Chapter 92: al-Layl

Verse 1

Abdel Haleem By the enshrouding night,
Yusuf Ali By the Night as it conceals (the light);
W. Khan By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness,
M. Sarwar By the night when it covers the day,

Verse 2

Abdel Haleem by the radiant day,
Yusuf Ali By the Day as it appears in glory;
W. Khan and by the day as it appears radiantly,
M. Sarwar by the day when it appears radiant,

Verse 3

Abdel Haleem by His creation of male and female!
Yusuf Ali By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-
W. Khan and by the creation of the male and the female.
M. Sarwar and by that (Power) which created the male and female,

Verse 4

Abdel Haleem The ways you take differ greatly.
Yusuf Ali Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.
W. Khan O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends!
M. Sarwar you strive in various ways.

Verse 5

Abdel Haleem There is the one who gives, who is mindful of God,
Yusuf Ali So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),
W. Khan As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God],
M. Sarwar We shall facilitate the path to bliss

Verse 6

Abdel Haleem who testifies to goodness––
Yusuf Ali And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-
W. Khan and believes in the truth of what is right,
M. Sarwar for those who spend for the cause of God,

Verse 7

Abdel Haleem We shall smooth his way towards ease.
Yusuf Ali We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.
W. Khan We will pave his way to ease.
M. Sarwar observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God.

Verse 8

Abdel Haleem There is the one who is miserly, who is self-satisfied,
Yusuf Ali But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,
W. Khan But as for one who is miserly and unheeding,
M. Sarwar But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth,

Verse 9

Abdel Haleem who denies goodness––
Yusuf Ali And gives the lie to the best,-
W. Khan and rejects what is right,
M. Sarwar and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God).

Verse 10

Abdel Haleem We shall smooth his way towards hardship
Yusuf Ali We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;
W. Khan We shall pave his way to hardship,
M. Sarwar We shall facilitate the path to affliction

Verse 11

Abdel Haleem and his wealth will not help him as he falls.
Yusuf Ali Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).
W. Khan nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit].
M. Sarwar and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction.

Verse 12

Abdel Haleem Our part is to provide guidance––
Yusuf Ali Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide,
W. Khan Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance—
M. Sarwar Surely, in Our hands is guidance,

Verse 13

Abdel Haleem this world and the next belong to Us––
Yusuf Ali And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.
W. Khan and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world—
M. Sarwar and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life.

Verse 14

Abdel Haleem so I warn you about the raging Fire,
Yusuf Ali Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;
W. Khan I have warned you then about a raging Fire:
M. Sarwar I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire

Verse 15

Abdel Haleem in which none but the most wicked one will burn,
Yusuf Ali None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones
W. Khan none shall enter it but the most wicked,
M. Sarwar in which no one will suffer forever

Verse 16

Abdel Haleem who denied [the truth], and turned away.
Yusuf Ali Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.
W. Khan who denied [the truth], and turned away.
M. Sarwar except the wicked ones who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it.

Verse 17

Abdel Haleem The most pious one will be spared this––
Yusuf Ali But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-
W. Khan One who fears God shall be kept away from it—
M. Sarwar The pious ones who spend for the cause of God

Verse 18

Abdel Haleem who gives his wealth away as self-purification,
Yusuf Ali Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,
W. Khan one who gives his wealth to become purified,
M. Sarwar and purify themselves will be safe from this fire.

Verse 19

Abdel Haleem not to return a favour to anyone
Yusuf Ali And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,
W. Khan and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid,
M. Sarwar They do not expect any reward

Verse 20

Abdel Haleem but for the sake of his Lord the Most High––
Yusuf Ali But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;
W. Khan acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High—
M. Sarwar except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High

Verse 21

Abdel Haleem and he will be well pleased.
Yusuf Ali And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
W. Khan and before long he will be well satisfied.
M. Sarwar and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy.
