The Qurʾān

Chapter 90

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem I swear by this city––
Yusuf Ali I do call to witness this City;-
W. Khan I swear by this city—
M. Sarwar I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca)

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem and you [Prophet] are an inhabitant of this city––
Yusuf Ali And thou art a freeman of this City;-
W. Khan and you are dwelling in this city—
M. Sarwar in which you are now living

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem [I swear] by parent and offspring,
Yusuf Ali And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
W. Khan and by parent and offspring,
M. Sarwar or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael)

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem that We have created man for toil and trial.
Yusuf Ali Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.
W. Khan that We have created man into a life of toil and trial.
M. Sarwar that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem Does he think that no one will have power over him?
Yusuf Ali Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
W. Khan Does he think then that no one has power over him?
M. Sarwar Does He think that no one will ever have control over him?

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem ‘I have squandered great wealth,’ he says.
Yusuf Ali He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
W. Khan He says, ‘I have spent enormous wealth.’
M. Sarwar (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)".

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem Does he think no one observes him?
Yusuf Ali Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
W. Khan Does he then think that no one sees him?
M. Sarwar Does he think that no one has seen him?

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem Did We not give him eyes,
Yusuf Ali Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
W. Khan Have We not given him two eyes,
M. Sarwar Have We not given him two eyes,

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem a tongue, lips,
Yusuf Ali And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-
W. Khan and a tongue, and a pair of lips,
M. Sarwar a tongue, and two lips?

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem and point out to him the two clear ways [of good and evil]?
Yusuf Ali And shown him the two highways?
W. Khan and shown him the two paths?
M. Sarwar Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil?

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem Yet he has not attempted the steep path.
Yusuf Ali But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
W. Khan But he has not attempted the ascent.
M. Sarwar Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem What will explain to you what the steep path is?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-
W. Khan What will explain to you what the ascent is?
M. Sarwar Would that you knew what Aqaba is!

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem It is to free a slave,
Yusuf Ali (It is:) freeing the bondman;
W. Khan It is the freeing of a slave;
M. Sarwar It is the setting free of a slave

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem to feed at a time of hunger
Yusuf Ali Or the giving of food in a day of privation
W. Khan or the feeding in times of famine
M. Sarwar or, in a day of famine, the feeding of

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem an orphaned relative
Yusuf Ali To the orphan with claims of relationship,
W. Khan of an orphaned relative
M. Sarwar an orphaned relative

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem or a poor person in distress,
Yusuf Ali Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
W. Khan or some needy person in distress,
M. Sarwar and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of)

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion.
Yusuf Ali Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
W. Khan and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion.
M. Sarwar the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness.

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem Those who do this will be on the right-hand side,
Yusuf Ali Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.
W. Khan Those who do so are the people of the right hand,
M. Sarwar These are the people of the right hand.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem but those who disbelieve in Our revelations will be on the left-hand side,
Yusuf Ali But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
W. Khan and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand,
M. Sarwar As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem and the Fire will close in on them.
Yusuf Ali On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
W. Khan and the Fire will close in on them.
M. Sarwar who will be engulfed in the fire.
