinda theealAAarshi makeen
  18. MutaAAin thamma ameen
  19. Wama sahibukum bimajnoon
  20. Walaqad raahu bilofuqialmubeen
  21. Wama huwa AAala alghaybi bidaneen
  22. Wama huwa biqawli shaytaninrajeem
  23. Faayna tathhaboon
  24. In huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameen
  25. Liman shaa minkum an yastaqeem
  26. Wama tashaoona illa anyashaa Allahu rabbu alAAalameen

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem When the sun is shrouded in darkness,
Yusuf Ali When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up;
W. Khan When the sun is folded up,
M. Sarwar (On the day) when the sun is made to cease shining,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem when the stars are dimmed,
Yusuf Ali When the stars fall, losing their lustre;
W. Khan and when the stars lose their light,
M. Sarwar the stars are made to fade away,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem when the mountains are set in motion,
Yusuf Ali When the mountains vanish (like a mirage);
W. Khan and when the mountains are moved,
M. Sarwar the mountains are scattered about as dust,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem when pregnant camels are abandoned,
Yusuf Ali When the she-camels, ten months with young, are left untended;
W. Khan when ten-month pregnant camels are left untended,
M. Sarwar the young barren camels are abandoned,

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem when wild beasts are herded together,
Yusuf Ali When the wild beasts are herded together (in the human habitations);
W. Khan and when all beasts are gathered together,
M. Sarwar the wild beasts are herded together,

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem when the seas boil over,
Yusuf Ali When the oceans boil over with a swell;
W. Khan and when the seas are set on fire,
M. Sarwar the oceans are brought to a boil,

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem when souls are sorted into classes,
Yusuf Ali When the souls are sorted out, (being joined, like with like);
W. Khan when the souls are divided into different classes,
M. Sarwar souls are reunited with their bodies,

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem when the baby girl buried alive is asked
Yusuf Ali When the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned -
W. Khan and when the female infant buried alive is asked
M. Sarwar questions are asked about the baby girls buried alive,

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem for what sin she was killed,
Yusuf Ali For what crime she was killed;
W. Khan for what sin she was killed,
M. Sarwar such as, "For what crime were they murdered?"

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem when the records of deeds are spread open,
Yusuf Ali When the scrolls are laid open;
W. Khan when the records of men’s deeds are laid open,
M. Sarwar the records of deeds are made public,

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem when the sky is stripped away,
Yusuf Ali When the world on High is unveiled;
W. Khan when the sky is unveiled,
M. Sarwar the heavens are unveiled,

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem when Hell is made to blaze
Yusuf Ali When the Blazing Fire is kindled to fierce heat;
W. Khan and when Hell is set ablaze,
M. Sarwar hell is made to blaze,

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem and Paradise brought near:
Yusuf Ali And when the Garden is brought near;-
W. Khan when Paradise is brought close:
M. Sarwar and Paradise is brought near,

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem then every soul will know what it has brought about.
Yusuf Ali (Then) shall each soul know what it has put forward.
W. Khan [then] each soul shall know what it has put forward.
M. Sarwar then every soul will discover the consequence of its deeds.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem I swear by the planets
Yusuf Ali So verily I call to witness the planets - that recede,
W. Khan I swear by the receding stars,
M. Sarwar I do not need to swear by the orbiting

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem that recede, move, and hide,
Yusuf Ali Go straight, or hide;
W. Khan the planets that run their course and set,
M. Sarwar stars which are visible during the night

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem by the night that descends,
Yusuf Ali And the Night as it dissipates;
W. Khan and the night that falls,
M. Sarwar and sit during the day, or by the darkening night

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem by the dawn that softly breathes:
Yusuf Ali And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness;-
W. Khan and the first breath of morning.
M. Sarwar and brightening morning,

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem this is the speech of a noble messenger,
Yusuf Ali Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger,
W. Khan Truly, this is the word brought by a noble messenger,
M. Sarwar that the Quran is the word of the honorable angelic, mighty Messenger

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem who possesses great strength and is held in honour by the Lord of the Throne––
Yusuf Ali Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne,
W. Khan endowed with power and held in honour by the Lord of the Throne—
M. Sarwar who is honored in the presence of the Lord of the Throne,

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem he is obeyed there and worthy of trust.
Yusuf Ali With authority there, (and) faithful to his trust.
W. Khan who is obeyed there and is worthy of trust.
M. Sarwar obeyed by (all creatures) and faithful to His trust.

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem Your companion is not mad:
Yusuf Ali And (O people!) your companion is not one possessed;
W. Khan Your companion is not one possessed:
M. Sarwar Your companion (Muhammad) does not suffer from any mental illness

Verse 23

Abdel Haleem he did see him on the clear horizon.
Yusuf Ali And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon.
W. Khan he truly beheld him [the angel] on the clear horizon.
M. Sarwar He certainly saw him (Gabriel) high up on the horizon in his original form

Verse 24

Abdel Haleem He does not withhold what is revealed to him from beyond.
Yusuf Ali Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen.
W. Khan He is not avid of the Unseen.
M. Sarwar He (Muhammad) is not accused of lying about the unseen.

Verse 25

Abdel Haleem This is not the word of an outcast devil.
Yusuf Ali Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed.
W. Khan Nor is this the word of an outcast devil.
M. Sarwar The Quran is not the word of condemned satan.

Verse 26

Abdel Haleem So where are you [people] going?
Yusuf Ali When whither go ye?
W. Khan So where are you going?
M. Sarwar Where then will you go?

Verse 27

Abdel Haleem This is a message for all people;
Yusuf Ali Verily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds:
W. Khan This is merely a reminder to all mankind;
M. Sarwar This is certainly the guidance for all (jinn and mankind).

Verse 28

Abdel Haleem for those who wish to take the straight path.
Yusuf Ali (With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight:
W. Khan to every one of you who wishes to tread the straight path.
M. Sarwar So let those who want, choose the right guidance

Verse 29

Abdel Haleem But you will only wish to do so by the will of God, the Lord of all people.
Yusuf Ali But ye shall not will except as Allah wills,- the Cherisher of the Worlds.
W. Khan But you cannot will it unless God, the Lord of the Universe, so wills it [to show you that way].
M. Sarwar However, you will not be able to choose anything unless God, Lord of the Universe wills it to be so.
