The Qurʾān

Chapter 91

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By the sun in its morning brightness
Yusuf Ali By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
W. Khan By the sun and its rising it
M. Sarwar By the sun and its noon-time brightness,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem and by the moon as it follows it,
Yusuf Ali By the Moon as she follows him;
W. Khan and by the earth and how He brightness
M. Sarwar by the moon when it follows the sun,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem by the day as it displays the sun’s glory
Yusuf Ali By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory;
W. Khan and by the moon as spread it,
M. Sarwar by the day when it brightens the earth,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem and by the night as it conceals it,
Yusuf Ali By the Night as it conceals it;
W. Khan by the soul and how it follows it,
M. Sarwar by the night when it covers the earth with darkness,

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem by the sky and how He built it
Yusuf Ali By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;
W. Khan and by the day as He formed it,
M. Sarwar by the heavens and that (Power) which established them,

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem and by the earth and how He spread it,
Yusuf Ali By the Earth and its (wide) expanse:
W. Khan then inspired it to it reveals its glory
M. Sarwar by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem by the soul and how He formed it
Yusuf Ali By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it;
W. Khan and by the understand what was right and night when it draws a veil over wrong for it.
M. Sarwar and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem and inspired it [to know] its own rebellion and piety!
Yusuf Ali And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
W. Khan He who purifies it it,
M. Sarwar and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety,

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem The one who purifies his soul succeeds
Yusuf Ali Truly he succeeds that purifies it,
W. Khan by the sky and how He built will indeed be successful,
M. Sarwar those who purify their souls will certainly have everlasting happiness

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem and the one who corrupts it fails.
Yusuf Ali And he fails that corrupts it!
W. Khan and he who corrupts it is sure to fail.
M. Sarwar and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness).

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem In their arrogant cruelty, the people of Thamud called [their messenger] a liar,
Yusuf Ali The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing,
W. Khan The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance,
M. Sarwar The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem when the most wicked man among them rose [against him].
Yusuf Ali Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
W. Khan when the most wicked man among them rose up.
M. Sarwar when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil).

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem The messenger of God said to them, ‘[Leave] God’s camel to drink,’
Yusuf Ali But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!"
W. Khan Then the messenger of God said to them, ‘This is God’s she-camel. Let her drink.’
M. Sarwar The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water".

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem but they called him a liar and hamstrung her. Their Lord destroyed them for their crime and levelled them.
Yusuf Ali Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!
W. Khan But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground.
M. Sarwar However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins.

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem He did not hesitate to punish them.
Yusuf Ali And for Him is no fear of its consequences.
W. Khan He did not fear the consequences.
M. Sarwar God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed.
