The Qurʾān

Chapter 85

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By the sky with its towering constellations,
Yusuf Ali By the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs;
W. Khan By the sky with its constellations,
M. Sarwar By the heavens with constellations,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem by the promised Day,
Yusuf Ali By the promised Day (of Judgment);
W. Khan and by the promised Day,
M. Sarwar by the promised day,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem by the Witness and that which is witnessed,
Yusuf Ali By one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness;-
W. Khan by the Witness and the witnessed,
M. Sarwar and by the witness (Muhammad) and that which is witnessed (the Day of Judgment),

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem damned were the makers of the trench,
Yusuf Ali Woe to the makers of the pit (of fire),
W. Khan destroyed were the people of the trench,
M. Sarwar may the people be condemned those who tortured (the believers) in ditches

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem the makers of the fuel-stoked fire!
Yusuf Ali Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel:
W. Khan the makers of the fuel-stoked fire!
M. Sarwar by a burning fire

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem They sat down
Yusuf Ali Behold! they sat over against the (fire),
W. Khan They sat by it
M. Sarwar while they themselves sat around it

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem to watch what they were doing to the believers.
Yusuf Ali And they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers.
W. Khan to watch what they were doing to the believers,
M. Sarwar witnessing what they were doing.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem Their only grievance against them was their faith in God, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy,
Yusuf Ali And they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise!-
W. Khan whom they hated for no other reason than that they believed in God, the Almighty, the Praiseworthy,
M. Sarwar The only reason for which they tormented the believers was the latter's belief in God, the Majestic, and Praiseworthy.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem to whom all control over the heavens and earth belongs: God is witness over all things.
Yusuf Ali Him to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things.
W. Khan to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. God is witness over all things.
M. Sarwar and the One to whom belongs the heavens and the earth. God is the Witness of all things.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem For those who persecute believing men and women, and do not repent afterwards, there will be the torment of Hell and burning.
Yusuf Ali Those who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire.
W. Khan Those who persecute the believing men and believing women, and then do not repent, will surely suffer the punishment of Hell, and the torment of burning.
M. Sarwar Those who persecute the believing men and women without repenting will suffer the torment of hell and that of the burning fire.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem But for those who believe and do good deeds there will be Gardens graced with flowing streams: that is the great triumph.
Yusuf Ali For those who believe and do righteous deeds, will be Gardens; beneath which rivers flow: That is the great Salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires),
W. Khan But those who believe and do good deeds shall be rewarded with gardens watered by flowing rivers. That is the supreme triumph.
M. Sarwar As for the righteously striving believers, they will live in Paradise wherein streams flow. This is the greatest triumph.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], your Lord’s punishment is truly stern––
Yusuf Ali Truly strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord.
W. Khan The grip of your Lord is indeed severe—
M. Sarwar The vengeance of God is terribly severe.

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem it is He who brings people to life, and will restore them to life again––
Yusuf Ali It is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life).
W. Khan it is He who begins and repeats [His creation]—
M. Sarwar It is He who creates all things and causes them to return.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem and He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Loving.
Yusuf Ali And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness,
W. Khan and He is the Forgiving and Loving One.
M. Sarwar He is the All-forgiving, the Most Loving One,

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem The Glorious Lord of the Throne,
Yusuf Ali Lord of the Throne of Glory,
W. Khan The Lord of the Glorious Throne,
M. Sarwar the Owner of the Throne, the Glorious One,

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem He does whatever He will.
Yusuf Ali Doer (without let) of all that He intends.
W. Khan Executor of His own will.
M. Sarwar and the Most Effective in His decision.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem Have you [not] heard the stories of the forces
Yusuf Ali Has the story reached thee, of the forces-
W. Khan Have you not heard the story of the hosts
M. Sarwar Have you not heard about the stories of the armies

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem of Pharaoh and Thamud?
Yusuf Ali Of Pharaoh and the Thamud?
W. Khan of Pharaoh and Thamud?
M. Sarwar of the Pharaoh and Thamud?

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem Yet still the disbelievers persist in denial.
Yusuf Ali And yet the Unbelievers (persist) in rejecting (the Truth)!
W. Khan Yet those who deny the truth persist in denial.
M. Sarwar In fact, the disbelievers had always rejected (Our revelations).

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem God surrounds them all.
Yusuf Ali But Allah doth encompass them from behind!
W. Khan God encompasses them from all sides.
M. Sarwar However, God encompassed their activities.

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem This is truly a glorious Quran
Yusuf Ali Day, this is a Glorious Qur'an,
W. Khan It is indeed a glorious Quran,
M. Sarwar What is revealed to you is certainly a glorious Quran

Verse 22

Abdel Haleem [written] on a preserved Tablet.
Yusuf Ali (Inscribed) in a Tablet Preserved!
W. Khan written on a preserved Tablet.
M. Sarwar that exists in a well-guarded tablet.
