Chapter 87: al-Āʿlá — the Most High

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], glorify the name of your Lord the Most High,
Yusuf Ali Glorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High,
W. Khan Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), glorify the Name of your lord, the Most High,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem who created [all things] in due proportion;
Yusuf Ali Who hath created, and further, given order and proportion;
W. Khan who created all things and gave them due proportions,
M. Sarwar Who has created (all things) proportionately,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem who determined their destinies and guided them;
Yusuf Ali Who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance;
W. Khan who determines the nature [of all that exists], and guided it accordingly;
M. Sarwar decreed their destinies, and provided them with guidance.

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem who brought out the green pasture
Yusuf Ali And Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture,
W. Khan who brings forth green pasture,
M. Sarwar It is He who has caused the grass to grow,

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem then made it dark debris.
Yusuf Ali And then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble.
W. Khan then turns it into black stubble.
M. Sarwar then caused it to wither away.

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem [Prophet], We shall teach you [the Quran] and you will not forget––
Yusuf Ali By degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget,
W. Khan [O Prophet!] We shall make you recite the Quran so that you will not forget any of it—
M. Sarwar We shall teach you (the Quran) and you will not forget it

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem unless God wishes; He knows both what is open and what is hidden––
Yusuf Ali Except as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden.
W. Khan except whatever God wills; He knows both what is manifest and what is hidden—
M. Sarwar unless God wills it to be otherwise. He knows all that is made public and all that remains hidden.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem We shall show you the easy way.
Yusuf Ali And We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path).
W. Khan We shall facilitate for you the Easy Way.
M. Sarwar We shall make all your tasks easy.

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem So remind, if reminding will help.
Yusuf Ali Therefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer).
W. Khan Remind, if the reminder can be of benefit.
M. Sarwar Therefore, keep on preaching as long as it is of benefit.

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem Those who stand in awe of God will heed the reminder,
Yusuf Ali The admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah):
W. Khan He who fears [God] will heed the reminder,
M. Sarwar Those who have fear of God will benefit

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem but it will be ignored by the most wicked,
Yusuf Ali But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones,
W. Khan but it will be ignored by the most unfortunate,
M. Sarwar but the reprobates will turn away

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem who will enter the Great Fire,
Yusuf Ali Who will enter the Great Fire,
W. Khan who will enter the Great Fire,
M. Sarwar and suffer the heat of the great fire

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem where they will neither die nor live.
Yusuf Ali In which they will then neither die nor live.
W. Khan where he will neither die nor live.
M. Sarwar wherein they will neither live nor die.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem Prosperous are those who purify themselves,
Yusuf Ali But those will prosper who purify themselves,
W. Khan He who purifies himself,
M. Sarwar Lasting happiness will be for those who purify themselves,

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem remember the name of their Lord, and pray.
Yusuf Ali And glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer.
W. Khan who remembers the name of his Lord and prays, shall indeed be successful.
M. Sarwar remember the name of the Lord, and pray to Him.

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem Yet you [people] prefer the life of this world,
Yusuf Ali Day (behold), ye prefer the life of this world;
W. Khan But you prefer the life of this world,
M. Sarwar However, (the disbelievers) prefer the worldly life

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem even though the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
Yusuf Ali But the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
W. Khan although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
M. Sarwar even though the life hereafter will be better and will last forever.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem All this is in the earlier scriptures,
Yusuf Ali And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelation),-
W. Khan This indeed is what is taught in the former scriptures—
M. Sarwar This is what is written in the ancient heavenly Books,

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
Yusuf Ali The Books of Abraham and Moses.
W. Khan the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
M. Sarwar the Scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
