The Qurʾān

Chapter 86

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By the sky and the night-comer––
Yusuf Ali By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);-
W. Khan By the heavens and that which comes in the night—
M. Sarwar By the heavens and al-tariq.

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem What will explain to you what the night-comer is?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?-
W. Khan and what could make you know what it is that comes in the night?
M. Sarwar Do you know what al-tariq is?

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem The piercing star––
Yusuf Ali (It is) the Star of piercing brightness;-
W. Khan It is the shining star—
M. Sarwar (It is a nightly radiant star).

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem there is a watcher over every soul.
Yusuf Ali There is no soul but has a protector over it.
W. Khan [for] no human being has been left unguarded.
M. Sarwar There is no soul which is not guarded (by the two angels who record all of its deeds).

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Man should reflect on what he was created from.
Yusuf Ali Now let man but think from what he is created!
W. Khan Let man reflect on what he was created from.
M. Sarwar Let the human being reflect that from what he has been created.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem He is created from spurting fluid,
Yusuf Ali He is created from a drop emitted-
W. Khan He was created from spurting fluid,
M. Sarwar He has been created from an ejected drop of fluid

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem then he emerges from between the backbone and breastbone:
Yusuf Ali Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:
W. Khan issuing from between the backbone and the breastbone:
M. Sarwar which comes out of the loins and ribs.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem God is certainly able to bring him back to life.
Yusuf Ali Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!
W. Khan He certainly has the power to bring him back to life.
M. Sarwar God has all power to resurrect him.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem On the Day when secrets are laid bare
Yusuf Ali The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,
W. Khan On the Day when secrets are disclosed,
M. Sarwar On the day when all secrets will be made public,

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem he will have no power and no one to help him.
Yusuf Ali (Man) will have no power, and no helper.
W. Khan [man] will have no power, and no helper.
M. Sarwar he will have no power, nor anyone to help him.

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem By the sky and its recurring rain,
Yusuf Ali By the Firmament which returns (in its round),
W. Khan By the heavens, ever-revolving,
M. Sarwar By the rotating heavens

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem by the earth that cracks open!
Yusuf Ali And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-
W. Khan by the earth cracking open with new growth.
M. Sarwar and the replenishing earth,

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem This is truly a decisive statement;
Yusuf Ali Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):
W. Khan It is surely a decisive utterance;
M. Sarwar the Quran is the final word,

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem it is not something to be taken lightly.
Yusuf Ali It is not a thing for amusement.
W. Khan and is not to be taken lightly.
M. Sarwar and it is certainly not a jest.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem They plot and scheme,
Yusuf Ali As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,
W. Khan They are planning a scheme,
M. Sarwar They (disbelievers) plot every evil plan,

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem but so do I:
Yusuf Ali And I am planning a scheme.
W. Khan and so am I:
M. Sarwar but I too plan against them.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], let the disbelievers be, let them be for a while.
Yusuf Ali Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).
W. Khan so bear with those who deny the truth, and let them be for a little while.
M. Sarwar Give respite to the disbelievers and leave them alone for a while.
