The Qurʾān

Chapter 96: al-ʿAlaq — Embryo

I begin with the name of Allāh, the All-Compassionate, the Very Compassionate.

  1. Read! In the name of your Master and Provider who created —
  2. Who shaped (formed, developped) human beings from a primaeval clump (embryo).
  3. Read! For your Provider was so generous
  4. To make literacy possible for humankind
  5. So they could overcome their ignorance.
  6. What a shame that some people get cocky
  7. And think they’re accountable to no one. they can do whatever they please
  8. But all shall return to your Master and Provider.
  9. Have you seen the one won’t allow
  10. A worshipper to pray?
  11. Have you noticed if the worshipper
  12. Doesn’t he know the Divine sees him? Doesn't such a person know the Deity is watching?
  13. Unacceptable. If he doesn’t stop,
  14. In My power, I shall grab the hair covering his forehead, lying and sinful
  15. Drag
  16. ??let him call his associates / accomplices . i will call the angels of hell
  17. No, don't listen to him. Kneel face down in prayer and come closer.

Sūrat al-ʿAlaq

  1. Iqra! bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaq
  2. Khalaqa al-insana min ʿalaq
  3. Iqra! warabbuka al-akram
  4. Allathee ʿallama bilqalam
  5. ʿallama al-insana ma lamyaʿlam
  6. Kalla inna al-insana layatgha
  7. An raahu istaghna
  8. Inna ila rabbika arrujʿa
  9. Araayta allathee yanha
  10. ʿabdan itha salla
  11. Araayta in kana ʿala alhuda
  12. Aw amara bittaqwa
  13. Araayta in kaththaba watawalla
  14. Alam yaʿlam bi-anna Allaha yara
  15. Kalla la-in lam yantahi lanasfaʿanbinnasiya
  16. Nasiyatin kathibatin khati-a
  17. Falyadʿu nadiyah
  18. Sanadʿu azzabaniya
  19. Kalla la tutiʿhu wasjudwaqtarib

Verse 1

Y. Emerick Read in the name of your Lord who created —
Abdel Haleem Read! In the name of your Lord who created:
Yusuf Ali Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
W. Khan Read! In the name of your Lord, who created:
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), read in the name of your Lord who created (all things).

Verse 2

Y. Emerick Created human beings from a clinging thing.
Abdel Haleem He created manfrom a clinging form.
Yusuf Ali Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
W. Khan created man from a clot [of blood].
M. Sarwar He created man from a clot of blood.

Verse 3

Y. Emerick Read, for your Lord is Most Generous.
Abdel Haleem Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One
Yusuf Ali Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-
W. Khan Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One
M. Sarwar Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One,

Verse 4

Y. Emerick He taught with the pen;
Abdel Haleem who taught by [means of] the pen,
Yusuf Ali He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-
W. Khan who taught by the pen,
M. Sarwar who, by the pen, taught the human being:

Verse 5

Y. Emerick He taught human beings what they didn’t know before.
Abdel Haleem who taught man what he did not know.
Yusuf Ali Taught man that which he knew not.
W. Khan taught man what he did not know.
M. Sarwar He taught the human being what he did not know.

Verse 6

Y. Emerick Yet, the human being is still so utterly rebellious,
Abdel Haleem But man exceeds all bounds
Yusuf Ali Day, but man doth transgress all bounds,
W. Khan Yet man behaves arrogantly,
M. Sarwar Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel

Verse 7

Y. Emerick even considering himself to be independent!
Abdel Haleem when he thinks he is self-sufficient:
Yusuf Ali In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.
W. Khan because he thinks himself self-sufficient:
M. Sarwar because he thinks that he is independent.

Verse 8

Y. Emerick Yet back to your Lord is the return.
Abdel Haleem [Prophet], all will return to your Lord.
Yusuf Ali Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).
W. Khan truly, all will return to your Lord.
M. Sarwar However, (all things) will return to your Lord.

Verse 9

Y. Emerick Have you ever seen the one who discourages
Abdel Haleem Have you seen the man who forbids
Yusuf Ali Seest thou one who forbids-
W. Khan Have you seen one who prevents
M. Sarwar Have you seen the one who prohibits

Verse 10

Y. Emerick a servant (of God) from praying?
Abdel Haleem [Our] servant to pray?
Yusuf Ali A votary when he (turns) to pray?
W. Khan a worshipper from praying?
M. Sarwar a servant of Ours from prayer?

Verse 11

Y. Emerick Do you think he’s being guided
Abdel Haleem Have you seen whether he is rightly guided,
Yusuf Ali Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-
W. Khan Do you think he is rightly guided,
M. Sarwar What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided

Verse 12

Y. Emerick or even concerned (about God),
Abdel Haleem or encourages true piety?
Yusuf Ali Or enjoins Righteousness?
W. Khan or enjoins true piety?
M. Sarwar or if he commands others to maintain piety!?

Verse 13

Y. Emerick or does he deny (the truth) and turn aside?
Abdel Haleem Have you seen whether he denies the truth and turns away from it?
Yusuf Ali Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?
W. Khan Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it?
M. Sarwar What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!?

Verse 14

Y. Emerick Doesn’t he know that God is watching him?
Abdel Haleem Does he not realize that God sees all?
Yusuf Ali Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?
W. Khan Does he not know that God observes all things?
M. Sarwar Does he not realize that God sees him?

Verse 15

Y. Emerick Let him be warned then, that unless he changes his ways, We’ll drag him down by the hair of his forehead —
Abdel Haleem No! If he does not stop, We shall drag him by his forehead––
Yusuf Ali Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,-
W. Khan Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock—
M. Sarwar Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks,

Verse 16

Y. Emerick his lying, sinful forehead!
Abdel Haleem his lying, sinful forehead.
Yusuf Ali A lying, sinful forelock!
W. Khan his lying, sinful forelock.
M. Sarwar his lying sinful forelock.

Verse 17

Y. Emerick Then let him call upon his supporters for help,
Abdel Haleem Let him summon his comrades;
Yusuf Ali Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):
W. Khan Then let him call his associates;
M. Sarwar Let him call on his associates for help

Verse 18

Y. Emerick for We too, will call — upon the forces of torment!
Abdel Haleem We shall summon the guards of Hell.
Yusuf Ali We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!
W. Khan We shall summon the guards of Hell.
M. Sarwar and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell.

Verse 19

Y. Emerick Absolutely not! Don’t let yourself get sidetracked by someone like that. Rather, bow (in adoration), and draw closer (to God).
Abdel Haleem No! Do not obey him [Prophet]: bow down in worship and draw close.
Yusuf Ali Day, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
W. Khan No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God.
M. Sarwar (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God.
